r6r, crispin, Nick, greg, mick87, - thanx for the congrats....

r6r - on the theory posse - you're right, I'll still be posting in here and I'll be archiving in the COE site. The ability to have them in an easy access site and split to enable further detailed discussion is invaluable [thanx Matt]
Nick - so do you want to complete you song, send it to me and I'll try to sort out your drums...???

So long as you use a metronome and your timing is rock solid I may be able to sort it...

greg - cheers dude... bottoms up... lol...

My fave KC album is Starless... but then KC are not my fave band in the prog world - PFM, Yes, Genesis [pre 76] and Rush are... by far...

ovation - I've read and re-read your letter.... what you say about Talking to Stone is just amazing... When I was touring / gigging etc, I'd often get folks come to me after a gig saying how much they'd enjoyed my playing and how much work I put into it... this is obviously hugely flattering and makes me feal so very proud.... The thing is, a gig is a momentary and fleeting thing... so you can leave a gig thinking you seen something awesome - if you heard a recording of it later would you still be convinced... would it shatter the memory of a perfect evening spent in the company of your heros.....

You have recordings of the demo's for my new album... those are recordings with the luxury of auto punch in/out [so I could tidy up the worts etc...

The video you have is obviously 100% live... me, an RG, a wah and a 2120... no get out of jail free cards there.. it is therefore repeatable... you can watch it over and over - worts and all..... for these reasons, I'm totally stunned that it has had such a profound effect on you... stunned, more than pleasently surprised, deeply flattered and hugely proud.. even more so than a gig....

To touch someone like that, so far away... wow...
such is the power of music...
and like I say ------

Play every note as if it is your last! ! ! ! !

Thanx bro.....

Nick - I can handle CD or mini disk... snail mail.. lol
if you are going to redo the guitars, will you do a complete but drumless backing track or will you want to build a new backing track from the drums up...?
Yoda - I'll try to get a pass.... what's the date again?

trutina - thanx and thanx..... lol

JSC - at 800 and 500 a piece - we abviously have way too much spare time... lol
Lyz - 500 dec = 111110100 bin = 1F4 hex lol....

Birthdays are better in hex 'cos I still qualify for 18-30 vacations... lol

r6r - you're right in what you say to Traum [I think]... my thoughts on constant practice are:
playing all day and doing nothing else is bad for you... it is possible to over practice... or be over comitted to practice... you end up stale as a personality... your personality is the part that really needs to come out in your playing... so you end up stale as a player... technically very good but dull none the less - this is why you need time to do other stuff..:
read fiction and factual books, go do something mentally stimulating like a museum trip, go out with the guys, be nice to your girlie and take her out on a nice date ['cos you're still in trouble for going out with the guys], travel / go sight seeing / explore places and things of great natural beauty [more fun with the guys than the girlie but sometimes the girlie is mandatory and not subject to negotiation], listen to music [where all guitars are locked in a gig back / flight case and will not be coming out to spoil the listening] - in fact - go to the music library and check out music that you would not normally buy - classical, jazz, ethnic, etc
Just generally go 'round having a great time - and set some time aside for practice / writing / playing guitar...

Horizon broadening stuff.... enjoy being alive
even if guitars are a very large part of your life - as with me - they are still only a part...

Nick - if the basic size and shape of the song remain unchanged, then this will be easier... I can build you a drum track.. pop it onto CD and stick it in the post... from there you can add the bass, guitars and keys...

mowlie - I used to play for a minimum of 2 hours per day [pretty much every day for 15 years] - I still managed to get out with the boys and get into trouble, go to gigs, study, read, shag and generally enjoy life... when I started working full time, I took an electric to work, got to work early and practiced somewhere quiet for an hour... and did the same at lunch time... when I got the Zoom 9002 PRO practice got even better... by the time I got home, I'd done two hours.... sometimes I'd practice a specific technique, sometimes messing with licks and riffs [research] and often [once I'd got the Zoom] playing along with CD's and backing tracks I'd found / made - just general freestyle... If I wanted to sight read a Bach violin suite I could do that too.... all I had to do was get out of bed an hour ealier and not go down the pub at lunch time....

Now I only practice if there is something specific I want to repair or figure out.. the rest of my time is spent writing and prepping for gigs - which is still a form of practice I guess...

r6r - I dont run around like a loony trying to get everything done... I'm pretty chilled out really.... lol...
Ovation - I guess that the emotional content has basically the same source... the sense of loss and the sense that the result cannot be changed.... how unfair it is and there's no going back... but also and most importantly how much you cared... and still care... your connection to the track is pretty clear now.. I take that as only the best kind of compliment - this is the amazing part how music can really reach out and touch... even if the writer and the listener not only never met because they live on opposite sides of the world, but even more amazingly, didn't even live in the same era [100's of years appart]..

and that's the part that always amazes me most...

r6r - that's a really nice post about Talking to Stone - and yes I couldn't agree more "some one sign me! ! !" ... lol lol

Nick - If the track you post is 'reference' only.. i.e. I use it to create the drum track but it is not used to record over the top of the drums... this will be ok... post it up and I'll start programming as soon as I've completed the solos on my track..

paulclark@rocketmail.com

Avarice - lol... someone's got to fill in for Joe... lol..

I'd be as successfull as him too if I'd sold as many cd's... lol

Ethn - there is practice and then there is practice... I know of folks that spend hour after hour practicing technique... scales, arpeggio sweeps, alternate picking, tapping... it's as if there is some kind of urgency to have the most flawless technique known to man.... hour after hour, day after day...
personally, I couldn't think of any better reason to give up guitar... doing that over and over would just suck all of the passion out of the instrument...
I play because I love playing, I practice what I need to when I need to, I spend 80% of my time with the guitar writing music, improvising and generally having a great time.. on the odd occasion I'll sight read something for fun - rarely guitar music - most often violin, church organ, cello, harpsichord etc...
it sounds to me as though you need to expand your circle of friends, open up, lighten up, get drunk a few times, go to bars and clubs... mingle with the rest of humanity... generally party on and smile a bit... you'll not meet too many girlies sitting on your own with a guitar or a ninja flick....
maybe try to be less serious and enjoy yourself more... it'll come out in your playing... widen your life experience...

I don't really know you that well so if I've gone off on the wrong tack then I appologise...

ovation - that's a nice attitude to what is a painful thing to go through..... # : )

Avarice - Clarksys ins Whites... lol - so what ever did happen to the savage... maybe spiller force fed him to the wolf before he was executed... lmao... maybe the savage was infact both the wolf and spiller... lol... no - not bright enough to pull that one off... lmao...
sad what happened to his worm though... I think there is an emotionally charged song hiding in that one... so long as addam don't get there first.. I'll not be writing that one anywhere close to a Taco Bell radar station... lmao..
and the thought of getting close to those strange smelling 14 year old girlies is quite appealing - don't you think ? ? ... lol lol lol...
my global crusade as shred tech guru is to confuse the entire worlds population of shredders... and it's working... lol lol...
dude - if I had a web site of my own that would be yet another place for me to visit... so bro, I just don't have the time.. looking at it one way: does that make me some kind of parasite.... if so - who really gives a shit... lmao.. looking at it from another way: I'm just a lazy bastard that can't be arsed to build his own site - and still don't give a shit.... lmfao....
artanis - lol lol lol...
more importantly:
E N G L A N D totally turned over Turkey 2-0 - awesome game...

RDG - checked out some of your tunes... very nice stuff... you have a very nice tight and controlled style.. great note selection too...

From the pick I take it you're a lefty... Great looking Strat too..

very cool

Nick - I've replied to your e-mail... no point in going through all the misc details in t2j as it is only really of interest to us...

I've not heard the IUMA version - I'll go there, down load it and play it whenb I'm not connected to the LAN... with any luck there will be less jitter - this prob is really introduce by this crap laptop... being logged in to the LAN makes it worse...

I'm not familiar with fruity loops... maybe just grab a sample and chop off a few beats from the end - so you loop between different points.... that's how I'd do it with make AKAI sampler or Triton...

Everything I loaded into IUMA stayed there...

# : )

quantum - that's exactly the point I'm trying to make... yes practice and practice hard... yes be very focused upon what it is you are trying to learn - a specific technique / theory / idea, but no don't make practice a chore.....

The most important thing about becoming a creative player is writing.... never stop writing songs, riffs and licks... this way you have to think for yourself, the music never gets stale and it stays stimulating...

So mix your practice sessions around between technique / theory and it's application / writing / just freestyling and having fun....

But don't do it at the expense of your social life - that's unhealthy...

Trutina - down the tubes may be a 'cleaner' version of 'down the shitter'.... lol lol - there is your tube... lmao
death cube - the look real nice.... I wonder if he builds 7's.... the BTG-1 is right up my street... I need one.. or an endoresment.. lol....

t2j CD - dipstick here tried a little too hard in the gym two days ago... my pick hand has been in a support bandage since then - if the pain is still serious by Monday I'll head off to A&E for an X-ray - my worst fear is that I may have broken / cracked a bone in my hand.. Right now though I suspect that it is just a nasty bruise deep inside.... what a total idiot... Fingers crossed - I don't think this is really serious.. I'll have to see how it goes..

ovation - 12oz curl.... lol... good if you look like 'Olivsk - ug ug' lol.. I normally barbell curl around 32 to 36kg... a concentration curl on the final set of a pyramid set would be 3 reps and 30kg in each hand... lol... but that's not what did the damage... I've started to introduce more cardio into my gym time... did bits of kata that I could remember and various combination moves in various stances... so I moved onto the bag to do some 'applied Goju Ryu'... lol.. I did surprise myself with some pretty reasonable [good power too] mowushi gerri chudan, mae gerri jodan and chudan kicks - a little more muay thai style than Okinawan though - 'cos that suites a short assed heavy geezer like me.. lol.. The Yoko gerri was ok [lacking a little height and 'snap' - but I'll work on that]. Due to all the weight training I've been doing I've now got strength in my arms, shoulders, back and chest that I've never had before - even more than when I was in my 20's.... and discovered that I've now got a killer enpi jodan [the one that swings into the cheek from the side with the elbow as opposed to the elbow coming up into the sternum] - I reckon that has serious stopping power... the uraken to the temple has big power now too.. that'll upset folks - big ones too - very fast and with more power than my hook... so we have Sensei Clarky with no guitar, the other Sensei Clarky: the crap ninja one.. lol - reliving time spent in the dojo - 18 years ago was the last time I put on a gi.... lol - he sees some of the old form coming back... but is now a fair bit bigger and stronger than he used to be... and is brutally murdering the bag - which has done nothing to offend - and then comes the big oi tsuki, gyaku tsuki, kezame tsuki combination... the bag didn't like it one bit... retaliates by almost breaking my left hand....
sittng on the floor with a cold compress trying to think of what I did wrong it dawns on me - what's missing... no bandages / strapping on my hands and wrists....
It seems as through all this new extra muscle I'm growing is forming inside my skull as well, thereby displacing brain tissue - 'cos it's not as if I've never walked into a dojo, faught in a tournament or murdered a bag before - this complete tit should know better - a whole lot better.... lol
and now it hurts - a whole lot - lol lol

I hope you enjoyed my half-assed attempts at the Jap spellings.... lmao....

Narface - what song are you refering to? # : )
r6r - yeah lol - kind of the anti Sensei... lol - my flexibility is improving because I'm working on it... my cardio side has never been great... I need to work it a little more... my strength has grow enourmously and quickly too... but that is as much a reflection of my body make up as the way I work out.
My injury was really caused by a loss of concentration resulting in poor technique....
one of those times where you throw the punch, you know it's not 100% right, but once launched it can't be stopped - and with way to much power too... it'll never have a happy ending.. lmao

narface - thanx bro.. I'm really glad you like it.... very cool..

greg - lmao - so is there any connection between being gay and laying huge cables.... I'm sure I can offer some nasty theories as to why this may be true..... lmfao...
plum - the hand is a lot better today... the bandage is off... it just aches a little... and I played last night too.. good enough to add another 45 seconds of lead guitar.. the pain is not in the wrist action when picking or holding a pick, but if I try to make a tight fist or grip something heavy.. When I play guitar, dispite what it looks like, I actually have quite a gentle technique....

I hope your ear is ok....

maybe this cd is jinxed... lol lol lol

opcs - when I record I never use an amp any more... my Digitech 2120 has several amp simulators as does my Zoom 9002 PRO [which all my IUMA tracks were recorded with]... sounds fine..
death cube - he wouldn't give me a quote because I was not interested in buying within 30 days.... no prob... I'll talk to him when I'm ready
ovation - snapping a makiwara - that's insane.... I haven't used those for a long time... I recall that the technique has to be spot on or you'll really hurt yourself....
mokuso is something I've always done after training not matter idf it was in the dojo or in the weight room... I love the fealing when slowing down the heart, and breathing.. that inner peace - like floating.. especially after a real hard workout.. it causes a few odd looks from some folks in the gym but I don't care... it's the one habit I've never lost... I do it sometimes after gigs and seriously exciting shredding sessions - just to calm down and drain away the adrenalin...
the wire on the bridge is an earth wire... take it off and the guitar can get noisy....

r6r - normally I'm pretty carefull with my hands - as you can imagine - I guess every now and again I remind myself how stupid I am... I've been working out regularly for around 6 months now, and in the gym since early Jan.. in the 1st 4 months I lost something like 30 to 35 lbs.. in the last two months I've gained around 10 to 15 lbs... it's working pretty good... I'm growing some places, trimming and toning others. so far all is going to plan and this act of stupidity is my first injury.... next time on the bag I'll get a few crepes and strap up nice and tight.... because I obviously need revenge... lol

Nick - if there is any consolation - my track was originally going to be 'a quicky'.. a nice little shred... something exciting but pretty small, fun and nothing too serious... and it has turned out so differently... it would not be out of place on my new CD... every day I work on it it gets more exciting, more passionate.. it is unfolding beautifully.. I'm really very pleased with it.. quietly proud of it too... dispite my hand, I actually played pretty solidly.. you can't hear the injury, there was no lack of accuarcy, pace or expression... I just had to take little rests between takes...

If this goes to plan, some of you guys are going to like this one...

jsc1 - I busted my hand on the bag... it's healing nicely.. i'll be back in the gym today - just a light session until my hand is 100%...

I can still play though... it's made no difference to my playing at all... it just aches a little when I play...

r6r - nice comparison with Ozzy... lol... makes me feal so proud... lmfao... I woundn't mind his money... the rest of his life he can keep..... lol lol
Ovation - this track will be ready for ttj - last night I completed the solos..the busted hand is busted in a way that hurts if I use a tight grip and feals reasonably ok [just a little ache and some tightness - which I can deal with] if I shred... all 9 mins worth..... all I have to do is a little tidying up in the backing track, mix and master...
trutina - mail me the address where I should send the CD... it'll be in the post within 10 days - 'cos I got to read the Yamaha manual about how to set up scenes and master.....

The track sounds pretty nice.... I'm quite pleased with it... especially given that I've been learning the AW16G along the way... it's been fun...

ovation - my t2j track is called: Our Blood On Their Hands
It depicts life as a civilian in a war zone. The fear and anticipation knowing that you are about to be attacked... Then the attack itself.. chaos, destruction... The final part depicts frantically digging through the rubble for family and friends...

I did look at the l/h 555... It's basically an RG470 with a monkey grip and pretty inlays.... and double the price....
so the RG470 was the one me......

Ovation - the bag and I reached an understanding this morning... I did the right thing... bandaged the wrists and hands... the bag now respects me deeply - it is blind, has no teeth and has been taken to hospital by helicopter suffering with severe contusions all over, head-butt damage and bite marks to the face....

In the words of Julius Cesar Smith - a notorious geezer I know from Millwall football ground:

"I came, I saw, I knocked the shit out of everyone"

Artanis - I used to be a big American football fan... I used to catch a game on tv from time to time and really enjoy it... I find myself working in Dallas a few times a year and one time, a few friends and I went to see the Cowboys play the Bengals... I've never been so bored in my life... there was a timeout when the game was 14 seconds old.. all the stopping, breaks and over the tanoy "could you please focus your attention on stand number 23 for Big Al's Sport Store in Plano Parkway...."
I was a fan... never again...
the thing with footie [soccer], ozzie rules and rugby is that they are free flowing games... which is why they are exciting to watch... I like footie [soccer] but I'm not an avid fan... especially the European Championships - that's where you'll see it at it's best - for sheer quality of play, it's better than the world cup..
