Ok, it's been a while sine I last posted here!! Wow...Over a year, I think. I'm happy to report that I'm going to see Joe, Steve and Robert Fripp here in Glasgow in almost 2 months' time - funnily enough, on exactly the same day as I saw Joe on his Crystal Planet tour, four years ago. Excellent!! I'm having trouble...I've been working on "If I Could Fly" from the new record, and I just can't figure out the key!! Ok, so it's D major for the first half, but the second half, I just can't...It looks like D mixolydian, but the root is A - and it sure doesn't sound minor, even though it's a C natural in there, not C sharp. Anyone?! And Matt, it's been too long - drop me a line, because I don't know your AIM or MSN name any more! Take care, folks. And, Joe - congrats on the new CD - different, but not - and excellent as always.

Ah, I got the chords at last - got the ones at the start straight away...It was the change to D major that threw me - he just puts in some C naturals occasionally, even though the chords are A and G. But, it's all cool now! I can't see to find QUITE the right voicing of G, though - anyone got a suggestion? Probably alternate tuning, actually, but still. I'm talking about like the last 4 minutes of "If I Could Fly", in case anyone's wondering! So that's me got the whole thing down except the legato sections which I haven't started to work on yet! Nice one. :o) Nitsua, I think the backing chords you said are just SLIGHTLY off, but you were helping me, so thank you! Far as I can tell, they are Gmaj7, A, B...But I guess unless Joe tells us otherwise, this won't be settled. LOL I don't mean to start anything - just offering my opinion!
Delfino, just be careful with your muting of empty strings...There are a lot of 6ths in there which skip a string. It's actually not as hard to play as it looks - but take Nitsua's advice, and start off slow. If you have the TAB, it'll make it a lot easier! Good luck with it.
Does anyone know how to sharpen knife edges on a Lo-TRSII trem, by any chance? I don't want to spend a fortune to take it to the shop for what is probably 30 minutes' work if I can do it myself! Any advice would be fantastic. Catch you all later!

Hey again guys! I finally figured out what I believe to be the voicing for the Gmaj7 chord in "If I Could Fly"...Try this one on for size - it's pretty cool at the least. From the 6th to first string, it goes x 5 5 0 3 2. That gives you no 3rd, I know, but still!
Hey, Nitsua, you'll be glad to know that the record for spiders is something like 12 inches...That species is South American, and averages about 11 inches leg span, so it'll give you a run for your money. LOL
Guys, I don't know if Joe's ever talked about this before, so if he has, I'd appreciate it if someone would pass on what he said to me, but Joe - how do you match your accompaniment to your solo? Usually when I do it, it's luck that I catch the backing rhythm/chords change, but do you have like a lead-in signal, or anything like that? I know that you plan very few solos, so if you could answer that for us, it would be great! I can't wait until June 23rd...I'll see you and Steve and Robert - at least this time, Steve won't get hit in the head by Yngwie's guitar, right?!
Thank you for the welcome back, Ovation. :o)

When Kirk Hammett brought Joe a chord progression, Joe would tell him which scales he could use over it to sound good, for a specific effect - evidently, Kirk ignored Joe's advice, and opted for the scales Joe did NOT list!! Hammett is a decent enough guitarist; unfortunately, he's just in the wrong key most of the time. LOL
I was in a hosted chat with Joe one time, and he said that maybe, when he's recorded all he would like to have done, that he'd seriously consider opening a school - how awesome would that be?! GIT will go bankrupt if the choice is between that and Joe Satriani's classes!

Sammy Andrews - F#m7add11 is a nice one...Try this, 6th string to 1st - 2 4 2 4 0 0....Play the 2nd fret with a half bar with your 1st finger, or use your thumb wrapped round the neck! So the notes are F# C# E B B E; or you can try this one to include the minor 3rd: 2 4 2 2 0 0, which makes the notes F# C# E A B E...I think I prefer the second one, but either works! Whenever you're making up a chord, think of the notes you really need - which ones you can miss out, and just fine the fingering which is most comfortable for you. For the 2nd chord's fingering, try a barre on the bottom three strings with the 1st finger, then hit the 3rd string with your 2nd finger, using your 4th finger for the C# on the 5th string. Good luck!

Museman, the reason that The Extremist and Friends on the LISF DVD are in regular tuning (ok, Friends is in Drop D) is probably for convenience...Tuning stability really goes out the window when you have to drop the whole guitar down a step, and then that 6th string down another whole tone. Also, since The Extremist was in E minor, the same as Big Bad Moon, Joe could use the same harmonica, as opposed to having to switch them during the set.

Brother Al, just a minor niggle - for that perfect cadence in the key of C major you mentioned, you don't modulate to the key of G...A perfect cadence is V I - meaning you play the V chord, the G major, then finish on a C major - the tonic chord...You don't change key during it. Modulation, though, you're right - it's changing keys, like switching between C major and C minor in the course of a song. Sorry, but it just kinda struck a dischord if you'll pardon the pun!

AriaMac, you're right about the perfect cadences (watch your notation, though - sometimes V can mean major, and v can mean minor...Depends who you're talking to, but I know you didn't mean it like that), and the plagal - I think imperfect is VI-I, isn't it? And interrupted is ending on the VI? I might be a little mixed up - I don't really study cadences much, but perfect and plagal I definitely remember.
Anyone who's wanting to try to link guitar and theory together, check out my website - it'll hopefully help you some! It's not finished yet, but there's a fair bit on there.
