trutina - great post man!

i haven't been on here for a while due to my internet breaking and runnign out of money (i'm on 1p a minute atm). I just bought tickets for the Bournemouth gig, should be awesome! i'm in row C which should be pretty good, i'm just hoping 37 is *reasonably* central.

i'm highly doubting a dvd of this european tour, having had two vai outings lately and a dvd of the last tour... but I know a lot of people would buy it. This lineup is so intruiging- I can't wait to see what Fripp is like outside of King Crimson. But I imagine with these seating venues, and so much more subdued a third guitarist than any previous ones- i'm guessing it's all oging to take on a different feel from the vids/dvds i've seen.

Anyway, how much does the steve vai band rock on the g3 dvd? i'm the hell outta here is better than anything on the astoria dvd... even though the vai one is amazing.

delfino - what number is your ticket? if you are in the corner that sucks! but hopfully there won't be too much equipment in the way of view...

mick87 - no, i wasn't at that show- neil morgan was, that's all i know. there are some amazing bits on it (trade off during jiboom is one of my favourite bits, but the g3 one is so focused and great. although i haven't seen a performance by vai as good as one my friend has- him playing tender surrender a while back- i don't know if anyone else knows what i'm talking about- he does some pretty fast legato whilst brushing his hair back with his right hand at one point- but every note on that recording is spot on. I'm ramblign and i know it.

about jimi's death- when satch is soloing on little wing on the new dvd- he seems so intensely into the music it's amazing... it's one of the few bits of satch's playing that i've seen where he really steps out of his own personality a bit... i don't know if anyone else sees that too?

weonlywonfiveone- make sure you're as prepared as you can be, musically speaking. if you make mistakes, forget about them, dwelling on them won't make them go away. relaxed concentration is the best state to be in.

the only other thing i can really say is thatwhen you're up there, you'll probably feel really reserved- not want to run around much, or groove or do anything like that- if you can break your fear of that, and move around a bit, maybe do something show-offy at some point, it'll actually enable you to relax way more.

962 - how about Spongebob Squarepants for next G3! (on your banner :)

delfino - you sure about that? on the ticketline website it seems to indicate that the whole of the front area is in rows A-X...

olly1uk - i think clarky and neil morgan are bournemouthing... i may be wrong though. would be cool to meet up.

i love the inclusion of the tambourine player on the album credits :) Shame to not see Jordan Rudess contributing on a song or two though...

delfino - sorry, my wires were a bit crossed there... thought you were talking bout bornemouth seating...

962 - you wouldn't believe this but i just got back from playing a composition of mine, which is a serialist recomposition of in the hall, and the inspector gadget theme tune... it's called "the irrational king inspector" - it's based on root 2 and pi as well, you see.

master yoda - nice little piece that. I can occasionally be found playing it on piano.

tjplaw - sure it's the Lord's House (i'm a Christian too), but that doesn't mean you can't crank it! But then you're there to make a worshipful noise, which might not require that.

962- too true about in the hall and inspector. the idea came from extended jams me and various musicians have had on the theme - credit to neil morgan here, cause he played it a bit when we jammed.

how pi and root 2 got in there- i wrote 5 variations on each theme and labelled them 0 - 9. Then, the guitar had the variations ordered according to the digits of pi, ie. 31415, and the piano got them ordered by root 2 - 1.41 etc.

neil - yup - great piece.

962 - original maybe, i might get marks for that, and/or the title, but it is my most hated composition to date. I really hate not having the control about how things turn out. it's fine when you're collaborating, cause you can say if there's something you really think would work better a different way. But when it's all your material that has been mathematically screwed up- it is more than a touch frustrating for me.

zenfish - i would *always* tell people to get "in the court..." first... i think it's thoroughly accessible to most backgrounds, and from there you can get onto other ones, like red. when i play people eyes wide open, they just get scared...

clarky - who could forget aug. and neapoliton 6ths? they rock hard...

I - bVI (fr 6) - bII (first inversion) - V

nice little progression i wrote a while ago.

master yoda - you'd lose a lot of marks in certain classical areas - look at John Cage's A Room though- just the notes, nothing else. Dynamic markings are futile in my opinion for electronic guitars in most cases. Level is set by the equipment, and if you're using serious gain, then volume hardly changes anyway- same with compression in a mix. Of vital importance though, is articulation.

T2J Song Contest - The upsets:

I looked at which songs were in the anthology and which weren't, and by that measure, the upsets were:

big bad moon lost to bells of lal the crush of love lost to up in the sky

two songs were pitted against other anthology songs, summer song lost to MPHGT- which was a close and epic battle, and slick lost out to an anthology song; this isn't really an upset though since it wasn't on there because of quality but because we demanded it.

personal upsets: slidey ones tended to lose- champagne? should have got through purely on the basis of the solo, nor sittin' round would have been nice to see too. summer song should have got through - I know we've all heard it so many times, but it's such a good piece in so many ways- it just suffers from a less exciting title, and not as much craziness.

do the stu: i lost my engines of creation cd (it got thrown away in an old cd player)- so i burnt from my mp3 copy... is that legal?

clarky - i've only used aug 6ths to modulate to bII. In the example i posted last time, I was basically using a french 6th as a dominant chord to the neapolitan 6th chord, which resolves to the dominant, and then to major tonic... any other cool relationships? i like using whole tone type chords as dominants...

Clarky - OK... here goes. Say we're in C major... we have a C chord, then we go down to an Augmented 6th chord (Ab C D/Eb F#). normally that'd go to G, chord V (maybe with a 64 = 53). That could resolve back to C. So you might do that a few times to set a pattern within C.

Then you use the German 6th chord but spell it as a dominant 7th. Which would be dominant to Db, so you can go to a Db chord and call that the new tonic. Or if you want to stay within that key, you could put it in first inversion and call it a neapolitan 6th (bass note F), which then resolves to the dominant. Do you get what I mean?

clarky - it's too late right now to read that all and for it to make sense but i'll have a look in the morning :)

zenfish - i'm a bit lost on what you were saying about backgrounds - you might have meant someone else...

i can't seem to get the new album clips to work....

edit: cancel that order - new album sounds stellar! i'm really excited now! bamboo is cooool. I like the rain sounds like a good vocal track. joe's not afraid to use effects on this album...

mr nick - yeah, haven't seen you apart from that one time...

neil - well i'm around til friday, then off for 4 weeks... if you want to meet up before then, that's cool... wednesday is good for me... otherwise, i have 5 weeks after easter - the last three of which have no exams, coursework, or lectures :)

neil - no problem, i've not got much time myself...

jsjs - pagan- well, it's normally reserved for people who worship spirits, do magic, that kinda thing. withces, witchcraft, that kinda thing. but it can also refer to anything non-christian... which i think is more what vai was getting at... that was back in '92 though (correct me if i'm wrong).

thebob - i don't think time machine counts as a studio album, that's why - even the studio disc is just a compilation of stuff that didn't get onto other albums- not all recorded in one session, unlike the other albums.

guys - check out my soundclick - it's only got two pieces on there, one of which is from my iuma site. But the other one is a brand newly recorded, if short piece for solo bass guitar. Check it out at Jellyman's New Soundclick Site. The piece is called Someone is Eating Me...

neil - your version of always - just a touch too loose on the rhythm of the slower bits for my liking, nice little changes to the melody here and there (eg. just before tapping). Well executed all in all though :) . You come across as a much better guitarist in a one-on-one situation than on the recordings though. cool "terror death lick"...

check out my soundclick, someone is eating me (and icelandic sheep, if you haven't heard it)

mikey vai - thanks! i was basically seeing what kinda things i could do with a two handed approach, then screwing around with odd sounds in the middle... i wasn't particularly thinking of stu, (more of a chapman stick) but i guess stu's half way between the instruments...

stu clone - Here you go = - Someone is eating me is the track

mick87 - i've never touched one, so I couldn't really tell you, but from what others write, it's the feel that you have to try and get used to- it's a lot softer a touch than tapping on a bass/electric. once you're used to that and using right hand for chords/melody, the tuning's pretty locked into your brain...

artanis I - no, i haven't seen finding nemo! maybe that's why it's hard to get the name jellyman when signing up for stuff... very disgruntling... jellyman was my name in one form for about 2 years now... just trying to remember my older ones... i was "a local person" for a while... something before that too...

it was me who mentioned Jason Martin... probably not the guy next door to you, but still, might as well say - short hair, well built, plays drums well, likes prog rock and portnoy?
