hey everybody I'm back- I couldnt read all 1320 or so new posts so i skipped.. I see there's some stuff about the enigmaitc scale- do you know where it comes from?

If not- a music journal in the 1800s sometime posted a scale they invented and challenged composers to include it in a piece. And Verdi did, with the choir singing up and down the scale and inventive and fdifferent harmonies from the accompanying instruments each time- or something to that effect.

I hope all the other guys and girls who took A levels/ AS exams this year did well. I got A for Music and Maths, with D for Physics. On the three Physics papers I got A, A and unclassified.... stupid coursework. Neil Morgan?

QT6 requires the download of an an installer, and then the installer will download about 20-30 minutes worth of 56k bandwidth, so it'll take 40 minutes or so in all.

Has there been discussion about Joe saying about a classical side project? sounds exciting. Fits in with the Rock/something different alternation Joe does (out there NOTE, mainstreamish SWTA, FIABD vocals, Extremist rock, time machine 1 /red album something a bit different, CP rock, EOC electronica, SBM rock)

Has anyoen seen Austin Powers 3- you know the bit where Frau Farbissina comes to visit Dr Evil in prison? the music at that point sounds so much like sittin' round off Joe Satriani. ANyone else notice that?

ok, webcast really jittery... yeah, that's with me on 56k modem and eith 28.8/36.6k option on quicktime 6. Oh, and nothing else using my internet connection. Oh dear. Can anyone streambox it or anything? I happily wait 24 hours or so to download huge files onto the computer. as long as they're satriani webcasts that is.

I'll try again soon, but maybe it would be possible to release it in the future as a downloadable file? I dunno.

JSC1 -RSI is killer, I know three people who've had it and still have it. A drummer, my girlfriend (piano, flute) and a singer.

You have to be very disciplined. It's better to play guitar a little bit with RSI than to leave it for ages and then release it all with a massive lot of guitar playing. If you think you might fall for that one, make sure you play a little bit every now and then.

When playing the guitar, check your posture. Most forms of RSI originate in the back. Check your posture at the computer, bad wrist positions can do a lot of damage. Other than that, good luck.

Everyone talking about the amount of soul in performacne is right but it doesnt help me. I'm fine with the theory and soul, I just can't play the damn thing!

Remember everyone that there are over 20 different types of RSI so what can be helpful for one person could wreck another person's wrists. JSC1 - most important thing is to do what your physio says. Acupuncture helped my girlfriend a fair bit but it was mainly down to stress that she got it.

hehe it's funny someone mentioning stu beef, since beefstu is my nickname on guitar.com - partially a pun on stu hamm, but also since i was made to ask the headman of a band i'm into whether he preferred roast chicken of beef stew. (he answered roast chicken).

Joe- sad to hear about the guitar, what you gonna do with you bluesy toons now? I suppose you can't bring out a strat of yours due to contracts and stuff (though you can in a studio). Hmm. Good luck with finding the person responsible. And with the two other guitars which as far as i know arte still not found.

Long live the chrome boy!

a tool is an extension of one's body by, well definition.

Austin- I read that too, but I'm pretty sure that was referring to on record, but not on stage, but I could well have read it wrongly. Then again, these are special circumstances, and if that os the case., Ibanez might let him play a strat or something else. I dunno.

kyle, megaboyd, RIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was thinking the exact same thing when he played the intro to EOC. By the time I had told my mate Jason this was one of my faves and i had no idea he was playing it, he had gone onto the next bit of the intro.

Joe - it would be sooo amazing to see Engines Of Creation live. But I guess it would be pretty repetitive for the rest of the band to play.

aldous huxley- how could i not read his most famous book when i share his surname ;) I'm not related to him (as far as we know) though I am related fairly distantly to Charles Dickens. The book brave new world is pretty cool imho. Try reading "the doors of perception" though. i did. It's a bit interesting....

Django Reinhardt - when he was 18 he accidentally started a fire in his caravan. After two months of treatment, the 3rd AND 4th finger of his left hand were left permanently deformed and paralyzed. He played with only TWO fingers. Truly amazing.

phatman-hehe, i'm not actually since i have them all on video- i might tune into one or two, certainly when the new series comes out.

js clone 2 - I've learnt most of summer song, I just find Satch a real bugger to learn, cause of those , well, free solos. The notes are a lot less predictable, as are the rhythms as opposed to similar guitarists. I find it impossible to sit down and build up the speed with the metronome.

"You're All individuals!"

"YES WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUALS!"

"err I'm not!"

Does anyone have a tab for the solos of Steve Vai's "The Crying Machine"? I don't mean just the beginning bits, I play them by ear, I just give up and make random stuff up poorly when it comes to the trade off solos, so i want to learn them... anyone have them transcribed? Let me know if so

austin- d'addario's, 9-42s indeed. i use them myself. I'm pretty glad I checked them out cause otherwise I'd be stuck with EB Hybrid Slinky's. I really like the D'addario's cause they're bright, stay bright for a while and sliding on them feels fairly... right. fender and EB seem weird to me... I dunno.

I think all of Joe's guitars should be fitted with rape alarms as standard, just with the other controls and if anyone touches it who's not supposed to, chromeboy could pull his tremolo arm round and down to press the button. Oh wait a minute, what's that you say? Guitars can't do that? What do you mean? Oh, they don't actually have brains or muslces of their own... OK. Forget that.

the mighty turtlehead would be great to play live. just cause of the title ;)

I was thinking related to the comment about having a guitar tutorial section of some kind on this site. I think that's actually a fairly silly. I'm well up for tutorials but why on this site? I mean we all want Satch to do well with his new album and future ones, so if he's going to do that kinda thing, doing it at something like guitar.com where he can get a lot more exposure, or on a magazine site is a far more sensible idea. Although I'm well up for any tips, they would be more effective elsewhere.

And that got me thinkging. A band i'm into (Ooberman) have a bunch of fans who have a long time set up "ooberarmy" which has the job of basically getting it as much publicity as they can get, since the music is great, but their indepoendent and need exposure. So they have a large tips site of how to be effective (radio stations to phone up, appropriate numbers, tips for getting the requests accepted, tips about how to buy (eg. going in and asking if they have any of a new single in, even if you've already got it, in order to get the m to order more, and similar things).

It wouldn't I don't think work with Satch's music cause it's a genre that either you'll be interested and then fascinated in or you'll just have nothing to do with it- less accessible than pop/rock format of quality music (eg. meaningful words, cool recording techniques, classical to 20th century influences eg. Stravinsky)

Man, that shrove time fair piece from Petrushka really does get in my head (daaaa de da da da da daaaaaaaa, da da da da da da da, daaa de da da da da daaaaaa, da da da da da daa) You know the one.

Austin - street teams eh? you learn something new every day - I agree, i mean Satriani is a pretty major artist- he's just limited to people who can dig instrumental music which some people can't. Maybe in about ten years or so he'll invite lots of songwriting stars for an album and do a Santana eh?

i think the limit of what we can do with Sony doing the job and getting enough records into shops and all that, is to mention Satriani as a great guitarists to beginners and lend them an album or two of suitable nature (ones closer to music they like) That way they'll almost certainly be more proficient guitarists, nicer people than if you mentioned Yngwie, and hopefully buy some albums themselves (like my girlfriend's brother who I did the above to)

I really do talk about nothing. Oh well, 94. It'd have been about 130 if I hadn't gone on a 3 week holiday.

mr nick - I live in the UK, have a 56bps modem and downloaded it in 20 minutes. That's with a 45bps connection from NTL. Make sure you're trying to download the right thing- you should have filled in a little form on the quicktime site, and then downloaded a small file for installation purposes. Choose the SMALLEST version- that's all you need, and it'll be a lot quicker. So make certain you're downloading the correct file.

On my connection (45k) i can download just in excess of 25Mb in two hours. So there shouldn't be any trouble for you downloading a 9Mb or so file in two hours unless you have a connection speed of about 14k. Right now, look at your connection speed by double clicking the two little computers at the bottom right bit of your screen- it should say "conneced at 46667bps"

Or a different number- tell us if that number is a lot smaller, eg. 14400 in which case the only way might be to get it on a cd, or get a new internet service provider.

I hope that has helped you- and next week on "talk to joe" we're featuring a glance at how the webcast is goign for the slow modemers- thanks a lot jon for all the work you've put into the site and various webcasts as of late.

sharon - I can I can't!!!!! that's one of the funniest bits in my opinion.

non-smoker - well i couldn't get it workign before on 45600 but i could get the download of QT6 working, at least, then he's got a chance.. but yeah if he does have a poor connection, it's gonna be even harder to get the webcast going

j3dimaster - Al though I agree, Getright is great, dead simple but works without making stupid gorilla noises, unless you download from a mirror, QT6 is downloaded with by it's own installation program

wdkeck - Steve Vai was taught by Joe when young, as Austin so aptly pointed out. They still seem to be good friends and do the G3 thing.

the_crippler - I think the word is.... no- you seen him in Goldmember ;)

Webmaster extrodinaire, jon luini part 3 works better than the other bits have, I assume with the re-encoding- everyone else, check out how the 3rd part of the webcast works for you, cause it's much better for me (though still unwatchable really)

dizzy- some people love the tone of a single coil pickup, that's why they're on a strat. As great as coil tappign is on humbuckers, since the individual coils are meant to work together, they don't sound quite the same as a proper single coil pickup- nowadays some fender guitars have special noiseless pickups to buck the hum in a different way.
