Im gonna let this battle go till the day after xmas. Its looking good so far.
DCK-I know Erotomania well.Killer tune.In this one,its more of a problem with 1 note per string, but I know JP well enough to know he is not economy picking. Its one note per string, and its fast. But its not sweeping,or economy picking.
Ovation I think JP smokes Gilbert as far as lt picking goes.im not really talking about speed, more about complexity and variety of licks.I know both of their styles pretty well,Id like to think.Love them both, but I think JP is only outdone by a cat like Morse or Mclaughlin
If youse guys want a PowerTab of Gilbert vs. Petrucci examples,or maybe just what I have from Liquid Tension or DT(I don't have much DT,as I buy all the books) lemme know.

Hey Jsc1-Steve Morse Always Alt picks everything, even stuff that people mistake for sweeps, like "Tumeni Notes".The sound is much more defined. He said the difference between alt picking an arpeggio, and sweeping it,is like the difference between fingering a complex arpeggio on piano, and just running a finger down the keyboard.

I don't like Economy picking personally. It lacks definition,to my ears. Most people say they want it to sound smooth, like a horn player.Well, just use hammer ons and pull offs then, right?

And I have heard from an insane player named Jon Bjork(SP?) at the petrucci board that Most people dont know that YJM actually DOES economy pick certain runs(I think ascending runs),but it's not planned,or intentional(being that Yjm is an ignorant doofus, but I digress). He said he would bet that YJM isnt really aware of it himself,as YJM never plays a lick the same way twice.

Having said all that, remember,I detest malmsteen :D

As for Jon's credibility, you can find one of his columns in guitar technique magazine(I think it's an english mag). Its actually a column ON Yngwie's Harmonic Minor style,I believe.

Ovation, that was me saying that,my cousin was just saying thanks for saying hi,lol.

Phrygian dom-Economy picking isn't exactly sweeping, they are NOT the same thing.Sweeping is referring to using the same direction of attack for every note.(Like a sweep arpeggio)

Economy is about the odd-even rule.odd number of notes per string until you want to change direction, then it has to be even number.I.e- E 8 10 12 / A 8 10 12 then to change direction D 8 10 and then back to odd.

The economy is in reference to the number of pick strokes you save on the same licks you can alternate pick.

In all actuality, economy picking is a combination of Sweeping and Alternate picking.

I know you know the difference between the two, phrygdom,I just think the unitiated will be confused.

But they are not technically called the same thing(at least not by any exponents of the Technique that I can think of,Gambale for instance.)

PhrygDom-Sorry dude,I didn't mean to come off as condescending.I don't need to look it up though,I have several videos on the technique. But,I will say that Sweeping and Economy picking are related. But,economy and alternate picking are related too,as when you economy pick, half of the notes are still alternate picking.

I know you understand, but I think the way you explained it in your previous post may have been missintrepreted by people unfamiliar with the technique.

The only person I have heard call Economy picking sweep picking is JPetrucci(Not from his mouth, its in the rock discipline book)and he never even uses true economy picking,so I don't consider him an authority on it.

As far as the modern guitar world goes,Gambale is the big pioneer of economy picking. And that's what he calls it(He used to call it speed picking, and I have heard Shawn Lane call it that...Kinda a dumb name, dont ya think, lol).

Whereas sweeping has been around for many decades.

Personally,I think sweeping is not that advanced of a technique.Neither is string skipping. There is a lot of mystery surrounding those two words, and it's just a misunderstanding.

At any rate,I meant no offense Phryg. :D
JSC1-Oh,I agree totally.Same 5-6 licks.I was referring to his(Lame) video, where he plays a fast lick, and then can't play it the same way slow.
DCK-I actually have heard a lot of that kind of criticism heaped at Steve Morse. BUT,I have damn near every single song he has ever recorded(Well, pretty much),and all 3 of his videos. The guy always has something you haven't seen, his bag is unlimited.

Just ask Vinnie Moore. He and Steve were jamming on Freeway Jam,live.Vinnie thought a little playfull duel mid song would be cool.Vinnie would play a lick, and Steve would copy it exact, right back at him.So Vinnie thought he could throw a wrench in Morse's engine by sweeping(Since everyone knows Morse doesn't sweep)WRONG! Morse threw the lick right back at him.Vinnie was stunned, lol.

BUT,I will concede,Steve does have tendency to use similar licks a lot of the time.

But he and YJM arent even in the same sport, imo.

YJM is writing the same songs, over and over, using the same licks.Morse has a vast stylistic repertoire, and is constantly evolving song wise.Leads wise, yeah,he does tend to Palm mute fast runs, and do long bends, and use a lot of chromatics, and some of the same string skipping Ideas. But,he does surprise a lot more often than YJM.

Phrygian dom-Right on man.I agree about Gambale.A total snob about the technique.I really don't like his playing much, lol.

Reminds me of Dimeola,He believes if you dont alt pick every note, then you aren't really playing the notes.Whatever,lol.

I think I am going to name my techniques "Bubbles",in honor of you phryg.May I call you "The Phryg"? :D
DCK-I got a blanket, chocolate(Which is funny, cuz I hate candy),cologne, and 2 shirts. My 8 year old cousin gave me what can only be described as a makeup/crayon carrier shaped like a dog.Inside it had a note-"to crystel".I asked my aunt if it was really for me,she said "she gives that to everyone",lol.

I don't mind not getting anything really cool,I wasn't expecting anything, and I was happy to be with my favorite aunt.

Oh,one of my buddy's mailed me "Metroid II" for the gameboy, that was cool.

I would have liked some money, lol. But it's cool.

sorry guys,I'm ok,just had to go to California for my grandfathers funeral.Well,I didn't actually go to it,but I had to go to California because my uncle went...It's complicated, lol.
Phryg- I LOVE the Zappa disc, but then again,Im a zappa freak, lol.I think it's cool, since people are probably always asking him which Zappa songs is he on.
The Amazing thing About Jason Becker is that even though he has ALS,he is still keeping a positive frame of mind.I heard he actually GAINED 30 lbs.He said he has no doubts that he will some day play guitar again.Let's hope!

I got a new phone yesterday,so Ill call ya later on

I want petrucci back for G3,if Morse is still unavailable.
Btw,to whomever mentioned it: Satch's original idea was to do a festival type thing, like lollapalooza(Shredapalooza?lol)

I'd love to see it,but I kinda like the smaller venues better than the big outdoor arenas.Better sound,I think.(I might be wrong,I havent been to that many big shows, but the sound was always terrible)

I think it may be Swing, but I swear there was some phrase commonly used for what Im thinking of.I already did a search online for about a half hour,so Ive just given up.

Joe,would you ever be into a project like Liquid Tension Experiment?

It was a great couple of CDs featuring Tony Levin,Jordan Rudess, and JPetrucci and MPortnoy, just in case you hadn't heard of it.

I for one would love to hear you do something like this. Both albums were done in amazingly short periods of time, and were heavily Jam/Improv based.

Being that you are one of my favorite improvisers,I think a project like this, with you in it would be earth shattering.

Something like- Satriani on guitar, banjo, harmonica Victor Wooten on Bass Carter Beauford(Dave Mathews band) on Drums maybe a Piano player. Produced by Eric Caudieux

would be amazing,I think.

Hey Megaboyd Sorry I didn't call,I fell asleep!Just woke up,lol.

Ovation,I have been meaning to check out Stern. One of these days.Petrucci speaks very high of him.

I am not into jazz, except for 2 guys-Metheny and Scofield.I LOVE Pat,and Im getting more and more into Sco.

I like Dimeola a little,but I don't consider him Jazz.
