John Mayer is ridiculously talented as a song writer and performer, dont take "Your body is a wonderland" as the peak of his ability....check out a song called "Neon" the singing and guitaring are both hard by themselves, but he actually does both at the same time!!
in this age of 5th chords its great to see someone who is making jazz composition available in the popular music market, i am anxiously awaiting his next release, i have his first two!

ethn > if the piece is in B minor/D major and they have whacked an F#7 in there, i would play B harmonic minor....to emphasise the maj3rd of the F#7 as the B harmonic minor scale has the raised 7....

there are touches of harmonic minor in the solo section of /\/\ind Stor/\/\....the Raised 7th is used in rhythm riffing, where joe uses the sweep arps....its just dying for some Diminished Arpeggios ala Malmsteen!
Try this kids!
e-------------5-8-5---------------------8-11-8-----------------
b----------7---------7--------------10-----------10-------------
g--5--8----------------8-5--8-11--------------------11-8-etc-
move it up every four frets to repeat the diminished cycle! finish on a C#!

matt - i would assume joe uses the 5150s lead channel, IMO it would be a waste to use a pedal in front of one of the most gain heavy amplifiers around... (well at least before Diezel was around) ... i also think i remember joe saying he plugged directly into the 5150 after the Fulltone Octave for the solo in Crystal Planet....
i am actually seriously thinking of getting a 5150...it has a really sweet lead tone, however its not the most versatile amp... hmmmm

Death Cube... i highly doubt the soldano has more oomph than a Diezel, it handles smooth Brett Garsed lead as well as the raw in your face distortion that Adam Jones from Tool gets, which i absolutely love... Soldanos kick ass yes, but arent as versatile IMO
Matt: XXX is cool, i havent tried the combo version though... i played the XXL which was a waste of time, but hey its solid state! I checked out the video as well, a little rushed for my liking, but nice playing nonetheless...
Mike: Yep, its true i am a laney man as well! I would love to get a VH100R just for its great versatility...
