js clone1... the REAL solo will be more melodic, i was just having a blow while warming up before giving a lesson...and i was also testing out tones to use for rhythm, i want a nice 7 string chunk! thanks for checking it out...

js clone/rich ... you hit the nail on the head, i like the feel of the rhythm, its actually all i have written this far ... rhythmically i think this is the most interesting song i have written, i just need to write a melody and solos to compliment... i also wrote it with my drummer in mind, so there are a few ideas utilising similar themes but with different signatures/metres...

chris ... the song isnt completed! i sent a section to rich as i always do, and as he does for me... i will post this one on completion :)

matt... i dont know what to say, i really cant see why you 'wrote' a song with exactly the same progression from a joe tune...compositionally you are better than that...if you are attatched to that melody, i guess my only suggestion is to ditch the rhythm, and re work the chords, but then again i am not too partial to the melody either.... and another point of criticism is that i think you overuse lydian, yeh its a really nice mode, but IMHO it appears way too often in your tunes... my basic message is i think you cant keep writing songs that have too many consistencies... go buy the audioslave CD and write some riff based music! ...

Hiram Abif, if that is your real name, i dont ever think showing technical proficiency on guitar will ever be 'dead'... i often see alot of people criticise 'shred', its also interesting that alot of the time those same people can't shred...

clarky is one of the very few players who can successfully combine melody and 'shred'... i think instead of challenging him you should take a step back and aprreciate the man's skill...

matt ... could be cool, but how we do it brings up a pickle... i dont want to take part in *another* jam track, how bout we make a progressive song where we start off with an idea and take it in three directions?

GA6O - This is beautiful man.... just beautiful

mick > jaws of life is a cover of petruccis G3 opener...

rich haier > i took a listen to my songs and realised that while alot of them were melodic, alot of them were also very soft, long winded and boring... i wanted to write a couple of balls-to-the-wall rock progressive rock songs, which resulted in intencity, and this new one, which is a lot more progressive than i have ever done, and alot more reliant on 'riffage'... all i can say is you have to push yourself, set goals of what type of music you want to write, and go and write it... expand your influences, i have been listening to some old fashioned rock [audioslave/ratm, tool, metallica, messugah, as well as the other usual suspects of mr petrucci and dream theater...]

and anyway! what do you need to learn? you have the 'write' idea with composition, you have written a lot of different styles of music, which is great practice... you have written a prog monster, a sombre classical piece, some nice death metal riff-based songs... i think all the doctor needs to order is some confidence...
