Hello everyone and Joe!

How important does all guitar players here feel it is to learn where all the notes are on the fretboard? as in being able to very quickly say what notes you are playing?

Yer I understand where your coming from but there is knowing the alphambet and its order but its whether you could quikky say the 1st 3rd and 5ths letter of the alphabet or whether you know the alphabet in 5different places!!

its definately an interesting way of looking at it. My question really is whthere its essential to know where every note is in every position without having to think about it. not like what comes after B.

I have probably made no sense so im gonna halt my quest for knowledge for another day!!

Cheers for replying though Ethn - its appreciated

Dont you find that understanding guitar/music can be the most frustrating thing in life!! you spend many frustrating days working on something and getting no where and then when your about to give up all hope it all fits together and the practice pays off and your love for guitar grows and grows.

Wish it could be a bit more of a smooth ride with less of the frustrations!

Hi Joe!

Trutina - I can sort of help with your question. Its just about what sounds correct. In a scale you would have G, A, B , C, D , E , F# then G. You could write G, A, B, C, D, E, Gb butthat would not run in sequential order. Take the scale of F - F, G, A Bb C D E F - this has a Bb as A# would make it 2 A's which would sound wrong. even though they are the same note its just how its correctly written.

You'll notice that in some cases say C# - C# D# E# F# G# A# B# C# - the E# is actually really an F and the B# a C - its just how it is written -

hope this makes some sense

clarky - I have been reading through your theory posse stuff - cheers for all the input I have found it a great help!! its nice to see someone who likes to take the time to help people out by giving carfeully planned out answers!!

One question I have is - on one of your inputs you write about writing a piece in A Dorian - for this you use the example of a I, IV, V progression. you write this as being Am, D, C - why is it not Am, D, E?? is it being the A dorian is from the G scale are you referring to the IV and V being from G? Hope you understand my question!!
