clarky...bit of trouble...thumb positioning...you told me to keep the thumb behind the neck at pretty much all times...now..vai does this too...except in some places he doesn't..sometimes he does..sometimes he doesn't...sitting down..i can keep my thumb behind the neck at most times..but standing up..about 10th/11th fret or higher and on the top 3 or 4 strings...i need to put my thumb over the top to play....also may help towards the problem of playing fast and acuratly..(i cant spell).. as for excersises for speed and accuracy...i can do the ist pos 3 string maj scale shape in A upto about 90 bpm in 16ths...but only a couple of strings at a time..triplets are fine at that speed. also..i noticed on petrucci's board an excersise from vinnie moore's instructional video of some chromatic excersises..like 1,2,3,4 on each string and go up a semitone up the neck so..2,3,4,5 and then 3,4,5,6 etc...

that was a long post...time to wake up now clarky..lol

mikesb...yeah..i'm not the knuckle dragging on the ground person...only in the morning..lol....i'm sorta between satch, vai and petrucci positions..a bit lower than petrucci though...cant get a decent postion..its either too low or too high...i have a di marzio clip-lock strap so its adjustable to the millimetre effectively.

and for you F1 fans...aussie grand prix this weekend..and a joke on montoya..Juan Pablo Montoya's preparations for the Australian Grand Prix were disrupted today (Wednesday) when he was the subject of a joke interview by a satirical TV show in the middle of a news conference. After asking a couple of bizarre questions, both the show's 'journalists' then received phone calls and ignored Montoya, who finally stormed out of the room when asked by one of the comedians if he wanted to play a round of golf with his mother.

lol...

clarky..interesting stuff about them 6ths..lucky i had some paper and a pen here...(i'm in the library you see..) as for the strap stuff...depends on what i'm playing..take love of god which is almost all about 7th fret or higher..i cant remember how i play it now...err..well..sitting down i play mostly with the thumb over..in particulary roughly 12th fret and above...as for standing..i'll have to see. always with me (etc..)..the main mellody bit round 4th to 8th fret..thumb over the top both sitting and standing...apart from the little legato bit at the end..where my thumb is behind the neck..stuff like that..legato licks round 8th fret i would guess on lower 3/4 strings my thumb qould be behind the neck. next time we have a jam.(.hopefully mowlie can come along too..we can bot travel down together since he lives closeish to me)....i'll (try to) play those 2 songs for you and see what goes where..including stupid facial expressions too..lol

exams next week...oh yay.

that new tv channel...starts may 26th here in uk and/or europe..not sure which..and apparently having cartoon characters too...now a dave k cartoon character has got to be the most funniest thing this ice age...i'm looking forward to it..lol

clarky.."German 6ths, Nea-6ths, Plagal Cadence, Interrupted Cadence, Tierce de Picardi, Appogiatura, Acciacatura, Suspension etc etc.. "....thing is..i dont have a flying fuck of what that means..lol...can you explain? as for strap thingy...practise standing up i guess is the easier solution.

i'm thinking of teaching guitar when this course finishes in the summer...any tips or whether i should wait a bit?? what should i work on??

get well soon Bill!! i'll pray for a speedy recovery back to full health.

i like the new look site

clarky...i cant remember..whichever is the easiest to explain and forms the basis of the others..if thats possible.

"he who walks with a limp runs with a hop"... lol!!

and

"man with green thumbs good gardener.. man with purple fingers short sighted carpenter... " lol!!!

you have great wisdom clarky...lol..anyway..what do you think of me taking up teaching after the acm course has finished in the summer?? i need some extra cash...but i want to teach the stuff right...chances are i'm going to go thru nu punk and busted.,.with some musicaly short sighted kids...and practically no theory.

any advice from anyone else about teaching? i asked a week ago and no-one replied. any tips or whether i should wait a bit?? what should i work on??

eta..yeah...i have had private lessons before..for about 2 years or something..and now at the acm..which is useful i guess..seeing how they teach the basics to a bunch of musical dummies....

edit...and also i saw on petrucci's msg board..about someone asking similair stuff...that its good to continue stuff..like do a song one week..and then continue that the next week..see how they've progressed on the song and if they have learnt how it works and learnt how to play it and understand why it works.

vfrrocker..what new placement is that for clarky??

finger strength? hmm..frets 5,6,7,8 on each string...picking only the first note...and then go back down...then do 5,6,7,8,7,6,5 etc...stuff like that would help. making sure all notes are of equal volume..

is that how you spell equal?? i'm sure its wrong...

ok..so i'm not home yet..

clarky....you emailed the theory stuff to me sometime ago...so it'll be on the computer at home. i was going to print it off...but its alot of pages. i did read thru them as you put them up on here..i would probably understand most of it..but i'll go through it again..and i'll get back to you. the teaching stuff...i feel confident enough...just as though i sell myself correctly...i know the guy in the music store..and he can tell people who are beginners looking for a private tutor..he knows me quite well. say that i'm a rock person/player..not a classical player..or jazz player or irish dance player..or century old mexican kind of flameco stuff.
