Alright, I just got back from my school gig where we played Outbound (the first live performance of Outbound ever on record! HA!).

Thanks soooo much to Anuj and Billy, you guys are awesome! We practiced ONCE together and pulled in for a pretty good performance!

Joe and the G3 crew did Voodoo Child for the... 2001? -- show I think. I can't remember what year that was, but it kicked ass. I really loved that concert, right in front of Joe. I'm not talkin NEAR Joe, I mean I coulda reached out and touched his feet if it weren't for those bouncer type guys.

Theory Buffs,
It's time to help a fellow theory guy in need... I'm getting ready for my IB Music Theory exam, and came upon some terms I realized I am not familiar with.

Cross-Rhythms, I think I'm pretty clear on this: shifted accents pretty much (like an 8/8 bar in 3+3+2, or a 9/8 in 2+2+2+3), but question: What about bars of 9/8 in four bar phrases spaced in 4? i.e. 4+4+4+4+4+4+4+4+4= 4(9/8)

edit: --specifically, I'm talking about rehearsal 40 in Rite of Spring in the violins for those that have a score handy--
I'm not sure about this since it's not really a shifting pattern, though it is shifted, and it also does not repeat every measure.

Pantonicism: I don't really get this. Movable tonic, yeah, but any good examples anyone can think of?

Also, additive rhythms: as I understand it, this is just an asymetrical meter (excluding divisive rhythms like 3/4 and some variations thereupon). Am I on with this one? Like, 5/8 in (2/8 + 3/8) = additive, but 5/8 in (5/16 +5/16) or even (10(4/64)) = divisive.

Thanks for the help.

Phrydom,
The way I've been imagining cross-rhythms is kind of like a counter point kind of thing (which is easy to see w/ Stravinsky, not so much w/ more common music)... there'll be a section of 6/8, with the strings going in 2 phrases of 3, but then, all of a sudden, he introduces a new horn melody that is in the same exact metrical time, but the accents are displaced such that the horns go in 3 sets of 2. So the rhythmic elements cross over...

Well, it was fun while it lasted, but no more Stu lessons...
Stu has reclaimed his weekends, not enough time with his family.
Boyd, DAMN are you lucky! Talk about timing!

I really appreciate that.

Well, no Sacramento today, gotta work... Could someone let Joe that a Stu-dent (hahahaa... I feel clever : ) ) will be catching him this summer if he's still gonna be at the NGW thing in L.A.? Oh, that reminds me, could someone ask if he'll still be at the summer NGW clinic in L.A.?

gasp!!! four days till I order my bass! and i hope the prices don't go up again... just between thursday and friday, no announcements, shipping is more expensive and the bass is + $25, which kinda keeps me from getting some extra goodies, but it'll still be worth it.

hmmm...
News coverage would be awesome for T2J... I know a few people... I'll see who I can get in touch with. A few people at my school have substantial connections, and maybe I can get my sister to pull some strings (strings! ha! ha... hehn... ya nevermind) in her area (L.A.) for the soCal folks.

Everyone's dream now that Joe is excited about T2J CD:
"Hi, is (your name here) there? This is Joe Satriani, I just wanted to say that I LOVED your track and wanted you to come on tour with me right now!"
hahahahahah...anyways
prez, if by "cool bass tricks" you mean things like what Joe can do on guitar, I'd say no... he does some pick-slap style playing that works real well for the songs... I think I've heard occasional tapping or something, don't remember if it was him though... This would really be more of a question for a Joe fanatic (not that I'm not a fan... but I'm really more of a Stu guy, myself).

Prez,
Stu doesn't mess around with guitar for recording/playing...
Occasionally he'll be writing a song and needs a new perspective, and will try to write with another instrument (usually goes to piccolo bass or keyboards), he may have done some guitar for writing, but he doesn't play it as far as I know.

Boyd,
That's Joe on "You're My World"?
Wow, man... I really love that one... one of my favorite songs. I've got it on one of my mix CDs w/ Stanley Clarke, COE, and Stravinsky ;)

doublepost? double the fun!
less than twenty-four hours from now, I'll have ordered my bass! I'm crossing my fingers still, just to make sure there's not some goofy natural hazard or something...
Alright, just about 18 hours till I can be totally freaky about actually GETTING my bass... hahahahahahaha.

the only non psyching thing was that I had to pay upwards of $80 in sales tax since I'm in the same state :(

Almost done writing "Climb," too... I'll have to finish it before I receive the Carvin, cuz it's in D A D A tuning, and there's NO WAY I'm gonna mess with the Carvin like that!
