njbeast - if you want to check out Dream Theater then get "Images And Words", IMO their best album in terms of sheer jaw-dropping moments.

Hey, I lurk here often without posting, but I've been a fan of Joe's for nearly 15 years now, I've got all his albums (got the Japanese version of SBM) and I've just found out today that I've won aftershow passes!!! Does anybody know how this works? I mean the aftershow part!! I'm sure others here have been backstage after the show and if I search through the posts I will probably find posts of people's experiences, but if anyone could reply to this I'd be most pleased.

Stu Not Boo - thanks, I did get my e-mail from the webmaster. What I was wondering more specifically (might have helped if I'd explained a little better) was, at this aftershow thing, can I take something to get autographed, is it likely I will be allowed a camera for a couple of photos, that kind of thing? I was wondering if anyone here had already attended one of these aftershow events and might be able to clue me in on how it went.

Thanks again!

As an ex-Englishman (been living in the US for the last two years), much like anywhere else, it depends wildly on where you go. If you go to a big chain, you will probably pay about 17 or 18 pounds for a CD, but if you go to a small store, much less. At my favourite store, Windows in Newcastle, I could get new CDs for between 10 and 13 pounds. You just have to shop around, as you do anywhere else.

Wow, what a show in Detroit last night!! It was an excellent setlist, and to see and hear "Crushing Day" performed live was tremendous. The songs from "SBM" came over very well, "Flying..." was as haunting as ever, "Always...." was as beautiful as ever, and I'm still mesmerised by the way Joe plays "The Mystical Potato Head....". It was fantastic to meet Joe backstage too (I was probably the only English person there, nice to meet you Joe!).

Dream Theater are also one of my favourite bands, so all in all I would have to say this was one of the most enjoyable shows I've ever been to. See you on the road next time Joe!!

Ann from Michigan, I am not a guitarist or a musician of any kind (although my dad has played guitar for over 40 years!), but I have loved Joe's music for 15 years now, Dream Theater's for ten and other guitar music for just as long. People that think you can only appreciate this kind of music if you play are morons, and not even worth listening to. You know what you like, I know what I like, it's nobody else's business!!! I just happen to love and appreciate the amazing talent of such wonderful musicians, and nobody can tell me, or anyone else, otherwise.

There was a problem with lawsuits and stuff between Microsoft and the Java provider, Sun, so petty Microsoft did not put Java in with Windows XP, and there are no patches available from them to get it. However, the Sun website has Java for Windows XP, although I haven't tried this particular version out (I managed to get it for XP from Microsoft before they removed it). The link is here:

http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

I hope this is correct, and it works!!

chriscec - that shirt says "Yngwie Who?" on the front, and "Yngwie F**king Malmsteen, That's Who" on the back. It's actually available from Yngwie's Merchandise website.

Yngwie is the logical choice for G3. Yngwie, Joe and Steve are the "Big 3" guitarists from the wave after Van Halen, and it will be fantastic to see them all showing their stuff. I've seen a lot of people saying "I'm not going coz Yngwie's on it". That's the most childish thing I've heard. Even if you really hate him, go after his set and see the people you like! Better yet, go and see him, and maybe you'd be surprised. He's an awesome player. I've met both him and Joe, and Yngwie was actually really cool in person, too. The last two G3s will have included my favourite 4 guitarists, so I'm thrilled.

2 Ton Tessie - you saw Yngwie open for AC/DC? That must have been nearly 20 years ago! Maybe you could give him another chance....

I really think that Yngwie will surprise a lot of people that go to see G3. He puts on a very intense, energetic show. There is nobody out there that attacks their guitar like Yngwie does. With a wisely picked setlist, he could blow everybody away. Even if he sticks to "standards", I think a lot of people will enjoy his performance. A lot of people criticise him without having even seen him, or not having heard much by him, and if those people can try and go in with an open mind, who knows?

The last two G3 tours will have seen my favourite 4 guitar players on them. I can't ask for more than that, personally, and I can't wait for these shows.

Yngwie won't quit this, barring unforeseen circumstances. He only ended his last tour because the singer pissed off and took the drummer with him. Other than that, he loves to play live, and will get a kick out of playing for a G3 crowd. This show will be as good as the last G3 with JP.

36 hours without power and water? That wasn't much fun....

zonin - check out these Yngwie tunes:

Black Star Far Beyond The Sun Icarus' Dream Suite Op. 4 Crying Trilogy Suite Op. 5 Krakatau Eclipse Brothers Sorrow Perpetual Blue

His most famous ones are the first two, Black Star and Far Beyond The Sun, but I would HIGHLY recommend that you check out Crying and Icarus' Dream Suite Op. 4 as well. If you like those and want more recommendations, be sure to ask....

Harvo - if you want to try an Yngwie CD for instrumentals, you'd be best off buying his debut solo CD, Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force. There's a better than average chance that he will play at least two tracks from it on the G3 tour, Black Star and Far Beyond The Sun, and possibly Evil Eye as well. His other albums contain mostly vocal tracks, so that's your best bet for a starting point.

Cool #9, Joe's here!

I'm gonna post my essential 25, even though a poll is coming. It has to be said, this is really hard to do. It killed me to have to leave some tracks out. Ideally, I would have at least five tracks from both "Surfing" and "Flying", but for the sake of balance, I've had to cut something from everything, or I'd have a 40 track Essential selection!

So, in chronological order (someone else can sort out the running order!), here are my 25:

The Snake
Driving At Night
Rubina
Surfing With The Alien
Crushing Day
Always With Me, Always With You
Satch Boogie
Flying In A Blue Dream
Big Bad Moon
I Believe
Back To Shalla-Bal
Cryin'
War
Summer Song
Time Machine
Dweller On The Threshold
Cool #9
If
House Full Of Bullets
Raspberry Jam Delta V
Devil's Slide
Borg Sex
Mind Storm
Oriental Melody
Starry Night

I still can't believe some of the tracks I've had to leave out!!

I don't think Yngwie will be all that bothered by references to the "focking fury", after all, that incident on the plane happened in 1988, he's a lot more mellow now!

I'm just looking forward to seeing all 3 of them unleash the fury on the same stage, it's gonna be an awesome sight! Wish they'd announce a date in the Detroit area though....

Just a note regarding Yngwie on drums - he's actually played drums quite a bit! On his 2000 tour of Japan, he actually played drums in his gigs! At a certain point in the show, he would get up alongside John Macaluso at the drumkit, and they would have a 'drum battle', as the Japanese liked to call it.

I never saw it, but they did it at every Japanese date on that tour.

crushing day

I used to write retro video game reviews for a website, and the guy decided to stop doing them. I enjoyed it, so I decided I'd learn how to create my own website. I bought a book called HTML for the World Wide Web, by Elizabeth Castro, and had a working website within two weeks, despite having no previous website design or coding experience.

I would also recommend you check out English PC mags, as they often have lots of free tools on cover mounted disks (I got Paint Shop Pro 5 for free! You will certainly need some kind of graphics editor.).

Anyway, here's my website, as an example of what you can knock up in very little time, with no prior experience, with the right kind of book/tutorial:

The thing with Dreamweaver is....it's EXPENSIVE!!

I just wanted to teach myself how to create a website as a little hobby, and there was no way I was spending that kind of money on it! So, I bought a book on HTML for 14 dollars, and it's working out well for me so far. If I want to take my hobby to another level, then I might consider spending more. But for starters, a tutorial book and free applications from magazine cover disks have worked wonders!

Yngwie is playing an all instrumental set. He's got way more than enough instrumentals in his catalogue to fill a G3 slot, so I doubt he'll be writing any new ones especially. I just hope he plays a few that either have never been played live before or haven't been played for ages, along with the classics.

I can never understand it when people say Yngwie only plays one solo over and over again. Sure he has his favourite phrases, but I own every song he's ever recorded, and with the exception of two sections that he's repeated, none of the solos even sound remotely "the same" to me.

Mind you, I'm not a musician, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

As for the speed thing, I don't care how fast anyone plays, I just care about how good I find the music to be. Yngwie, Joe and Steve can all play fast, but it's what they play that sets them on a different level for me. I can't stand the likes of Impellitteri and especially Michael Angelo. They can play really fast, but I don't find anything musically appealing about what they play.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I've never liked Yngwie's music because he plays fast, I like it because it connects with me. I love what he does, and I couldn't care less how many notes per second he can play. Anyone that only likes music because it's fast is an idiot.

I love all of the G3 guys, and I'm not a musician. I happen to think they all make incredibly beautiful and inspirational music, Yngwie included (yes, he's my favourite of the three, but they are all excellent). I don't mind that people don't like what he does, but I think he does get underrated on this board, and doesn't get the respect he deserves for what he's achieved.

pizza man - Yngwie is about 6' 3". That's nowhere near short where I come from, are you an Amazonian? ;)

I'm sure he is difficult to work with though, he is very demanding.

One day I'm going to post my story of the time I hung out with Yngwie for a night, and put him in a positive light for once, seeing as everyone here is so negative about him....

pizza man - I'm 6' exactly, and Yngwie is taller than me, so he's certainly not short.

As for his behaviour, well, I know he's definitely NOT an angel! He is human though, and humans have bad days. Maybe that was one of them. He's definitely temperamental though, and could possibly go off it like that more than most. Having said that, he IS mellower these days, but he definitely will NOT take any shit, or any slack performances.

I've met him twice though, and he couldn't have been nicer or more fun to hang out with.
