Hello everyone, this is Eva from Stockholm, Sweden posting for the first time ever... but you seem friendly enough, so I should be OK.. :) I have known about Joe for a few years but started listening to him only recently, after "discovering" him on the G3-album with Johnson&Vai (that really is an outstanding album!). I'm a big Vai-fan, but just give it time... The more I listen to Joe, the more I realize he's a great musician and I can't wait to get my hands on the SBM-album.....

A friend told me earlier about John Petrucci, and when I saw that Dream Theater is touring with Joe I got even more curious. I'd like to listen to their music, but I don't where to start. Any recommendations for the best "beginner's album"?

Thanks a lot for a great site and even greater forum, definitely one of the best out there. :)

Ciao!

Thanks to the guys who's been giving me tips on which DT-album to buy.... I appreciate it! So far, I've got almost as many suggestions as persons giving them... <grin>. I guess I asked for it.

The Local Person- Thanks for the tip on LTE, I'll try and check them out. May I ask why your nickname is what it is? :) Just being nosey...

jakeebub That's a great idea!!! I'd be sure to buy every single one of them.... :) There really should be a collection series with all the great guitarists throughout history, I guess the only problem would be to choose which one should be in it! Or why choose, they could just release a new figure every other month... C'mon guys, let's hear your suggestions for who should be in this series........

Mr Nick If you look at the top of this page there's a link to something called Europe Road Photos Online. Click on that one and you'll come to the webmaster's news page where you'll find the link for the road photos. Enjoy! :) \\ Eva

Stu not boo I stumbled across your post about the hidden CD in the Vai-box and I just couldn't believe it... naturally, I threw myself at the box and sure enough, after some violent actions involving a pair of screwdrivers, I found it! <grin> I can't thank you enough for sharing that info.... but how did you learn it was there? Did you buy two boxes just to shred the other, in case something was placed there or what? LOL I would never come up with the thought of wrecking a box I bought for $100...... which was what I had to pay for it here in Sweden.

BTW, I finally bought SBM and I thought I would post my reviews of the songs here, matching them against yours and see if they are totally different or not.... :) it will take a few days more, though.

Thanks again!

Happy 46th, Joe... Hope you have a great one with many more to come....

I am really envious of all you people who get to go to one of Joe's concerts this year... He's not coming to Sweden or Scandinavia this time. I was thinking of going to London to see him July 18 (I did that with Steve Vai in Dec last year), but it was too expensive and I couldn't get any vacation anyway, so... All of you attending that show give him an extra hug and a shout from me, OK? ;-)

Stu not boo So you mean you weren't the first one to discover the thing about the Vai-box? Hmmm... I guess I'll have to tear down that altar I built in your honor... LOL Nah, just kidding. My thanks to everyone ever posting anything about it...

For anyone else that cares, here is the first part of my SBM-review. Just a precaution: I don't play guitar, or any other instruments. I just love the guitar and how it can be played in so many different styles, but I'm no expert in any sense...

ORIENTAL MELODY- The opening is very exotic and suggestive, only to thrashed apart by an awesome riff that I really like, and then the song just grows on you. Definitely one of my favorites on the album. But the ending is a bit sudden.

BELLY DANCER- I can't make up my mind about this song, do I like it or not? For the most part it's nothing special to me, but I like the part 0.57-1.37, and the immediate part after that is good too. Austin, what do you mean with backward drums? In what sense are they backwards?

STARRY NIGHT- A very catchy song, sounds almost "pop" to me (but I guess that's a forbidden word here LOL). I like 2.40-3.25, especially the first part where the acoustic tone is more apparent. I agree with Austin that this is a good choice for a single, it could easily get to the top of the charts if they would only play it...

More to follow soon... Any comments?

Stu not boo OK, I see what you mean now, I just listened to Belly Dancer again and now that you've pointed it out to me I can hear it. I just didn't realize how they did it. It's a cool effect and it reminds me of some other song from Joe, but I can't remember the name now... Pretty well known, I'm sure you know which one I'm talking about. Oh well, I'll just have to listen through every song until I find it... There are worse things than that! LOL

Part two of the review coming up soon......

OK, here comes part two of my SBM-review...

CHORDS OF LIFE- A beautiful song that really grows on you. I like the harp addition, it gives structure to the melody somehow. The first solo comes as such a contrast to the slow beginning, and then it slows down again... wonderful. It's got a nice jamfeeling to it that I like. Another big favorite.

MIND STORM- Right. The most mentioned song on this forum... How do I tackle this...? :) this is not one of my favorites, it's too... massive or something, I don't know. :-/ I think it's a great song when I'm in the right mood though, the melody loop is nice and kinda catchy. But other than that, it doesn't do very much for me......

SLEEP WALK- I like this cover-version. It's very hawaiian, very soothing. Is it only me who get's reminded of the ball night in 'Back to the Future 1'...? LOL

Review part three to come soon, if anyone is still interested now that I gave thumbs down to Mind Storm... lol

Austin, have a great vacation and thanks for your comments. Don't forget to pack your SBM! :) And drive/fly carefully!

I missed the webcast too with only so much... when I finally got the connection up and running they had turned all the lights on and people were leaving the arena. Oh well, I'll grab it when the excellent webmaster puts it up here soon.

My own vacation is coming up too in a few weeks. I'll be going to the island Crete in Greece, lots of sun, bath and good food! And plenty of exquisite guitar music too...... my suitcase will be jammed with CD's!

All right, SBM-review part three...

NEW LAST JAM- I love this song. The opening riff reminds me of the cartoon show 'Inspector Gadget'... anyone remember it? LOL Anyway, the drums in the beginning are awesome and the whole song is really groovy. Classic Satch, and it really sounds like they had a really good time recording it.

MOUNTAIN SONG- This one kinda sneaks up on ya'... Didn't really like it at first but now it's more than OK to listen to. The guitars chanting the melody together is a very cool treat.

WHAT BREAKS A HEART- The opening wah-sound made me hesitant at first, but it soon disappeared. A very nice song, I like the part 0.40-1.21 and also the part after that. But my fav part is the alien cries 1.54-2.18- I can vividly picture the poor lonesome alien walking around, trying desperately to find someone to mate with and giving out these lamenting sounds..... LOL sorry, I guess my imagination took me on a walk there...... Back to work I go. ;)

SBM-review part four....

SEVEN STRING- The opening riff is super cool, as is the main theme. Otherwise this song, just like Mind Storm, is very much depending on what mood I'm in when I'm listening to it. If I'm in a good mood this song is killer, if I'm in a bad mood it's just a lot of heavy noise..... lol

HILL GROOVE- When Joe is in this mood, however, he's one of my absolute favorites! Not that it happens very often... This song has a very relaxing groove that I really like. Tops!

THE JOURNEY- The part 1.17-1.37 is awesome. I like the overall tone of this one, sounds like they had fun in the studio. The ending sounds totally different, like the beginning of a new track...

OK, the last two songs will be posted tomorrow I guess.....

Master Yoda So you were at Steve's show at Astoria in December? What date? I was there Dec 6, flew from Stockholm Wednesday, spent Thursday in London and saw the show Thursday night and then took a VERY EARLY flight back to Stockholm on Friday... But it was worth it, it was a really cool show! What did you think of it? And Eric Sardinas...? :)

OK, here are the last two songs in my SBM-review. I'll shut up for a while now. ;)

THE TRAVELER- It has a very catchy main riff theme, that keeps coming back to my head every now and then. The part 1.17-1.37 is awesome. But I'm not as huge fan of the wah-sound as Asutin... :)

YOU SAVED MY LIFE- I can't help it but I do have a weak spot for this type of songs... Maybe it's the romantic, feminine side in me talking, I don't know...lol. I'd love to hear it all acoustic. The little heavier wah-sound in the part 2.15-3.02 is really nice!

Done for now, back to work I go... Ciao!

stu_hacking I hope I don't sound too personal, but I just had to say this about your "girlfriend" post. '... I had one once' LOL I agree that if she tried to stop you from listening to Joe, you're better off without her...... You need to find someone, if you haven't already, who actually likes guitars and the sounds they make. There are a few of us out there after all..... Just keep looking! ;) \\ Eva

Ovation1 LOL- imagine Sharon, Arafat and all the other quarreling world leaders sitting together, listening to SBM and stomping their feet and nodding their heads to the rhythm..... and afterwards they look at each other and say 'Hey, we must be crazy, fighting over such petty little things as honor and who owns what land and whatever, when we can make love and listen to strange beautiful music all day long!' <grin> That would really make my day!

ethn cool e-mail address.... LOL

Aahhh....... I have three days and a half left at work before I quit, after that one month of vacation is awaiting me before signing up at university...... it is very peaceful sitting at my desk, clearing up every old paperwork while listening to strange beautiful music. ;) Admittedly it would be better listening to it on full blaze while lying on a cliff somewhere in our beautiful stockholmian archipelago but hey, that time will come too...... For now, all my best wishes to everyone else out there who enjoys life as much as I do in this very moment..... take care.

JS Clone 1 Now I understand your nick... LOL

UF Dean Player Sorry to hear about your engagement- I'm much in the position right now. The 28th of July (Sunday) I would have been sitting on a plane to Oklahoma to visit my boyfriend for a month, but we just broke up... meaning that this long anticipated trip will never happen. :( Thank God for music.... Joe's been helping me out quite a bit.

ethn It's Dragonchild, not Dragonfly... totally different things. LOL I like them both though, no problem. :)

Michelle, Sharon You totally rock this forum!

Sharon It's actually Yngwie Malmsteen, and he's from Sweden (where I come from). His original name is Yngwe Malmsten, just changed it a little to make it sound better in English I guess. As far as I know, he was one of the first guitar players in the 80's that played really lightning fast, am I right? I haven't heard much of his music, but what I've heard sounded rather boring, just going up and down the scales as fast as possible and not very much variation. I know Steve Vai took over after him in the band Alcatrazz in the 80's, which was quite a shock for the fans at the first concert... lol

All right, BLUE is in the house..... Gee, I never thought I'd live to see one of my biggest idols actually TALKING to his fans......LOL This site rocks! Most of the artists today don't seem to have such close contact with their audience, but Joe sure is different... I like it!

Joe, you're welcome at my house anytime.... LOL Take it easy and relax before the next part of the tour- but I'm quite upset you didn't choose to come to Sweden this time around... have you ever been there by the way? You've got quite a few fans over here too, you know. Well, take care now, bye bye. :)

Yeah, I checked Vai's site yesterday, it looks OK I think. Maybe most of you already know about it, but in the Photo Gallery they have posted pics from the 2001 G3-tour, they were fun to see. (It's in the Sights and Sounds section)

I was at the Thursday show also, so I agree with Master Yoda here that it would be cool to have that one released. :) Then you would see me, hanging from the balcony, screaming and waving my arms in the air.....

I took a picture of the sign outside announcing the concert, which was very funny. On the top it says 'Steve Vai 6.30-10.30' and below that they proudly present 'Gay Night 11-1' or something like that.... LOL I wonder if the band stuck around for the aftershow there!

Hey, wasn't Austin supposed to go see that Deep Purple-show? I bet he was surprised when Joe suddenly showed up... his review will be interesting.

Man, it feels really good being on vacation at last! Three more weeks until university starts... and those weeks will be filled with Joe-music, Vai-music, other rockmusic and hanging out at the pool hall, practising my pool game...... Ahhh, life is SOOO good........

Sharon My mom will be 49 in November. When she turned 45, me, my dad and my brother gave her a tattoo for a gift, which was something she had wanted for some time. She now has a major scorpion on her right shoulder (since she is a scorpion herself) and a couple of months ago she had a dolphin made on her upper left arm..... Now she is hooked! My dad is hoping she's not getting any more than these two..... he's afraid she'll be looking like a biker..... LOL It felt pretty weird having a mom that got herself a tattoo before I did..... But it's cool and I totally respect her for that. So go for it! Just be careful to pick something with a value that you feel will last for the rest of your life.... something out of Joe's world, perhaps? :)

On the topic of Michael Hedges- I love the album Oracle, it is very relaxing music and his style of playing is very inspirational even though I don't play guitar myself......
