hi everybody, wingn007, I'm currently using a steinberger(strat style body)loaded w/dimarzio evolutions or a heavliy modified fender strat. From there I go into a crybaby wah, to a rack-mounted line 6 pod, to a digitech 2101 effects processor, to a 100w power amp into either a marshall 4/12 or a fender 1/12 depending on the venue I'm playing at. looking forward to seeing everyone @ Joe's Toronto show, I'm in the 200 section. p.s. if anyone is in the Newmarket Ont. area on Sat.Aug 24th, I'm doing a showcase for the music school I teach at. email me & I'll give you all the info. talk to ya later Danny K lydianlounge@hotmail.com

Greetings to all in Satriani.com I have posted a few times before, but I've never formally introduced myself. To start, my name is Dan, & I've been a guitaraholic for 11 years now. I live just north of Toronto, where I've been a guitar teacher for the last 5 years. I also play in an 80's"hair metal" tribute band called XS, & am just finishing my first instrumental cd. And to top things off, its just a little over 48 hours 'til Joe's show in Toronto & I'm already giddy. Must go play cool #9 now, talk at ya all later.

Hi, I've been a guitar teacher for a number of years now, and I though that I'd share afew thoughts today. One of my students decided that he wanted to learn how to play Tender Surrender(s.vai), so we started working on the tune together. He got all the melody parts up til the solo. When it came to playing the lead he just couldn't get it to sound like the disc. Technically he was capable of pulling of the licks but, there was a certain element missing. Feel. When discussing this with him I asked if he ever worked on playing what he was feeling at the moment, putting the days events into a musical statement. The answer.........no. He said that about 90% of his practice time was used running scales, arpeggio's & other technical exercises. The point behind all this is that sometimes you have to put technique aside and play what's in your heart to truely reach that level where you & your instrument are one. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not bashing shred, instrumental music such as Vai, Satch, Yngwie, & Jason Becker is a large part of my influence. The one comment I left my student to think about was this - if you practice typing everyday you will become quite fast, but that doesn't mean that you will write the next great novel. Remember it's what's inside each of you that makes us all unique individuals, & players. Along the same lines, the song of the day is "I Will Remember You" - Sarah McLaughlin

js clone 1- I always was told to set my floyd rose trems parralell to the guitar body. Doing that decreased string breakage & made the tuning rock solid no matter how much abuse I put the trem through. I ususally end up breaking the high E string on my steinburger once a month but thats due to extreme pitch bends(4th - 5th up) so take a look at what you're doing at the time of the break.

Hi everybody in Satchland. I know I'm probably going to get slammed for this but enough with the Yngwie bashing. The guy may have a HUGE ego, but he also has a HUGE amount of talent on the guitar to back it up. Yngwie's Rising Force album inspired me to study Paganini's music and add that classical element to my playing. Joe even said it himself once, Thank god for Yngwie.

Hey everyone, I know this is Joe's site, but since Steve's is still having things done to it, maybe someone here can answer my question. Does anyone know why Steve Vai isn't using 7 string guitars as much as he use to?

geez, I go away for a weekend and have 9!!!!!!! pages to read through when I get back.
To Nick Lee congrats on the silver, way to go.
to Whojack hope to see you & Nick @ my show in Newmarket on Thurs Sept 26th & can anyone come out & play at the restaraunt?
To our friend with the amp question(sorry I forgot your nick), go with a line 6, I've used a rack mounted pod for 3 years now and it has never let me down whether I'm doing a rock gig, studio work, or sitting in an orchestra pit.
have a great day every one

Hi everyone in T2J land,
I would like to post some of my music & I was wondering if anyone out there had some advice on how to format it (wav or mp3), & is IUMA a good place to post.
TO JOE - how do you feel about using a 7 string guitar, I just recently got my 1st 7 string & love it.

to all the theory buffs out there, a book you might be interested in wrapping your head around is Ted Greene's Chord Chemestry. It contains just about every chord that you'd every want to know.(all those outherworldly chords that Steve & Joe use are in there). It also explains the theory behing the chords. The only hitch is you have to be able to read music because it doesn't contain any tab.

How do you get a guitarist to turn down? Put a chart in front of them.
How do you get them to stop playing? Put notes on it.
Sad but true reality of our instrument. I teach gutiar & get alot of students who want to go to Humber College or York University(2 maj. music schools in Toronto Ont.Canada)but can't read a jazz chart. So my BIG tip of the day to all the aspiring string benders out there is to learn to read standard notation. It'll open up a whole world of music to you that is not available in tab.
Clarky - keep up the lessons. I studied jazz composition so I find the talk about classical compostion fasinating.

To Pete Mulas, Phrygian Dominant, & Stu Not Boo thank you for listening & thank you for your comments. There's more to come in the next couple of weeks.
Phrygian Dominant I checked out your site www.sharpfour.com, there's some pretty cool stuff there. I'd buy a disc but master card doesn't like me very much right now.
That's all for now folks, have a great day T2Jer's

I usually get - what Vai album is that song off. Sometimes I take it as a compliment & sometimes it pisses me off because we just try to play with our own voice.

Death Cube - I'd say Randy Rhodes was my first major influence, before that it was just your standard rock fair G'N'R, Iron Maiden, Metallica ect...
Matt King - I'll check out your site this weekend I popped by but didn't have a chance to listen yet.
JSCLONE1 - thanks for visiting my site & the comments, there will be polished versions of Shazam & Changes up in the next couple weeks, I'll keep you posted. I stopped by your IUMA site a while ago, I like that classical piece, not that many players are into that style right now,so it's refreshing to hear.
Anyways that's all for today, keep the music alive & have a HAPPY TURKEY DAY EVERONE!!!! :))

Pete Mulas & Matt King - check your iuma comment pages.

My vote for G3 would be either Steve Morse or Shawn Lane, both monster players.
Whojackafibby asked this a while ago, but I would like to bring it up again. All the Toronto area T2Jer's we should try to get together & have our own G3 type of thing. Think about it, it would be cool.

r6r - don't get me started on my feelings toward the pre-fab pop crap that seems to get 99.9999% of record copanies attention. It seems that it's not about talent anymore but just a numbers game.

I didn't mean to come of as bitter or against "pre-fab pop crap" (to quoke myself) some of it is quite good (fyi greg howe is in the backing band for insync & enrique )& as a session guitarist pays my bills, but it's the behind the scene politicts that gets under your skin. But enough about that, have a great weekend everyone. And remember keep smilin'
