Hey everyone--

Some of the concert reviews for the EOC tour mention that Joe played "Clouds Race Across the Sky," "Down, Down, Down," and "A Train of Angels" at some of the earlier shows. I have the Live in S.F. DVD, but he had swapped those songs out of the setlist by then.

I'd love to hear the live versions of those three songs. Does anyone know if Joe played those songs on one of the webcasts from the tour? Anyone know where I can get an audio or video copy?

You can reply by posting here or e-mailing me -- TTJ members can view my e-mail by clicking my name.

Thanks

I was reading a bunch of old TTJ posts from last year, and I noticed that a few tired complaints keep popping up time and time again. I've compiled some common lines into one generic post -- see if this sounds familiar:

Joe, why don't you ever come to [INSERT NAME OF HOMETOWN]? You have [INSERT TOTAL POPULATION OF HOMETOWN] fans here that would all pay to see you.

I can't believe you never play [FAVORITE OBSCURE SONG #1] or [FAVORITE OBSCURE SONG #2] at your shows.

The last show I went to see was great, but the [INSERT FAVORITE EXPLICIT ADJECTIVE] sound man was [INSERT SECOND-FAVORITE EXPLICIT ADJECTIVE]!

Why did you pick [INSERT NAME OF PAST G3 GUEST -- PROBABLY YNGWIE MALMSTEEN OR ROBERT FRIPP] for G3?

You should pick [INSERT NAME OF POPULAR GUITAR HERO THAT WILL NEVER APPEAR ON THE G3 TOUR BECAUSE HE IS EITHER TOO FAMOUS OR DEAD] or [INSERT NAME OF RANDOM MUSICIAN THAT NOBODY'S EVER HEARD OF] next time.

And by the way, why does everyone here seem to hate [INSERT NAME OF PAST G3 GUEST -- PROBABLY YNGWIE MALMSTEEN OR ROBERT FRIPP]? Can you play better than him?

And a special message to [INSERT NAME OF WELL-INTENTIONED TTJ MEMBER HERE]: I can't believe that you belive that [INSERT RELIGIOUS, POLITICAL, OR PERSONAL HYGIENE ISSUE HERE]. Just because you're a bigoted, ignorant, short-sighted, knuckle-dragging Nazi doesn't give you the right to judge other people.

Later, [INSERT TTJ ALIAS]

That's cool that Joe played Satch Boogie on a Les Paul . . . what do you figure he did with the whammy bar parts?

What does Yngwie think of Joe's playing?

Yngwie Malmsteen did a "blindfold" test for Guitar World in 1994 where he had to listen to an unidentified song and give his opinion of the guitar playing. The first song they played him was "The Mighty Turtle Head." Here's what Yngwie had to say:

MALMSTEEN: I like the groovy intro. Sounds like a Strat. But the soloing going over the song is very bad. It's bent out of shape and out of tune. It's very basic bull---- pentatonic runs. The choice of notes in the solo is completely overdone. That stuff has been done for 30 years! I'm sick and tired off that bending bull----. This is the most run-of-the-mill pentatonic playing I ever heard.

GUITAR WORLD: That was Joe Satriani.

MALMSTEEN: You're kidding! Was he high? He's playing out of tune, and the most boring runs! What I've heard from Satriani before was really good, but this -- this sounds like something someone would play in a garage. After the backwards solo, Joe does some nice stuff with out of phase pickups, which I liked. But the actual solo... I could never dream that was Joe. Out of tune, and terrible.

Too bad . . . I'll stick up for Joe over Yngwie anyday. I wonder if these comments ever came up between Yngwie and Joe later on. I doubt it.

Okay, so I searched some past posts and saw that Yngwie's opinion about "The Mighty Turtle Head" has been mentioned here before . . . sorry.

Apparently Yngwie did another Guitar World blindfold test and had more favorable comments about "Sleepwalk." He said:

I've heard this song many times before. I don't know who's playing on this version, but the slide guitar playing is very good. The guitarist has great expression, and he's playing in tune.

That's more like it.

Those last two snippets from "A Cool New Way" and "One Robot's Dream" almost have an Engines of Creation feel to them, don't you think?
