Little secrets on line
WASHINGTON (AFP) - An ancient secret to unburden? A postcard, a stamp, and any private torment or personal shame can be confided anonymously to the world via an artist's website which has become a new hit of the Internet.
Launched two months ago as an art project, the website PostSecret.com has received already more than 200 edgy, graphic, witty and sad secrets, all submitted namelessly on simple postcards.
"I want to have sex with my therapist," said one, accompanied by a drawing of a couple on the psychiatrist's couch.
"My boyfriend and my family thought I quit smoking two years ago. I didn't (and still smoke)," said another, signed "Closet Smoker".
"I say I'm a vegetarian. But I eat meat on the sly!" said a third, with a sketch of a steak and steak knife as evidence.
The website was created by artist Frank Warren of Germantown, Maryland, just north of Washington. He launched the project by passing out postcards soliciting secrets at art shows. The result, Warren said, gave him a voyeur-like thrill.
"At the beginning of the project, it was fascinating to see the secrets that were arriving in my mailbox daily. Each new card offered a peek into a strangers most private moments," he said.
Many of the confessions are indeed very private and graphic, and come with artful drawings and collages.
One contributor admitted: "When I was young, I drilled a hole in my closet wall and peed in it because I was mad at my parents. The closet smelled for years. I blamed our cat."
Another, mailed from Australia, confided that she was still a virgin but dared not tell her friends.
"Some of the people mailing in secrets seem to be searching for absolution. They want to lighten their burden," Warren surmised.
At the same time, some cards offered proud proclamations of secrets.
"I really enjoy funerals," read one, with a heart penned on it.
"I made love at Artomatic," said another, referring to a Washington art festival.
One card had a torn-out newspaper television schedule with a picture of TV personality Paris Hilton. Inscribed next to it was: "While others pray at church, I bow my head and think about the TV programs I plan on watching."
Some secrets are deeply serious, forcing Warren to weigh publishing them on the website. Two nameless correspondents confessed to having possibly incited friends to kill themselves.
One recalled both having been molested as a child and of later molesting his own brother.
"This card needs a warning. It has more weight. I need to find a way to present that," Warren said.
The idea for the website came from Warren's own interest in people's private mysteries. "I always had a fascination for people's secrets. Maybe it was because I had some secrets I needed to express," he said.
"Two of the secrets are mine," he confessed, without saying which ones.
The key to the website's success is the postcard format, Warren said.
"There is something about taking that pencil, sending out that secret in the mail. The fact that people have to mail a postcard creates a filter.
"It really is one of the reasons so many of the secrets on my site are thoughtful," he said at a continuing show of the postcards in Washington's Anne C. Fisher gallery.
Moreover, as more people visit the website, the confessions breed new postcards. "When people go to the site, they start to recognize secrets similar to the one they are carrying, or to admit secrets to themselves."

Motörhead's Lemmy working on new album
Syndicated columnist Marilyn Beck reports that Motörhead frontman Lemmy is working on a new solo project. Called Lemmy & Friends, the CD will team the singer-bassist with Dave Grohl, Reverend Horton Heat and members of Metallica, among others. Lemmy says, "I've got seven tracks already done... I want to get Janet Jackson to do this great lost single called 'Black Cat.'" He'll take a break from working on the new album on Sunday night to find out if he and the other members of Motörhead have won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance. They're nominated for Whiplash, a song they covered on Metallic Attack: A Tribute to Metallica.
In related news, Lemmy will be one of the guests on talk show host Dennis Miller'S Grammy special tonight. Miller's other guests will include singer Brian McKnight, producer Phil Ramone, and Grammy show producer Pierre Cossette. Dennis Miller airs on CNBC at 8p.

Valentine's Day Romance Tips
5> Phrases to avoid at dinner: "fully tax-deductible";
"violation of my parole"; "by decree of Lord Satan";
and "unpaid humor-list contributor."
4> If there's any chance whatsoever she might sleep with you,
do the safe thing -- get rid of those "Star Wars" sheets.
3> When role-playing, do not suggest that she be the hot chick
at work.
2> Start your date as late as possible to lessen the odds your
true self will accidentally surface.
and the Number 1 Valentine's Day Romance Tip...
1> Your choice of gift tells a woman what you think about her.
Roses, for example, say, "No chocolate for you, tubby!"

The "Buffalo Theory" of Beer:
A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the
herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are
killed first.
This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general
speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing
of the weakest members.
In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest
brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells,
but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.
In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells,
making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.
That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers, and that's why beer is so GOOD for you.

Non-Lethal Weapons Considered by the U.S. Military
5> The RonJeremizer: Very, very large-sized condoms air-dropped
behind enemy lines to demoralize their troops.
4> Mirrors of Ass Distortion: Strategically placed funhouse
mirrors demoralize enemy by making them believe that those
fatigues DO make their asses look fat.
3> The Dem Bomb: Turns fighters into Democrats, upon which they
immediately throw down their weapons, draw up signs and
organize protests, and nobody pays them any mind.
2> The Auntie-Combat Squad: Send in aunts to give cheek pinches
and big wet kisses.
and the Number 1 Non-Lethal
Weapon Considered by the U.S. Military...
1> Raffi-tillary: Imbeds popular toddlers' songs into enemy's
heads, causing incessant rapping of forehead with butt of
rifle in an attempt to drive out the never-ending chorus.

Letourneau, Ex-Pupil to Wed After Prison
SEATTLE (AP) - Mary Kay Letourneau plans to marry the former sixth-grade pupil with whom she had two children, months after her release from prison for raping him, according to an online bridal registry.
Letourneau, 43, and Vili Fualaau, 22, set a wedding date of April 16, according to their registry at a department store. Letourneau served 7 1/2 years on a 1997 conviction for raping Fualaau, who has said in the past that he hoped to wed his former teacher.
"It's been long overdue," Noel Soriano, a friend of the couple, told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in a story published Monday. "It's going to be fabulous, seeing them get hitched finally."
A lawyer for Fualaau and a friend of Letourneau did not immediately return calls Monday seeking further comment.
Letourneau was a 34-year-old married mother of four when she began a sexual relationship with her then-12-year-old elementary school student in 1996. She was pregnant with Fualaau's first child when she was arrested in 1997 and ordered to serve a six-month sentence for second-degree child rape.
One month after she was released, Letourneau was caught having sex with Fualaau in her car. She pleaded guilty in 1997 to two charges of child rape, and gave birth to the couple's second daughter while serving her 7 1/2-year sentence. Fualaau's mother is raising their two daughters, aged 6 and 7.
Shortly after Letourneau was released from prison last August, the pair successfully petitioned a judge to lift a no-contact order that had barred them from seeing each other.
Soriano said Fualaau proposed last fall, but the couple has been trying to keep wedding details a secret. Details are yet to be completed, but plans call for their daughters to be flower girls, he said.
"They have gone through a lot," Soriano said. "That they lasted this long proves how strong their love is."
