Driving Instructor Gives Lesson in Road Rage

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) - A Dutch driving instructor hit a knife-wielding fellow motorist with a baseball bat during a fight over his student's skills, police said Wednesday.

"Words were exchanged between the instructor and the man who pulled a knife and then the other hit him with a baseball bat," a police spokeswoman said.

The 27-year-old driving instructor and a 51-year-old man with a head injury and a mild concussion were arrested and must appear in court.

WENDY'S CHILI

I think a board of inquiry should check out cuthbert1776's figures - since he knows so much about the chili preparation. Remember, you always return to the scene of the crime.

Do The Stu - it wasn't real clear how big the finger was - could have been just a part of the finger. Plus, I have "shoveled" food into my mouth before - not quite seeing what was going in - wonder what I could have swallowed.

The latest Aerosmith was ok - not a huge fan. I would like to listen to the blurbs from the Joe Perry cd on iTunes before deciding whether to buy the cd or individual tracks from iTunes.

Guitarist Rod Price of Foghat Dies at 57

WILTON, New Hampshire (AP) - Guitarist Rod Price, founding member of the blues boogie band Foghat, died Tuesday after falling down a stairway at his home, a family friend said. He was 57.

The London native's solos drove Foghat to three platinum and eight gold records during the band's quarter-century career. After many years of touring he settled in Wilton in 1994.

Many in town knew Price as a loving father who never missed his son's baseball, soccer or basketball games. Fewer people knew of Price's musical background.

Price had played with Champion Jack Dupree, Eddie Kirkland, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon and Honey Boy Edwards.

In recent years, Price concentrated on his blues projects, cutting several CDs and giving private guitar lessons at his home.

Hum - that is a pretty long piece of a finger (Wendy's Chili Story). Not sure what happened - but you could just shovel food in, talking to someone, not watching what is on your spoon (or spork) and as you chew, feel something in your mouth.

Sizemore Sentenced for Drug-Related Charge

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Actor Tom Sizemore was sentenced Thursday to 17 months in jail and four months in a drug treatment facility for repeatedly failing drug tests while on probation.

Later in the day, he was sentenced in a separate felony methamphetamine case to additional inpatient drug treatment. Sizemore, 43, was allowed to remain free while he appeals a domestic violence conviction.

Sizemore failed seven drug tests, admitted methamphetamine use twice and failed to show up for further testing while on probation for a 2003 domestic violence conviction involving his ex-girlfriend, former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, a prosecutor has said.

Sizemore sobbed, gestured and begged for another chance as he delivered a rambling speech before being handed the first sentence Thursday by Superior Court Judge Antonio Barreto Jr.

He pleaded with the judge for leniency, saying he had broken his parents' hearts and felt like a 12-year-old child. Sizemore also said he was "engaged in a struggle right now to regain the better part of who I am. ... I never thought I had this disease."

"I assure your honor that I'm not acting now. I'm not acting, I'm begging, I'm beseeching you. I can't imagine my future without performing."

Outside court, he gave a high five and directed an obscene gesture at the press.

Sizemore, best known for his roles in "Saving Private Ryan" (1998) and "Black Hawk Down" (2001), was back in court later Thursday for sentencing on the felony conviction for methamphetamine possession.

Judge Paula Adele Mabrey ruled that he was eligible for a drug treatment program and ordered him to submit proof that he was enrolled by April 14.

A bachelor tried to take a vacation every summer. He was a golf nut and spent two weeks at Hilton Head. Last summer he met a woman out there and fell head over heels in love with her.

On the last night of his vacation, the two of them went to dinner and had a serious talk about how they would continue the relationship.

They agreed that total honesty was important so there would be "no surprises" later that would destroy their love.

"It's only fair to warn you, I'm a total golf nut," Ed said to his lady friend. "I eat, sleep and breathe golf, so if that's a problem, you'd better say so now."

"Well, if we're being honest with each other, here goes," she replied. "I'm a hooker."

"I see," Ed replied, and was quiet for a moment.

Then he added, "You know, it's probably because you're not keeping your wrists straight when you tee off."

Teacher Claims Shroud of Turin Is Fake

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Nathan Wilson is an English teacher with no scientific training, but he thinks he knows how the piece of linen revered by many as Jesus' burial cloth was made. And he thinks it's not a physical sign of the Resurrection.

In other words, in Wilson's estimation, the Shroud of Turin is a fake — produced with some glass, paint and old cloth. And that theory, especially with Easter this weekend, has so-called "Shroudies" abuzz.

"A lot of religious people are upset," said Wilson, 26, who teaches at New Saint Andrews College in Moscow, Idaho.

Wilson is himself an evangelical Christian but said his views on the shroud don't change his faith.

"I'm a Bible-believing Christian who believes in the Resurrection completely without a doubt," he said.

The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth, about 14 feet long and 3 feet wide, that has been kept in the city of Turin, Italy, since 1578. It bears the image of a man with wounds similar to those suffered by Jesus. Believers say it was used to wrap Christ after he was taken off the cross.

The English instructor believes a medieval forger could have painted the image of a crucified man on a pane of glass, laid it on the linen, then left it outside in the sun to bleach the cloth for several days. As the linen lightened, the painted image of the man remained dark on the cloth, creating the equivalent of a photo negative.

Wilson wrote his theory in Books and Culture, a magazine for Christian intellectuals. It was picked up by several Web sites and is being debated in shroud circles. Wilson's Web site received more than 100,000 hits from 45 countries in the first week of his article's publication.

Shroud expert Dan Porter said that while Wilson's theory is ingenious, it does not produce images identical to those on the shroud.

"It is not adequate to produce something that looks like the shroud in two or three ways," said Porter, who lives in Bronxville, N.Y. "One must produce an image that meets all of the criteria."

Porter contends sun bleaching cannot have produced the image, which he and many others say is the result of chemical reactions on the cloth.

"A problem with Wilson's hypothesis is that sun bleaching merely accelerates bleaching that will occur naturally as the material is exposed to light," Porter wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "Eventually, Wilson's sun bleach shroud image will fade into the background as exposure equalizes the bleaching."

The shroud has often been displayed, sometimes in bright sunlight for days at a time, and no such image fading has occurred, Porter said.

Porter and others also question whether panes of glass at least 6 feet long were produced in medieval times, as Wilson's theory would require.

Radiocarbon tests of the Shroud of Turin were done in 1988, and dated the cloth at A.D. 1260 to 1390 — seeming ruling it out as Jesus' burial cloth. But Raymond Rogers of Los Alamos National Laboratory recently argued that the tested threads came from later patches and might have been contaminated. Rogers calculated that the shroud is 1,300 to 3,000 years old and could easily date from Jesus' era.

Wilson said he wants to write a novel about his theory. The forger or perhaps forgers, Wilson theorizes, probably robbed a grave and pulled the aged shroud off a body, then crucified someone to obtain the blood and study the wounds of Jesus.

"Most likely it involved some real wicked people," Wilson said.

NIN plan unusual packaging

Nine Inch Nails is planning some unorthodox packaging for its new album, With Teeth, according to a posting on the band's official website by founder and frontman Trent Reznor. While not giving any clues of what the package will look like, Reznor wrote, "We're doing something that feels right to me but deviates from the norm. I have always thought the format of the CD effectively put an end to album artwork. (So) we designed something that feels in touch with how people experience music in 2005. We will be opening ourselves up for criticism here but I assure you when you see the big picture, it will all make sense."

With Teeth arrives in stores on May 3rd in both standard CD and DualDisc formats.

The DualDisc will include two separate mixes of the album -- one in DVD-Audio surround sound and one in Dolby 5.1 surround sound -- the video for the record's first single, "The Hand That Feeds," in-studio performance footage of three other new songs from the CD, a photo gallery and lyrics.

A limited edition vinyl version of the album will be released one week earlier, on 04.26.

Listening parties for With Teeth will take place in clubs in thirteen different cities, beginning tomorrow and ending on 04.02.

Nine Inch Nails begins a headlining North American theatre tour on 04.27 in San Francisco, with the trek wrapping up on 05.31 in San Diego. A larger fall trek is also in the works.

New Diet Pepsi Commercial

Yoda also stars in a new Diet Pepsi commercial called "Jedi Mind Trick." The spot is scheduled to begin airing in May and features the same award-winning special effects that ILM creates for Star Wars. Set in a diner, Yoda sits at the counter and uses the Force to try to get a Diet Pepsi to drink with his meal. A special appearance by the famous wookiee, Chewbacca, ends the spot with typical Pepsi humor. The commercial was created by BBDO New York.

Darth Dew Slurpee

Introduced last summer, Mountain Dew Pitch Black is the popular limited-edition soda that combines the great taste of Mountain Dew with a blast of black grape flavor. Darth Dew Slurpee is modeled after Mountain Dew Pitch Black and will be served in four different Episode III collectible 3-D cups with lids shaped like the head of Darth Vader.
