Idea of the Day

Whenever I hear of a person missing from my neighborhood, I start digging holes in my yard.

Nothing freaks out the cops more than fresh dig marks.

Megadeth News

Dave Mustaine will keep Megadeth alive for this summer's Gigantour and a couple of archival projects, but the band's future is up in the air after that. Mustaine originally planned Megadeth's 2004 album, The System Has Failed, as a solo outing, but used the band name for contractual reasons. Now, he told The Zone, he has to decide what to do next: "I still was convinced that this was gonna be the last Megadeth record. But, you know, after going out and touring and having these new, wonderful people I'm playing with and this whole new administration that I'm part of, it's just given me a huge, very uncomfortable question mark. Do I go out on top - because Megadeth certainly is at the top of its form right now - or do I throw the dice again?"

Mustaine says he'll make a decision after Gigantour, a traveling festival that kicks off 07.21 in Fresno, California. It also features Dream Theater, Fear Factory, and others.

Megadeth will release Greatest Hits: Back To The Start on 06.28 as both a CD and a CD/DVD set. A separate DVD, Arsenal Of Megadeth, will be released in the fall.

GM to Offer Employee Discount to Everyone

DETROIT - In an attempt to boost sluggish sales, General Motors Corp. said Wednesday it will offer the same discount it gives to its employees to anyone who buys a new GM car or truck in the next month.

The program includes all GM vehicles except the Chevrolet Corvette and GMC medium duty trucks, the world's largest automaker said. The offer runs June 1 to July 5.

"We want to bring the focus back to what drives our business: great cars and trucks," said Brent Dewar, GM North America's vice president of marketing and advertising. "This program gives everybody a chance to drive the vehicles we drive and pay the price we pay."

GM said the new price will be prominently displayed on vehicles at dealerships. Consumers can get additional incentives on top of the lower prices, said Paul Ballew, GM's executive director of global market and industry analysis.

Ballew said in some cases, consumers could get up to $7,000 or $8,000 off the standard retail price of the vehicle.

"Our challenge in the marketplace is breaking through with consumers," Ballew said. "It's vital for GM to break through the clutter. Our products are better than they are perceived."

Despite high marks in recent quality surveys, GM has had sluggish sales so far this year. The company, which posted a $1.1 billion loss in the first quarter, reported Wednesday that May sales fell 5.4 percent from the year-ago period, and that business so far this year is off 5.2 percent from a year ago.

A Velvet Revolver Soundtrack Song

The soundtrack to the upcoming movie The Fantastic Four, featuring a brand new song from Velvet Revolver, arrives in stores on 07.05. The Velvet Revolver track, titled "Come On Come In," was recorded by the band during off days on its recent U.S. tour. The album will also include the solo debut of former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody on a duet with pop singer Anastacia, called "Everything Burns," that's slated to be the collection's first single.

Also appearing on the soundtrack are Sum 41, Simple Plan, Breaking Point and others still to be announced.

Based on the long-running Marvel comic book, The Fantastic Four follows four astronauts who gain superpowers after being exposed to cosmic radiation. The movie, which hits theaters on July 8th, stars Jessica Alba as the Invisible Woman, Michael Chiklis as the Thing, Ioan Gruffudd as Mr. Fantastic and Chris Evans as the Human Torch.

Velvet Revolver starts a European tour tomorrow that will include a performance at the London Live 8 concert on 07.02. The band will return home for some headlining shows in mid-August and appear on the final eight dates of this summer's Ozzfest, beginning on 08.23.

This Stinks !!

Subway Ends Free-Sandwich Promotion

MILFORD, Conn. - The Subway restaurant chain said Thursday it is ending its decades-old free sandwich promotion, amid concerns that counterfeiters have been creating and selling copies of the restaurant's proof-of-purchase stamps and cards.

Subway, which operates more than 23,000 restaurants in 82 countries, joins a growing list of businesses — from pharmaceutical companies and cigarette manufacturers to recording studios and clothing designers — who say counterfeiters have hurt their bottom line.

Under the Sub Club promotion, which had run in some form since the 1980s, customers received a stamp for every six-inch sandwich they bought. A full card of eight stamps could be redeemed for a free sandwich.

But thousands of stamps are for sale at online auction sites and company officials said franchise owners were increasingly discovering counterfeit stamps.

"It's possible some of the stamps got by and we didn't even know," said company spokesman Kevin Kane. "It's possible we don't even know the extent of it."

Bud Miller, executive director of the Virginia-based Coupon Information Center, said coupon fraud exploded in 2003 as counterfeiters used high-quality printers and online auction sites to distribute millions of dollars in false coupons from companies across the country.

Grocers nationwide have struggled to spot fake coupons, which can be quite sophisticated or as simple as an altered expiration date. Some grocery stores have stopped accepting coupons printed from home after manufacturers refused to honor counterfeits.

Miller said the situation is improving because retailers are getting better at spotting counterfeits and federal agents are cracking down on sophisticated scams.

"Somebody doing one counterfeit is not going to bankrupt the system, but somebody doing thousands of these and e-mailing them out, that's where you get the problem."

In Missouri last year, FBI agents arrested a man who sold thousands of dollars worth of bogus Applebees gift certificates online. He received five months in prison.

The U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation last month that would strengthen anti-counterfeiting laws. The bill would require the destruction of equipment used to make counterfeit goods. Currently, pirated products are destroyed but the equipment is untouched, allowing more counterfeiting.

Subway is a privately held company, owned by Milford, Conn.-based Doctor's Associates Inc. Company sales in 2003 were $6.8 billion.

The company is designing a promotion to replace the Sub Club cards. Each Subway restaurant can set its own timeframe, but the promotion will be phased out companywide by Oct. 1, Kane said. He said the company had been considering whether the promotion was outdated for some time.

When company officials discovered rolls of stamps available online, Kane said, it sealed the promotion's fate.

"All that effort and you're getting free subs," Kane said. "It wasn't a cruise. It wasn't a trip to the Bahamas. You're getting free subs."

Bill DeCarlo, who was eating at a Subway in Newington on Thursday afternoon, says he fills up cards several times a year. But he says the decision to discontinue the stamps won't cause him to go elsewhere for lunch.

"It's their choice, it's their business," said DeCarlo, an accountant from New Haven. "It probably generates more business for them, but maybe not if they're getting rid of it."

'Hey! Isn't that Dad up on that billboard?'

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - People who solicit prostitutes in Oakland, California, could find their faces plastered on billboards under a new shaming program that one civil rights group calls bad public policy.

The city of 400,000 across the bay from San Francisco started putting up billboards on Wednesday showing men arrested for soliciting sex. Other signs invite prostitutes to quit by calling a help line.

"This idea came out of just thinking about new ideas, doing something to deal with this increasing problem, especially with the exploitation of underage women," said Oakland City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente, who champions the approach.

The photos on the billboards were partially blurred so the men are not easily identifiable. But in the future photos might be displayed unaltered, an aide to De La Fuente said.

Critics say the technique -- which De La Fuente said has been used in Texas -- recalls medieval public humiliations.

"It doesn't seem to us to be appropriate for Oakland to be using shaming as an additional and extrajudicial punishment to single out this group of offenders," said Alan Schlosser, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union for Northern California. "We don't think this is good public policy."

Some newspapers have long printed the names of those soliciting sex for money, and courts have backed punishments that include shaming. Last year a U.S. federal appeals court allowed a punishment in which a mail thief had to wear a signboard telling of his crime.

Not sure who is playing guitar for Whitesnake right now - I like their older stuff (late 80's) - with and without Vai.

Little Mary Margaret

Little Mary Margaret was not the best student in Catholic School. Usually she slept through the class. One day her teacher, a Nun, called on her while she was sleeping. "Tell me Mary Margaret, who created the universe?" When Mary Margaret didn't stir, little Johnny who was her friend sitting behind her, took his pencil and jabbed her in the rear. "God Almighty!" shouted Mary Margaret.

The Nun said, "Very good" and continued teaching her class. A little later the Nun asked Mary Margaret, "Who is our Lord and Savior?" but Mary didn't stir from her slumber.

Again, Johnny came to her rescue and stuck Mary Margaret in the butt. "Jesus Christ!!!" shouted Mary Margaret and the Nun once again said, "Very good," and Mary Margaret fell back sleep.

Then the Nun asked her a third question..."What did Eve say to Adam after she had her twenty-third child?"

Again, Johnny came to the rescue. This time Mary Margaret jumped up and shouted, "If you stick that damn thing in me one more time, I'll break it in half!"

The Nun fainted.

'I'm quitting...again.'

Just three days after announcing that he was quitting the band and less than a day after retracting that, Saliva guitarist Chris D'abaldo has now departed the group again. D'abaldo posted a statement at the band's official website late Wednesday night (06.01) in which he wrote, "I last said I would attempt to work things out with the band and would let you know how things went. After talking with members and management, I am now officially reporting that I am in fact gonna go my separate way. I wish all the remaining band members the best of luck and fortune. It was great while it lasted, and I hope they have success in the future."

The remaining members of the group issued their own message yesterday, in which they wrote, "The band wants to apologize about confusion that has been spread over the last couple days. Officially, due to creative differences, Saliva and Chris D'abaldo are parting ways. We wish him the best. The band, however, is completely moving forward as planned and have our best music ahead of us." The group added that it will tour this October and begin recording its fourth album in December.

The Memphis-based outfit also wrote that it's "excited" about singer Josey Scott's acting career, which may have been a factor in D'abaldo's exit. Wanted, a new TV series in which Scott plays a sex crimes investigator, will begin airing on TNT in July.
