SLS, you're gonna get evicted if you keep doing that

Ovation1, hehe, yeah I quite like sounding like Igor Belsky! OK I don't sound much like him - he's too good - but sometimes it sounds Belsky-ish!

No, I'm not related to Roger! I get asked that a lot tho, so don't worry about it! hehehe

Hill Groove For G3!
Crispin, you'll find with wah-wah that if you have your guitar pushing out with lots of high tone, and then you add even more with the pedal, you'll get that nasty sound. It's just EQ modulation. what guitar are you using, and with what kind of sound - clean/overdriven/distorted/heavily distorted? If find that if I use my Morley with my smash box (heavy distortion) it sounds bit thin.........bassless. However, if I use the Bluesbreaker (EJ-type overdrive tone) with the neck pickup, but with some high tone wound in on my Jem, the Wah sounds really sweet and keeps a good tone.

If you use it lots with the bridge pickup, try the neck instead. And alternative to what DCK said, I have my Wah at the front end of my floorboard, with everything else in the chain after it!

Kell, no it wasn't me who was getting the powerball, but it was me who posted my opinions on it cuz I tried one recently. I know what you mean about there being loads of great amps to choose from.........it's quite a recent thing, but all of a sudden there's a lot of seriously good valve-heads to argue between. And they all have a similar Mesa-Boogie-type price tag of ~ "you're having a laugh aren't you? you can't afford this. you can't warrant spending this much on an amp. Can you?" ~ and then you buy one. hehe
mick87, And as for urinal cakes... I find them amusing. I think I should create a sport were dudes race to try and get them to erode the quickest!.........HAHAHAHAHAHA! that is too funny. that can debut at the greek olympics next year, right after the pick-tossing ~ I guess Yngwie would win that one, right? hell, with the amount that he aparrently drinks, he'd probably win the Urinal-Cake-Eroding contest as well!

Flight Of The Bumble Bee? ouch! Do you know if there's anybody out there with a signature Glockenspiel?

Crispin, what the others said! hehe. yeah Joe and Steve are excellent at palming the open strings while they tap. also, if youre using a Bad Horsie wah pedal and you hold it in the right place (somewhere around the middle) it seems to pick out the notes you're tapping and eliminate the ones you're not.

The other option is to do what Jenniffer Batten does which is to use a string damper.....it clamps on the neck behind the nut and you just flip it down when you're gonna start tapping. Or if you want to save money, you could use the sock trick! hehe. but that looks pretty pants on stage.

Try turning your tone down when you're using the wah pedal........full is probably not a good idea.

Ovation1, YEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! Or I could throw a proverbial cat among the proverbial pigeons, and shout HELL YEAH! Oh yeah, nobody likes Metallica round here. my bad

The PGM has 25 frets? crazy, I never knew that.

Mick87, it's gotta be the gold. A gold plated Glock would be the dogs bollocks. You could use loads of crazy, really expensive materials, like Carbon Fiber, and Wallnut. And it'd be great, cuz you'd never have to pay for it cuz it'd be made for you, but all your adoring fans, your "Mick87-ists", if you will, will have to go out and spend thousands so they can have a Glock like yours. What will you call it, and which Glockenspiel manufacturer would you wish to endorse? hehe
The Forgotten (Part 2) For G3!
Jonny aimless, that is a tight-ass review man! Cheers for showing us...........what a bunch of b*st*rds.
Clarky, hehehehehehe, that's damn funny. At the moment it seems that the shite with which T2J is to be filled, has nothing to do with you. Dammit Clarky, Karloff and SLS have stolen your glory! go get 'em! hehe

oh, excellent response to the palm beach review, by the way! good going

Hill Groove For G3!
Acoustic shredding - there's an interesting one. I should think Joe can. Steve can - he does so on the '7th Song' record, on 'Melissas Garden'.

I wonder if Pablo Gilberto ever bothers?! hehe. that'd be pretty nuts!

Ovation1, I feel ashamed, I forgot about Brandos Costumes (Gentle Ways). Lord forgive me. that is a kickass tune, I love it. And dude, that rocks about Paul doing loads of acoustic stuff lately......I gotta hear that! What's the best Racer X album, in your opinion?

mikesb, I haven't invested in any of PG's solo career work yet.....what do you recommend? Burning organ seems to get good reviews. I'll probably start working on my Gilbert collection next year - I have one Mr Big and two Racer X records, but I'm 6 discs and one DVD into my Dream Theater archive, so i'll probably continue with that one first.
The Forgotten (Part 2) For G3!
Clarky, hehe, next time I'm in Berkshire I'll buy you a drink, to put towards your wastedness, then Ican honestly say that I helped you in your mission to pepper T2J with shite-isms! hehehe

Happy 800!

The Prez, check out 'GHS 3' - that was Stu, Frank Gambale and....er....someone else.......oh yeah, Stu Clone! hehe. okay I don't remember who the third one was.

Yeah I reckon a tour of Billy and Stu would be great......they could vary their third member........it would be ace with Jaco Pastorias, or Roscoe Beck, John Myung..........that would rule!

Dash427, it could have been a previous band, or it could have been any of the second guitarists.....Tony, Galen, it could be anyone.
Austin, yeah that's a fair point - Joe isn't going to be bothered by one bad review.

still, I bet he's never been treated as poorly as Vai was - did you ever read the bit in one of Steve's postcards, saying that one magazine journalist said that steve's parents should have been sterilised so he could never have been born?! That is some sick, crazy sh!t man.

I hope that journalist got/gets caught up in one of LA's finest drive-by's. That's the sort of thing that is wrong to say about anybody, regardless of who they are.

How ace is "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding"? I'm in a real Dream Theater mood lately, these guys rock.

UF Dean, you can find Dream Theater's "Funeral For A Friend" on the "A Change Of Seasons" album. oh, I just discovered that Greg gave you a much better review, so....what Stu M said! hehe

Mikesb, yeah that Paul Gilbert introduction helped lots! thanks dude. I've been wondering about the "Raw Blues Power" record with Jimmy Kidd for a while - I'll start with that first. I have Racer X's "Technical Difficulties" and "Second Heat". I like TD a lot, but Second Heat is a little too dated for my taste. However, I'll eventually be getting all of the older stuff too - that's what a collection is all about! Cheers
The Forgotten (Part 2) For G3!
Austin, I thought I remembered hearing that Jaco had been killed quite some time ago. but beaten to death outside a club? that is completely f*ck*d up. do you reckon you could further enlighten me? I'd be interested to know if there is any reason for such a sad thing to happen.

Respect to Jaco Pastorias

Yeah, if you look at Vai's 'Postcards' section on his site, you'll see it there. it was earlier this year some time.

Debbie, cool photos! cheers for that, looks like a good show!
Narface, yeah I'd like to see Phillip Bynoe getting out into his own musical world too.......he's cool, but we don't hear him enough!
Farting Gnome, yeah I noticed that Steve had a fan blowing on his face when I saw him - I guess he likes to keep his hair out his eyes, and it keeps him cool - those lights get mighty hot!
Johnny Aimless, Outbound Rocks man! I love that album, especially "A Better World".
The Prez, suggestions on playing Steve-style? ouch, that's a tricky one. A lot of that weird tapping stuff comes out of playing a sweep, then adding tapped notes on the last two strings. Do you have the Alien Love Secrets video/DVD? if not, get it, if you do, watch 'Juice'....that'll give you a pretty clear idea of what he's up to, and it'll make you want to quite playing. The man's a monster.
Ovation1, thanks for your Paul Gilbert input! So to start, I wanna be checking out King Of Clubs and Raw Blues Power. sounds like a good start to me!
Hill Groove For G3!
So guys, after I finish spending another couple of hundred quid collecting Paul Gilbert and Dream Theater, what can you suggest about Ritchie Kotzen? I gather he is a pretty sound dude? Dammit, I gotta get a full collection of Andy Timmons too! aaahhh!
UF Dean, Ben and Jerry's is the dog's bollocks! you won't find a better-tasting ice cream! hell, B&J should pay me to do this sh*t! hehe
Austin, even better! Phish Food rocks, it's my favourite! hehehe, good call bro'
DCK, happy birthday!
Yoda, Jenniffer Batten masterclass will rock hard! she is damn good, and she'll be a cracking teacher. Enjoy it man
Everybody contribute suggestions as to what Mick87's signature glock should be called! hehehe. Happy 400 mick!
Ibanez Guitarist, Opposites Attract (Part 1) is so good! I love that whole album - Wipeout 2000 and Opposites Attract (2) are also mind-blowingly ace!

Austin, thanks for the info on Jaco Pastorius dude! That's harsh about the way he died, and a shame that he got himself into trouble with drink and drugs. The biography is real interesting.......seems like he was a properly cool guy.

The Prez, yeah the JS100 is cool. the bridge is great, and the neck is lovely. I agree that the pickups are okay, but I would definitely change them for DiMarzio's. Either go for what Joe's got (a PAF Pro and a Fred) or go for a pair of Evolutions. Or, go for a PAF Pro in the neck and an Evo in the bridge! Super-sly.
The Forgotten (Part 2) For G3!
Jelly Stew, where di you hear about Joe helping out Jordan on his new record? That is totally awesome news! What a fantastic collaboration! Do you have Jordan's "Feeding The Wheel"? I don't, but i'm more than interested.......Jordan Rudess is ace.
PhryDom, thanks for the Jaco stuff man! the thing like you said about his eye being "ruptured and dislodged from it's socket" is so harsh.

4 months and a five grand payment isn't enough I'm afraid. The bouncer that mamed and slaughtered Jaco Pastorius needs to be sought out and wrecked. See how he likes it when his eye is hanging in the same pool of his own blood that his face is laying in.

Hill Groove For G3!
mick87, a Joe and Steve collaboration fora record - that would kick too much ass! hehe, I surely hope that happens some time
Ovation1, thanks for the Paul Gilbert info. I'm quite into bluesy stuff too - I really like Eric Sardinas and Kenny-Wayne Shepherd, among others, so I may like Raw Blues Power too!
user1, yeah Joe uses the whammy still, and a pair of DS1's. How come you want your rig to be as close to Joe's as possible? He uses a custom Peavy XXX head, but you'll have to wait a while until you can lay your hands on that. probably about a year or so, I reckon. You should stick with your own rig, with your own tone.
amddata, procedure for recording as a hobby? just hit the record button! hehe, seriously tho, If you have no intention of selling your recording, or publically performing it, Joe and his fellow musicians really aren't bothered. If you want to make it public/market it you do have to ask, and then just credit it to the original artists name.

Covering someone elses stuff usually isn't too much of a problem if you give them the credit for it.

michelle, good to hear that little Stewart is getting on ok! hehe. cats are so much fun. My cat got attacked by someone elses cat last night. she's not very happy - she's limping, and has a hole in her chin and in the top of her head. If I see that bastard cat that beat up my little moggy, I'll.......throw a rat at it! hehe, I wouldn't be able to do anything cruel, but I'll give it a good telling off!
mikesb, I've heard Walter Trout's cover of "Red House" pretty cool, very Gary More, in a way. I don't like Gary's vocal style much........he trills too much. I preferred Walter Trout's Sound, and I have heard of Bloodline. Thanks for the recommendations dude!

Oh, have you ever heard the "Tribute To Stevie Ray Vaughan" record? it's awesome.....it's got so many cool people on it, like Eric Clapton, Bonnie Rate, Jimmie Vaughan, Dr John, BB King, Robert Cray and so on. worth checking out!

I hope none of you people ever use things like kazaa? I was at a very interesting lecture yesterday about the music industry, what it's worth, and how royally it has been f*ck*d by the internet! Did you know that the global music industry is worth 36 billion US dollars? I think that worked out at about 32 billion Euros.

It's value is dropping fast, and at the current rate, with people downloading/pirating music and not going out and buying it, music will go out of production in about a decade.

I feel good that I spend so much on music ~ and I hope you lot all feel happy to help keep the industry alive too!

Ethn, wow, that's the bravest statement I've seen yet about Yngwie! respect dude! hehehe. Half the audience could shred his ass? it'd be quite interesting to know how good the audience members actually are. I do kind of have to agree with PhryDom, about the fact that G3 should be more about the entertainment/music, than who's best.

However, I do think that it sucks for a G3 member to be so sloppy, in their playing and their habits.

NINJAS for G3? I bet they could kick even hgiher than YJM! hehe

The Forgotten (Part 2) For G3!
PhryDom, hehehehe, no, none of my family never featured on film, except me earlier this year, at a local gig I played in, but it was sh!t, and the film crew didn't know what they were doing. It's the worst video I've seen.....actually, I saw a video taken of my first gig, on a digital handheld video camera, and it's better in sound and picture quality, than the previously mentioned recording, that used 17 million pounds worth of TV Studio truck, cameras, sound equipment, mixers, the whole nine yards!

I know, I'm not a violent person and yeah, what's done is done, but I think what happened to Jaco is really unjustified.

mmm, Kazaa hurts more than you think. I think it was something like a 2 billion dollar loss in the last 12 months.

Yoda, dude how was that Jenniffer Batten masterclass today? I bet she was awesome? Hope you enjoyed it and learned some cool stuff.
that's an awesome article about what Robert Fripp had to say about Joe! what a nice bloke! And how true.......I'd be really interested to hear some of Joe's hidden talents!
Stu M, happy 900
Hill Groove For G3!
Steevlan, very interesting to see what you wrote about Robin Trower, thanks for your positive input! Myself and a mate of mine may be writing up a survey/questionnaire to take out and inflict on the public some time soon, to find out their awareness of how hard file sharing and music downloading is f*ck*ng the music industry.

RT can't even afford to do a festival tour? that's a pretty good indicator of how bad file sharing is. Cheers again dude, your post may turn out to be very helpful!

stefan, "ask him if you don't believe me" hehehehehe. that's real funny. We all know that Vai has been to Romania cuz it says so in his Alive In An Ultra World album. IF anybody is going to be fully aware of this, it's likely to be Joe!
The Matrix Revolutions sounds awesome. I gotta go see that!
Please, more people share thoughts and any weblinks you know of, that have to do with file sharing and free music downloads/pirating. I want a good bunch of opinions so I know how to better-structure my research.

Joe, I'd be very interested to know what you think about file-sharing, and what the availability of free, copied music via the internet has done for the music industry. In your field, do you ever feel any of the effects of this obviously huge problem, and do you think that the business is helped out by "artist-friendly" organisations like Favored Nations?

The Forgoten (Part 2) For G3!
mikesb, thanks for relaying Joe's comment on tutorial videos! Very interesting indeed. And I can see both sides on this matter - a video and a concert ticket cost roughly the same (unless it's a G3 concert ticket! hehe) and some videos can be dead usefull, like Paul Gilbert's ones, but usually it's just a few particular parts that are any use; an expensive way of picking up nuggets of good info. Yeah, he's obviously right about getting a good teacher, but how much do they cost? lots!

speaking of which, I need to start taking lessons.

Ovation1/JS clone 1, I hear that vote for Paul Gilbert on a whole G3 tour! he would kick ass on tour with Steve and Joe, he'd fit in so well, and be so much fun!
Johnny Aimless, Ibanez sponsorship on an all-Ibanez G3 could be usefull! It's an interesting point. Ibanez did put on an anniversary show that featured Joe, Steve, Paul, and I believe Andy Timmons and Jon Petrucci as well, before Jon moved to Ernie Ball/Music-Man.
Hill Groove
Matt Martinez, yeah leeching is filesharing. If someone is getting music without paying for it, even when they're meant to be paying, they are both committing a crime, and committing proverbial buggery against the industry!
Sugarplum, my favourite Satch tunes? "The Forgotten (part 2)", "Hill Groove", "House Full OF Bullets" and "Flying In A Blue Dream"
Ethn, I'm glad to see your feeling on The Matrix Revolutions are similar to mine. They call that a conclusion? Hardly any of it took part actually in The Matrix, Neo went blind, then went superhuman in the real world, and a key character died......what else could they have f*ck*d up? Oh, and ending it with a 'truce'? what's that about? I think they really screwed it up when they decided to give Neo his all-powerful abilities in part 2. it meant there was no way to make it interesting in part 3.
PhryDom, thanks for that shout out to Brandoni on their £50 licensed trems! Are they as good as a decent Ibanez one? Just wondering, cuz I'm gonna have to put a new bridge in my Jem and RG some day.
Ovation1, it was me who asked about what a good Racer X album is to check out. Technical Difficulties is one I have, and I know exactly what you mean! After "Technical Difficulties" I start to feel slightly sick, wondering if I've spent 4 grand on the wrong profession. After "B.R.O.", I sit and cry. Paul Gilbert rocks, and has the same effect on me as the Alien Love Secrets video! oh, and the LISF and G3 DVDs. But I love 'em all, it's inspiring really. If I can ever get my synch-picking as sorted as Pablo has, I'll be rich. hehehe. laters dude
Mr Nick, which CD did you get signed? was it Tribal Rage? I got that one signed earlier in the year at Wembly, she rocks!
Surferdave, hehe, interesting point about needing an interesting surname to be a good player. Add "Belsky" and "Petrucci" to your list. However, I think Johnson is aa amazing playerm but he has a normal name.
JS Clone 1, you asked Joe what he thought of YJM's performance during the jam? hahahaha, respect! What was his response? And what did he have to share about cars?

Sharif, have you heard the "Lords Of Karma: A Tribute To Steve Vai and Joe Satriani" CD? check out George Lynch's contribution to that. it aint bad, but nothing on that record is excellent. just good. Not that I'm saying Lynch isn't good - he's bloody amazing! He could make an interesting G3 member.

The Forgotten (Part 2) For G3!
Clarky, about Ibanez bridges, give 'em a few years to iron out the problems and the ZR pivot trem is going to be pretty awesome, I reckon. It's a great idea (I can't believe it's taken this long!) and the design is dead posh.

Yeah I know what you mean about those loose trem arms. That really pisses me off. The locking, threadless ones have bushes that last until you get it out the shop door, then you need to go back in and buy more. And the TRS threads are kinda shite. Any trem use and it works loose. I think they need a smaller guage thread on 'em. I too like the arm to stay where I leave it, as part of my playing, and having the bastard thing making it's own arrangements doesn't help at all.

Can anybody tell me what's happened to David Lee Roth? He isn't dead as well is he? I hope not. Anyway, I've been listening to "Eat 'Em And Smile" a lot lately - what a cracking record! He has an awesome singing voice that suits the various styles on the record, and what an amazing cover of "That's Life". "I'm Easy" has gotta be my favourite tho
Hill Groove For G3!
I was suprised, when I was reading the liner notes to "Archives Vol. 3: Mystery Tracks" today, to learn that Mika Porcaro played bass for Steve on "Wipeout 2000". pretty cool, methinks. Speaking of Mike Porcaro, Ovation1, have you got that Toto DVD yet?! hehehe.

The Forogtten (Part 2) For G3!
Sharif, have you come across that Toyota Tacoma Hillclimb? It has to be the most schizo car I've seen. It climbed the hill at the Goodwood Festival Of Speed this year, and it's driver had a hard time contorlling it every time he changed gear, it's that powerful!
I'm with sugarbear and surferdave on this one, if you write music purely by theory, your kinda turning it from music into maths. And thats not art. Music should be expressive
dave wren, Joe, Steve and Yngwie won't be over here early next year. I was wondering if there was anybody who actually owned one of those BC Rich guitars with the ass on. now I know.
Jelly Stew, good to hear your review of "Train Of Thought". I'd completely forgotten it was out already! I gotta get me a copy of that, think I'll order it soon.
Hill groove For G3!
Anuj, Billy Sheehan is an excellent example of someone who has no theory training but is a GODLIKE player, well done! I'd forgotten that detail....he is damn good.
Petrucci made a guest appearance with G3? madness! That must have kicked so much ass, seeing JP joining JS in a quick rendition of Summer Song!
Clarky, did you say you put electrical tape over the bushes on your edge trem arm? and that's what makes it stay-put? An intigueing technique, I must say.
Stu Clone, that's righteous bro', all the way.

mischievous, stealing my thing? not at all bro'! I'm always glad to see supporters of the Hill Groove For G3! campaign. I'm pleased I helped your re-discovery of an amazing Satch future-classic! Hill Groove is such an uplifting, happy melody, it really sticks out on that album, and the whole album is fantastic, so for something to stick out is pretty awesome!

Go check out The Forgoten on the FIABD album, and maybe I'll soon have you adding The Forgotten (Part 2) For G3! to your posts too! hehehe.

Fused, I hate those weeks where you can't play something that interests you! Are you pre-occupied with something? I can't work out what causes it......I wonder if the likes of Mr Satriani ever have weeks like that?!
Got DLR's "Skyscraper" album this morning, and am just listening to it now for the first time - pretty good. Is that Yosemite Valley on the front cover?
Michelle, happy 900
PhryDom, yeah I can understand the writing-by-framework point of view, and that's probably the approach that I mostly take.
Adrianorb, that link to the Bad Mother F****r wallet is awesome. I actually want one! hehe, cheers for that dude
Austin, I take it DLR's stuff with Eddie was pretty cool then? I got "Eat 'Em And Smile" and "Skyscraper" as part of my Vai collection.........I'll eventually have to do the same with Frank Zappa stuff (expensive!). Then when I finish collecting Paul Gilbert, Andy Timmons and Dream Theater, maybe I can start on an EVH collection, and get some more DLR stuff! hehe, I hate having this obssessive compulsion to get everything by an artist I like!
Does anybody know what pickups Mr Timmons uses? Oh, and does anybody remember what Nuno's bridge pickup is?
Jake 49ers, yeah It's ok to like someones music and not like them as a person. I agree with you about Jimmi - I don't have much respect for people who are drugged up all the time. That's why I have so much respect for Joe, Steve, EJ, Nuno.......all the amazing players I like. That said, I have to feel some respect for Jimmi, cuz he wrote some amazing bits of music, and played his guitar upside down!

Oh, and regards Halo, you need to find you some money. I don't play games much, but it's gotta be right up against GTA3 and Half-Life (actually it's better than Half-Life) as the best game ever written. I thoroughly recommend Halo, so much effort was put into it's production, and it has an awesome storyline.

Sharif, I totally know what you mean on the power thing. It's easy to have too much. Lotec Sirius - 1200 BHP. Why? Bugatti 16/4 Veyron - 1000+ BHP. Why? I have much more respect for people who moderate power and weight, cuz it's those people who are real engineers. That said, the Tacoma Hillclimb is a pretty amazing vehicle! hehe, I've never seen anything look like such a deathtrap to drive.

"it's like buying a 36 hour clock lol!" hehehehehe, that's damn good man! I'll have to use thatin future!

I still say Nuno Bettencourt for G3! I'd love to see him in a big show like this, he's such a dude, but his band music these days might not fit so well with a whole G3 show.
Austin, happy 1-and-a-half thousand. where in hell did all those come from? Hehehe, I assume you're a member of Post-aholic's Anonymous?!

I apologise sincerely for my boldness! Due to a typing error (forgetting the bloody 'b' in the closing brackets) in my last post (2 days ago), the whole thing came out in Bold. I'm sorry guys, I didn't mean to shout! hehehehe.

It's all amended now!

Manuel, no Nuno sounds like himself. He has his own style, and is a talented musician, rather than just a great guitarist. No, his current stuff is band/song orintated, rather than instrumental. He made two records to date with his band "Mourning Widows". I guess it is kinda like modernised "Extreme". Kinda funky, some fat, chunky rhythm playing with technical layering and some sweet bass and drum parts. He also sings lead vocals, and slots in some varied solos which always sound great.
TASTEY, see above! hehe. I love Nuno too, I think he is the coolest dude, a wikid player, has a fantastic voice, and writes kick-ass tunes. I'm so envious that you got to see him play!! Have a look on the net and see if you can find the two "Mourning Widows" records. The first one is self-titled, and the second is called "Furnished Souls For Rent". They are Japanese-release-only so they'll cost a few nickles-and-dimes, but worth every cent! have a look on amazon.

Nuno has shorter hair these days, which is kinda nuts.....he looked cool with long hair! He really should have an official website, dammit!

The Forgotten (Part 2) For G3!
Jared, that's a lot of effort you put into your list there! that's a cool thing to share, cheers dude. Eric Johnson in the top five, right-on! I don't think I can come up with a list that long but I can give a shorter one: not sure about the order at the moment but top-ten guitarists ~ 1. Steve Vai, 2. Joe Satriani, 3. John Petrucci, 4. Igor Belsky, 5. Paul Gilbert, 6. Andy Timmons, 7. Nuno Bettencourt, 8. Eric Johnson, 9. Jenniffer Batten, 10. Yngwie Malmsteen

However, my top-ten musicians would be a little different; these are the people who make guitar-based music something really interesting ~ 1. Eric Johnson, *3. Steve Vai/Joe Satriani, 4. Igor Belsky, 5. Nuno Bettencourt, 6. Andy Timmons, 7. Steve Lukather, 8. Kenny-Wayne Shepherd, 9. John Petrucci, 10. Paul Gilbert

*I left out number 2 cuz Vai and Satriani share a place but are two people!

mischievous, yeah you can call me Simon if you like! Yeah I did kinda miss out a 'b' didn't I?! hehe, it's all amended now! sorry about that
Fused9, yeah if you have something on your mind it'll tend to take away your enthusiasm for playing. Right after my dad died I couldn't pick up a guitar for 3 days, cuz I just felt restless and couldn't keep my concentration. Hope everything is ok anyway dude. When in january are you 15? im 20 on the third!
Fretslayer, Back To Shalla-Bal is, indeed, a smoking Satch Epic. That, The Forgotten and The Bells Of Lal are some of his most important creations, in my opinion. Initially, I thought The Bells Of Lal sounded kinda free-form, but god was I wrong! It's so nicely structured. And I agree with your 'standout stuff' selection from the SBM record, tho I would add Starry Night on there!
Lyz, damn right! Buying your own sheet music and recordings is the way it should be. If something is given up for free, I'll welcome it. If something is put up for sale, I would expect to pay for it. Nice to read your good opinions on downloading music. Pirates are baaad, mmmkay!

Also interesting to see your opinions on drugs/alcohol. I was disappointed too when I found out that Kirk had had a coke habbit. It's great to see that people like him and Hetfield and Lukather can go through rehab and make it work......but still...!

Hill Groove For G3!
A post from Joe! yay, and he said "So many notes, so little time".....suppose that has anything to do with the last track on Gregg Bissonette's "Submarine" album? hehehe, I doubt it, but hey, funniew things have happened.
Does anybody know where I can find that picture of Paul Gilbert and Nuno Bettencourt with his funny-lookin guitar? hehe
happy 400 Plum Loco!
happy 600 Crispin
happy 1500 Do The Stu

Anyone else checked out www.ibanez-guitar-players.com?

Ovation1, I'm listening to Extreme right now too! Where can I grab that video of Nuno? I want it! Nuno stuff is hard to find! That applies to pictures too - I need some images for my very busy wall! Ooh, speakin of which, my Venus Isle print shipped from Max Crace's studio on Wednesday.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!

The Prez, I'm a die-hard Vai-ist and I say no, "So Happy" was worse! When I Was A Little Boy is kinda funny, especially with all the noises.
Chris Peters, I hear ya, about people idly dismissing true audio-artwork as 'finger-wiggling crap'. It irritates me to the bone.

So Surfing With The Alien had some shred in it, as did Crushing Day, but why can't these mindless bastards listen to things like Always With Me, Always With You and appreciate it for what it really is?! Joe writes proper music, he structures it with thought, care and emotion, and isn't a mindless shredder. He's hardly a shredder at all actually - he's a legato man, not a pick-every-note man. What does it take for people to see the difference?

Nuno Bettencourt for G3! hehe, sorry, I know it's only just finished, but I wanna see this guy play!

Austin, yeah I thought that quote was pretty good too man! Joe's approach to improving your playing is quite interesting, and really cool, I think.

The Forgotten (Part 2) For Live Performance!
Mischievous, I won't let it happen again, I promise! hehehehe. "Who's Nuno?" I hear you ask. Well, Nuno Bettencourt played with the band "Extreme" in the 80's. Their stuff was kinda funk-metal, and would sound dated to someone now if they didn't want to listen. But it's really technical stuff. All 4 band members are as important as each other, tho Nuno did a lot of other things apart from play amazing guitar parts. His rhythm playing is really sweet, and he plays some amazing solos, with some killer shred in there too.

If you want to check out Nuno's stuff, best get either Extreme II: Pornograffitti of Extreme III: III Sides To Every Story, or get the self-titled Mourning Widows album. Mourning Widows is still kinda funk metal, but modernised, and Nuno does most of the production as well.

Why not use the chat room? umm, I wanted to watch a funny show on TV before I crawled into bed, I'm usually completey tired out by about half nine at night! It kinda sucks!

Yeah, that ibanez-guitar-players quote about Steve is pretty cool! hehe

Steevlan1, good man, telling us to buy, not download, Santamental! I wanna see more people buying their music! Thanks for the 'heads-up' on that, I didn't know about the record. Will have to get it, sounds awesome.

On the subject of Gibsons with Floyd Rose bridges on........funniest thing I ever saw was a 335 with a Floyd!

Hill Groove For Live Performance!
Anuj, yeah I'll take back what I said about So Happy, it is pretty smart! I think we should quit talking about Vai's worst song now! It's not very nice! hehe

mischievous, yes Extreme as in More Than Words. Is that the only thing of theirs you heard? if so, a lot theie other stuff is a little different. I would imagine you may have heard Decadance Dance and maybe Get The Funk Out too?

Anyhow, yeah, there were four of 'em, with Gary Cherone singing lead vocals, Pat Badger playing bass, Paul Geary playing drums, and Nuno playing guitars/keyboards/some brass/some strings, and just about everything else that was added in there! Although for some of the brass/strings sections he just arranged it for others to play.

Oh, by the way, I meant to say - my bad on calling you bro'! Hehehe, sorry about that. That's partly why I added my name to my public profile, cuz "962" isn't gender-specific!

That's quite interesting what Jordan Rudes had to say about the show he saw!
juju, awww, that's a pretty nasty story! All that money spent just for a paper, kinda sucks!
Great, this JP and JS mp3 is gonna take me an hour to download. It'd better be bloody good! hehe

edit: having finished downloading it I can say......mm.....if your connection is slow like mine it's not worth the effort. You can't properly hear Jon's part, and the sound quality isn't good, which is okay, cuz it is a 'bootleg', but that aspect could be made more obvious.

Must have been cool to see, can't wait to see the new G3 DVD, to see if Yngwie came up with anything as well-structured as Jon did!

Narface, no, David Dickinson is an ORANGE FREAK! Now, I doubt if that will mean anything at all to you, but anybody else here who's from the UK, may know what I'm talkin about! hehehehe.

G3 2CD set? kick-ass! That's gonna rule, and also means the DVD is going to be longer than the first G3 one! Yay!
actually, speaking of Orange Freaks, I've been drinking the O-J like it's going out of fashion lately! A big warm friendly "hello" from a fellow-orange-freak!
Sam, those dates sound more like a solo tour, but definitely not G3.
SteevLan1, dude, thanks for your comments on the Santamental record! And I'm most pleased to read that you went out and bought it! Good man!
TASTEY, yeah, damn right about Nuno. It's a real shame he gets so little attention. I'm not sure what's the cause of it all, but I think it's partly cause he's just plain pissed off. "Extreme" went global overnight, very-much against all their expectations, so how could he have moved on from there? He couldnt, I think partly cause Extreme was 'fun' music, and he would not be followed onward if he turned to a serious musician.

But he did try serious, or at least more sophisticated, which isn't what people wanted - they wanted more metal. I actually think Nuno's Mourning Widows work is far better than that of Extreme, but it's different, and I love everything he did with Extreme. MW is amazingly good to listen to, and I sincerely hope it hasn't been terminated after 2 albums.

Oh, he also needs to be signed by a bigger label, so he can get some exposure!

The Prez, yeah the Silver Surfer was drawn for the Silver Surfer before it was for Surfing With The Alien. Screaming pinch harmonics are different cuz you effectively double up the harmonic. You play a harmonic of a harmonic! Who needs a digitech whammy?
Crushingday, yeah I was at the gig and also want the DVD! hehe. Live At The Astoria is up for pre-order on amazon.co.uk with release on december 8th. IF it changes it changes, but Ive pre-ordered anyway. Whether it comes out tonight or some time next year, Ill stll buy it!
Nuno Bettencourt for G3! actually, Nuno Bettencourt for some sort of success like he deserves!

hehehe, Narface, and anyone else who's confused about my Orange comment - David Dickinson hosts a crappy day-time TV show here in the UK, and is famed for his bright orange fake-sun-tan that he always wears. So yeah, he's an Orange Freak! hehe

Mm, just Got Train Of Thought. It rocks, and I've only heard 2 and a half minutes of it so far!
juju, no pulp for me.........I like my O-J nice and smooth, unsweetened, preferrably fresh, with 40-or-so mml of Malibu mixed with it for good measure. But that's just in the evening - I couldn't handle Rum and Orange with my bagel at breakfast!!

pulp-1; no pulp-2

Ga60, Cliffs Of Dover is damn good dude! I had to stream it on Real Audio cuz of my poor connection, but it sounds sweet. The intro-2nd intro is interesting - I'd guess you did in two parts? Yeah, very good cover, I have utmost respect for you! Your Tone is pretty damn good too.......did you use a Strat?
"The Infinite Steve Vai an anthology" has the most half-assed cover I've seen! Every one of Steve's records has a cool cover, even the photographic art of Alive In An Ultra World, then this just gets an ancient photo of him with his shirt off? And what does that tell us?

Speaking of artwork, how awesome is the artwork in Train Of Thought?

Quito, Vai says he didn't sing anything on S&R, which is why "Love Blood" was left off the record.
The Live At The Astoria DVD looks f*ck*n awesome! YEAH! I can't wait, 3.5 hours of stuff to watch through, this is going to be so cool (it'd better be anyway! hehe).

miiiiiikey, wow, cheers for your input. That's a real suprise, I always thought Steve had done nothing lead-vocal-wise on S&R! You learn something new every day!

Crispin, scalloped frets are meant to make the strings' tone and sustain better when you bend them, although I'm not entirely sure whether it's any use on the lower, wdier-spaced frets. I've played a fully-scalloped Strat and it was in now way better. Actually, it was worse. I think it's good on the top 5 or 6 where they are really closely spaced, and notes don't sustain so well.
JS JS, in House Full Of Bullets I believe he's finger-picking! Nothing fancy, just playing some notes in unison, or at least that's what it looks like!

You can get Joe Satriani lyrics from Joe Satriani CD liners. If you don't have the CD liners it means you have a hot copy of his stuff, or you downloaded it.

Fused9, what do you want Jem parts for? and which parts? If it's stuff like bridge, nut, machineheads, then you can get it easily. Schaller make bloody good hardware.
Stu Clone, "All About Eve". damn right man! Steve's got a great voice, especially for his style of music....."Brother" and "Alive In An Ultra World".....sweet!
Austin, well done for posting the link to the photo of you with Joe.......now I know who to look out for when I come to LA in February! hehehe.
fadehienshu, thats a couple of good questions, the best I've seen in a while. I'd be really interested to know which one Joe spent the longest writing, or had the most trouble with.
both parts of "The Power Cosmic" and, of course, "Champagne?"

dammit! bad news really gets on my tits! We now have to wait till JANUARY for the Live At The Astoria DVD. In the time this is taking, Vai could have recorded a whole new DVD and released it.

Also, both the Satch and Vai anthology releases are not being released normally in the UK - we have to get them on import, which translates as around $32 each. What happened to international relations?

2 Ton, is there anybody who sympathises with Jackson? he's a complete freak!

and thank you, it's great to finally see someone write that The Forgotten (Parts 1 and 2) are their favourite tracks of the FIABD album! damn right dude, The Forgotten (Part 2) is my favourite tune by Joe.

Christina Aguilera isn't fit! god no. her music sucks too
The Prez, favourite Dream Theater record? Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence wins it hands-down. It's really nice, and has so much to it. I find it a little hard to remember the other albums individually, and I get confused as to what tracks are on what albums, but Six Degrees is really memorable, and different. I love it.
TASTEY, it's set to pacific time (california time).

TASTEY, the expression "Gets on my tits" does mean the same as "gets on my nerves" or "gets my goat"! I think it's a cracking expression tho, always makes me laugh!
Ethn, that Michael Jackson joke is sick....but that doesn't mean I'm not laughing uncontrollably! hahahahaha
Michelle, I'm with you on the "who gives a flying f*ck about Michael Jackson?" thing. I can't believe it makes headline news that the world's number-1 kiddy-fiddler has been arrested, when there's buildings being blown to pieces and people killed, by suicide bombers in Turkey.
Matt King, an equally sick, and in all honesty, funny Jackson joke there dude! well done!
juju, cut and paste is good! I write answers to questions in notepad and then when I'm done reading through and responding, I copy the whole lot to a new message!
Steevlan, Opposites Attract (Part 2) is killer. Some people can sound really pants when they go off on a freestyle frenzy, but Steve does it so well!
Master Yoda, I think the bail was around 1.2 million, or 1.8 or something (dollars that is). And no, if it was some random with a normal-size bank ballance, bail would have been less. Bail chrage is based on what you can afford. So if it were Bill Gates, it'd be billions, if it were someone normal, it'd be a few hundred dollars.
The Prez, happy 100 Tone Capone, happy 200
Alex Harris, If a woman has a 22 year old husband and a 17 year old son, she has re-married. However, if youre referring to the previous post by somone else whos name I already forgot, then she meant she has been married to her husband for 22 years, not she is married to a 22-year-old. You may know this, but that's how I read it the first time, and thought "what the f*ck? you had a kid when your husband was five? Michael Jackson could have some fun with your husband" but then I realised I'd just read it wrong! hehehe

Trutina, dude, that sucks. Hope your neural problems don't get worse. Take it real easy man, you're lucky you didn't break a bunch of limbs!

TJ uk, and everyone else asking the same question, the G3 tour is over. Seeing G3 in europe is unlikely at the moment, but whenever these guys do a solo tour it usually comes to the UK, so dont worry -they know there's loads of fans here.

If you go to as many european shows by Joe, Steve and all their peers, as you possibly can, it'll generate more interest in the genre and will increase the chances of G3 in europe.

Yoda, Die To Live Jem? isn't that the really early prototype one....all black with a make-shift handle? Yeah it's cool, but I think the mirror-top is the nicest one ever! Or the Jem10th with the binding and everything.
Carina, thanks for the pics. such good quality too! you rock
mischievous, about the changing of guitars thing: theres a few reasons for it. One is that they will have different guitars with different pickups, so they have a different tone. Another is that they will have different guitars in different tunings, so they'll change that depending on what tune they're playing. Also, with the amount of abuse these guys give their guitars, it only takes 5 or 6 songs and it starts to drop out of tune, so they'll swap around periodically to have them retuned while they keep playing.

About Steve's clothes - damn nice! I wonder who advises him on what to wear?!

flyclassic, Singapore would be an awesome place for Joe to do a gig, I hope he considers it when he draws up his tour schedule next time around!
Ovation, I don't believe Jem stands for anything. Before Ibanez started making them, Steve had a friend (Despagni) building guitars - his production stamp was "Jem Guitars". I think Ibanez took him on to help with production of Steve's guitars, cuz of the personal link, but that's all a bit vague in my memory.

mischievous, "why monkey?" a damn good question! I'd never thought of that, but now you mention it, why indeed should it be just for monkeys?! hehe.

Yeah I should think Steve has a large hand in his wardrobe selection, since it's him who's been to the various shops in Hollywood.

Ovation, yeah I thought Despagni's first name was Joe. thanks for clarifying! Those concept guitars are so f*ck*d up. The normal Jem's are so much better!
Ya Yo Gakk, you'll have to search Ebay for JS merchandise.....unfotunately. Ebay is kinda dodgy, don't like it much.

I heard a funny but harsh story about it the other day - some guy here in the UK was lookin for a Les Paul Gold Top, and had been quoted 3 grand by a shop. He said he could find it cheaper, and looked on Ebay, and sure enough, found a Les Paul Gold Top, advertised at 2-and-a-1/2 grand. Great. He payed for it, and a few days later recieved a Les Paul guitar case with a brick inside. That's the most expensive brick he'll ever buy.

silly twat.

anyway, yeah, you'll have to hunt for Joe merch, cuz it's just sold at his shows really. Good luck!

mischievous, you mean the 'credits'? those reems and reems of small-print that only the most committed watch all the way through. And even if it's an animation, 'grip' always seems to make an appearance. Get a grip! hehe. oh my god that was bad, I apologise! hehe

TASTEY, I'm glad I make you laugh....well I think i'm glad anyway, or is it a bad thing? Anyway, I hope i'm not going to have to define the word 'twat'?! as far as I know, it's an inter-continental term.
SOTD, 'Zap' by Eric Johnson. It's marvellous. I've just been tabbing the main verses before the bass solo starts. Great fun. Then again, maybe my SOTD should be EJ's 'Soulful Terrain' cuz it's a beautifully structured melody. hmmm.
no, G3 will still not be coming to England. or France. or anywhere, cuz it's still finished!
SatanBoogie, people playing with their mouths is pretty cool. I think Vai did it best.
Ovation1, what do you make of the confectionary in your country? random question I know, but my sister bought me some Japanese confectionary from a shop in London. It's really coo, and kinda different. It tastes nice, but is so unlike anything I've ever had before.

To anybody who doesn't know what it's like - some of it consists of mashed beans with a sweet syrupy jelly mixed with it, so it comes out kind like sweet refried beans. Crazy, but not unpleasant.

Anyway, was just wondering if there's anything I need to know? Is there anything it's best eaten with? hot or cold?! hehe. I'm very sorry guys, this has to be on of the weirdest questions ever posted on Talk To Joe!

Hooh yeah! Just got my replacement for Andy Timmons' "The Spoken And The Unspoken", cuz the last one I ordered had a massive chip out of the disc. This is an awesome album. "All Is Forgiven" is a great opening track. It was worth the 6-8 week wait!

TASTEY, don't need the definition of twat? that's a good thing, saves me explaining it! hehe
Did anybody else have trouble getting on here yesterday? I couldn't access any part of satriani.com - I got an msn search auto response saying "this website could not be found cuz your browser was written by a stupid person. To try again click here ------ to send abusive e-mail to Bill Gates, click here ------"
mischievous, you always read all the way through the credits? why? I guess it's okay to want to get your money's worth, but you'll never remember anything after the main cast list and a few other odd people! unless you have an unnaturally photographic memory! hehe
ThePrez, thanks for linking to that voting page. Joe's down to less than 3 percent now. that's very sad. But Steve is a close second behind Brian May! cool.

Oh, about Stevie - Dave, the tongue thing isn't a fake with a sustainer and a whammy pedal, cuz he did it at the London show with a guitar without the Sustainer in. Dave Weiner does it too and he doesn't have the Fernandez. And what's that about pro-tools? Steve doesn't program his stuff - it's almost all do-able, even if it does need rack effects.

Ovation1, cheers for your professional advice dude! That sounds dead posh - heating the mixture and pouring it over shaved ice! Sounds refreshing. Do you reckon I should be eating this heated tho? Sounds like it could be quite interesting!

thanks for the links - what a cool recipe for Anko; 1 cup of beans, 1/3 cup of sugar, 10 cups of water! That is so simple!

I was loaned "Racer X: Snowball of Doom" - sounds like a fun show!
SOTD, "Soulful Terrain" ~ Eric Johnson
Dizzy, like Stu Clone said, only to add that one of those 6-strings (the fretless neck I think) is a fixed bridge.
GODZILLA! What a killer track to end a record with. Racer X are cool!
along with Snowball Of Doom I was loaned Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell".......it's certainly metal. Don't like it tho.....bit too metal.
i've been a satch-aholic for about four year now, and my first CD was a Surfing With The Alien/Not Of This Earth box set. My favourite Satch tune is The Forgotten (Part 2) and I've been to one Satch concert. That's all I have to share, cuz as Satch-aholics go, I'm pretty boring! hehe
