Dizzy, it's hard to recommend amp settings for midnight cuz I don't know what amp and guitar you're using, and I could only really make a recommendation if your setup is similar to mine.

On the Chorus front, yeah I've heard that the Boss is a good one. You may find that some chorus pedals, like Joe's super-chorus, sound better when you're using two amps, using the stereo outputs of the pedal. I have my chorus plugged into two amps and it sounds better than when into one, but I need a new pedal - mine makes background noise cuz it's kinda cheap and old. So yeah, if you're just using one amp, the Boss will proably give the best sound, unless you want to spend 1.5 grand on a rack-mounted chorus processor! (I think not!)

BeeZer, forgiven! thanks for being decent about it. So hey, custom switching, how is yours customised? I'm intrigued, cuz I found the RG switching kind of entertaining when I changed my pickups! Yeah tone is something I've always found very important, that's why I like Eric Johnson so much. When I put the PAF Pro and Fred in my RG it just didn't sound that exciting to me, but it's just a personal thing. I'm sure that if I put a coil-tap push-pull pot where my tone pot is, these pickups would sound quite different.

Anyway, did your pickups arrive? I hope everything is in order and you're happy with it. It was suggested to me that I wind the bridge pickup right up close to the strings, which I did, and it seems to pull out the harmonics a bit better. Have a play around and see what you think!

Sammy Andrews, about that run ~ you've pretty much got it there - start slowly and gradually, purposefully, increase speed. A major rule of thumb to bare in mind is that you should be relaxed. If you are accurate with the placement of your left-hand fingers, you won't need to grip hard, and if you're not gripping hard, the notes will flow better. If you have one of those grip-master hand strengtheners, it may actually be worth getting rid of it, cuz it's just an insentive to be lazy with your finger placement!
r6rocker, 'uphill gardener'! hahahaha, well done!
PhryDom, yeah, hehe, I'd read that little nuggett of info about EJ and his battery-brand recognition! Where was that written? was it on his website, or in a guitar magazine? anyhow, I know he's specific about what battery goes in his wah pedal!

Dizzy, about the middle part of Midnight ~ just listened to it a few times and I see how important the tone is.

What guitar are you using? I mainly use a Jem into my Legacy, tho the amp isn't too important. The pickups and switch on my Jem are wired as follows: Position 1=neck humbucker; 2=middle single coil and half of neck humbucker; 3=middle single; 4=middle single and half of bridge humbucker; 5=bridge humbucker.

If you have an Ibanez guitar with two humbuckers and a single coil in the middle, this is how they will be wired. For a decent tone on Midnight, I would want something fairly acoustic sounding, so I'd use position 2 - the middle single coil and half of the Humbucker. If you use all of the humbucker the notes will slur together and you won't get the percussive tone you're after. It sounds very acoustic, so I'd also wind the tone on full.

If you're using a JS, then use the coil tap so you're using a single coil....that way you'll get the punchy crispness on each note you tap. And yes, it's all in the wrist. Joe played this in the gig I saw last summer in London - he sat on a chair and laid his guitar over his lap, then tapped out Midnight. He looked very relaxed!

Happy holidays to you too dude!

Sammy Andrews, yeah I know what you mean about it sounding crappy when it's slow, that's my main problem with learning scales! You tense up a lot? I know what I would instantly recommend for this - even if you're trying to learn the run Legato, start off by picking every note. That way, you will self-regulate the speed, and you will find that, because you are not trying to play fast but play synchronised, your left hand will relax.
Pitch no 8, about the adaptors. I can actually thoroughly recommend the Boss PSA adaptors. I use a PSA240 (cuz I'm in the UK and thus need a 240volt power supply - is it 120volts in the US?). Anyway yeah, they're really good, noiseless, and are designed for daisy-chaining a bunch of pedals, which is what I do, and it sounds great.
The Prez, to memorize the music better I would close the book (or turn the music sheets over, whatever you're using) for a while and start playing by ear. Don't keep the book closed, cuz it's a good way to learn the phrases, and learn them a section (say a bar or two) at a time, and when you can roughly remember the section you've just read, close the book and keep working of it.
I just made the mistake of listening to Racer X's "Technical Difficulties". God I feel sh!t when I listen to Paul Gilbert! boohoo. i think i'm gonna jack the guitar in and find something I have a chance at being good at! hehe, only kidding. I keep telling myself that, but then I see things like the Luke Model and the new Vai acoustic - the EP7. what do you guys think? it looks quite nice to me!
Diegomas, check out the LISF DVD, Joe explains on there how much of a Hendrix-ist he is!
Ovation1, can you tell me some Japanese for simple things such as "Hello" "Goodbye" "How are you?" and "I love you" (something nice to tell my girlfriend! hehe). I've been saving what you've translated so far, it's great! thanks dude. Oh and one more thing - Toto DVD! you know you want it!

Shredmyster, Joe is now using customised Peavy XXX heads. They're going to be made into a JS signature head, which ought to debut at NAMM next month if it's done in time.
Ovation1, hehe, thanks loads for that dude! the "will you marry me" thing made me chuckle - I think if I were to ask that, I'd do it in English....it'd kind of take something away from the moment if I had to pause to translate! hehehehe. It's all good tho, yeah I'm enjoying learning these phrases! thank you very much!
I reckon that EP7 (Euphoria) Acoustic is gonna be well over a grand......more like two.

migupais, are you remembering to bar around the 24th fret with your left hand while you lift the trem? Also, if you are lowering (dropping) the trem, you need to do the pinch harmonic first. Drop it quickly and it will sound right. The bar with the left hand is the most important part, cuz that's what makes it so high pitched!
Ovation1, yeah! more Japanese! hehe, cheers for that dude.
The Farting Gnome, well, Lukather used to drink too, but I dunno what he's been doing since rehab. Dunno what EJ does....something tells me he's into art too!
BeeZer, you been waiting an awfully long time for those pickups! Where'd you get them? I ordered both of my sets from Coda Music, and they always arrived the next morning. I know it would probably require an extra day to get them to Ireland, but yeah, that's what I would advise. They seem to be by far the cheapest retailer as well!
Sandman, that's 100% custom for Mr Satriani. In fact he may have done it himself. You won't find that for sale anywhere! I know, it sucks, cuz I really want one too!

Jazzer13, go for a Morley Bad Horsie if it's within your budget. Morley Wah pedals are great. And regards the Keeley DS1 - I dunno, it might be the one you want, but then again you might not like it. Vai liked it, but Joe didn't. hope you do like it!

and BeeZer, on the contrary, Morley switchless wah pedals are more reliable! There's no pot so it doesn't wear out. there's no swicth, so that doesn't wear out. Actually the only moving part is the hinge! that's why it's more reliable! Also the LED tells you when it's on or off.

Dizzy, yeah you're just being picky! hehe. do what you have been doing - slide from the first to the third!
Я
Sugarbear, I thought that Joe had taught at Berkeley at first, but then I read more carefully the article where I got it from. Then I realised what it was saying - while Vai was a student at Berkeley, he took lessons from 'local guitar hero' Joe Satriani. It had been written as 'Satriani taught Vai while he was at Berkeley', which is why it's easy to misinterpret. I dunno where you heard this, but a lot of magazines/books/websites have it written like that!
BeeZer, just read your post about Dawson's Lazy Music! That's not cool....you probably don't want to be getting your pickups through them again! hehe

Miguel, sorry, I should have elaborated and said to bar the 24th fret, or theoretical 24th if you dont have a two-octave fretted board! but you get what I meant, which is the main thing. Mmm, shiny new Ibanez acoustic for christmas.....I should think you are f*ck*n happy! hehe.

BeeZer, happy 100
Ovation1, glad you like the Vai DVD.....lucky bastard! hehe. What I really can't grasp is that he filmed the show for this DVD in the UK, yet the UK is going to be the last country to get it. How irritatin - I have to wait until the end of January to see the gig that I was at!
Jared, no Jem for christmas? that's a damn shame! hehe. You want mine? Ok you lot, I need your opinions; I like my Jem, it's beautiful, and cool, but I'm wondering if I would find a Luke model more playable. I've been playing my Strat loads lately and I love it's sound, and the neck doesn't cause muscle probems in my hand like the thin Ibanez necks seem to. I played a Music Man Axis Sport and it played great, it was comfortable, and the sheer variety of sounds it made, what with the Piezo pickup, was astounding.

I think I would find a Luke more versatile and useable but I would miss the Jem's awesome looks, the huge trem cutaway and the abuse you can give it, and the handle! I could only afford a Luke if I turn in my Jem in part exchange......what should I do?!

Luke The Duke, you really want to change the pickups in that guitar? I have a GSA60 too, and I'm half tempted to change the pickups. Yeah you can use different brands....it may just be a little more confusing to wire in. I would put a pair of Strat-sounding single coild in the single coil slots, or even stacked humbuckers, but as long as they sound like a Strat. Then put something completely different, something shreddy, or something really fat and chunky, in the bridge, so you get two guitars in one!
clarky, happy 900
Juju, take care in the snowstorm! I hope your dog's breath doesn't steam up the windows (I so nearly put 'dog breath' then...that would have been embarrassing!) hehe

Ovation1, yeah I gotta keep the Jem. I've had a couple of days to think about it and it's just too pretty to give up!

Ethn, who's claiming that Joe plays out of tune live? are they nuts? maybe they're tone-deaf! hehe. The one major thing that sticks in my mind from seeing Joe live, was that his whole performance was flawless. I really couldn't pick anything out from it that I thought could be improved. it was polished, like Hubble's mirror! hehe. Out of tune my ass.
BeeZer, sorry for delay, I was away over the weekend. Yeah I've put a PAF Pro and Fred in my RG. it's an RGT42, with standard switching. So you got 'em working ok? difference between the two - the PAF PRo doesn't tend to let the notes run together so easily when playing legato. the Fred has a nasal twang which makes it quite recognisable, but if you turn the tone right up, it tends to loose out on the bass frequencies.

since I'm late here, it looks like you have it covered, but the main things I found, which could be useful to anybody else doing an installation, were these:

Ibanez wiring is the same as DiMarzio wiring, so the replacement will almost certainly be colour-for-colour. I know that there's one colour that Ibanez use different to Dimarzio...is it green for blue? something like that. anyway, which ever the odd colour is, treat it as the same.

Make sure you use a solder sucker to keep it clean - i Didn't when I first did the installation, and I got solder all over the PCB on the switch, which is why it didn't really work!

You can use crocodile clips or clothes pegs to attach the wires to different terminals, without actually soldering, until you find out how it should be wired.

The ibanez website has wiring diagrams for all of it's guitars, and some of it's prestige models, like RG1320 will have the wiring schematic you're after.

regards Floyd Rose bridges........if it's a nw guitar (Alex! hehe) you shouldn't need to change any of the setup, so try not to fiddle with it! If the bridge has sunk into the body then you probably do need to change the spring tension by moving the claw inside the cavity. With the strings slackened or removed, push the trem until it is flat (parallel) with the body, using the trem-arm, then put playing cards or a folded cloth under the back of the trem to hold it in that exact position. Change the spring tension so that the springs go tighter/looser, and you will find the ballance. Floyd Roses don't much like to be fiddled with!
Luke The Duke, Joe uses DiMarzio PAF Pro (neck) and Fred (bridge) humbuckers. It's a Floyd Rose type trem, an Ibanez version of it. If I do change the pickups in my GIO, i'd probably put DiMarzio's in the single coil slots - maybe some Blue Velvets, or some Fast Track 1 stacked humbuckers, cuz they sound like Strat pickups. I'd then put a Seymour Duncan humbucker in front of the bridge - probably a 59 or something like that.

Are you wanting to change your bridge too? I wouldn't bother.....the guitar isn't worth it. I wanted to once, but realised the Satellite bridge on there is actually fine.

Mr Nick, I have to say, the Ibanez delay pedal is pretty sexy. but 5 quid for a pedal? can you really go wrong with that?! hehe
Mischievous, happy new year to you too!
For Sale Ibanez RGT42 with DiMarzio PAF PRo and Fred (it works fine...i got the soldering sorted out! hehe) about 450 quid, couple of months old, with case. TC Electronics chipped ibanez Tubescreamer - chipped to sound like a MK I, with a full chipset to change it if you want a different sound. that I would like about 85/90 quid for. And I wanna get rid of my Boss MDII as well, about 25/30 quid.

They all work perfectly, I just don't want 'em any more.

Hey folks! I'm not gonna be around any more until friday probably, so I thought I'd say Happy new Year to you all, best wishes for 2004, and here's my personal ideal music awards for 2003! hehe, enjoy

Album of the year: Mourning Widows ~ Mourning Widows

Newly-discovered artist of the year: Andy Timmons

Song/Tune of the year: "Eastern Flier" ~ Igor Belsky

Best guitar solo in a song/tune: "Too Late" ~ Nuno Bettencourt

Best Joe Satriani tune of the year!: "Hill Groove"

Music DVD of the year: Live In Amsterdam, 25th Anniversary ~ Toto (I haven't seen Vai's Astoria DVD and it's not out till '04 here in the UK, so that's why it isn't the winner there!)

Musician Of The Year (I'm gonna take some sh*t for this one!): Eric Johnson

voodoo chile 15, JS100 is pretty cool. It's not a JS1000, but it's pretty cool. I don't personally think it's worth buying it with the intention of replacing the pickups outright, cuz they're expensive. See if there's any shops/magazines selling/advertising second-hand JS1000's.
Michelle, Simon Cowell is a self-absorbed toss-pot. He is not the best of british, but he sure thinks he is! hehe
Ovation1, hey, what's "Happy new year" in Japanese?! thanks for all the cool things you've been teaching me, it's very interesting.
Happy New Year Joe!

Ovation1, "Akemashite Omedetto Gozaimasu"! hehe, thanks for that dude. Year of the monkey huh? I was aparrently born in the year of the pig....I hope this doesn't have bad implications!

Madeh, I see both sides of the fence here - I can understand that you were just starting an interesting discussion, but I can also see that "talking to joe" about which of his songs you think is a bit sh*t, is perhaps disrespectful.

I didn't used to be so keen on 'New Blues' but now I really rather like it. I still don't listen to it that much cuz I usually want to put something else on (ie. Hill Groove. hehe) but it's pretty groovy.

BeeZer, damn, should have waited....might you be tempted by a "PAF JOE"? hehe, i'll be interested to see how that sounds.
TASTEY, if a guy spends 7 hours talking then it's not fake, simple as that. Guys often find it hard spending 7 minutes talking if they don't want to be talking, so 7 hours is a good call.
guitarded boy, retirement plan for joe? nah I doubt it. The peavey ought to sound great......they tend to sound quite nice anyway.

and yeah, Iron Maiden Rule, he was a long-time Marshall user, but he's tried everything. He's gigged a few other things too, like Cornford. Everyone dabbles a little with amps!

guitarded boy, yeah it's an all valve amp. can't remember how many, but something like 4 pre-amp valves and 5 power-amp valves. somethin like that anyway!
Olly, players 'rut'...doesn't that sound familiar?!
Clarky, hitmen? pretty cheap at the moment, especially if you find an american one, cuz the exchange rate is good! (take my word for it! hehe)
So, when I first found out about the DT gig in London, the website I checked for tickets said it was February 17th. I couldn't go to this cuz I'll be in the US at the time (nudge-nudge Austin, I haven't forgotten to remind you!), so I didn't bother getting a ticket. But now I find out it's on January 17th and I could have gone! dammit! Also, anyone here in the UK want to get a ticket? My mate has one to sell - he doesn't want to go any more cuz it'll cost too much to get there, and like me, he's not sure how well he'd handle 5 solid hours of Dream Theater, especially considering the disappointing quality of the new album.

Gbloke2004, what, you want to download Vai's DVD off Kazaa? Why can't you just buy it like everyone else? It hasn't yet been released in the UK....couple of weeks more until it is released.

Ovation1, watching Vai play Whispering A Prayer is a moment you'll never forget? I respect that dude, I know exactly what you mean! Bouncing the trem arm on the strings to make that cool sound at the beginning....Steve is so good at making guitar music enjoyable to watch! I can't wait or the DVD to come out!
r6rocker, "That Was Then, This Is Now" and "Black Pearls" were both (excellent) 2003 releases!
KenC, er, the JS1000 and 100 don't appear to have identical body styles. if you turn the guitars over and look at the neck joint, the 100 is standard, with the body contours around the joint being smooth and flush. The aerofoil shape of the 1000 is such that the wood around it's neck joint comes out to an even raised point where the metal plate is! really hard to explain, but it's one of the subtle differences that suprised me. It does make the JS1000 more comfotable.
Gbloke/Saviour, for the rising, screaming harmonic there is fretting involved - lay the left-hand thumb across the area of the (theoretical) 24th fret, then pinch the harmonic at one of the harmonic points between there and the bridge!
mischievous, as far as we're concerned, Slovenia is Eastern Europe cuz it's east of Germany and Italy! hehehe, sorry, I'll learn the geography of my home-continent a little better!

About Petrucci's sound - he does it in the "Metropolis" Dream Theater DVD too, and it's an effect. He was using his Music Man guitar for that...I guess it was something like that Boss acoustic simulator pedal...pretty impressive. then again, he might have one of his Ernie Ball/Music Man guitars loaded with their (very very impressive) acoustic pickup....it sounds far better than any of the Ibanez ones, but I still reckon it's a pedal, cuz that would explain the speed at which the sound changes!

SOTD, "More Than Words" ~ Extreme.

I've been busy learning it this afternoon, I love Nuno's vocal harmony, and the chord progression is so simple yet so nice. I only know how to play the intro sequence tho....need to find full TAB for it!

mischievous, precicely like that!

Yoda, yeah there's just a little toggle switch that selects the Piezo pickup.....it's the same on the Luke and Axis Sport models.....it's such a good pickup.
TASTEY, spelling reference ~ "Enuff Zenuff" I think, or maybe "Z-nuff"...I'm gonna have to trawl through my Vai records now, he mentions them somewhere!
Ty, I finally got Extreme IV: Waiting For The Punchline. Loads of people had said "oh yeah it's by far the best Extreme album, it's heaps better than the others". I have to disagree. I think I, II and III are amazing, especially with things like "He Man, Woman Hater", "Tragic Comic" and the whole first third of "III Sides OF Every Story".
michelle, look up the CD on amazon and it'll tel you a track-list
Jimmy Kane, Yeah I didn't used to like More Than Words so much, but I love it to bits now, it's such a cool song! Pornograffitti as the best Extreme album? ooh, I'm torn between that and "III Sides"!
Ovation1, You will be floored, he definately has it all, even the band!!....I know I'll be floored, I was there! hehehe, that's why I'm envious of you guys all having this DVD already...I really want to see how it came out.

I'm just disappointed that Eric Sardinas's set wasn't put on there as a special feature, cuz he spent quite some time standing right in front of me and my mate, lookin at us grinning broadly under his hat, cuz we were the only ones making LOADS of noise for him....he deserved it, he put on such a good show, but everyone else was just waiting for Steve to come out.

Highlights of the show for me? umm, the Fire Garden Suite, Blood And Glory, the lasers on his fingers even tho they came off and the smoke wasn't as thick as he wanted it, and the end when Eric came out and jammed on Liberty.

Clarky, your assessment of fan-players is very interesting. there's so much there that I agree with. actually no, I agree with all of it. That's the sort of thing that people need to print out, real big, then stick it to their amp!
KenCampbell, hehehe, I think I can forgive you for not studying a guitar's neck joint. it was just one of the first thing I noticed the first time a picked up a JS1000, having played my mate's 100 (same mate who helped make loads of noise for Eric Sardinas, for point of reference!). And I agree with your recommendation, save the extra money and get the better model, definitely worth it!
any of you guys in the UK, if you know where I can get hold of a Bill Lawrence pickup, please let me know (the same humbucker that's in the Washburn N4, for your info)!
Adrianorb, #15 was by far the funniest! well done!

Ty, yeah the production on III Sides is really impressive. It really shows off Nuno's song-writing skills, and yeah, the coupled drum and bass tones are sweet. Also, Nuno's percussive technique really shows up.....you can really hear the squelch he gets from the Bill Lawrence bridge pickup, especially on things like "Politicalamity".

Clarky, I actually do think that wallpapering your Cab with such rules of thumb is a potentially productive course of action! hehe, it'd certainly put me in my place every time I tell myself "hell, that sounded pretty cool!".

You ever see Vai's statement about anyone wanting to be a virtuoso? I have that taped to my wall, jnust in case I ever get big-headed! if you don't know the quote I'm referring to, I'll write it for you, it's pretty funny!

Narface, double whammy? no I haven't heard of that...you got pictures? I'm really intrigued, sounds like a very Vai thing to do!
Ovation1, can we see me on the DVD? I'll let you know when the bloody thing finally comes out in this country! hehehe. I hope so, I was right at the front, in front of Dave Weiner, looking really stupid with my short hair. hahaha.

Yeah Eric played for about 30 minutes, all his own stuff, including "Aggravatin' Pappa". He climbed into the audience and played, used a bottle of Budweiser as a slide, and set his guitar on fire and then played it on the floor! his set was so good, and he played so much that you don't hear on any of his CD's!

I think David Lee Roth and Gary Cherone would also be in my top-5 list of singers!

Gibsonez, Welcome to T2J! you're from Russia? awesome! since you've just arrived here you will have missed my post the other day about visiting your country. Basically I was saying that if anybody wants to teach me some Russian I'll not complain, hehe. I'm really interested in your country and I really want to visit in a couple of years ~ do you happen to know if there's any good online information resources that will teach me a little more, especially about Moscow and St Petersberg?

Ty, the vai quote ~ If you want to be a virtuoso like me, you have to set your sights above me. You have to go beyond what I'm doing. And that's for you to figure out, because if you can do that, then I'm going to be trying to go beyond what you're doing" Steve Vai.

He aparrently said this once in a magazine interview. It's a slightly tongue-in-cheek comment, but equally true, and if it wasn't Vai who said it, I'd think it was self-absorbed, egosentric and big-headed, but I think he is in the unusual position of being able to get away with it!

I can't walk in my bedroom without seeing that statement, which is a very good thing.....i'd rather tell people that I'm a bit sh*t than tell them I'm god's gift to guitar-playing, cause that's the sort of people I really don't like!

Clarky, regards the above, yeah I think it's ok to feel good about something when it is good, but for me, there's a difference between that and telling people that I am a great player! Cuz that's not true, hehe. I'm an average player, and sometimes (if I'm lucky) I come up with some great-sounding phrases. Okay, so I have a low opinion of myself! hehehe, sh*t happens.
Ovation1, "damn that sounded like the highlight of the night"...I hate to say it but, almost, yeah! Obviously, Vai's set was absolutely mind-blowing, and having it all so heavily modified with Billy's input on the Bass, made it so unique. But, leaving out Eric's set was a big mistake, unless Eric kept the footage and makes a DVD of his own.

The flaming guitar thing was so cool - he took a plastic cup of water then drank it all. Then he took another plastic cup (aparrently water but actually white spirit) and poured it's contents on the floor. He lit a match and dropped it, but it went out. He lit another one, dropped it, but it went out. He took his last match, lit it, dropped it and WHOOMF! The puddle roared, he laid his resonater down in it, then tapped out a solo on the floor, spun it round a few times to put the fire out and finished his song! damn cool!

See if you can find someone in the front row wearing a dark blue home-made "Ibanez" T-shirt! hehe

Jazzer13, that's damn funny about the laser pointer and your dog! hehe, animals are so cute when they're stupid!
Happy 50,000 T2J!
I'd also have to put Bobby Kimball in my singer list, he has such a powerful voice, and high notes that would make Mariah Carey wince!
Greetings Ice9man!
Narface, thanks for the Double Whammy link! I wonder what he used it for....looks like it doesn't get used much. I also wonder how stable those bridges are!

Ovation1, he printed "The modern day virtuoso refuses to die!" inside the Alive In An Ultra World cover, but the other statement was one that was only made in an interview, to my knowledge.

I dunno that I was causing a rucus, I was to astounded at being there. I probably spent the whole 2.5 hours trying to shout but looking amazed! hehe

JS JS, yeah I think the new Corvette is pretty cool. If you haven't looked already, check out www.supercars.net. also have a look at the new Chrysler ME Four-Twelve Concept, specifically, it's power and theoretical top speed and acceleration times! quite amazing!

Aarren, where did you get your shirt? (the one in the photo you linked us to)

Clarky, hehe, the question about being in a band! I always laugh at that one. I have fore-fronted a couple of my own bands and have always got an excellent response, and yeah, people tend to dig what I'm doing. I have a band now, which includes someone i've been mates with for along time, but we can't produce sh*t cause the rest of my band are lazy and whenever we get to practice, they say "I dunno, I can't think of anything. I can't be bothered". This is a real sore point for me some times.

But hey, what did you do when you wanted to find a band that would support you? It seems quite hard finding people who are equally interested in writing something that sounds cool!

I know that I'm not too bad cause I have a sort of a reputation, but I'd like to be so much better, and I always will - I'll never be good enough, that's the philosophy that ought to keep me learning.

welcome back Greg!
Ovation1, have fun with your new Jem dude! How many of the blue ones were made? it wasn't many was it?!
Michelle, hahaha! I'm wetting myself laughing at that "Doctors Foster & Smith kittywalk stroller". haha, my cat would start by dis-owning me if I put her in one of those! It's just so humiliating!

oh and the best part - its 119 bucks! haha, I'd be hard pushed to hand over a fiver, and even then it would only be for the sheer entertainment value!

i have images of the cat chasing it's tail in that stroller, or a fly going in there and the cat going nuts!

happy 1100

Ovation1, I very much doubt if that crack is repairable - it's more likely to need a whole neck cause of the way a scarf joint is made, but hey, it's industrial, so I could be wrong. It shouldn't make to much difference to the strength of the neck, unless you start picking the guitar up by it's strings!

Aarren, that sucks about the shirt! hehe, Iron's are bastards, as are tumble-dryers. They only wreck your favourite clothes. I dunno if that shirt was a favourite of yours, but you must have liked it if the iron attacked it!

Zachary, your explanation of the multi-radius design was well-interesting! thanks dude, I understand it's full purpose now!
Guitarnut, they're not 'booing' Stu, they're yelling 'STUUUUUUU'. Honest. I hope someone else sees this before they ask! Maybe Jon should put an explanation of the mis-percieved booing of Stu under the posting box, along with the notes on how to make things bold and italic and [so on]so on.[/so on]
Narface, depends what you think! What amp are you running the pickups into? The crappy Ibanez pickups in my GIO sound pass-able through my legacy, and that's saying something!

Also, it depends what pickup sound you want, so you don't necessarily have to go with DiMarzio, but their good relationship with Ibanez would be in your favour - it makes the installation easier

Clarky, thanks for your kindness and wisdom dude! Your words, I feel, are ones to reflect upon, so I'll carry that in mind next practice session. Thanks again, it's always useful to hear these kind of opinions from someone so musically developed as yourself.

oh, and what you said about seeing the same names credited with song-writing. Case in point would have to be Extreme - Nuno and Gary wrote everything, but when Paul Geary left after III Sides, it all changed and Waiting For The Punchline sounded kind of strange (but still cool! hehe)

SOTD: Pavilion/Venus Reprise ~ Eric Johnson
Ty, damn right man. I think Steve could get away with being cockey if he wanted to, but the best part is that he doesn't want to. I find it really refreshing also to read things he says about wanting to learn new stuff, and the thing he said about trying Yngwie's Strat, and it being an 'entirely different animal'. That sort of thing is amazing to read, cuz it shows that he doesn't think he is 100% at everything. Actually he doesn't think he's 100% at anything. This is why I get annoyed when people do call him arrogant!
Goof, yes the JS1200 will hopefully be commercial, that's why it's making it's Debút at the NAMM show

crushingday62, you might get lucky about seeing Metallica S&M - the conductor (who's name I don't recall) of the orchestra, has gotten ill and has said that he wants to do an S&M: 2 efore he gets too sick to do it

Aarren, way to go on the regional manager thing! good work dude. I hope your iron doesn't get pissed off with your uniform! hehe
Zach, pretty interesting about the fret-radius thing. I'd like to know how that turns out, it's a method I've not heard of doing! It may feel a little odd cuz on some areas of the neck the frets will be fatter than on others, but I don't see why it won't work.

I have the action fairly low I suppose - actually, I have the action on my Jem about half a mil higher than is recommended in the Ibanez 'handbook', but the strat is quite low. It'd be interesting to see what changes you might need to make to the pickup heights when you have the lower action. Keep us posted!

mikesb, most easily recognised guitarist tone? I'd definitely put Eric Johnson in there!
Clarky, examples of bands where a shake-up has done them good? ummmm.....that's a tricky one!
Happy Birthday Neil! I was going to write 'happy birthday Yoda' but kind of strange that would have looked, mmm? happy 400 too!
Luke The Duke, I always use D'addarrio XL .009-.42's. Just ask for the 'purple pack'! (actually blue, with a purple 'XL' in a circle).

also, what josh said is very true - I used to break Ernie Ball strings even tho I'm gentle with my strings, but I haven't broken a single D'Addarrio, without using wire-cutters!

Sammy Andrews, ah yes the neck is an identical digital rendering of the neck of joe's favourite guitar, but is the frettboard identical? If I remember rightly, Ibanez dont state that the frettboard is exactly the same radius as the JS1000. it certainly doesn't feel the same! check it out dude
JS JS, about the noisy DS-1. Zach's response was comprehensive to say the least, but in case your problem remains unsolved after trying his suggestions, then here's my 2 cents! hehe.

What are you using to supply it with power? if you're using a battery then you might want to replace that, if you're using a power-adapter, then it may be that. I thought it was okay to use any 9-volt adapter, but when I first tried my Smash Box it sounded absolutely awful. I got a BOSS PSA240 and it changed everything. All my pedals are on a daisy chain, and sound sweet.

that said, my Bluesbreakers make a bit of background noise, but that's just because of simple, no-nonsense engineering on Marshall's part!

JS JS/Michelle, yeah the new Corvette is lovely, and pearlescent paint would look dead posh. What colours would you choose? I've always thought TVR came up with the best choices - green/purple and blue/purple looked great. Green/blue might look nice on a 'vette?!
Crispin, enjoy the Dream Theater gig man! a couple of my mates are going, but they might have to leave early so they can get a sensibly-timed train/bus back to Bournemouth. If you're aware of a few less-than-twenty-year-olds leaving early, that's them!
S1220, ask IceZer about those pickups! hehe, she really loves them.

I also have those pickups in my RG, and I personally don't find them that exciting, but it depends on what sounds good to you. What kind of tone do you want? are you after something smooth, something cool, something hot, something strat-like, something twangy, and what is your preferred amp-tone - heavy distrotion, smooth creamy overdrive, light overdrive or totally clean?

Ty, dude, those are old posts you were reading! you must have been lookin for something specific! hehe, anyway, yeah Starry Night and Hill Groove are (in my opinion) the two outstanding tracks of SBM.

Austin/chris, ouch. I didn't realise he'd actually died...I knew he was ill but damn, that's a shame. Rest In Peace, Michael Kamen

Charlie F, that's a killer question dude! I have a Jem, I've played a JS1000 - they're so close but so different. I'd say the Jem is more consistently built (ie, you won't get a bad one) and more fancy, but the JS has the better neck. They both have a variety of tones, the Jem's trem probably has a little more travel in it, but the JS frettboard is easier to use.
IceZer, pinch the air with your thumb and forefinger. now put a plectrum between those finger tips. When you pick the string, let the tip of your thumb brush the string as the plectrum leaves the string. That's a pinch harmonic.

No, definitely not the same as artificial. check out Joe's "Guitar Secrets" book and Eric Johnson's first "Hot Licks" tutorial video for a good descritpion of loads of different types of harmonics.

S1220, what OCPS470 said! hehe, serioucly tho, you should check out his sound clips on his IUMA - they're dead sexy, and a good demonstration of the pickups. Oh, and he knows his S series' so any questions about them....don't ask me! hehe

And I agree with what he said about the pickups being great for Joe - especially the Fred. It has that distinctive nasal twang which means it can't really sound like anything unique.....whatever amp tone you have, it's still quite obviously a DiMarzio Fred. I do recommend Evolutions, and like chris said, the AirZone and AirNorton are good.

Although, F-spacing doesn't make all that much difference, but still get 'em F-spaced anyway! yah, it's a gimmick!

regards instrumental guitarists - Eric Johnson does some instrumental, some vocal, it's all beautiful; Andy Timmons; Jenniffer Batten; Jon Petrucci of 'Dream Theater' and 'Liquid Tension Experiment' will be releasing his own solo record this year (hopefully); Ritchie Kotzen; Greg Koch (if you like f*ck*d up jazz); Frank Gambale; Igor Belsky; George Lynch; Tony MacAlpine

Clarky, "and I'll get lynched by the die hards I know.. but this is my opinion... " hahaha, isn't that always the way?! Die-hard fans are bastards! who'd have 'em? hehe

you found DT tickets for saturday?! jesus cristo! that must have taken some searching. Hmph, and they said it was sold out!

michelle, regards the pearlescent's - I rememebered which one is nicest; have you seen last year's Ibanez Ergodyne EDR270 (i think) guitar? it was sparkly silver with purple contrast. it looks fantastic. That would probably be my favourite!
mikesb or anyone else who knows, what is the Buzz Feitin system and how does it work? it has a cool name so it attracts me to guitars that have it. hehehe.

Like the Washburn N4; it's a Nuno model, with a Seymour Duncan pickup, a Bill Lawrence pickup, a Steven's cutaway, a Buzz Feitin tuning system and a Floyd Rose bridge....all those names must mean it's good! hehehe. actually, having played it, I can seriously say it's a beauty, I want one, but can't afford it!

Luke The Duke, I change them roughly once a month, but sometimes they last a long time if I'm being gentle but playing it every day. every 4-6 weeks is a good general rule, and every 3-4 months I get it done by the shop where I got my guitar, cuz I know it'll get a decent setup! (but that's only cuz it's a Floyd Rose bridge....if it's any other kind then setup is easy anyway, if at all necessary)
Bartjuh 15, we don't know if Joe is coming to Europe yet, but Steve Vai is coming to Amsterdam on the 22nd/23rd/24th May! Check out his site if you like him!
TheLordOfCheesecake, I bow in your presence - cheesecake is the devine fruit that graces this earth. hehe. oh, and 'Strictly Commercial' is a great recommendation, especially so everyone can get a chance to be blessed with experiencing "The Muffin Man". Frank was so cool!

TheLordOfCheesecake, yeah it is truly sad that Frank is gone, and it is truly great that he wrote his stuff without the influence of drugs. I wish I could have seen one of Frank's shows - it must have been amazing, and yes, what a guitarist!

Surferdave, I'd like to try one of those Clapton Strat's. I had a play with a Highway 1 Strat the other day and it was really nice - i'm tempted to get one if I can sell my RG and stuff.

Yeah the fatter frets, like on the Vai models, make it easier to play fast runs, because you don't have to press the string so hard to push the note out between the frets. It's most noticeable as an advantage for Legato playing, but it's better for everything really!

Greg M, Joe and Steve in the UK without Yngwie....we can live in hope. hehe. I know it sounds tight, but I feel the same. Anyway, it'd be great to see a show of just Joe and Steve together...they would really connect and come up with some amazing stuff!
Matt Martinez, D'Addario 9's and 10's for me, and I use (preferrably small) heavy picks - Dunlop Jazz III picks are nice. If not then I'll use Planet Waves Jerry Garcia picks.
Aarren, ooh you're going to have some fun with that Paul Gilbert model! nice one. I tried one of the 10 year old blue and pink ones last month - it's a really fun guitar, I'm sure you'll put yours to great use!
TheBob, the Ibanez website (Japan or USA I think) has wiring diagrams for both the JS100 and 1000.
UF Dean, which Alien Love Secrets track do you think sounds like it should have been an EJ number? I'm most intrigued!
UF Dean/Michelle, spray cans are not suitable for spraying guitars. To nicely paint it yourself, you first need to put fiber-glass resin all over the body, then rub it back until it's a really thin layer. And then you need to be using a spray gun with 2-pac paint (I don't know that much about 2-pac and what's different, but there's a process to it which makes it very even, very durable, and resistant to fade).

You can get pearlescent paint from auto-traders. It's usually used to paint car/bike body panels and kits. That's why you need to put some kind of poly-resin on the guitar first, just like you do with canoes, for example.

eta, you multi-posted dude, that's a sin! hehe. anyway, yeah, if chrushingday's explanation didn't make sense, then you put [letter i]text[/letter i]. only you just put i instead of 'letter i'. it's a pair of square brackets containing the representative letter before and after the text you want to modify, only the second pair of brackets also has a forward-slash in it.
s1220, about the necks - it's the fretboard that is compound radius. the neck could be the same as your Ibanez Wizzard II neck, but with a compound radius fretboard.
Clarky, hahaha, I live in a village, I know how you feel. I've had to fend off the village-idiot with the angry end of my middle finger on more than one occasion. hehe. which Vai show are you going to in Amsterdam? there's a 1-in-100-times-3 chance that I'll see you there!
Flagg, recommending Kazaa for finding Joe's music, on Joe's site is a little disrespectful!
IceZer, the Ibanez RGT42 is good. Yes, I am selling mine, but i still think it's good. hehe. I just don't use it cause of my Jem.

But, the thru-neck allows amazing access to the 17th-24th frets, and the neck is very nice. The binding and the fatness of the frets make the neck feel like a PGM. The bridge is a Lo-TRS II like on the old JS100, so it's pretty good, although it gets unstable when the strings get tired.

Mine is in metallic copper with dark metallic grey hardware, it looks sweet!

mick97, thanks for the link mate. I'm eager to try it too, what a beauty the AT300 is! I can't wait. I wonder what the pickups are, and I wonder how much it'll cost.

Flagg, fair comment. If you can't find it anywhere and you have bought everything else of Joe's then I guess downloading is acceptable!
IceZer, the RGT42 is metallic copper in colour - looks like a California Redwood, or the inside of a pine tree, or even mahogany, only it's metallic. I'm selling it for £450 if I can because it is with a fitted Ibanez RG hardcase, and it has a DiMarzio PAF Pro and Fred installed, oh and a sexy little Allen-wrench holder on the back of the headstock! hehe. It's about 5 months old.

about it's sound - I actually find it's sustain pretty good. The standard pickups that were in it are not too cool, and that actually dragged the sound down. The DiMarzio's make it sound much better. even if they're not my preferred kind of tone, they still sound good (as you know!).

nice website!

Roland2112, I heard a bit of that Satch/Deep Purple gig on cassette, but that was a copy too. I'm ok with downloading stuff that hasn't been commercially released, like Vai's Carvin Legacy Demo for example.
Matt Martinez, I thought EP stood for Electronic Promotion! hehe....haven't a clue mate!
UF Dean, you're welcome. and regards "The Boy From Seattle", I kind of know what you mean. There's some similarity, but that goes when he puts the delay on, and he doesn't seem to use any Pentatonic/blues scales so the lead lines sound different.
Ovation1, do you know where the Guitar Wars DVD is going to be sold? and am I right in thinking Nuno is on there?
I ordered a Bill Lawrence L500xl earlier, a bridge pickup the same as in Nuno's Washburn N4. I can't wait to see how it turns out. I'll start off with it in my GIO and see what happens!
PhryDom, yeah my dad used spray cans to do a 4-colour sunburst on an electro-acoustic he restored. it looks dead professional, but it's very hard to get it right. My comment was based on the fact that painting a guitar successfully and evenly with an aerosol can is very very difficult and takes some practice. It's easier to use a spray-gun with liquid paint. You can use modelling-paint, like the humbrol stuff you see in art and hobby shops. that will work fine.
Clarky, hehe, glad I can make ya laugh mate! Yeah I don't know the exact date I'm going cause my sister's mate in Heineken-land has the tickets! hehe. When I find out I'll make a sort-of-public announcement!

Amerfarah, the Vai movie you're talkin about is Crossroads, and it's not an Ibanez. It's a Jackson. And he sold it for charity as far as I know.

Just wondering, what was your point about Eric Johnson? do you think he is better than Steve or isn't better than Steve? I think Steve is technically more developed, but Eric Johnson is my favourite musician, so it's not necessarily all about who plays the most/weirdest notes.

Look out for Vai's lkondon DVD, it's definitely worth getting. And the G3 '03 DVD is hopefully going to be out next month

Mischievous, yeah the Anthology records are now available in the EU, but they're expensive.
Death Cube K, my Bill Lawrence L500xl arrived this morning and promtly found itself in the bridge position of my GIO. This is the fattest pickup I use, what a fantastic investment! I'm so pleased with myself, hehe.

Excuse my ignorance, but what country are you from? I have a feeling you're from the US? am I right?! anyway, I got it from "Machinhead Music" here in England. When i talked to the dude on the phone he said "I don't think we have any of those at the moment but I can get one in for you if you like....oh hold on....yeah, I got a bridge pickup right here, it is the bridge one you want isn't it?".

The significant part being that he could get one in for me if I like, which seems to suggest that they aren't discontinued after all!

I love this pickup, and I'm sure you, like myself, would recommend it to anybody who wants a high-output humbucker. Bollocks to Seymour Duncan......Bill Lawrence is about 2 3rds the price and sounds gorgeous.

Matt Martinez, god I'm envious...you might be going to an EJ show. I wish i could get an opportunity to see him live! Well, have a great time if you do go!
Ovation1, thanks for the Guitar Wars CD/DVD link! Limited edition....ahh, I'm gonna have to commit myself and buy it pretty sharp-ish, otherwise I'll probably miss the only opportunity to catch Nuno on DVD!

and yeah, Dr Vai is a great dresser, hehe, I love the 'Dr Love' thing on his jacket!!

Mick87, thanks for the AT info - yeah I agree that it will surely be priced about the same as a JS1000. It's basically a customised S-series isn't it? Ibanez don't have to use special routing-patterns for the guitar like they do with the Jem and the JS, so it would be criminal for it to be more expensive.
PhryDom, hahaha, I cracked up laughing when I read what you posted about that guitar painted with a roller! A guitar with an Artex finnish....what could be better?! that must get uncomfortable if you play with short sleeves - it would make your fore-arms itch like hell!

Congrats on your Lasagne!
