G3 London, the verdict:

It was a kick-ass show. It was a lot better than Bournemouth. I could see everything and the sound in the Royal Albert Hall is amazing. After the good sound at the Toto show on monday night, my confidence was rebuilt about G3. The sound crew doing the house sound at RAH definitely know what they're doing.

Robert Fripp was excellent. I really enjoyed his set, and was thoroughly p*ss*d off at the ignorant, narrow-minded bastards who were shouting abuse. One of the guys who went with us to the show took binoculars, which we kept passing along the line, so I spent some time watching what Robert was doing.
Vai's set was as good as before, only the sound was better. Billy was a little too quiet in the mix, but overall it still sounded nice. The setlist was unchanged, and it was nice watching Steve and Tony properly jamming onstage, they really started improvising together for a minute or so, which was intense. In this set it was nice watching Tony and Jeremy especially, and watching Steve's feet when it came to changing effects - he was certainly busy with the pedal board!
Joe's set was good. I still wasn't too sure about the choice of setlist, but there were some cool choices in there, especially Flying In A Blue Dream and Cool #9. The sound was so much better, and it was interesting to watch through the binoculars what the others were doing, especially Jeff! The band seemed to be having a better time than they were in Bournemouth, and were definitely getting a more warm response.
The jam was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed 'Red' this time. And Joe was even allowed to introduce Robert at the beginning of the set! Robert was kicking ass, and yet again, played possibly the best solos. I had to laugh at the people who had been so dismissive of him earlier in the show, cause at this point he was making them look very stupid.

Joe was also on form and seemed to be having a great time, as did Matt. Vai played well on the Jam, but I didn't think he was the best of the three on that set. However, there were some really nice ideas on there, especially with Joe and Steve harmonising their feedback, a very cool routine, it must be said!

So yeah, overall, excellent. I don't think there was anything about G3's performance I didn't like

Delfino, yeah I reckon a DW UK tour would be cool, but you're right....it's not gonna happen any time soon. he'd also need more then 7 tunes to play for a gig! hehe. I've listened to the album 2 or 3 times, I think "The Ghost OF Denmark St." is my favourite at the moment!

Ovation1, yeah a big-ass bank loan and a move to London is very tempting! haha
Dragonchild, thanks for putting up mari's pictures!
marimariSRV, sh*t....are you a pro photographer? these are nice! thanks!

also, thanks for the e-mail, very funny! Especially the thing about "playing the back nine". haha!

anibur, nice joke! well actually, less of a joke and more of a disturbingly good point, but it's still kinda funny!

marimariSRV, yeah hangin out with Igor kicked ass! I hope you like his stuff - did you download any of the mp3 samples off guitar9.com?

I just picked up your mail, awesome photos! Could you do something for me; those photos you sent....could you put them in a zip file and mail them again, cause as it is I can see smaller versions (of most of them) within the mail but downloading is going to be a nightmare. especially with my 14K connection! hehe.

Ovation1, haha, London does look better on paper than Dorset, especially to other brits, cause everyone here in the Uk thinks that Dorset-ers are farmers. Unfortunately, my situation is no-win, caude I can't say "well actually i'm not from Dorset, im from..." cause I come from Essex, which is one step worse than Dorset! hehehe
mowlie, I was saying the sound at the Royal Albert was better than at the BIC in Bournemouth! sorry, I have a knack of not making things clear! hehe. Yeah the Toto sound was fantastic!

marimariSRV, assuming you have a version of winzip on your pc, it'll be pretty easy. Just select the files (in this case photos) that you want to zip and right-click the selection. In the menu box that appears, will be an "add to zip" option, which is what you need.

winzip will open itself, and the top corner will have a dialogue box asking you where you want to put the zipped archive when it's done, and by default, it will select the same directory as the one you took the photos from.

Below that will be the 'action' option, and by default it will be set to "add and replace files" which is fine...leave it like that. Below that will be the compression setting, which will be set to normal. Since they're photos, they're big files, so select "maximum" from the menu. Maximum takes the longest to compress, but it's most economical, especially for mailing. The other options and attributes below can be left as they are, then just click "add" at the top.

By the way, i'm basing this off winzip 8.0 or something, not quite the newest, so the arrangement of buttons may have changed, but it's probably the same!

Have fun playing with zips! hehe

oh and also (hehe, sorry, I keep remembering stuff) you should work on the CD-writing software next cause you really ought to get all your (amazing) photos on to CD! Do you know what software your cd writer uses, is it Nero? if it's Nero, I can help with that!

Ovation1, hehe, nice one dude, I'll get a photo of the scratch-plate for you! I'll probably get some silver mount-board tomorrow and i'll do it then. I'll let you know when it's done tho!

Ovation1, hehe, I know what you mean. I haven't listened to EJ for a while cause I been listening to Joe loads lately. I put Venus Isle on the other night and listened to Lonely In The Night in real disbelief! I've heard this song countless times, but it still gets me! I love it.

Rock on bro, and definitely Eric Johnson for G3 again!

mowlie, bizarre indeed! So that company were allowed to do the house sound at the Royal Albert? that's interesting....maybe the acoustics of the RAH are so good it'd take a hyperactive school-kid with A-D-D to screw it up! hehe
marimariSRV, no problem! yeah it'd be easier to help out if I did live nearby! hehe. What do you want to do with the CD's, do you want to copy them or compile your own compilation of photos or what?
Master Yoda, HUGHES & KETTNER! if you're into ebay, you should look for H&K stuff on there, sometimes you'll find a dirt-cheap head, a tri-amp if you're lucky, and it's so worth going for! I kinda wish i'd gone for H&K instead of Legacy, they sound so good!
alexandre, good to see you had an awesome time at the G3 show, amigo! What did you think of Robert Fripp's solo and Jam set? I mean, i read what you wrote about it....but did you like it? I'm intrigued! I personally thought it was really good. I bet you're still hyped about that meet and greet?!
michelle, I don't think you should feel the need to apologise for sharing these kinda things. It's pretty interesting, and i'm sure a lot of us here have some kind of idea of the sort of feelings you're talking about. It's odd how bad memories and feelings can be triggered in such a way that can really take you by surprise.....I've had the same thing with bad memories of my dad's death (a year ago today as it happens) when afterwards i've thought "what the f*ck was that about? what am I getting upset for?!"

take it easy!

civgeek, tuner gripes? erm, they're always too sensitive to the strings you're not tuning, and not sensitive to the one you are tuning! hehe
Clarky, regards pulling the e string off the side of the fretboard, I saw Vai do it in the show in Holland! Surprised me a bit, that one, but then I remembered, if there's a sound to be gotten from a guitar, Vai has done it, and if he hasn't done it, he's just about to! Cool sound tho....wish I could make it sound good. hehe

Master Yoda, no probs! I tried both Engl and H&K. Both are excellent, but I am kinda partial to the H&K's no bullshit/no fuss manner. The Engl heads sound good, but a little more processed, whereas the H&K sounds a little more ballsy, if a little pissed off. hehe. It's all down to personal opinion, but if you go for either of those I'd say you'd be doing a very wise thing!

regards your second post (your rant), dude! i mean....DUDE! Two little girls spitting on you and your mate is not a cool thing to happen. I don't agree with what you said about "we couldn't hit them, they were girls" cause if people want equality that's what they should get, but it's unfortunate that they were young cause they would probably have gone running to the nearest pig and got you done for abusing a minor or some sh*t like that.

The important thing is in the question you asked - how were they brough up to think that this kind of behavious is okay? That is something I really want to know. Kids these days worry me!

and finally, do you think you could e-mail me that Productive Practice article too? It sounds useful!

airman_siro@yahoo.co.uk

Clarky, haha, I feel wise now. I'm not quite up to the 'aristotle of music' standards, but it's one more rung up the ladder!

by the way, I love your take on how to deal with annoying little girls/kids....haha, classic!

Tmann_70, congrats on getting that JS10th, what a cool guitar. The push-pull pot on the volume position serves as a high-pass-filter, while the one on the tone is for coil splitting. The high-pass-filter is built so that you don't loose the higher frequencies when you roll the volume back, a very useful tool, especially with Joe's pickups. It's not so bad with Evolutions cause they seem to give out their high tone quite comfortably at different volumes, but you'll really notice it in a JS.
String G, I have an RGT42 and I want to get rid of it. It's okay, the high-register access is particularly note-worthy, but that Ibanez standard pickups are, needless to say, pretty crappy, the bridge is kinda lame too, and it's a heavy guitar. I don't know that I'd recommend it.....try an S Series instead, that's my advice!
mowlie, I heard vai saying something about the RAH acoustics - "it seems to sound good but aparrently it's no good at all for recording" The acoustic-improving devices hanging from the roof are amazing, like massive mushrooms the wrong way up!
Ovation1, yeah I'd definitely agree that Venus Isle is a take-you-on-a-journey album. About me noticing the post - I had my EJ-Comment-Tracking-System switched on! hehe

Amen on Eric Johnson for G3 again!

Ovation1, dude, you're into Ritchie Kotzen, right? I bet you could recommend me some of his stuff. I was listening to "So many notes, so little time" on Gregg Bissonette's "Submarine" record, and thought I bet I can't play any of that. I was right. I mean, there's a few slow phrases in there which I managed, but anything from moderate to fast is beyond me, not because of the speed, but the note selection. He does strange new things with arpeggios, hehe. What a genius tho....when I start earning again I want to start an RK collection!

mowlie, hahahahaha, that's hilarious, the thing about Magic Mushroom addicts in the RAH! hehehe They'd go nuts trying to reach the cieling!
marimariSRV, EJ: Venus Isle is indeed so beautiful. If that's not a good indicator of why we need to see Eric Johnson for G3 again then I don't know what is! hehe. No disrespect to Robert Fripp is intended tho, cause this tour is great and he Kicks ASS!! Well I thought he was good anyway!
SOTD, Astral Fishing ~ Andy Timmons. It's such a satisfying rhythm and solo :)
Guns don't kill people. Bulletts kill people. ~ Chris Rock is both funny and wise! he's onto something tho, putting bullett prices up to $5000 a shot would undoubtedly ensure that nobody gets "caught in the crossfire".
OCPS470, thanks for the mail. That guitar looks well nice, and now it's done I can see how compact it seems to be. I may be wrong, but it certainly looks compact, judging the width of the neck and size of the pickups relative to the size of the body. And that Ernie-Ball-style 4 tuners on one side, 2 on the other headstock layout.......brilliant!

Hope you're enjoying it and finding out about it's various different characteristics. How are you getting on with that switching system? Very nice indeed!

splinter cell, "if you think otherwise you have a serious problem". No, that's just called a different opinion. I personally think Vai is probably technically the best, but Nuno Bettencourt is my favourite rhythm player, and Eric Johnson is my favourite overall. I like Joe's technique, he's really developed the whole legato thing to a standard most people couldn't fathom without reading how he does it.
Delfino, weird, I was about to say the same thing! Where is Trutina? Bil, whatever you're up to, hope you're okay. You'd better not be playing online pool! haha

Cuthbert, it was Chris Rock who came up with the idea, so have a go at him about it! I just happen to think it's a good one. And yeah you're right, making gun-control laws tighter doesn't stop criminals who like guns from liking guns, but it does make it more difficult for them.
OCPS470, damn, sounds nice man! That's so useful that you can get such a variety of tones from it, it's pretty unique! This thing about Peter's guitars sharing the characteristic of holding their tone, and being able to get a really clean, subtle pick-attack from them......how do you think he's managed that? It's definitely a good feature. In my opinion, the less pedals and effects and compressors and crap you have to put in your setup to take out unwanted noise, the better.
Ovation1, thanks buddy! What a great overview of Richie Kotzen, i'm well prepared now. It will unfortunately have to wait a while, but when I have some money to throw at CD's again (it can't come soon enough!) i'll be investing in some RK records. I want to get some of Pablo Gilberto's solo stuff as well, cause the songs he did on Guitar Wars kicked ass. I'm assuming that things like Viking Kong, Down To Mexico are from Paul's solo work?
alexandre, yeah I think I did see your last post, although I don't remember which was which!! hehe, It was either about G3 or your website! Damn, my memory is bad.....what is a "962" anyway?! hehe, only kidding. Regards to you too amigo!
Dev, I've never seen anyone write like that before....I mean, replacing al their punctuation with "fuckin". I'm sure Joe is gonna be well impressed by you! Best thing with Joe's board is to go with the flow, and you'll get along with everybody. maybe you should post your comments on Kirk Hammett over at Metallica's website. Just a thought!
I wouldn't say MacDonald's. Unless you really want that Sperm-MacFlurry, or that Syst-MacBurger. I'll explain further if anyone really wants to know, but the idea that Maccy D's food has been found to contain both spunk and systs, should be sufficient.
michelle, glad you're enjoying Dave's album. I was well surprised by it, considering it's a Debut album. It's really, really good, and fresh too. keep on rockin'!
StringG, mischievous, hope you guys are enjoying the show! bearing time difference in mind, it will have started 35 minutes ago, which means you're now watching Vai's killer set......have fun!

I keep meaning to ask, does anybody here play Carvin guitars? I know somebody does but I can't remember who! hehe. Anyway, I want opinions......are they well built, what do they sound like, what do they play like, are they comfortable and are they reliable? From what I've seen on Carvin's site, they look like they're well built!
TASTEY, haha, that's a hilarious story!
alexandre, ah yes, thanks I remember now! hehe. Yeah I was pleased to read that you were not one of the people saying Fripp sucked and is crap and they need someone fast for G3! You have a good weekend too bro :-)
Adrianorb, Delfino, yeah the McDonald's thing is pretty sick ain't it? I almost choked when I heard those stories, it's just plain wrong!
The Prez, I dunno....batman was good and everything, but for a totally different side I'd have to say The Crow was the best. I love that movie, Brandon Lee kicked ass. I didn't realise there was a new Batman movie coming out soon! Any idea when we're going to see Aliens Vs Predator?

Austin, thanks for your Carvin input. haha, hasn't changed his strings since he got it used 2 years ago? ouch!

OCPS470, yeah a tight neck-joint is always a good thing, and I'm not surprised to hear you say it helps sustain. Interesting point about angled headstocks......I'd not made the note that they're different to straight, but now you mention it, that's where the sound difference lies! Fascinating
The Prez, can you tell me more about the carvin you played? :-P it's kinda hard for me to just walk down to the nearest guitar store and try one, cause they don't sell them in the UK. There's one, and only one, Carvin dealer, about 1hr45 driving time from my house, and to my knowledge, they only sell Carvin amps and a couple of guitars/basses. Maybe only the amps!! So yeah, I want opinions!
Delfino, get the SA1260. I really regret getting the RGT instead of an S Series I looked at.
DCK, what?!? all Ibanez will be made in Korea? No I hadn't heard that, but it doesn't surprise me at all. Ibanez are rapidly going down hill......like, Herman Maier-skiing-in-Venghen kind of rapid. (i'm well aware of the probable spelling errors I just made....my apologies!)
mischeivous, sorry to hear about the little sh*ts who were disturbing the peace at the show.
Ovation1, I didn't realise those 2 songs were racer X material. I guess I was thrown off cause Paul's vocal style sounds so different!! hehe. Regards Racer X, I still love B.R.O. Kiler tune!

I'll let you know when I finally get some Richie Kotzen music......it'll be a while, but I'm sure i'll be wildly excited about it! hehe

By the way, intereseting what you say about that TWA 747 explosion. I do believe that there's a lot of occasions where news is fabricated to pull the wool over the eyes of the general public. Landing on the moon? I dunno, i'm split on it. It takes an awful lot of information and processing of info to get 3 people from earth, to the surface of the moon, and back again, yet when it was done, they had the computing power of a pocket calculator.

Now we have home PC's that are millions of times more powerful, but they crash and die dramatically every other time we use them. That said, i've been on a Plane ride from the UK to California.....I know that's a long flight, and there's an awful lot of opportunity for the Artificial Stupidity to f*ck things up, but it's always been hitch-free. Planes seem reliable, so why can't extra-powerful, extra-long-range planes be just the same.

I dunno, I'm a cynic, but I do think people stood on the moon, and I also think flight/space-technology is far more advanced than we are allowed to know

Anybody else watch the Formula Schumacher Grand Prix today? Wow....a McLaren came second! God this sport is getting boring, although the footage of the `promo drive through the middle of London looked cool, if a little scary!

Delfino, the RGT in it's standard form is just not particularly nice. Like I said before it's heavy, and the bridge kinda sucks, although mine is the old Floyd Rose Rip-Off, the Lo-TRS II, not the new Edge Pro which is aparrently just as bad. The standard pickups sound pitiful, and for a thru-neck construction, it's resonance is relatively below-par. My RGT actually sounds pretty sweet, but that's cause I put the Bil Lawrence pickup in the bridge and dropped the tuning a half-step, so it sounds like Nuno's Washburn.

I dunno, I just feel that the S Series is a slightly more thought-about guitar. The 22-fret neck is nice, a little more open than the 24 that is standard on every RG, and the S Series gives you the option of an H-S-S pickup config, which is the most versatile. That's why I regret it so much - If I'd have got something with the H-S-S layout I could have dropped a really variable pickup set in there and it'd be much more useful.

get an S Series with a Wilkinson-type trem, put the right DiMarzios in there and you've basically got an Andy Timmons model!

Ovation1, Y.R.O. sounds like fun! Does Paul dress up in a fat-suit when he plays it?! hehe, I'm sorry, it just had to be said. ehem. Damn right, if anyone is gonna play classical heavy on guitar, it should be Pablo, cause he's excellent at it!

Mater Yoda, hehe, yeah I know.....obviously, you choose whatever you want. Although I would say, if were to buy, for example, a Mesa Boogie, and then try an H&K, i'd probably find myself going "shiiiiit!"

Of course, it's dependent on what kind of tone you want, but the classic H&K distortion is the sort that you can't help but grin at!

Peavey seems cool tho, especially for rhythm tone - Joe's new tone is great when he plays rhythm!

Greyfox88, Igor Belsky has done an amazing two-handed tapping song called "Forgotten Planet" on his new album Equilibrium. It's a lot like The Forgotten (Part 1) and Midnight, and I can assure you you'd love it. Only problem is, you can only hear it by buying the CD straight from Igor cause he hasn't given it to any online suppliers yet.

JustJack, not a "Will & Grace" fan are you, by any chance?! hehe. No problem on the heads up for Igor, i'm really glad to hear you say "you're sold"! Igor is a great guy and as you heard, a great musician, and I'd really like to see him do well for himself. Out of interest, which sample did you listen to? if it was Eastern Flier then you now know what I keep going on about. If it was something else, then check out Eastern Flier now! hehe. Laters
for anyone else interested in the above; http://www.guitar9.com/roadtested.html
civgeek, that's cool to hear the JS1000 sounded good through H&K. I've been unsure as to what that might sound like, so it's good to know it works! The last H&K I tried was a little Edition Blue 30 watt practice amp and it f*ck*n rocks man! I want one, just for recording raw-sounding rhythm stuff. I tried that with my RG with the Bill Lawrence in, so it sounded very Nuno!
IceZer, yeah both are married with family. haha, that's hilarious, on them being married *together*. hehehehe
Dev, it's not too smart to post a message on here telling someone to "stop wasting their energies on this forum". I mean, surely that is exactly what you're doing? You're definitely wasting your energies if you keep up your confrontational sh*t the way you are at the moment.....it's disgraceful, and it's not going to make you welcome.

Don't spend your time assuming that you know everything you need to know about a person, their history or their experience..........you'll just make yourself look stupid!

IceZer, Yay-Yo Gakk; Steve recorded hours of his infant son's baby-talk. What you hear on Ya-Yo Gakk is all random noises that his son (I think it was Julian) was making, and Steve took the bits that sounded funniest/most quirky/most useable, then wrote a tune surrounding those sounds, and mirrored them exactly with guitar! There's the story of that one.

TASTEY, i never thought of Lily, but awww, what a cute name to give someone!
ravickvan, you have not made a revelation i'm afraid. every 15th or 20th new member who joins t2j bitches about the subject matters addressed.

You'll grow to like it, it's cool, and Joe likes it. He referrs to it himself as a kind of "free-for-all", and if you get to meet Joe you will quickly realise that he's normal like the rest of us, and is quite happy to discuss stuff that isn't about guitars. Hell, he probably gets sick of guitar-talk, I know I do!

Happy Birthday Joe! I know i'm a little early, but that's better than late, right?! hehe. Have a cool day!

wow, my work-supervisor (and good friend) from my last job has loaned me the use of his JS1000 for a whole week! KICK ASS!

I did my first analytical tests this evening, comparing it in various regimes against my Jem. I gotta say, I love the JS! I wish I'd bought one, it's SO COMFORTABLE!

However, I feel like i'm gonna break it, the body is so sculpted i don't wanna hurt it. Opposed to that, the Jem body feels more sturdy and it's bridge more compliant to abuse, but it's neck feels more vulnerable, and I love the thickness of the JS neck and the frettboard radius.

This is one area which presents a massively noticeable difference - the radius on the JS makes it easier for me to play accurately. That is to say, I can "wing it" but make less mistakes than I would on the Jem. The curvature of the 'board makes spacing nicer, and I love the openness of the 22-frett neck. The upper register is so much easier to flow into than the cramped 24.

That said, the Jem is superior for shred style. These are characteristics that start to come through in the electronics too. My initial verdict is that the JS has the better body and neck, and better wiring but the Jem has better electronics. The Jem is better suited to shred and most noticeably, sweeping, whilst the JS is much better suited to legato and tapping than the Jem.

Although I like the tone of the Jem, I love how easily you can pull a massive variety of harmonics out of the JS, and it all comes naturally.

The JS seems more controllable, and so far i've found it easy to get some very 'Joe' tones out of it.

If I had to recommend one of these to someone who could not afford both, I'd say get the JS.

I'm sure I'll discover more to the JS in the next week, so my feelings may change, but as it currently stands, I think i'm playing the wrong guitar.

The reason i've shared all this? I dunno, I find it kind of interesting, and it's not often you get a fair comparison between JS and Jem!

OCPS470, yeah I'd agree with you, that the S is somewhere between JS and Jem. I like the width and depth of the JS neck, it's much more relaxing for me to play......a lot, of course, is down to technique, and hand size. I'm almost entirely self-taught, so much technique is not as good as it should be, and I have fairly small hands.

After making these initial comparisons, I went back to my GIO. It's a cheap-as-sh*t guitar, but the body is great. It's curved across the top, it's more comfortable than the Jem. All it really needs is a re-fret, and I'd like to put a wilkison-type trem on it. I'd perhaps put an Evo in the bridge then a Virtual Vintage or something in the neck single-coil position.

To start with, I found the JS pickups lacking in some character, but I quickly got accustomed to their tone and characteristics, and found them more consistent and predictable, hence easier to control.

Ovation1, hehe, yeah never forget the monkey-grip! A JS with a monkey-grip routed out of it. That would look well entertaining, but I doubt it'd be as strong! I think the wide spacing of the upper register on a 22-frett neck is itself enough to make the difference from a Legato guitar or a shred guitar.

In applying the things I noticed to my GIO, i've found that it would be quite good at both! It's spacious enough to keep a relaxed, open hand rather than tying your fingers in knots, but it's flat enough to sweep and string-skip easily. I could cut a monkey-grip in the GIO I suppose! hehe

JustJack, excelent, i'm glad to hear you ordered Road Tested! For your info, if you really love it and you decide you want his two new albums, then you can mail Mr Belsky and he'll give you the address (in London) to send a cheque to. This is actually pretty cool, cause it means he's getting all the money for the 2 CD's, rather than loosing 75% of it to middle-men!

Enjoy Road Tested!

Ovation1, I used my GIO (and Jem) in a Rock & Roll/Grease tribute gig last night. The GIO was great.......when I get the funds, i'll definitely go to work on it. That's surprising you've never seen a JS over there, I wonder why?!?

Warm regards to you and your wife, sensai. My condolences on your loss. Take it easy bro!

civgeek, see this is what confuses me - the JS and Jem are meant to have the same thin neck on them, but the JS definitely feels deeper, front to back. I know it's a little wider, side to side, or at least it seems that way. Maybe it's all just about that curved profile. I have small hands, but I find the bigger-feeling JS neck easier to use. I don't like the way everything can get so cramped on the Jem and RG necks.
dragonchild, hehe, that spier was a Dweller On The Threshold! hehe.

Damn, I think that was my first Satch-based joke. It was pitiful as well, i'm sorry! This is not cool news!

marimariSRV, if you have winzip, the zips will be easy to open. You can then use the 'extract' function, which will ask you where you want extract the files to, for example "C:/my music", and it's as easy as that!

I don't know where Plant and Page grew up.....i'm a bit young for them to be honest! hehe. Well you went to London, so you've definitely been around te area they used to roam......they would have done all the major cities, England being so small and all!

Joeman9, hope you're okay man....procedures like that are never nice

civgeek, those numbers indicate that the JS is 1mm bigger, in general, than the Jem, which will account for a vast amount. You'd be surprised at the difference a mil makes! And yes, the radius definitely makes a difference.

Help! You guys who know about amps, valves, etc, my amp has 9 valves in it. There's 3 pre-amp valves, one reverb valve, one "power-driver" valve, and 4 power valves. The 4 power valves are Marshall EL34's, whilst the other 5 are 12AX7's, 3 russian, 2 groove tubes.

The 3 russians aren't glowing! I dunno if they should be, but they're not. Here's the thing - my amp doesn't sound any different to the way it always has done. That said, if I turn the volume up, even just half way, it hisses quite noticeably, and that's not something I'd expect. It's certainly not that golden silence you get from a Mesa Boogie when you have your guitar volume wound off. And the reverb has always been pathetic, but if the problem has always been there then I obviously wouldn't know any different!

This all started cause the channel was switching wildly between the clean and dirty channels for no aparrent reason. It could perhaps be a dodgy lead in the footswitch - after I unplugged the footswitch it didn't do it again, but that could be coinsidence. Anyway, when this odd switching happened a few times, I looked in the back of the amp and couldn't see 9 orange glowing valves, only 6.

How do yu know when a valve is burned out? does the whole tube burn black, or is it just the top where the reflective part usually is?

Delfino, Steve is 3 years younger than Joe. Joe is 3 years younger then Eric Johnson. and for point of interest, Dave Weiner is 27 and I'd imagine Jeremy is about the same. T-Mac has gotta be 30-something, and Billy is more like Steve's age, I think.

DCK, cheers dude, I didn't realise that they don't all have to glow all the time. It's interesting, I took the 3 sovteks out and had a look, and one definitely seemed to be a bit more black on the reflector than the others did. I swapped the positions of 2 of the Sovteks when I put them back in, and got much more reverb! If there was a problem with the reverb tube, and in the swapping-over I had put it in place of the pre-amp or powerdriver, that would have great effect on the channel tone, right? It didn't....

The other thing that confuses me, I would have thought the 3 pre-amp tubes would be the same, but no, 2 of them are Groove Tubes whilst the 3rd in the line is a Sovtek.

civgeek, cheers! yeah that's something I looked for - a smell, and there wasn't any. The EL34s seem fine, which is good news!
deathbyjellybeans, yeah I'm discussing my Carvin Legacy and it's quirks with people right now....see above.

I have to say, it's a lovely amp, and for the money you'd pay for a Marshall, you can't go wrong. I had a Marshall DSL before it but returned it after a couple of weeks cause it sounded lame, and replaced it with a Legacy. It is a very, very warm amp, on both channels, but it sounds great.

I definitely recommend at least trying one, although if I had the money I'd probably go with a Hughes & Kettner Tri-Amp (MkII).

OCPS470, cool man, I knew you'd have a decent amount to report on the matter.....great advice! I'm pleased to hear you say it sounds like there's "a bit of a mish mosh of tubes in there", cause that's what I thought. I'm wondering if it was fitted out with Groove Tubes when it left the US, or fitted out with all Sovteks, and then some had broken in transit by the time it reached Nevada Music in Portsmouth, where I got it, so they replaced half of the tubes with whatever they on the shelf!

It's an odd problem, cause if those 3 Sovtek 12AX7lp's were buggered, there wouldn't be any reverb. I think i'll go check out eurotubes!

Thanks guys!

Jazzy x, I dunno man, I don't think i'd go tapping my amps' valves with my penis.....I'd get burned! Then again, it's always good to be able to report that your penis is responsible for a high-pitched squealing noise! ....I think!
DCK, the valve tapping resulted in no crazy noises. Although they're obviously f*ck*d - I had both volum settings on the amp dialled completely off, and the bastard was still hissing! I got a good response from Bob at eurotubes.com, so I shall probably get 5 new JJ tubes to replace the mixture of 12AX7's in there at the moment. I'll leave the EL34's for now cause they work, but I'll eventually put some new ones in, probably JJ E34L's.
IceZer, cool website and photos, congrats to your sister! I take it that's you and another sister who were the bridesmaids? Regardless, you looked lovely. Blue is a cool colour!
SOTD....hmm, what'll it be?!? The Forgotten (Part 2) ~ Joe Satriani.
happy half-k to me! hehe
