WTF? Did Neil Brocklebank's site get put up just for you? Last time I checked msn said 'Neil whatlebank?'. There's no site under that name, dumb-ass! hehehe.

Cheers, your post means I finally get to hear what he sounds like.

Can anybody tell me, what guitar is Joe holding (and playing) on the cover of and soundtracks of the 'Not Of This Earth' album?

ah, cheers Matthew. so he never recorded with it? Did he have the JS then?

I haven't listened to 'NOTE' (hehe) for ages........I forgot how cool it was.

Neil Brocklebank...........well, he was described in UK guitar magazines and by Maverick guitars as 'The defining middle-ground between Vai and Satriani'.

cr*p. oop, excuse me. didn't mean to swear.

I must admit, I have only downloaded the MP3 samples from the site, which, I concurr, are good but not original. I almost fell asleep listening, but couldn't due to the fact the timing sounds..........erratic. It all sounds a a bit nuts, and like he's trying to prove something.

This is the difference - Joe, Steve, Eric, Luke, they all seem to be able to make a shredomatic solo sound like it's meant to be there, like it's there for a reason, not just to say "I CAN SHRED. kiss it, b*tch"

These MP3 demo's make me want to do one thing about his album - ignore it.

Much like Igor Belsky, in all the respects I discussed above!

hey Sarshar, sorry but none of those guitars sound like a JS!

Only a JS sounds like one. That said, you could get pretty close by using an ergodyne or maybe and S series and putting Joe's pickups (DiMarzio Fred and PAF Pro) on it.

Also think about amps and pedals - you could have a JS 1000 and it would sound totally different to Joe's if you use different amps and effects to him.

Go for your own tone.........it's okay to try for something similar, but you'll get more out of your own sound. Mine is a half-way between Eric Johnson and Joe's sound on the new record. Although I use the smash box when I want something crude and shreddy.

Emulating someone elses tone is not easy. How much is a JS where you live? if it's vastly expensive, you could always import one.

Hope that helps.

Ordered my Secret Jewel Box last night. can't wait! Ordered EJ's 'Souvenir' record too............anybody know if it's good?
Joe, when did you stop teaching at Berklee? I wish i was of that era - I would happily have (somehow) raised 20 grand to go and be your tutee for a year!

yo Crispin, about Cornford:

Joe used Cornford heads when he came to the UK last year. I dunno if he used them for the whole SBM tour, but he certainly used them here in the UK.

Cornford got a bit tetchy tho, cause he used their heads with Marshall 4x12 cabs, so all you could really see on stage (unless you looked closely) was the name 'Marshall', so Cornford felt they were loosing out on the free advertising they deserved.

Yeah Joe may well own 'every amp they made' or something like that, but then he probably owns every Marshall you could point a stick at, and no doubt has a bunch of other Vintage heads, like Fenders and stuff.

Joe is definitely the most prestigious player of the Cornford Hellcat valve-head.............I don't know the names of anybody else who uses them.

I guess he stuck with the Marshall CAB because the Cornford ones are only 10-inch speakers, and are different to the Celestions he'll be used to.

Can't remember who it was who reponded to my question about EJ's 'Souvenir' album, but.........Thanks man! That's cool. I'm sure it'll be ace, but I like to know that I have bought something highly-rated! hehe
The thing with Joe missing the deadline - d*mn funny guys! ROFL

Matrix: Reloaded was, in my opinion, good but didn't compete with the first one. It lacked something, including a good soundtrack.

The Matrix had defineable action scenes with interesting bits of storyline in-between, like 'The Lobby Scene' and 'The Subway Station', parts of the film that were so well incorporated into the entirity of the movie that they have earned respect in their own right, and to most movie-goers, if you say the words 'The Lobby Scene' they know exactly what you're talking about.

There wasn't anything really like that in Part 2 - it all merges together more and you can't remember what happened where. although the bike chase was too cool!

Serak The Preparer, cheers man. Yeah that was me that said I think Lonely In The Night has one of the best solos ever written! If you remember many other things rightly like you remembered that one, you're going to be a very intellectual dude!
Yeah you could probably get you a Joe shirt off ebay, or just go to one of hig gigs! I got mine after the London show last summer, but I've seen many bits of JS merchandise on Ebay before. Worth checking out

regards G8 - Igor Belsky for Russia. Gotta give it to him - he's technically adept, if you like that kinda thing.

Pierre Nensusan would make an interesting twist to the show for a French contender. I dunno about a Chinese guitarist.....

Regards Matrix Reloaded - yeah as a title all by itself it wouldn't be cool, but as the middle part of three I think it's going to be great. I can't wait for the grand finale. It's gonna be so ace!

Hey Joe, did you see both Matrix movies? You like 'em?

Anybody else got Racer X's 'Technical Difficulties'? I love Paul Gilbert's cover of that Bach piece - anybody know which piece it is, or is from? I started having a go at The Queen Of Sheeba and Pachabel's Cannon tonight. bloody good fun!

BTP, there's a few good sound-editing suites open to you, and the two best names to look for are CuBase and Wave Lab.

Try to get new versions of anything, and I know they're really expensive, so I wouldn't be surprised if you get yourself a hot copy, but I'm not putting ideas in your head about easily found websites where those of us with DSL can easily download a cracked full programme.

I'm not putting these ideas in your head cause I don't have DSL and therefor can't give an honest bit of advice. hehehe.

CuBase and Wave Lab are both professional programmes so they take a while to master, but it's not difficult - take about half an hour - to work out how to take out a solo part, slow it down, repeat bits, do anything you want with it, raise the pitch if it's not at normal tuning pitch.

Hope that helps, at least a little! Have fun. Oh, forgot to mention, it takes some learning, but you can also just-about seperate the base track from the drum track, from the lead track, and so on, or at least copy it a few times over, amplifying different tracks, so you have something as good as a backing track. nice!

BTP, yeah he's right, the official books are what you're after. Every one of Joe's records is also avaiable as a book in standard notation and TAB form.............Strange Beautiful Music book isn't released yet. It's honestly the best way to go - spend a bit of money on amazon and get the exact thing with all the secrets and problems solved!

I'm sure I saw the LISF title under 'books' somewhere. I think it's available but I'm not sure.

Pastel Black, yes I think you are the only one. In fact i think it's kind of embarrassing that you should suggest such a thing.

Of course, we are all entitled to our own opinion, but I think Kenny-Wayne is well-deserving of the G3 appearance he had, and bear in mind that every G3 guest is a personal invitee of Joe and Steve, so saying that Kenny-Wayne shouldn't have been there, is saying that you think Joe and Steve made a bad judgement and is, in that sense, kind of insulting.

But don't worry about it, I'm sure they won't be offended. It's just better to diss people they haven't yet invited!

Anybody got any opinions on Seymour Duncan pickups, notably the '59 humbuckers, and the 'vintage stack' singles?

Mr Nick, in all seriousness, it shouldn't be as hard as you may think to get funds.

I know it's not easy - I got into the HND course at Brighton Institute Of Modern Music but couldn't afford it. Also, they only gave me a month to raise a grand deposit! So I didn't go.

Anyway, if you don't mind me asking, how old are you? When did you leave school, and did you apply to UCAS? I left school a year ago without making a UCAS application so I basically have to pay FULL fees on anything I do, which sucks.

Your parish/town/city (wherever you live) may well have a grant scheme set up for the support of gifted individuals with great potential, which will usually pay the bulk of the fees.

You could always look for sponsorship from somebody famous or a big company in the music industry, like Kerrang! and other such groups.

This is the shorter version of what I just wrote: Don't loose hope!

Hehe, I've been told a number of times I ought to be applying to Berklee, and I would, if I thought there was any remote possibility of me being able to lay my hands on 25 grand to go there for a year.

If people are so keen to promote others with musical talent and great potential in the industry, why do they make it so bloody hard to get the briefest sniff at?

I think I saw that Seville gig video you're talking about on ebay, but I didn't buy it cause I like to only go for things that are official. Speaking of which, I got EJ's 'Souvenir' record this morning - 'tis pretty cool, but you do get the feeling it's a filler to keep us going until the new studio album comes out. Can't wait for that!

Do The Stu, yeah fair point. I think it's cool, and it's nice to have the full EJ collection.......it looks good in the CD rack! But yeah, there's some nice tunes on there too.

Phrydom, that's a fair point too. I did what you said - instead of going to Brighton Institute, I put the money into buying my Carvin Legacy, so I have a really good setup now. I think I'd get more out of spending a similar amount on private tuition that I would on tuition at a place like BIMM.

I still wish I could afford to go to Berklee! Nobody leaves there as a bad musician!

Mr Nick, the nail has a head, and you just hit it! hehe. you said "it's like music doesn't matter". It doesn't! Nobody gives a flying f@#k about modern 'popular' music.

Apart from Berklee.

yeah Phrydom, that is probably what I'll do. I went to check out the music-oriented courses at Bournemouth today and came to the same conclusion as I did with Brighton.

I think I'd rather work full time, and have two or three private lessons a week for a year. Maybe one lesson in music theory and the other, or other two, in practical stuff. That way I'd get a good foundation for something more advanced - degree or whatever.

Yeah Cliffs Of Dover is still considered EJ's trademark number, but I slightly prefer Zap. I love Cliffs Of Dover - it's an awesome tune - but Zap, especially the G3 CD version, has more of an edge to it, especially with Brannen Temple's drumming. what a dude!

whether Yngwie, Joe and Steve are frineds or not, you gotta bare in mind that when they all get together to jam at the end, Yngwie J is gonna be in a bit of a pickle, cause you can't easily chuck a harmonic minor over a classic bit of blues-rock.

I'd much rather see EJ back to play with the guys on Red House! In fact I'd much rather see EJ back on G3 in general, or someone new.

Greg M (was it you who talked about SBM?), anyway, you can easily learn Hill Groove! I've almost learned it all, bar a bunch of the solo phrases, so you can learn it!
Joe, what do you make of Nuno? That, I'd be interested to know.

phew, thanks webmaster for clearing up the unfortunate confusion. Anybody know how that dumb rumour got started? Whoever it was, is not in the slightest bit funny.

R6, yeah I think it's too cool that you can get a Jenny solo on your album, but nobody else seems to give a shit. shame, cause she is so damn good! If I was recording a CD I'd definitely write a tune for her to do a 'guest' part on!!
Hey Joe, how come you play Ice 9 at hyper-speed these days? It's still cool, but I still prefer it the original album version - it had that nice rolling groove to it, and the rhythmn part comes out sounding more meaty! You should slow it down again some time, to the same chilled tempo as Hill Groove.

Take it easy dude!

Clarky, about the price of Ibanez spares - £12 for a bag of new plastic bushes for the trem-arm on the Jem??!!!!

I laughed when the dude in my local shop told me that, but soon stopped when I realised he wasn't kidding.

I wonder how many thousands of those split plastic 'o's have been produced. that's where Ibanez make their money - not on £2000 guitars but on thousands of little bits of plastic which sell for £1.20 each!

R6, no I didn't actually! hehe, I decided to spend 6 quid on strings instead of 12 quid on the stale middle-bits out of polo mints! hehehe.

I just put the new ones on so I don't need them right now, but I probably will bite the bullett and fork out next time I'm at the shop. jeeeezzz - you spend four grand in one shop on guitar/amp/other stuff, and you still have to pay £1.20 for a lump of nylon! hehe, somethings not right there!

I put the new ones on and my trem arm was tight as a....well......let's just say it was tight, and two hours later it started going sloppy again. Sounds like what the dude told you was right. also, they're coated in a thin layer of black paint, but it wears off with use, and if it's coming off it means the arm is getting very slightly smaller, and thus, looser.

I wonder if Steve will put the bit about Jimi Hendrix on his DVD?! would be funny, but it didn't go down too well at the show so it might not be a good move! hehe

Clarky, criminal indeed.

Lead Op, that's cool man. What a great tune to change your life to! Sounds like a great choice - I'd probably have 'The Forgotten [part 2]' or some Johnson - although I think 'Lonely In The Night', my favourite EJ, would be a little inappropriate! hehehe!
Crispin, it depends what tone you want. If you want something pretty dirty - say a James Hetfield or a Jon Petrucci sound - then get the Dual Rec. it's got bags of easy distortion without sounding false. Also, it sounds 'more ampy', so it doesn't taint your guitar's sound.

What guitar do you use? cuz the Boogie won't compliment the JS very well.........better with a PGM, or something with EMG's on.

if you want something smoother, for a JS, Vai or EJ tone, look at the Carvin Legacy or the best of the Fenders - they are cracking amps. Marshall Vintage series is meant to be ace too, but very loud! hehe.

Greg, no the plastic bushes are not, to my knowledge, generic. But I haven't tried anybody elses - they may be the same, just in an Ibanez-labelled poly-bag! Even if they are specially made to Ibanez spec, they still aren't worth £1.20 each!

Alexandria, that's cool that you're keeping it standard setup. And it's cool that you're getting better. Hope everything else is good! take it easy

Crispin, as I said, the Dual Rec is 'more ampy', so it's clean channel will amplify your guitar's tone, rather than amplifying your guitar's notes, then giving them an accent, if you get what I mean.

But again, it depends on what sound you want. You should definitely check out some more classic rigs as well - Fender, Vintage Marshall. With those guitars I would want something really smooth like a Fender, but that's just my favoured tone.

Dual rec wouldn't be the first thing I thought of if I was after a new amp. I'd probably have a fender or another Legacy! hehe.

Basically, you just gotta try it. your ears will tell you in ten minutes what a bunch of magazines and people's recommendations will tell you in the next ten years, but yeah, I suppose we can help point you in the roughly-right direction.

Happy amp-testing!

SOTD, Juice. Gotta love that solo!

Greg, dude, this kiddy sounds like a total f*ck-head!

There may be an easy solution to the problem tho - show him the TAB and standard to Mr Vai's 'Juice'. I started on it last night, and got SO stuck, SO early! hehe. it's bloody ridiculous - there's all these funny things going on between important notes, and at 200 BPM it's pretty hard to fit them in.

Did you say he wants to make a nylon-string electric, or did you make a mistake? hehe, the latter I hope, otherwise he's got some learning to do!

Yeah, I hate how people who don't play say 'oh, playing guitar is a piece of p*ss, its so easy'. Little do they know!

So the Music Man JPM is better than the Luke model? in what way? i prefer Lukather's sound, but he's so different it's probably not fair to judge between them.

Petrucci is awesome, but i'd rather see Gilbert on the next G3 as well!

ToneCapone isn't the ESP H202 a signature? or is it different from the KH202? Well, if it is a sig, it's probably going to be the best since signatures often tend to be a little better.

That said, the S is a good guitar. you should also have a gander at the Ergodyne guitars. They're really nice.

Crushingday, hehehe! fair play man!
MegaBoyd, that's pretty cool. how do you change what it says tho? Bet you were chuffed about how much screentime you got! hehe

Max Cruncher. LOL. Don't you think also, Major Bummer would be a cool name for a dude in the Army? hehe.
ToneCapone, 300-850 dollars? that would definitely include the Paul Gilbert Model, the Ergodyne...errr.....470, I think is the better one, and also check out the best S and RG series guitars you can get in that price bracket. I dunno if you could get a JS900 for $850? could certainly get a 100 and they are pretty nice.

Or you could go second-hand and get something REALLY good for the money.
