Austin, yeah it was last February, but we didn't have any time to stop in LA apart from on our last morning when it rained!

And regards my next trip - on the contrary, a return to LA is very likely. I would most probably fly there, cause it's direct and cheaper. And I actually kinda like it. That being the case, I would, this time, really like to make time to hang out, I was really annoyed I didn't get to meet up with you before!

Fretslayer, congrats dude, good to hear you've got your debut out! Keep on rockin!
estrela, alexandre, hello!
DCK, haha, subtle! I like it
Yoda, fair enough dude....I definitely have to agree with you on the boutique thing - a Twin, for instance, wouldn't cover the whole Prog Rock/Metal thing too well! haha. I do reckon you can do better than a DSL100......you should look for an older Marshall.....ebay?
OCPS470, Prosonic you say? That one's getting added to my "to-investigate" list. haha, I saw the words "Eric" and "Johnson" together and jumped!
Gazhan, no euro dates yet. Sign up to the JS online newsletter and you'll get e-mails telling you about dates. That's if you email works, of course.
I'm thinking a good theme tune for the messageboard might be Up In Flames?

Yoda, fair play, enjoy your DSL100! hehe
mikesb, you know, if all that were actually possible, I'd probably suffer a heart trauma on the 'plane, just from sheer excitement! haha. I bet andy's and eric's websites get loaded with amazing reviews next week, and videos and photos and loads of stuff making me completely depressed that I didn't go! And something like "everyone who came to the show had a great time.....and those who couldn't make it....too bad, cause by Texas State Law it can never happen again". haha, I just got to keep telling myself I did make the right decision!
cuthbert, I wish I knew dude....I e-mailed trutina a few months ago and never heard anything....I sincerely hope he's still with us...

Suzie, thank you!

Stevee T, you speak russian? Also, the opposite of dork is a krod, just in case you hadn't worked that out already ;-) hehe
LucySorets, gracias amiga! Yeah it's annoying I couldn't go see Nuno. I wish all these guys would have more confidence in themselves and just sort out a proper euro tour! At least there's a better chance of it when Population 1's new album comes out....it's going to be big!
Webmaster, thanks for that
armadacd, welcome tom. Re. the RSI.....RSI, more often than not, happens because you're doing somethign wrong. My first suggestion would be to review your posture....do you play with the tips of your left-hand fingers, are both hands really relaxed? Do you see any white knuckles on either hand?

I used to get mild RSI's that would stop me playing for a few weeks, but then I found out the improtance of proper posture and sorted out my bad habits....that took a while, but was worth it! If you want more detailed info on proper posture just ask.....I can try to explain it, but it's not easy! It's hard enough when the person in question is right in front of me and I can manipulate their hands!

Good luck!

Zenfish, "Steve Vai is never as good as when he breaks all the rules to create some songs like 0000, Lucky Charms, or Fever Dream. Here is for me the great Steve. More than the guitar heroe. The composer. He should continue in this way".....I agree entirely. I hope he reviews his composition technique and reverts to the way he was writing 4 or 5 years ago, it was much more rewarding.

armadacd, sounds pretty good.....as long as you're really relaxed. What about your right hand? How do you hold the pick? It should just be loosely between thumb and forefinger, with your hand comfortably resting on the bridge.

Other than that, all I can suggest is to make sure you warm up! Use some scales and exercises, preferably with a metronome, and start off gentle, slowly upping the tempo and level of technicality. Try not to rush into playing......we all do it though.....I do it all the time, it's a really bad habit to get into! haha

Stevee T, yeah I went Krod fishing last winter, got a really good haul! hehe

Zenfish, too true. I doubt it's going to happen though. I'm intrugued to see just how far Steve runs with the Real Illusions thing. Still, he's going to be releasing The Aching Hunger CD at some point....that'll be good, his composition for that show was excellent!

Webmaster, I too can confirm the bug with the old chat. I haven't tried the new one for more than a few minutes, but I found that the old chat server randomly evicted me after 15 minutes, and it happened to a few of those I was talkign with as well.

Not really a problem, to be honest!

alexandre, gracias amigo!

TASTEY, that's so sad to hear about that guy's poor cat.....I sincerely hope the perpetrators are caught and punished. Cruelty to animals is just plain wrong.....I find stories about cruel treatment of cats really upsetting, I love cats!
BigBunny, congrats on getting your letter published....keep spreading the Joe/Vai love!
Cliff, good to see another Nuno fan! I'd love to see that guitar legends video, where did you find it? or were you lucky enough to be around to record the original broadcast?

Cliff, you'll love the Guitar Wars DVD, it's amazing. Nuno is just on fire, he completely rocks, and Paul's set is especially good too. Mikey (Ovation1) got me interested in it, then I got VFR interested, so there's a few of us at least who know what the rest are missing! hehe

Damn, I really want to see that video.....If I do find it on the net it's going to be a huge download. Time to do some research! Wish me luck! haha

Brother Al, what does it play like? haha, love the MGD tone and volume control knobs!
nitefire, "My daughter is 2 1/2 years old and absolutely idolizes you.Everytime i put in your Live in San Francisco dvd she puts on my sunglasses and grabs her plastic guitar and plays right along with ya".....that is too f*ck*n cute man! It's great to hear of people starting their kids off early.....Do you suppose she'll be interested in changing the plastic guitar for a real one a few years down the line?

Brother Al, sweet, it's great when custom jobs turn out well. I recently finished customising my Ibanez GIO and I'm really, really happy with it. I think it's also something Ibanez could market with some success, if it was designed and built with their CNC gear. But hey, it's nice to have something really unique, right?!

Ovation1, hell yeah brotha! I'm still rocking out to Getting Better, Viking Kong and Gravity! It's such a cool DVD, thanks a load for finding the link for me to buy it!

Also, dude, did you see the new Nuno Bettencourt Signature guitars that Washburn are now selling? They're pretty cool, though I still prefer the Relic N4!

TASTEY, I almost threw up my Fajitas reading your post. The bastard needs to be caught and then have his eyes gouged out and be hung up by his feet. Then maybe I could bag a free flight out to wherever it is he's hanging, then spend a few days practicing my baseball swing against his face.

aussieRGman, he uses a pen at meet and greets. Usually a black or silver magic marker.....it really depends on what you give him to sign it with. So yeah, use a black or silver marker, and then you need to find out what kind of lacquer you can use which won't make the pen run.

Ovation1, yeah the scratchplate on the new Washburn's is kinda crazy! I like it for it's originality, but if all of Washburn's finest were hanging on a wall I'd shoot straight past the N5, N6 and the beautiful Jennifer Batten models, and offer my drool to the N4's every time. Especially the Relic, it's such a hottie! hehe. Hope you're having a rockin' weekend bro!
Austin, congrats dude, sounds like you did a fine job last night. Can't wait to hear about "Searching".....it's an awe-inspiring tune anyway, it must be quite incredible to witness it live?!

Ovation1, haha, Decadence Dance on flashback radio?! Awesome! Nuno does indeed rock, and yeah, I think I'd wear it a little higher too....I don't understand how he has it that low and still plays with such clean, consistent technique!
OCPS470, would 6L6's make it dirtier? As I understand it, the EL34's give the smoother tone which lends itself to natural distortion when using a hot pickup, and 6L6's distort all by themselves.....but I could be completely wrong....

Delfino, perhaps it's cause more people spend time shaggin in august/spetember-ish than they do at any other time of year.....I guess hot weather gets 'em going! haha. That's why there's more bithdays in march/april/may! hehe

Ovation1, thanks for heads-up on Pablo's new tour. Wow, he's actually got EUROPE on that list! What a nice surprise! Also, that photo of him with the three pointy guitars is wild.....where did he get himself a spacesuit?!?
Powerslave, yes I've spent a lot of time playing with different picks, trying to find what gives the best tone. I've been using Ibanez Paul Gilberts or Heavies (they're the same) a lot, until recently, when I went back to the Dunlop Jazz III's. I like these little jazz picks cause they're heavy, so you hardly have to put any effort in. Less effort and hard work lends itself to more control.
aussieRGman, sorry about your band problem. To be honest, that's completely their own assy fault/problem.....if they can't deal with you being late cause you had to look after your ill mother then they don't deserve any more of your time. Keep on rockin!

Regards signing guitars.....there's a few different approaches:

I took the scratchplate off my strat and took it to a G3 aftershow, and got a bunch of signatures on it.....it now hangs on the wall. I wrote the date on the back with the same black magic marker and tried lacquering it with some Humbrol spray that you use forplastic model kits. It smudged.....some orange pigment ran from the black, giving a nasty orange outer glow! hehe. Good thing I only did it on a test patch on the back of the scratchplate!

On my GIO (the blue one I finished customising a couple of weeks ago) I have written a japanese character on the black back cover which goes over the control cavity. That was done with silver fiber-tip marker.....it's a little smudgy cause it's on (matte) plastic, but after I left it to properly dry for 2 days, it has never rubbed off, and has no lacquer on it. Thing is, nobody can see it while you're playing it.

If you want your signature visible then you should find a piece of plastic a write on it with both silver and black markers, and the try out some lacquers. If you find one that dries and doesn't affect the pen ink at all, then tenderly edge towards the abyss, then dive right in and hope it's still smudge-free on when you write on your guitar!

A side note would be this - if you have a scratchplate, write it on there, cause they are easily replacable. If you do write on the scratchplate, take it off before doing it.

If you don't have a scratchplate and want to show off the signature, write on the headstock.....this way, when you apply lacquer, you only have to lacquer the headstock. If you write on the body, you'll have to evenly spray a coat of lacquer over the entire body, and that is not easy to do!

If I've forgotten anything, you'll probably get to hear about it in the next few days! haha. I don't think I have though. Hope that helps! :-)

Delfino, that "Entrance To Ground" sign sounds like a real gem! haha. Which one of you kept it?

cuthbert, haha, thanks for that. How come most rock star types use Sharpie pens then?!
juju, crazy weather! hey at least it was her return flight that was cancelled.....it's better that you get to spend more time with 'em than not time! Hope everything's going okay with you :-)
Ovation1, thanks for the link to the PG tour poster! It's hilarious! Paul does most of that stuff himself doesn't he? He's crazy, but awesome with it! hehe
BigBunny, that's pretty nuts.....I thought that was the whole point of a ticket stub! That's their bit, and you keep the big bit. Especially if you're going to a seated venue, it's your ticket that tells you your area, row and seat allocations! Little buggers are breaking the rules!
Steven Wilde, awesome, sounds like you had a great time! Sorry to hear you're ill again bro, hope it passes quickly. It's great that you got to see Joe though, and Vegas is a pretty cool place to see him! Take it easy amigo
alexandre, sorry to hear the master isn't sounding as good as it needs to.....I hate when you spend ages recording something and cutting and editing and mixing, and then when you mix it down and master it it comes out sounding like sh*t. It confuses the hell outta me....."it sounded great five minutes ago, so what could possibly have hapened to make it sound like this?"

hehe. Also, thanks, hope you have a great week too hombre!

rockarolla_70, no you don't have to play acoustic first. It is fair to say that it will help....if you just learn some basic chords and scales on it, you'll find it a lot easier to play them when you move to electric.

Also, if you do start off with acoustic, you're more likely to learn some very useful fingerpicking techniques which can be a very powerful tool when you transfer them to electric. Eric Johnson does this a lot and it makes up a key part of his very unique style/sound.

I didn't start off with acoustic. I can play acoustic but only really to a basic standard....I can't really do any fingerpicking stuff, so I wish I had started on acoustic!

Hope that helps!

Clarky/Delfino, yourfart stories cracked me up! well done chaps! hehe
Delfino, hehe, cool photos. Having looked through 'em, I reckon Lee fancies you. Adam looks like the undead, and is Dean...like...9 feet tall or something?! haha. Nice sign....you need to dig a hole, stick the sign on a post pointing slightly down towards the hole, and take a photo....Now that's art! haha
BigBunny, yeah small venues are tricky....they only work when they're a really special environment, but when they're poorly designed it makes things hard work. I saw Joe in London on the SBM tour in 2002, and it was at a small venue, but it was an old building, with a great layout and it was fantastic. I hope you get to see Joe again, in a better venue.

. ... .. ..... ... . . Ooops. Sorry, I'll clean that up ;-)

Steven Wilde, awesome dude, I'm pleased you had a great time in Vegas too! I think it's a very odd city, but I like it.....it's just so unlike anywhere else, it's kinda cool. Palm Springs gave off a similar kind of vibe, but in a different sense.....it's all so perfect, and picturesque, it leaves you wondering whether or not it is actually a real place! hehe. I couldn't live in either Palm Springs or Vegas, but I'd happily visit both again!

Also, Bob Rock and singer from Spinal Tap.....haha, that's hilarious. And you're absolutely right!

Enjoy the new CD's - Archives Volume 3 is awesome, there's some cracking tunes on there!

Suzie, Tom Delonge is one of the little 'tards from Blink 182. They all look the same anyway, but he's the one with the lip piercing, dumb looking haircut and generally looks like a 12 year old. Hmm. Perhaps that's a bit harsh......11 year old.
silent_shady, hahaha, someone else who's heard of GWAR! GWAR are hilarious. Do they take themselves seriously? They seem to, judging by their website!
SOTD, anything by Nuno Bettencourt. I'm in a very Nuno mood.....just listening to the first Extreme album....damn these guys had so much energy.

Suzie, hmmm, "Midnight Express" was on Extreme's 4th and final album. It's a little different, a little more grown up, perhaps, than earlier Extreme stuff. Also, it's not typical of Extreme stuff.....most of their stuff is funk metal, very energetic, great vocals, lots of harmonies, the best rhythm guitar playing you'll ever hear and some of the finest solos too.

I think you would really like Nuno's more recent Mourning Widows and Population 1 titles. I think everybody would like them actually. I haven't yet played Mourning Widows to anyone who's said "no, I don't like it". It's awesome. I can thoroughly recommend that you just buy the self-titled MW album and give it a few listens. And if you don't like it, I'll buy it off you and give it to someone or keep it as a spare or frame it or something. I'm not kidding!

Anyway, yeah I'm not bad thanks. Easter holiday is over so I've got most of my students back! yay! how about you, hows it going with the JSX?

silent_shady, GWAR is Viking Slash Metal at it's best!!!! haha. I only heard brief bits at a friend's place when he showed me the website, but as I remember it, it was Viking Slash Metal/Death Metal.....whatever you want to call it.

Cliff, I think you might have misunderstood - I've got the Guitar Wars DVD. Ovation1 pointed me in the right direction we he got his copy.....it's phenomenal.

No I have no idea what kind of acoustic Nuno plays, but I should think if you look in/post a message in the "gear forum" on the Population 1 website, someone will be able to tell you what acoustic it is, what guage of strings are on it.....and all sorts of scary shit that obsessive fans really shouldn't be allowed to know! hehe

marimariSRV, did you get any photos of Mr Morse?
Jazzzzzy, aww, nice photos man. What the hell is that double-neck that Steve is playing? I can't say I remember ever seeing that before! Looks cool! Double-neck chrome jem with Vai insignia on the body.....can't be bad! hehe
petrucci_js, haha, III Sides is an amazing album! I love the whole first side, it's so raucous and rebellious, but so beautifully written!
tune, aww, thanks dude! I'm plased Red Square cheered you up! Thanks a lot for listening to it! have a coold day :-)

bubbakja, for a string quartet I gotta say I wouldn't go with summer cong. It's too fast and relies too much on it's rhythm's. I'd go for a ballad, like Love Thing or The Forgotten (Part II).
alexandre, gracias amigo! You're very cool too! hehe. Hows things going with your music? did you get that new track up on the website yet?
Delfino, here's my suggestion - 20 quid over four events = a fiver a time. At the beginning of the evening suggest that everybody lays a fiver out on the table, and that will cover the first couple of rounds. When the next couple of rounds need paying for and the next lot of fivers get put in the middle of the table, you conveniently need to slide off for a piss. You know, a real long piss, but when you come back, make yourself busy nearby and then just melt back into the group.....if you make a big re-arrival people will be reminded that you didn't put a fiver in and you'll get busted. haha. That's my first idea.....If I do happen to come up with any others I'll let you know! :-)
my mum/mom has gone away for a few days and the cat has been put in the cattery (cat kennels) so I have been left alone. It's really boring and quiet without the cat ;-)

TASTEY, haha, no it's just that whenever she goes away, the cat breaks the rules! hehe. basically, my mom lets the cat out in the morning and shuts her in again when she comes home from work for lunch, early afternoon. We've had a few cats killed on the road and really don't want it happening again, so we don't want her out after dark......only, whenever my mom's not around, the cat stays out late....i'm talking 11, 12 o'clock, without breakin a sweat. So mom decided to put her in the holiday home to avoid it happening! hehe.

Suzie, no problem. The folks on the Population 1 messageboard alerted me to the fact that amazon is selling a DVD of classic Extreme music vids. I ordered it, should arrive in 1-2 weeks. I can't wait!
Cliff, oh, haha, crossed wires indeed! My bad! No I've not had any luck finding that footage. that said, I can hardly say I've been looking....I got sidetracked by the (above mentioned) Classic Extreme DVD! Will let you know how it turns out (unless you have it?)

Also, no I don't have the Little Alligator, but when I can finally afford to I'll get one. I am continually impressed with the performance of the Bad Horsie, despite having had it for about 3 years now.....it stills gets me excited, I'm sure it's volume moderating counterpart will perform with just as much class, accuracy, consistency and general coolness

Delfino, oooo, taxis are killer! if you manage it, that's going to be the best thin-spreading of 20 quid in recorded history! hehe

Ethn Hyabusa, interesting to see your comment about the loudness.....I thought the same when I saw joe last year. I saw him in summer '02 in London when he was trying out a Cornford and the sound was spot-on. Last summer, when he was using the JSX, the tone was ok but the volume was insane.
