Hey Satch,

Thanks for the forum. Can you tell me what type of drugs Steve Vai is on? If so, I want what he's on! I listened to his tunes Voodoo Acid as well as Blood and Tears. I'm soo impressed I want someone to kill me AND my guitar.

I hope to see you in concert again soon. If you can offer some advice, I'd like to know how you gained your status as a solo guitarist. Were you successful in a band first? Did someone simply like your music and they helped promote you? Any self promotion tips are much appreciated.

GregM - I didn't mean for it to sound like Steve Vai is on drugs. His playing is soo out there sometimes you'd think he'd have to be on drugs. It's phenominal music.

Dave Mc - I seem to remember reading an article that Vai and Satch used to sit back to back as friends and just practice away. I don't think it was a matter of teaching unless they were teaching eachother.

My question has more to do with how Satch gained his popularity in the beginning. How he started his following. How he was able to market himself to fans, peers, and executives. Or maybe he didn't have to.

It's kinda like.. If noone is around to hear the tree fall .. does it really make a sound? I could be a great guitar player but how do I get people to hear it?

i have some pics of joes flame guitar. he posts a url link to the artists website somewhere around here. from what i can tell it's not as nice as some of the harley gas tanks the guy paints.

i think 1077thebone.com has mp3's of joe playing the national anthem in their studio. there is also a video on the internet of joe playing it for the giants game.

i have pics of my white kramer that joe signed when i met him at the warfield in san francisco 2001. he didn't ask me to play for him =]

I like sammy hagar too. He's all about rock and roll. He's been doing it long enough. My song "Trampoline" is topping the Instrumental rock charts. Help me make #1

I look at all the Joe Satriani clones and wonder when you'll get a mind of your own. Yes, I'm impressed with Joe Satriani. Yes, I've seen him in concert and it was great. Yes, I've met him backstage as well as his family and cousins. Do I worship him? NO. Do I try to play like him? NO. Can I play his songs? YES.

Joe Satriani is a musician. Musicians play music. Certainly you can do the same without ever hearing Joe Satriani. I think Joe Satriani would tell you himself. Be yourself. Be your own person. Create something that is original. Anyone can do what Joe Satriani does. It's a matter of will and knowing what you want to do. Try it.

Madeh

Recently I told someone some of my influences were Satriani, Page, Van Halen, and Vai. Well the person listened to my music. I saw him a week later and he said that he wasn't hearing Satriani or Page or Van Halen. GET A CLUE! I don't care to sound like them! They are great! They are icons! Legends! But why would I want to be or sound like them? Who does Satriani sound like? Does he sound like Jimmy page? Does he sound like Steve Vai? Does he try to play like Van Halen? He does what's in his heart! He plays what he is! Satriani is successful because he is not a clone. He is an individual. That is my point. If you want to play Satriani songs all your life, that is your perogative. I'm just saying dare to be different. Step outside the box and be yourself. While we can all learn from great guitar players, they can also learn a little from us as well.

Why is it when people hear a rock lead guitar they instantly think "heavy metal" ??? Sure, I play an endless amount of notes and my chords can be a little raunchy with some gain and a touch of distortion, but I don't call it "heavy metal"!

I like to think of my music as instrumental rock "MUSIC" It's music. It's not judas priest, or pantera, or the scorpions. When I play guitar I try to play with integrity. I'm not trying to be a speed induced metal head.

Furthermore, I don't think of Satriani as "heavy metal". To me Led Zeppelin is not "heavy metal". Even though Sammy Hagar has a song titled "heavy metal", I don't really consider him as "heavy metal" either. Just because a guitar is loud and distorted doesn't mean it's "heavy metal".

Question for Joe Satriani: I know that Joe plays with some bands here and there, but why do we never hear Joe Satriani play a solo for some pop artist or on some rock bands new song? Kinda like how Van Halen did a solo for Michael Jackson. Wouldn't it be cool if Satriani did a solo on a new pop song or collaborated with a rap artist or something!? Just a thought ...

Dear JS,

In the spirit of giving this holiday season, I'm producing a benefit show called "The Pacific Times Toy Drive" on December 16th at The Canvas Gallery at 1200 9th Avenue. and Lincoln in San Francisco.

This show will benefit under-priviledged children in our local community. People that bring in a toy for a child will get a free CD from one of our local community musicians and see live accoustic music until 12pm.

I'd like to ask if Joe Satriani can provide a "quick" surprise and rare acoustic performance the night of the show. This would greatly enhance the success of the show and would be an honor and a treat.

Your time and consideration in this matter is greatly appreciated!

Thank you, David Gizzarelli www.pacific-times.org San Francisco, CA 94110 415 830 0894
