You could say I'm a bit behind- got the Live in SF DVD last weekend. Haven't been to a Satch gig for quite a while (the first G3 was the last one I went to!). Boy have I been missing out!!! It just reminded me of how good live guitar really can be! Come back to the UK this time 'round please!!!! I promise I'll go!!!! Wouldn't miss it for the world!

Its also inspired me to get back in the studio & do some new stuff! Cheers!

Also, Re: the thread on trems (floyd vs edge etc) I have a (now quite old) RG547 with an edge trem. It never goes out of tune!!! No matter what abuse it gets! An excellent system IMHO.

Finally (long post this but much to say...) Devils slide & borg sex work really well as full on rock tunes- gave them a whole different dimension. Brilliant stuff! Loved SBM too, which leaves us all with one question.... What next?? A second G3 CD maybe after this tour?????

Later Kev

Me again, technical question: I'm working on a track at the mo, have a few ideas for scales for the "solo" section, but can't remember a name, can anyone tell me what the mode from the 6th degree of a natural minor scale is called??? (In case you're wondering, I'm going for Eflat played against a G(minor) riff. The riff uses G,C,D and Eflat so I should be OK). Of course, any other scale or melodic ideas would be greatly appreciated (All suggestions will be credited of course!!!!!!)

Many many thanks

Methodical_4U:Cheers, I should've known that!!! (Eflat is the fourth degree of Bflat major)!!!! Doh! While I'm on the topic, I don't suppose anyone would care to list the names of the modes of the harmonic and melodic minor scales? Would be very much appreciated!!!

Always learning... Kev

Just my 2p's worth to the "SV's faster than JS's faster than EJ" "debate"- It don't mean a thing if there's no melody or point to what's being played. I remember (when I first started playing) I bought a whole bunch of CD's by "chops" players (e.g Michael Angelo). Very very fast, sure, but totally dull! I started off playing a lot of blues stuff, so to me feel and melody are extremely important, theory and technique also incredibly important but they should never be used to the point of "look what I can do".... I this is one of the things Joe does incredibly well, I'm sure you've noticed he uses a lot of "blues-rock" style riffs, and what con only be described as "melodic shredding"!! At the end of the day, you play what you enjoy playing, and if someone else likes it then you're lucky! (sorry, I think I ripped that off from someone ;-) ), but that's where Joe, Steve, Eric J, Eric C etc etc all come from, the "flash over feel" school lived and died in the 80 and early 90's thank goodness!!

Sorry for rambling, but this is just my opinion, out of millions of others...after all, someone, somewhere probably likes Michael Angelo.... !!! (kidding)

Mr Nick Just had a look at that- is it me, or does that look (a) bloomin' complicated (no surprise there then), and (b) beyond the average "fan"????? Might be fun to have a play with tho!! Incidentally, and on a slightly related topic, does anyone remember the Guitar For the Practicing Musician article by Joe (I think it was one of the "advanced improvising" jobbies, with a chart for part of "The Eight Steps". Personally I've never heard this track, would be funny to see if my interpretation was anywhere near the real thing!!?? Just a thought!

Also, you may (not) be interested to know that the result of my weekend studio- marathon has resulted in 2 new songs, and finally mixed down 4 old ones (including a proper classical piece which I'm pretty proud of!!), so thats 6 songs for the new album already- pray for a few more weekends like that one!! Only hope that watching the LISF DVD in my "breaks" didn't influence me too much!!!!!

Also, T2J CD- no fair, I didn't know!!! Guess I'm too late now! Tell me when there's gonna be another one, oh go on, you know you want to!!! And how can I get a copy of this one when its done??? Going now as this is getting long.

Whew! There's been some prolific posting since I was last on, and that was only last night!! Mr Nick & Ovation1 Thanks for the stuff on T2J, checked the site, and listened to a couple of tracks- sounds good, you can be guaranteed I'll be getting a copy (and also maybe one of those cool tees). Webmaster (&Joe) Cool news about the new album!!! Can't wait for the promos!!! I sort-of-agree with the other comments re SBM and EOC, but we've already got an "Extremist" and a FIABD- new stuff always wins for me, just keep playin' and teachin' us new stuff with every album!

Re: DT. Went to one of those "evening with..." gigs at the Astoria, (my third DT gig) those guys are incredible live. Will be going to Hammersmith in Jan!! 6DOIT was a bit "inaccessible" in places, difficult to take in a single listen but excellent all the same!!

Also, my new website will (hopefully) be up in the near future. Planning to have streams and a few other bits, details later!

OME Not involved in the MTV contest you were asking about, but I've just received an email from the Channel co-ordinator at Extreme TV (a UK cable sports channel), who are intersted in using some of my tunes. I'll let you all know when I have more details.

Just seen Joe's message. Essential JS, huh? Well, it's all pretty essential!!! I guess Flying in A Blue Dream is a MUST, but it is already on a couple of live CD's and the original so I'd have to go for something else... The live version of Mystical Potato always rocks, maybe 1 or 2 "singing" songs, in which case "Strange" and "I Believe", a couple of "sufing" type songs (Alien, Satch Boogie) and yes Love Thing, which is a great ballad.

Just my 2p's worth

Just about 1/2 way through catching up with the posts on here, but a couple of things that I have to comment on before continuing: Satchman9. Terrible news, RIP- you had many friends here. the cheese: A fellow Sheffielder!! (I'm stuck here in London but was born & bred near the Don Valley! No sound at work but I'll give your stuff a listen when I get home. As a reciprocal favour: check my old album on www.peoplesound.com/artist/kevtoogoodsdiscovery (crappy title I know!), new work forthcoming soon!

Back to catching up. I'll edit my essential JS list soon, promise. Any T2J CD news?

BeeZer: It's a Jim Dunlop CryBaby, the best wah on the planet (TM, probably). You can get'em from "Highly Strung" for about £80 (not a plug, just info!), but if you're reading this Mr Highly Strung salesman, have you got the other 5 of my 3mm stubby picks yet?? If I lose this one this weekend I'll be back to the flappy old 0.5's!!!

:-)

Caught up now, so going to do my Essential JS list..

Hi all, Just a quickie, feelin' sleepy. There sure are a lot of good guitarists in the old homestead- Ricardo L can't remember your screen name, but just checked out the site. Reckoning point is a really cool melody, some nice ideas! As mentioned previously, I'm stuck in Londres at the moment, but hail from Wincobank (nr Meadowhall). Just listenign to some of Peter Mula's stuff on his IUMA site- pretty good! Did you know he was a "featured artist" at the moment!? Working on some MORE new stuff at present, just finished a rough demo of a great Lydian melody (a lovely harmony part on it!) which is tentatively titled "Snow Angel". Hope to get a full version completed soon, but had to go shopping today (on a Sunday!) Off to bed now. Night all!

thecheese Didn't haev time to catch the other track- was listening late at night & had to get some sleep, but will listen this weekend and give more feedback if it helps! Didn't know your mate Dave (shame!) incredible that such a small place has produced a plethora of top guitarists!! Incidentally, Wednesday or United? (you too GregM Watched the Wednesday v Wycombe game last night- absolutely dire, but the result is the important thing. Up the Owls!

Back in the "studio" later in week, recording keys and 2nd percussion track for "Snow Angel".

962 True, I find it difficult keeping 3 in tune & clean & strung & set up, but doesn't Steve just sell them on ebay rather than changing the strings?? ;-) Anyone seen one of steve's jem with burnt bits and that cool blue finish? I would LOVE to get my hands on one of those babies...!

Back to work now (boo!)

Hey all, Sorry long time no post. Had to catch up on all the insanity going on here! Skipped a page or two- sorry guys! Thought I'd never get here. Add my vote for FC7 (I think we are nearly equal now!!!). Story time:

Went to guitar shop for a cable, all my old 'uns are a bit crappy, so thought I'd go for a Planet Waves (they are fantastic, incidentally). However, in guitar shop and thought "ooh, I'll have a play with some toys while I'm here...". End result, walked out with a new Vox wah, and free PW cable!!! "My girlfriend's gonna kill me.....!!!!"- decided to soften the blow by finishing off "Snow Angel", and adding some new sparkly vox wah tones to the harmony guitar. Sounds good, she loves it, all happy. Tried one of those q-series Crybabies, but they don't cut it c.f. the Vox... Moral of story, if you go to a guitar shop to buy bits, don't decide to play with new shiny toys- you'll leave with one!!!

So, SOTD (for me & everyone at work) me own, "Snow Angel" deedededeeeeledeeeldeeeee...... .......and "G3 4 UK!!!!!"

Hey all, Just got meself set up to receive "The Bone" in readiness for the Rockline G3 interview- is it Eastern standard time? If this is the case I'll be listening intently at 1:30am Thursday 2nd Oct (GMT). That's OK, I should just be back from jujitsu!! I'll be getting my late for work excuses all ready!!

And in the 1/2 hour I've been listening to it I've heard no fewer than..... 4 Satch trax, this is like Satch FM!!!! Cool!!!

Ooh, now they're playing Always... (A live version)I love this station!!

GregM Not me- I missed out, by the time I knew about it the tix for London Hammersmith Apollo had sold out!!! :-( Still haven't got my website sorted out- too much else to do, and still "in the zone" tunes- wise, I'm working on 3 new songs at the moment- a nice "Eastern" (phrygian) sounding track (using DADGAD on my old Epi LP for the rhythm gtr- instatnt Led Zep!!) with lots of fx and keyboard parts, a mixolydian odd-time thing that starts off in 7/8 (in fact I might write the whole thing in 7/8) and a Richie Blackmore-style thing (which is just a riff I write to jam along to, it might never become anything!). Any news on T2J CD? Off to training now. Ta-ta for now! SOTD: Wildest Dreams (track 1 off the new Maiden album) I have it on my MP3 player, going to have another listen to it now!!

Rock on!!

Havent' been around for a while so sorry if I missed 'owt!! Was snowboarding on the weekend (just learning)- for you UK based guys & gals, I went to Tamworth Snowdome (real snow indoors). OK not as good as the real stuff, but it rocks all the same. I'm totally hooked!!! Think I might have to write some good music to SB by...(Think I already have a few trax that fit the bill), reckon any of Joe's surfing-type stuff should fit the bill too!

Lookin at the latest pics, I'm intrigued by the "recording Jeff's Harley" pic- can we expect some interesting samples and SFX on the new album???

Catch you later

Just a quickie- Any South West London based T2J-ers?? Fancy getting together for a pint/jam/chat? I'm moving to Tooting Bec area as of this Sunday (4th Oct), so if any of you guys or gals fancy a get together, drop me a line! Also, I'm trying to get back in the "scene" ,so need to make some contacts! Especially if you play bass...... (I need a bassline for one of my trax and I'd like to have a "live" bass rather than programmed for this one!!!)

Hey all, World's most infrequent poster here again! ;-). Need to catch up on listening to all you guys' new stuff esp Matt and Peter Mulas who is just going from strength to strength. As soon as I get some suitable pics I'll get an IUMA site up 'n' runnin', seems to be a good place for this type of music. Another day, another new song. Just finished "Desert Song" which reminds me of a Bedouin (spelling?) campfire... Even though I've never seen one "in the flesh", just get a vibe, you know. 'bout 1/2 way towards a new album. Any more t2jcd news? Looking forward to DT's ToT. Any of you lot manage to get a track together for their comp??

Sorry all, this could be a double post but I've just seen the BLUE! Good to see Joe can pop in while on the road to see what we're all up to and you lucky so-and-so's in the US think of the tour so far! I'm sure Joe takes much of what we say into account- more than most musicians do for their fans, huh? Personally I feel privileged that my favourite musician (and a huge influence on my playing to boot) listens to what his fans say! Looking forward to the DVD to see what we missed out on (boo!).
