I know this may seem really irrelevant but I've just noticed how much the intro to "Turn Up The Night" by Black Sabbath sounds like the intro to "Surfing With The Alien"....odd.
Both songs kick a lot of ass though.

Damn I got one hell of a head cold, and I still gotta come up with some ideas for a film I'm making.
Luckily during the long mucus filled days I can watch my "live in san francisco" dvd.
Anyway I'm off to blow my nose.

It would seem like my taste in music is extremely varied, from the beautifully creative melodies of Satriani, to the hard-ripping riffs of TooL and The Misfits.
My friends been getting my into a lot of the punk bands that he listens to, such as The Exploited and Dropkick Murphys.
Everyone seems to have their own taste in music, and someone before (sorry I can't remember your name) mentioned Kirk Hammet being on a G3 tour, well I think yea he's a good guitarist, but like they mentioned Metallica fans would pack the venue and Satriani fans wouldn't get a look in.
Any hoo, (this does have a point) I wanted to get some members of Satriani.com's opinons of the Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave and The Nightwatchmen's guitarist; Tom Morello.
(Sorry as well for posting twice in one day, I know its frowned on)

Right first off Ima start my post by saying i hate head colds...had this one since friday and I been taking all kinds of medication for it...stuff for ma sore throat, stuff for ma congested nose etc...Hopefully it'll go soon, I need to be in school but I feel so bad.
Second off, thanx to Master Yoda for responding about my Tom Morello Post. I've read a few interviews with Tom and in each he explains how he didn't play guitar seriously till he was 17. And how when he went away to college he would practice for 8 hours a day. Some on practical excercises i.e scales, but the other part of the day he would spend either learning theory such as chord construction or making wierd as noises, I know for a fact he is another musician who was relieved and excited by the release of the Digitech Whammy Pedal.
3rds...Now I have had two opinions of Tom Morello, what do people think of Adam Jones from TooL? Tom's old band mate when they were just kids and they had a band called Electric Sheep.
4ths...What would be the best guitar to buy if you are like me and have stubby little fingers and find some parts of scales a bit of a stretch...for example the first 3 notes of a major scale (assuming you're starting on the low E)?
So really I'm asking what guitar manufacturers have neck scales of around 24".75?
Thanx

TheA: Thanx for the response. Tom's solos seem to be unconventional when compared to Satch, Vai, Van Halen, Iommi. However in some of his solos you can see elements of scales, I own the Battle Of New Mexico dvd on which there is the song "Know Your Enemy", the solo for which Tom has admitted to struggling to play sometimes due to stiff hand muscles and so on, as every guitarist I'm sure suffers from; from one time to another.
However in this dvd he plays it correctly and it looks and sounds really nice with its mixture of scale and ofcourse Tom's on-board effects techniques.
As for Tool, "Sober" isn't one of my favourite songs by them, although I have liked nearly EVERYTHING that they have done. I prefer such songs as "Lateralus", "Parabola" and the instrumental "Triad".
You can hear Jones's creativeness coming out the the aforementioned "Triad" the most I feel as it seems to be more focussed on the sounds made by the guitar than by any other instrument, which is a key development as TooL have been known, in the past; for their heavy bass riffs created by Justin Chancellor.
I recommend a listen to the songs I have mentioned, they may not be in the same kind of genre as Joe and Steve but they are indeed powerful tracks that are well deserving of a listen.
Delfino
Edit:Ovation: Well at the moment I'm a bit poor...[as a stereotypical student should be]. I've been told Gibson have a 24.75" scale and thats best for people with little fat fingers such as myself. However the Telecaster I have was a present and I love it to death, plus I don't believe in selling presents or getting rid of them at all in fact.
I haven't had guitar lesson in two years but have influenced a friend in playing...(apparently).
Did Satch ever have lessons?

Ovation: That is indeed news to me. Joe a Tool fan? Too good to be true lol.
I think I need to learn more theory so then I will be able to pass it on to my friend, problem is where to start and how?
Being on the poor side I can't afford a teacher and most internet tutorials confuzzle me lol, I took the time to learn most scales, but things like modes get me stumped. The only other guitarist I know is a guy I used to be in a band with however he seems to refuse to learn any lead parts and sticks to rhythm as he is a big fan of Aaron Lewis (Staind).
The friend who decided to buy a guitar recently, the one i said I influenced (however I dont like saying it, makes me seem a bit egotistical) and I are going to try to start a band.
Don't know what kind of music yet as he is into a lot of punk stuff as well as a lot of acoustic stuff.
One song I told him to listen to which he ended up liking a lot (well enough to put on his mp3 player) was "Nutshell" by Alice In Chains.
Anywayz, best be off to take some more cough medicine.

I've never been on the message board when JOE has posted sadly.
Thanx for the links Ovation, especially the one with the info on Joe.
I had no background information on Joe at all before you gave me that link. I only knew about Joe teaching Kirk Hammet and Steve Vai.
I will definitly be practicing the guitar until the day I die as it is a great instrument I have dreamed of being able to play since I was very young.
Cheers

Narface that does actually help and I can see what you mean about the width as well, stubbyness being the problem so a wider neck would only result in a completely new problem lol.
I read the article on guitar-guitar.com about modes...and I'm still confuzzled lol. If anyone can help then feel free to comment...

Since it seems to be a heated discussional topic at the moment I think I will make a post about it.
VAI
Now we've had people saying Vai is over-rated and most of them have justified their reason so there points can be taken into account.
However I don't feel Vai is over-rated, Vai is an excellent guitarist. I can say that yet I own three of his albums and aren't too keen on two of them.
Maybe his albums are too inconsistent for some peoples tastes. I can see where people are coming from when they say that. Although I do think that 7th Song is one of the best albums in my collection.
Anyway you look at it Vai is a immensly talented guy, anyone who can play a guitar like that has definitly shown a great amount of dedication to learning how to play it like that.
Well thats my outlook anyway.

StringG: I always listen to my Ltd Edition Digipak Surfing With The Alien when studying for exams.
I find that if I do a certain aspect say for example with math if I take someone thing like algebra and I will listen to say Echo, then I will have the song on loop and keep going over key elements at different times in the song. So when I listen to the song over and over again it hammers in the knowledge as it keeps reminding me off the formulae or whateva.
Same goes for video games like I can remember playing a Tony Hawks Pro-Skater game while listening to an Eminem album round my friends house.
And playing a game called Carmageddon 2 while listening to Americana by The Offspring.

The first thing I heard of Vai's was a song I found called "Speed Metal Symphony" its like 9 minutes long and I don't have a clue if its on any album.
But after hearing that I bought some of Steve's albums.
However the aforementioned song is definitly my favourite, absolute genious....btw I got a feelin' its live.

Ah i forgot to mention I also own an Aria STG Series, it was my first guitar which my momma bought me :).
Great guitar to learn on.
Delfino
[Edit][MEMEGTR] Its a shame, I for one think that Kurt Cobain is too high up in the list as well, Toni Iommi is too low down (86th for christmas pudding sake!!!!) and the same with Adam Jones of Tool.
There are some guitarists I like I feel are over-rated (Cobain) and guitarists I dont like who are under-rated...cant think of an example but yes they're there.

Meany Guts: LOL weapon of choice...best phrase Ive heard in a long while...[applauds].
I won't be getting rid of my Telecaster ever...its a lovely guitar. I'm sure to buy more of them in the future...when I'm not so finicially unstable (aka broke).
I think a guitar I like the look of is the Ibanez EDR 470 or an orange S160.
Looks like the kinda guitar I'd want to customize to make my own :)

I think everyone has said how much they think Jazzman is an a**hole, lets move on before we stop a fan from posting on one of their favourite musician's forum.
I'm not taking sides but you're fillin ma'h screen with pointless retaliations, and ma'h screen should only be filled with MSN conversations, pictures, and of course happy comments on this forum :) lol.

Btw Thanx Pitch No. 8, although I was wrong about who wrote Speed Metal Symphony, it seems to have lead me into a great musical direction....the direction of Vai.
