Man, Edward Van Halen on G3 would be the guitar moment of the decade! I wonder if he would be at the bottom of the bill though? Anyhow, it would be great to hear some stuff in the vein of VH when they did the Twister soundtrack.

Joe - the G3 show in Atlanta was off the chain! 20 years worth of wait was worth every minute. The bonus of a dream come true was getting to talk to you on the phone during your interview with my wife (Kim Jones from about.com). Can't wait for the DVD to come out and I hope to be able to catch you again real soon. BTW - hearing the SpongeBob boxer story was a hoot and after talking to Vai during his interview with Kim, I see lots of SpongeBob-type entertainment in your future! For anyone interested, my band, Road to Revelation, just released our first CD. Sound clips can be heard at Road to Revelation's Site

Ga6o: KILLER VERSON MAN. Perfect intro, i don't think johnson could have done it better. And really good ending solo. Pretty much all the same notes. Thats a pretty impossible song to nail, but you pulled it off wonderfully. Amazing job.

The Prez: I have 220 and some other Phil Keaggy albums. Warm as Tears is a great song. I'm a fan of Stomp. Have you heard On The Fly? He was so inspired by the Parker Fly Deluxe that he based an entire album around it. Great stuff.

962: I was listening to Santamental this morning on my way to work and just got chills at some of the parts. Get it and listen to it LOUD!!! :D

By the way, are any of you Phil Keaggy fans aware that he plays on two tracks on the new P.O.D. album? Yep. He's on the songs Revolution and Eternal. Just thought I might share that.

Oops! Let me re-route you on that Santana site - You might want to go to "Sights & sounds", then go to audio samples. lol! duh! Sometimes multi-tasking makes you look like a retard. My bad. lol!

p.s. - go to www.Santana.com if you want to see the cool intro page :)

Greg M - Yeah, I thought that's how the joke worked.

JS Clone - You have to do "8 times 3" and then add it to "8 times 1". You're treating the problem like "8 times 31", which is incorrect.

(8 times 3) is 24 plus (8 times 1) is 25. Oct 24 expressed in Dec is 31. Still confused? LOL. It's hard to explain...sorry.

Vinny Hendrix - A G3 CD and DVD are in the works.

Clarky: ah, the "organ"...

Greg M: I had to read it twice. The key words "maths joke" did it for me. Funny stuff.

Cool interviews. Big deal about the boxer shorts. I always thought that "dress" socks and boxer shorts could have whatever cartoons or images you want (or don't want) on them. Heck, I'd wear boxers with little pink ribbons and Barney the dinosaur on them, not caring.

Maths lesson:
Most used number systems are:

HEX (hexadecimal): sixteen possible values (0-F) per column.
DEC (decimal): ten possible values (0-9) per column.
OCT (octal): eight possible values (0-7) per column.
BIN (binary): two possible values (0, 1) per column.

counting HEX: 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 0A, 0B, 0C, 0D, 0E, 0F, 10...
counting DEC: 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16...
counting OCT: 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20...
counting BIN: 00000, 00001, 00010, 00011, 00100, 00101, 00110, 00111, 01000, 01001, 01010, 01011, 01100, 01101, 01110, 01111, 10000...

evaluating HEX: in powers of "sixteen" (F+1). 246 = 2*10^2 + 4*10^1 + 6*10^0 where 10 represents "sixteen"
evaluating DEC: in powers of ten (9+1). 246 = 2*10^2 + 4*10^1 + 6*10^0 where 10 represents "ten"
evaluating OCT: in powers of eight (7+1). 246 = 2*10^2 + 4*10^1 + 6*10^0 where 10 represents "eight"
evaluating BIN: in powers of two (1+1). 246 = 2*10^2 + 4*10^1 + 6*10^0 where 10 represents "two"

HEX 246 = DEC 582. DEC 246 = HEX F6.
OCT 246 = DEC 166. DEC 246 = OCT 366
The digits 2, 4, & 6 do not exist under the binary system, but the binary representation of BIN 246 is BIN 10110 = DEC 22. DEC 246 = BIN 11110110.

Those who understood before are no better off, and those who did not understand are now more confused. Lesson big success.

Okay, it's time for some simple jokes...everyone post your favorites. Here are a few of mine:

Q-What's brown and sticky?
A-A stick.

Q-What did the farmer say when he lost his tractor?
A-He said, "I lost my tractor."

Yeah, I know those are lame...sorry. I have a test tomorrow in my media law class, and the studying is driving me crazy. This is my only escape from the madness...LOL. Right now I'm amused by the fact that the initials of "statute of limitations" are SOL.

EDIT - It's not really a simple joke, but did I ever mention my "4 is cosmic" thing here? I don't remember. If I haven't, let me know and I'll explain it...it's kinda fun.

A little clarity to add to the above lesson:

The important thing is that you understand as a number is incremented, (1 is added to it) the digit in the last column goes up one, until it reaches the specified value to "overflow" on.

In our number system (decimal) that value is 9. Add one to 9, and you get 10 (one times ten to the power of 1 + zero times ten to the power of 0).

-----
-0-5- (plus 1 causes no overflow)
-----
-0-6-
-----

-----
-0-9- (plus 1 causes overflow to next column)
-----
-1-0-
-----

Add one to 19, and you get 20 (two time ten to the power of 1 + zero times ten to the power of 0).

-----
-1-9- (plus 1 causes overflow to next column)
-----
-2-0-
-----

In octal, that value is 7. Add one to 7, and you also get 10 (eight, not ten) (one times eight to the power of 1 + zero times eight to the power of 0). etc.

-----
-0-7- (plus 1 causes overflow to next column)
-----
-1-0-
-----

So the difference between the number systems is the overflow value. In electronics, we designed counters (using flipflops) that use whatever number system. The idea is to tell it when it is to overflow. Give something an overflow value of this many: ****************** (decimal 18) and it'll count nonadecimal. This means it overflows when a column passes "18" (most likely represented as capital "I") and the next column is incremented.

PS this formatting is a pain in the bum...

Joe Satriani's guitar work is brilliant and practicing his songs, or parts of them, can only improve your skills- not to mention how fun it can be. But I've gotten to the point where I'm tired of learning just the melodies and slower stuff, time to tackle the solos, but that stuff is sometimes wicked hard to accurately decipher by ear. I'm a fairly fast player, I can handle speed but not if I can't make out the notes in the first place. I've seen a couple digital devices that can slow down tracks to 1/2 speed without changing the pitch- but I don't know how big of a help that would really be. Does anyone here have one of these, and if so, how helpful are they?

I think I've posted this before but here goes my favorite joke:
2 muffins are in the middle of being baked in an oven and it's starting to really get hot. One muffin looks at the other and says "Damn, dude...it's getting REALLY hot in here...we need to get the hell out or we're both screwed! The other muffin turns to him and says
...
wait for it
...
Holy shit! A talking muffin! ;)
Just thought I'd add...LOTS of Pulp +1

Okay let's be pedantic, the overflow value for that example is actually not 18 but 19, and the overflow values for octal, hexadecimal, decimal and binary are 8, 16, 10, 2 respectively. When 1 is added to a number which becomes the overflow value (instead of what I said before), the value becomes 0, and the next column is incremented.

Have edited previous post so many times I can't be stuffed doing it again.

Hey Joe, look forward to seeing the DVD stuff. Is it a double DVD, or just a double CD? I'm pretty sure you could fit it on one DVD. Might have to be multilayered of course.

Juju: well I can't think of any musical instruments that you'd need to know any of that for, except maybe knowledge of the decimal number system may come in handy...

Oh yeah (everyone), in music an octave goes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (1), 9 (2), 10 (3), etc, so the octave uses the septal numbering system, where it overflows on 8 (like octal) and skips 0 (unlike octal).

Yikes it's nearly tea time. Well too bad, I can't be bothered cooking anything since I cooked steak for lunch so I'll just eat some sliced multigrain bread...yummm. Later all, BEN
