Invigor: I don't think anyone thought you were dumb, just wrong in this case. Of course it is impossible to be wrong in matters of opinion so who's dumb now. I see the point you were trying to make though. If I tried to do a cover of say Crushing Day, it would be like you said, I couldn't do it so I made up something else. But where you and I differ is that I wouldn't want to do a note for note cover of Crushing Day. You seem to be using the original song as a grading scale where I see it as a starting point. Also, Guitar Secrets is a great book. What little of it I understand has helped tremendously.

hehe, sorry about that.I was gonna keep going too! lol.
I see where you are coming from though, I have a lot of boots, and On of of my DT boots, JP completely flubs up the hardest lick in the song "Scarred", instead of a smooth legato, he starts picking as fast as possible on a three note pattern and just moves it up the fretboard chromatically.Totally Inti-climatic.EDIT:(huh?inti? supposed to say Anti-Climatic.I improvised that word) :D
Also a Vai boot I have, on "I would love to", towards the end there is a sick lick, and instead he just did sloppy intervalic slides.Lame.
now, in defense, it was an off night for Vai, I have other performances of his where it seems like he is a god, just amazing.
And the same for petrucci, when you play 3-4 hour shows, you are gonng miss a lick here and there.
I know if I could call him up, he could play me the lick over the phone right now, lol.
Actually JOE could you call up JP right now and make him play that lick for you?lol.
You know, keep him on his toes :D
I gotta say, Satch is the most accurate player I have ever seen live, followed by Steve Morse. He avoids mistakes like the world would end if he made one, and he improvises all the time!Amazing.
I always marvel at that, and am baffled how any body could fault him (if you spend any time at other guitar related sites, there is a lot of Satch and Vai bashing, and it's baffling some of the criticisms these people dish out.Sad.)

I don't get the Satch/Vai bashing that's out there either. Maybe it's because as far a instumentalists go, these guys have had long, consistently sucessful careers. I don't know though, I just don't get it. Nice word improv there Ethn, way to wangle that lick!

firstly my prayers are with the families of the crew of the columbia.
about the whole improv argument what i was speeking out against was people saying they can play the song when they cannot play the solo. improv is an art of its own and i happen to improv quiite a lot but an improv can never really be better than a solo cos if it was it would have been the solo. anyway thats how i feel bout that.
ALL GUITAR PLAYERS here is an exersize i found is well good for practicing your improv. if you have a cd player in the room where u practice put on a song and then just solo above it. ill get some of mine on iuma soon. Appetite for destruction has good songs for doin this.
sorry bout the long post.
and the usual
JOE PLEASE PLAY THE LONDON ASTORIA.

My master Sensei Alphonzo, long since passed away, came to me today in spirit, during my afternoon meditation. His words were brief yet, cryptic.
He said to me, "Learn the great Debate solo, but play it left handed. The honeys will like that" I do not understand, was this really my master, or am I privy to the mechanations of:
The Dark Shred....
I must rest on this.

I am me: You ask why those special JS guitars like JS10 are so rare? Well, of course we all want one, but if everyone did own a JS10, then it wouldn't be special anymore, right? Plus, the theory of supply and demand means the price can be way up there!
The Columbia crew, rest in peace.

i do indeed know what you mean, dude. but (imho) at the end of the day it's all music, it's all healthy, we enjoy it. where's the real harm in that? horses for courses, to each his own, one man's meat is another man's poison (insert your own old-wife's saying here), etc, etc, etc
right... more dog things to do, and i have to start dismantling my studio for the imminent house move &-( later all, dave

and about the EJ signature thing. Kirk Hammet is endorsed by ESP yet when he plays live he uses fenders and jacksons aswell as his ESP's.
John petrucci has two signature models and so does EVH. why doesnt EJ have a gibson and a fender. I just feel that he is too good not to have a signiture guitar. How can someone like steven carpenter (deftones guitarist) have one and then someone of the awseome playing ability like EJ not have one.

yeah Lights Of Heaven does seem kind of fitting doesn't it?
One has to feel sorry for the families of the 7 pioneers killed yesterday, as well as the other NASA pilots who were meant to fly Discovery and Atlantis in the next few years. The internationl space station and mars probe projects are going to have been severely damaged. One has to feel sorry for the two remaining shuttles themselves! Sounds crazy, but think of what they have accomplished. They have been blasted at stupid speeds against stupid forces to give us more information about the space we live in, and their future of doing the same hangs in the ballance as NASA decides whether to decommission them and build new, or spend ten years making sure they are going to work safely.
Look at Steve Vai's postcards from late last year - he talked in December about being invited to go and see one of Joe's gigs, and something Steve said was that he is always amazed by Joe's improvisation, and that he is perfect proof that with age comes experience, and with experience comes expression - Steve truly believes that Joe is always getting better, and i'm not going to argue. I have tried nothing of Steve's that I haven't liked, so i'm certainly going to trust him on this one.

John Petrucci only has one signature model, so does EVH.unless you consider the 7 string, and the wolfgang special a seperate mode.Maybe you meant JP has HAD 2 signature models?
I don't think EJ wants one.I don't see the point really. The difference between the Strat sig models is just stuff like woods, Neck profile, and pickups, or in YJM's case a scalloped fretboard.
What would eric's have different?he plays a relatively stock strat, he just replaces things like transistors and pickups, I think.(Don't correct me if Im wrong, I don't really care that much, lol.)

That's why I wrote "maybe you meant Jp has HAD 2 signature models"
Actually eddie has had like, 3 lol.
Kramer, Musicman, Peavey, and I *think* he was briefly with another company, Jackson maybe. Not positive about that one.
Anyways, I would like a signature model.Paint job could just be a post it note saying "I didn't have to pay for this shit, I rock!"on a black background.

Phry Dom: ....Moving?!?!
On the improv thingie....It is self expression, comes out of the heart, and it is a good thing....But, it is much better if you give it a better vibe and solo....For example....White Lion's version of "Radar Love"!!!!.......Much better than the original with the incomparable Vito Bratta!!!!!! Of course you add double bass drums and technology..wella!!
Anyone seen John Luini in the last month?!?!

My iuma is still screwy. Anyone besides Sharif and I having these problems. Same as last night, actual page looks fine but in artist uplink, no songs listed and in stat page all songs called on fire.
Heading to my grandmother's this morning. She wants to hear some of my music so I made her a grandma friendly cd. That was interesting.
