Things in scotland are great lol , no i've not heard of your cousin mate , sorry....paisley is 7 miles from glasgow , practically right nextdoor :) i'll look out for him on the music scene though , so how many people here are guitarists heheh ?!? , i looooove guitar , i wish i could play like satch etc though . meh .

yeah i agree , lets not change this into an arguement , everyone has thier own opinion dont they :) to say yngwie is alot better than vai or satch though is kind of silly , cos in most respects satch and vai could out play him ...easily.

what kinda guitars yaw'll got ? :D

Alright, the silly debate going om here is just that, silly!

The fact of the matter is, Vai is by no means overrated!!! The guy rules, end of story.

Tastey- Hold up--- Happy 400! :)

Austin- I didnt get a chance to watch last week because of the whole superbowl madness... This week I was sorely disappointed in though... I would love to take the Sociology of Sports class, I have done a bit of that through a couple of my anthropology classes, but a whole class! Puts a smile on my face just thinking about it... I wrote a research paper about the popularity, history, and psychology of fantasy sports teams and had a blast doing it... I ended up with the 7am class because at the time of enrollment I was still taking care of my great grandfather and he would still be sleeping by the time I made it home... Oh well...

Trutina- C word... BAD! lol... great quote though!

Anyway, Hope all in Satchland have a good afternoon...

Sounds really smooth, if only I knew a song I wanted to learn. lol

yngwie/satriani/vai remarks:

i forget who it was that said it, but that refers to stuff that was said by yngwie a long while ago. he's mellowed out considerably since then...

he tends to have something to say about every guitarist, most of it kind of a backhanded complement in one way or another.

ethn's a bit of an authority on thing's yngwie has said, as far as i'm concerned... he's pretty good about knowing what was actually said and in what context.

edit:
oo! exactly 1K for me! (that'll be the binary "K" and not the metrical augmentation "k") ;)

Ah i forgot to mention I also own an Aria STG Series, it was my first guitar which my momma bought me :). Great guitar to learn on.

[Edit][MEMEGTR] Its a shame, I for one think that Kurt Cobain is too high up in the list as well, Toni Iommi is too low down (86th for christmas pudding sake!!!!) and the same with Adam Jones of Tool. There are some guitarists I like I feel are over-rated (Cobain) and guitarists I dont like who are under-rated...cant think of an example but yes they're there.

Alexandre, haha, funny you should mention Nuno doing a DVD next - later this month a limited edition CD/DVD of Nuno will be released; it's the 'guitar wars' thing with Paul Gilbert and others. Mikey D knows a bit more about it than I do!!

I've been gone for 2 nights and there's 14 pages to check through. I hate to think how much there will be after I come back from my week in the US!
Sammy Andrews, if you get a chance, check out a Paul Gilbert video - his picking exercises are great cuz it's what he swears by
Ovation1, you maybe like the Jem necks better than the PGM? that's interesting. I found the PGM so easy to pick up and play, it felt very familiar, but I think that may be because it's close to my RG neck. The binding helps that. I dunno, the PGM felt really easy to play Nuno-type rhythm stuff on, which is odd cause it should feel really easy to play ridiculosuly cool shred on. Oh hang on, I can't play any ridiculously cool shred, so that's why it didn't feel that way! hehe

about Vai's honey - I bet it's fast, and I bet it's well-dresed, and I bet it can make noises that just shouldn't be possible! haha, and I bet the use-by date on the Jar keeps getting scribbled out then re-written because it's not ready to go off yet! hehe

Davey Wavey, hehe "I'll get me coat".....respect bro!
The Farting Gnome, the SRV strat costs a lot, and the relic Strat costs loads, so a combination of both will surely leave Fender asking us for about 3.5 grand or more?!

yeah, I'm also visiting the amazon site frequently at the moment cause i'm waiting for this bloody DVD, oh and a digital camera! I'm ordering it now, and I need it to arive on wednesday - that's optomism!

Ethn, I dunno, I think lots of people record and produce examples of stuff played faster than Joe, but I don't think that means Joe isn't capable. From what I understand, he really is a monster in a lot of different disciplines, but his head is oriented towards the music, not the note density, so I think he could surprise us if he wanted to.

That said, people like Petrucci, Belsky and Gilbert have insane right-hand technique! it's clinical, especially Petrucci!

Jazz Man, amen to Ovation 1 on his response - I'm also sure Joe would be upset at what you said about Steve. Joe exclusively selects his fellow-players and obviously has great respect for the people who he plays with. Steve has oceans of talent just like Joe does, and is equally creative in the musical sphere. I know we are all entitled to our own opinion so fair enough, you may not like him, but you should be able to acknowledge the fact that he's an extremely clever guy. Hell, I'm a huge fan and I don't like some of his stuff, but i know it's clever from an artistic point of view.

yes we can expect more, cause this May's shows in amsterdam will demonstrate his ability to write music for himself supporting a symphony orchestra. oh, and Steve doesn't drink!

btw. your post at TASTEY was a bit rude (in my opinion), that's no way to talk to a lady.

as a general comment, I've heard a lot of sh*t against Dr Vai lately and it's getting silly. People like to hate people. I heard Guthrie Govan (misspelled?) suggest that Vai is a great guy but every Jem owner is a Vai clone? what? And he said that the Jem is characterless and bland. what? He also said that Joe is great if you're lazy and you only want to play legato, but that's about it. how rude! Joe is creative, and his music is melodic, unlike some people's!
TheA, welcome! nice post about Joe, by the way! hehe. we have discussed the format of the board a few times before, and the general consensus is that this format is nice cause it's more personal. I like it, it's less messy.

I apologise sincerely for the double post. I feel bad, but that's what happens when there's 14 pages worth responding to! I'll have to be conservative after I've been away for a whole week!
Chris Woodland, Steve was transcribing for Frank at 17, cause Frank said he wouldn't let an under-20-year-old be in his band. I think he actually gave up and said "oh go on then" when Steve was 19, almost 20!
skydivineinstein, yeah it'd be great to see Eric Johnson back on G3! I'd also love to see Andy Timmons and Nuno Bettencourt on there, and Paul Gilbert and Steve Lukather would be great too!
DelfinoPie, I don't believe in getting rid of gifts either, stick with that guitar dude! Yeah, Joe took lessons from a Piano teacher, I believe.
Gbloke, maybe you should be one of the first to get a new Ibanez S series with the ZR trem. it looks like a cool idea, and aparrently it's pretty stable too.

DAVEY WAVEY- but remember win2k and winxp are NT based operating systems, they wont just install on any given hardware config like 98 will...it has to be a stable hardware config for the OS to run stable, sure downloading is just downloading but i run photoshop, various video editing applications and burn DVD's all day long without a hiccup, on win 98 i'd have to reboot every 3 hours because it's resource management was horrible. BTW havent restarted since i posted last, not that it's a big thing but the convenience factor is great.

stu not boo - that's true, granted, definitely- however, california is enormous... guildford's a pretty small city even by English standards. nick, yoda and I all live within 2 miles of one another. So i'm just talking density of people really...california's bigger than the UK if i'm not mistaken, so I could include all the English T2Jers which are quite a few...

but granted, californ I-A is clearly has a large representation here.

clarky- about the concept album/romantic song cycle... i mean there are just a lot of similarities, structurally. the fact that it is cyclic and will often have themes cropping up all over the place. the fact that the songs are often linked directly into one another, the fact that there are lyrics, they usually tell a story, and then that they often end with the same way they start... it just seemed exactly the same thing but in the romantic idiom instead of 1960s onward...

Dont get me wrong there Gary I know from a few fellow players that Joe and Vai will always come first in "MOST PEOPLE'S OPINIONS" (just in case any fannys out there get the wrong idea). Most find out from my parents more about my cousin to see if he is up to that sickening standard! I play an American Fender strat but when trying some really flash stuff it can be more difficult than if you were using a chrome boy or a Vai machine. What is ure own weapon of choice?

Meany Guts: LOL weapon of choice...best phrase Ive heard in a long while...[applauds].

I won't be getting rid of my Telecaster ever...its a lovely guitar. I'm sure to buy more of them in the future...when I'm not so finicially unstable (aka broke).

I think a guitar I like the look of is the Ibanez EDR 470 or an orange S160. Looks like the kinda guitar I'd want to customize to make my own :)

Glad to hear you got a laugh out of that DelfinoPie!

I would spend the entire day here trying to make conversion with all you interesting guys but that would mean neglecting my college work!! That would be just really terrible..... NOT!!!!! But I will also be neglect practicing my beloved guitar and never be able to play one of Joe's mighty tunes!

I just new to you lot but i'll be around a lot more in the future (And i don't mean 2020!!). Anyway good luck flokes and keep the tips of those fingers hard!

S1220: Yeah, I figured you'd go with the FRED and the PAFPRO haha! They're mean pu's. The Air pu's I recommended are definitely made for smoother lead sounds.

Do The Stu: Simpsons is really going in the crapper. They've forgetten the social sarcastic commentary that the show was built on and now the script seems written just to pay off one lame ass punch line after another. The only thing that could save the show is if Conan O'Brien started writting scripts again (you know he wrote the famous monorail episode).

As far as the whole Vai debate goes.....he's an amazing guitarist with unlimited expressive abilities. I love alot of his work, but where he goes wrong is the fact that he tries too hard sometimes to write weird songs a la Frank Zappa. The only thing is that when Zappa wrote crazy crap it still worked in a pleasing jazzy way in most cases. Sometimes Vai misses, but at least he's got the balls to go out on a limb for music.

Okay...now for the speed debate...I went to the recent G3 show, and with the 3 guys together, no one was really apreciablly faster than the other...they just favored different techniques.....Joe uses more legato (however did tremelo pick very fast at times), Steve uses more tapping, and Yngwie sweeps and tremelo picks mostly. As far as the important part goes(who played the cleanest and improved the best) that goes to Joe hands down....nuff said.

One last thing....Neil Zaza would be great for G3, although he kindof sounds like a Satch clone...
