Interesting blog about Chickenfoot from Bob Lefsetz, apparently some music industry insider guy (I've never heard of him): http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2009/05/12/down-the-drain/

Overall very positive about the new stuff, though I have to vehemently disagree with his opening dig on Joe's solo career:

I don’t know what’s happening with that Coldplay lawsuit, especially now that Cat Stevens has weighed in, but I’ve always thought Joe Satriani has had better chops than material.  That’s the plight of too many of these eighties guitar superstars, they had technique, they spent 10,000 hours practicing in their bedrooms, they just neglected to take any SONGWRITING CLASSES!

See, I've always contended that what sets Joe Satriani apart from the myriad of other shredders from the 80s and beyond is his ability to write good songs around the instrumental guitar. For years, I've marveled at how simple the structure of Joe's songs can be, while simultaneously sounding very fresh and innovative. That, to me, is the mark of a master songwriter. The fact that he's such an incredible technical player is just very sweet icing on the cake.

I think most people, like this guy, hear the technical gymnastics and stop listening to the underlying song structure, which is the real heart of the music. They dismiss the music as cold and emotionless, technical wizardry without feeling and musicianship. As we all know, this couldn't be further from the truth.

These people see the exquisite icing and walk away, assuming there's no cake underneath. In reality, the cake is not only there, but it's amazing and puts the icing to shame.

Dang, now I'm hungry! ;) My $0.02 for the day.

satchblues - I don't know much about Bob Lefsetz either, but I don't think I like him very much.

I first read something from him last year...he was eating lunch with the Dave Matthews Band's manager when the call came in that their sax player had died...he blogged about it (here). It's kind of neat to hear his almost firsthand account of it all, but the whole piece has this "Are they going to play tonight? Wow, they did...awesome!" feel that just seems arrogant and inappropriate considering what had happened.

I read his blog post on Chickenfoot and he sounds uninformed in just about every way possible. His comments on Satch's music sound like the only song he's listened to is If I Could Fly, which he probably did to try to be educated on the lawsuit. And the things he has to say about Van Halen? I love Eddie's music, but to say he's not writing anything new because he's "afraid of taking risks"? Yeah, right... There are a whole mess of problems in that band, and I don't think that's among them...

Anyway, I'm preaching to the choir...

...Austin...

Hey Joe, in terms of playing styles, who would you say is the most versatile guitar player out there today? Eric Johnson perhaps? Just curious as to your thoughts....

Good Aternoon Satchland.... How Is Everyone?

Cappy..... I haven't ben' around here lately and saw you were postin'. Good to see you again me friend.

Mr Roids..... I own a JSX amp. This amp is capable of many sounds and is very responsive. For creamy distortion I'd try all the knobs at 12:00 for the Crunch and Ultra channels and adjust for taste from there. With knobs set try lowering the gain a bit. My amp sounds best when the gain is around 2 #'s lower then the volume. ie: volume at 6 gain at 4. I like the treble and mids set at 12:00 with bass at 8. Like I said this amp is very responsive and little tweaks make a huge difference. Click Here for JSX settings. There's a setting taken from one of Joe's shows. This will definitely get you started. Good Luck -

Have A Great Evening Everyone !!!!!
