michelle/Austin, in the DVD commentary, does it show the audience's reaction to what he said about Jimi? cuz on the friday night they weren't very impressed! they just all went "ooooh" although some people, myself included, laughed. Yeah at the show I was at there was a girl right in the middle (givin him the eager eye all night) and yeah, U.R.A.Q.T. is kinda what I thought! haha

MatthiasElMariachi, you're posting the same post? that's not much appreciated, but anyway, Joe is responsible for asking people to be the third 'G' on a G3 tour. He has asked a load of people, and some have declined, but it's all up to Joe really.

What do you mean by "What is about the years 1999 and 2002?" is it cuz that's the years there was no tour, cuz i doubt if there's much of a reason!

Master Yoda, you've written something that you can't actually play? I usually do that, often in my head. I come up with so much cool stuff, and sometimes I try it, and haven't a clue how to play it! hehe. Don't be disappointed in yourself having jammed with Clarky - it's easy to be hard on yourself when you play alongside someone who does stuff you can't, but every guitarist has something they can teach every other guitarist. A lot comes out of what's in your head!
UF Dean, which Panama City are you referring to? the one in Panama? if so, I'm envious....please let me know what it's like! If not then...nevermind!
OCPS470, I will be wanting to hear that tune of yours when it's done! Virtual Vintage is good huh? that's cool....yeah when I heard Andy Timmons I thought he must be using a Seymour Duncan Strat pickup in his Ibanez, but then I found out it was a DiMarzio! Such good tone......DiMarzio impress me a lot, they deserve more credit I think
Xerpac, well the insturmental guitar thing came out of other areas, so you need to mention people who sometimes sang too. Chet Atkins is important for the blues thing, as is BB, then more recently Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi for the more guitar-solo-oriented stuff. Also include Jeff Beck, Brian May, Eric Clapton, Robert Fripp, Jimmy Page - they all started playing proper guitar styles which took real practice and technique. Frank Zappa started doing crazy things with guitar.

Al Di Meola was responsible for really igniting fusion guitar playing, kinda jazzy and very technical. He played a lot with Paco DeLucia who is the flamenco guitar idol, and is also technically masterful.

In recent years, there was Eddie Van Halen, followed by Joe and Steve, Eric Johnson and Yngwie Malmsteen, followed by Paul Gilbert, Nuno Bettencourt, Zakk Wylde, Jon Petrucci, Kirk hammet to and extent - these are all the relatively "new school", whereas Chet Atkins, BB, May and Page were the "old school" - the others were the middle-ground.

Instrumental guitar playing has been supported largely by progressive rock (King Crimson, Emmerson Lake and Palmer) which took influences from blues, rock and roll, jazz, classical....you name it, it's in there.

Kandhi, welcome to the world of Joe and his website! And your english is clear enough to understand!

Ollyno1, mate, do you know which area of the terrace rows CC and BB are in? I hope it's not right over to one side, up against a wall or an emergency exit or something. Tell me nearer the time what seat number you have and I'll see if I can see you!

My sister is going to the one in London too, and called me today and asked if I want to go! cool! 2 G3 concerts in 3 days! with Toto on the night in between!

Shred 777, are you a Vai fan, by any chance?! welcome to t2j! I agree with the others - the more you know the more windows it opens, but practice is the important thing - Joe was in a large way self-taught, so I guess he did a lot of figuring-out-for-himself. Mix learning for yourself with learning from a teacher and you'll find it really good!
TASTEY, good luck with home-seeking! I think the cost thing is all relative to the average earnings of an area. People tend to earn a lot in Boston, for example, but then it costs lots to live there. Same as London, same as a lot of places actually! hehe. London isn't a patch on Boston tho - Boston is the dog's bollocks, it's so nice!

dck - I hope you're not jumping to conclusions regarding my sexual orientation..

not guilty your honour...

nick - the interesting thing about these 'chords of the 6th' is finding interesting ways of applying them in a modern setting.. if you listen carefully to my own stuff [Shredz at an Exhibition] you'll find it riddled with such stuff as German 6ths, Nea-6ths, Plagal Cadence, Interrupted Cadence, Tierce de Picardi, Appogiatura, Acciacatura, Suspension etc etc..

the challenge is to be almost not quite even remotely as clever as the great composers [dispite my feable efforts] and still maintain the brutal thug essence applicable to the "pit du mosh" [which is what Clarky's do the best]

the strap thingy... the intention is - for me at least - that the seated and standing playing experience are as similar as can be.. no point in me sitting in the studio cutting licks that I have absolutey no chance of delivering when standing up on stage.. I'd look a bigger prat than I do already... lol

talking thru the mic to the crowd at a gig...
"thank you!!.. yeah!!.. and this next one is a song from our latest album.. this is a song.. that is really hard.. where's my chair..."

supaadave - here's my UIMA

http://artists2.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Paul_Clark/

enjoy..

Yoda -in addition to the views of my harmony lecturer - who thought para 4ths are used by sinners and they should be burned alive - and my analysis lecturer - who thought they're reasonably ok and not too sinfull so if you thrust in a few she might just get a little flustered but wouldn't tell anyone if I didn't - So I adopted the practical approach and quickly found - after a little experimentation - that para 4ths are about as musically interesting as para 5ths, 8ves and drying paint.. so I just avoided them anyhow 'cos they sound like shit in 4 part harmony.. and I wanted all my compositions to be well within the laws of the period I was composing for and to sound beautiful too... apart from when you're composing in the style of Bartok or Berg and then it is supposed to sound like shit...

writing authentic stuff - like my lil' Baroque quartet - is really hard.. the trick is to work on the melody and bass first pretty much right through to the end.. and be ready to erase lots of stuff when working out the inner voices...

so is Virtus Junxit giving you ideas to expermint with... if so.. great.. this is definately challenging and character building stuff... it's kinda like doing a mad crossword with sound..

Lots of messages...ok, here we go;

slanshroom: You spelled Kaustinen just right. Isn't that a Festival of folk music? What do you play (both instrument and genre)? Happy that you enjoyed your visit. About the beauty of our country; you should see it like this on winter too, we've got over 60 cm of snow at the moment and the spring sun glitters...and soon my feet will get wet. Did you already make up with your girlfriend? ; )

masterpick: Don't know why anyone hasn't mentioned "Alien love secrets" when you asked about the best S Vai album. Perhaps they don't consider it as an album, cause it's got only 7 tracks? Anyway it's bad!!! (and I've got all of them).

Clarky and others who agree: I totally agree your comment for JazzyBoy's question about the best Pink Floyd album. "Wish You Were Here" and "The Wall" expanded my consciousness alot on my younger years (music itself is my dope).

Xerpac: Really don't know why anyone hasn't mentioned STEVE MORSE when you asked for noteworthy instrumental guitar music players! If you haven't heard of him, you should absolutely check him out (his early years too with Dixie Dregs). He has been selected the best rock guitarist and the best overall guitarist quite a many times in Guitar Player magazine (anybody correct me, if I'm wrong). These days he plays with Deep Purple, which was quite a nice surprice for me when it happened, cause I've always been a DP fan too.

Joe Satriani (himself): See you in Helsinki next summer. When are you gonna come here (in Finland) with two Steves? I'd even sell my moped for that :-D

stringG: Hi, dude! I'm listening my sons snoring right now, but I'll change that soon for Ben Granfelt. He's a finnish guy who has listened Joe too for sure. Go check him out at his website, there are some samples too: www.bengranfelt.com

...and that last one was free for all! (I don't understand those link including tips, cause I've only just started my chat life)

Peace (from the professional soldier)

Fretslayer, I loved Skid Row back in the day! Is it still the original line-up? Have fun man!

tastey, Ben's in a new movie coming out. Can't remember what it is though. I only saw the commercial once, but it looked like a good one. It's so refreshing to see him without J.Lo. They make me wanna hurl when I see them together. She should have stuck with Chris Judd.

Hi anibur!

Simon, I can't remember what the crowds reaction was. I think they laughed?

Still no signed cd booklet in todays mail. F'ers! lol!

edit - Slanshroom, "Orgasm beer" - sounds like a scene from the movie American Pie *gag*. lol!

Hey Slanshroom, you think that Strat with "bowling ball" material would make it easier for YJM to roll/slide his guitar off stage to his techy LOL!!!! He usually did that with G3 when he was expected to play a few chords!!! YJM no likey chords!!!!

TASTEY/Michelle: Skid Row got a new singer a few years back, and have been touring with him. They put out a new cd called "Thickskin" Aug 03' Check it out it's a great rockin' album. I wasn't really interested in Skids without Sebastian Bach, but I saw them open for Poison last summer and they really impressed me. The new tunes sounded sick live, so when the cd came out about a month later i bought it. It definitely does not dissapoint!

Jazzyboy: I think that's drummer Kenny Arnoff.

Clarky - Not necessarily 'Virtus Junxit...', but every track. Normally if I was to modulate I'd just go BANG and there's your new key (like on 'Into The Fire' where it just jumps to D minor for the solo, and then modulates in minor thirds until it reaches the original key of B minor). Our little jam and your album has inspired me to actually do what I know how to do - I know about pivot chord modulations etc., but I never used to apply them in a contemporary compositional sense. This new track is a rock track, but there's one section where it shifts from C minor to Eb minor with the following progression: Cm7 - Abmaj7 - Bb7sus4 - Bb7 - Ebm. So it's a little more thought out than just suddenly playing a new key. I wanted strings to provide the main harmony since the guitar part is just power chords, and I wanted it to sound authentic. It's all sorted now - I've obeyed all the 'rules'. It was fun because I haven't done anything like that really since my A Levels.

Hi, I'm Bil's fiancee, Miranda. Bil had asked me to post a message here if things got bad and now they have. Last thursday the doctors changed his anti-seizure medicine and his body rejected it. He collapsed here at home and quit breathing. His heart stopped in the ambulance and twice at the hospital. He stabilized enough on saturday to be taken off life support but is still in a coma. The doctors are concerned with how long he went without oxygen. I can only hope the CPR was enough to keep his brain alive. Bil would kill me for this, because he isn't at all relegious, but I beg you all to pray for him. He loves this place and everyone here very much and talks about you all often. I feel strange telling you all this, not knowing any of you. I came here several times over the last few days and haven't been able to finish typing this. I don't know what else to say. I'll come back when I know more. If anyone wants to, they can email me at Bil's address since I'm using his screen name. Thank you all for listening.

There is also a DVD that came out in 2003 by a band named Hawkwind called Love in Space. I'm bored... surfing the net... thought maybe putting Is there Love in Space? in a search engine would maybe bring up something about Joe's new album and it brought up this other stuff.
