BOO.... ya yo here... whats been going on? i've been moving from one place to the other, still trying to get the internet hooked up over there so i come back to the old pad to use the net... my cousin came down from oregon for 3 weeks, did the disneyland thing... the guy is incredible on the piano...he busted out polonaise by Chopin, a bunch of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Schumann stuff...it's funny cause he taught himself by ear, and tried to join the school band (high school) and they told him he was better than everyone put together but he couldn't join cause he couldn't read music....so he taught himself LOL. he wants to go to a conservatory or something....my aunt told me he cried when he got off the plane cause he didnt want to go home, he hates home....but if you lived in oregon, then spent 3 weeks in san diego and had to go back you'd hate home too LOL. he even picked up my guitar and started playing classical stuff by ear, and he's never really played guitar so i gave him my jackson. i played the live in san francisco DVD for him and he was mesmerized, he calls joe a master, musical genius, a viruoso of epic proportions... i told him joe would say "nahh...i just play what i feel" lol... thats basically my summer thus far...still taking psychology classes at college, doing physiological psychology now... probably gonna take behavioral science statistics in the fall though i hate math with a passion... stay safe & healthy everyone, rock on joe...

Greetings, Satchland~!

Finally, a chance to post~!

Zenfish ~ thanks for remembering me :)

I have some questions for you and anyone here on T2J about progressive music, and SBM. Without meaning to sound obtuse, I would like to further refine the definition of progressive, by looking at the following questions and providing examples from Joe's work:

o can a 12-bar ever be considered progressive?
o is a non-traditional time-signature always considered de facto progressive?
o can progressive be defined (in part) by non-standard harmonic structures, alternate tunings, dissonant chords, or preponderance of dissonance?

Lastly, would you go through SBM track-by-track and tell me what specifically you find progressive about each song? I'm truly curious.

Here is my first-draft (totally from memory, I"m at work) list of songs by Joe I think sound "progressive":

Flavor Crystal 7
Trundrumablind
With Jupiter in Mind
Cool #9
Luminous Flesh Giants
Killer Bee Bop
Echo
The Enigmatic
Memories

ultra_zone and Do The Stu ~ about the child's voice in the beginning of fiabd: I've always assumed this might be "kids say the darndest things" ~ an adult is apparently interviewing the child, and I believe they are discussing a parent or sibling getting ready for a date ~ I can't make out the first part, but I can clearly hear the child say, "...they get ready for each other" ~ then you can barely hear the adult saying, "what about afterwards?" and the child replies, "sometimes afterwards they still like each other, and sometimes they don't".

so, do I win something? LoL :-)

Hi to everyone

Yesterday I got to see the Eric Steckel Band in New Hope, Pa about 20 minutes from my house. Closest show I EVER went to! He has played there about 8 times in the past and I MISSED it, shit! Oh well, I didn't know about him then. He looks like he is about 10 years old, such a little guy. I had him sign my CD before the show and I told him I just saw Jimmy Vaughn in NYC at BB King's onThursday and I gave him Eric's CD. He was really happy, I will do what I can to help this phenom out! Trust me. Eric just got back from touring the Netherlands with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakes. I missed him by a week! Eva and I saw posters for Johm Mayall around Stockholm. Damn! He said the tour went really well. Eric used to live 45 min from me but his family just moved to Fla, St Petes maybe?Sucks! All you Floridians KEEP YOUR EYES OUT FOR ERIC STECKEL BAND! I will be keeping my eye on this kid, he ROCKS! Before Eric came on for his set I went up to his father, introduced myself and asked permission to take photos. No problem. I also told him I had met Jimmy Vaughn and had given him Eric's CD. He was thrilled! He said to me that he heard Jimmy is not to kuul on kids playing guitar. I don't know why cause he was one of those kids, so was Stevie. Jimmy did say "I hope he says in school." I said I was sure he would. I told this to his father. So maybe he wishes he and Stevie finished school. I know Stevie didn't. When you can play like Stevie it wasn't necessary. IMO. Education is very important, but Stevie got his education in the Blues elsewhere! I know Stevie was 1 in a billion! There will never be another Stevie. Eric Steckel will be the next Blues force to be rekoned with. I'd put money on that! Kenny Wayne Sheppard was the next up and coming but he hasn't been hungry! Eric is hungry!

Hey Austin,

I went to the signing Joe had at Tower Records in Concord a couple months back. Very Cool.

I won't find out exactly what seat I will be in until I get my ticket in the mail. They mail 'em about 2 weeks before the show, I guess. But, I do know that I am guarenteed a seat in Row 1 thru 5. How 'bout you?

Never been to "The Greek", but have heard it's a great place for a show. Am much looking forward to this concert, I've never seen him in concert (besides his DVD's, of course). I know I am going to be amazed, to say the least.

So Eric is bouncing off the walls. He is so anxious to play! He didn't wait for the other band to get off the stage before he got up there.LOL! Well, he is only 14 and it was his birthday. He's a kid, they have no patience! lol! It was so refreshing to see his excitement! He tore up the joint!!! I'm telling you, HE ROCKS!!!

His set lasted hour and 45 min. I was sitting on the floor cause the stage was only 8 inches high, and he's like 4 foot tall. His Dad was sitting next to me when Eric started playing. I said to him:OMG!! HE"S AWESOME!!!!! He said thank you! So proud! The kid is amazing!!! If you like the Blues you NEED to check him out!!! You will not be disappointed, especially if you get to see him live. He writes his own songs too! How about that?! His Dad comes up and tells him he has 20 mins left and can play 3 songs. Eric says 4. His Dad says 3! Eric says 4! hehe! Okay 3 he says. For the last song he played Red House! He sings also, it's funny but he sings good. When he sings you can tell he's young, NOT when he plays. Then he went into this WICKED jam, it ws awesome! So Eric got his 4! LOL! Oh I was in heaven! I loved every moment! This is what life is all about. For me it is! I cant' believe I went 18 years without live music. Thank God I'm Back!!! I think I appreciate it that much more! I know i do! It makes life so worth living! I live for great music!

I shot 6 rolls but there was liitle lighting to speak of and the background was crappy. I can work with what I got, I hope. I bought another CD (my 3rd) and had that one signed for a friend. I will also give Joe a CD. He needs to hear this kid! They packed up Eric's gear but I think the Band playing after him asked him to jam with them. So his dad had to unpack his amp, petals etc. We didn't stay. I wanted to, but my friend wanted to leave. That's why I go to shows by myself!! They brought out a guitar bithday cake for Eric! Full size! Really kuul! I wish i still had film left to take a photo of the cake, it was awesome! I was blown away by this 14 year old phenom! So glad I found him! Damn Straight! I gave his Dad my email / info and told him I will send him some photos.

Mahavishnu: The Rite of Strings. Stanley Clarke, Al Dimeola and Jon Luc Ponty.... what can I say....It was Most Awesome! I sat in the 9th row! I shot 4 or 5 rolls, not great photos. They will be okay. It was an incredible experience!!! Most excellent adventure! ;-0

Rock On My Friends!

Ya Yo Gakk - Thanks for stopping by...don't be a stranger!

jblaze1 - LOL...that's only half of my point.

His guitar is no different from the cheap ones that music stores sell, so it isn't right to single him out and say his guitars are crap. There is a market for cheap (less-expensive) guitars...I think this guy is doing a good thing. The people who are buying these guitars and learning how to play are probably people who wouldn't go down to a music store to do the same thing.

novjul - I know you're talking to Zenfish, but I thought I'd throw my two cents in as well (since you did ask for other opinions)...

First it's nearly impossible to define stuff like this. ;-)

I think a 12-bar blues can be considered progressive, but the guitar has to be playing more than just chords. In the end, it wouldn't be the 12-bar blues that makes the song progressive, it would be the crazy guitar solo played on top or the odd rhythm underneath the 12-bar blues that makes the song progressive.

No, an odd time signature doesn't automatically make something progressive. There are songs with odd time signatures, but they can be constructed in such a way that you don't notice they're odd...and they end up being pop songs. Look at Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill, for example. That song is in 7. Also, Rush is considered a progressive band, but listen to Free Will. It sounds like a "normal" pop song to most people, but if you count it out you'll see that it contains measures of 4, 6, 7, and 8. I guess you could argue that these songs are progressive, but they don't sound progressive.

Yes, I think you have a good definition for progressive. I'd also add something about longer song lengths... I'd say six to ten minutes is common for an average progressive song, while three to five minutes is common for your average pop song.

I think I only agree with about half of your list of progressive songs, but that doesn't mean anything really. I think With Jupiter In Mind, Cool #9, and Luminous Flesh Giants are more bluesy than progressive. I would add Woodstock Jam to the list, but I don't know if many people would agree with me.

marcelle - Ah, you did the tour package thing? Okay...

I went through Ticketmaster. I'm in section B, row something (R, I think), seats 129 and 131. Keep in touch...It'd be nice to meet up with you at the show.

The Greek Theatre is my favorite outdoor venue...you'll love it. I've been there three times...Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes, Dio / Deep Purple / The Scorpions, and G3 2003 (Satriani / Vai / Malmsteen). There are no bad seats there...it's awesome.

...Austin...

Austin,

I heard that Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy are to perform at this concert, as well. And, actually, heard that Joe isn't suppose to perform for very long. Have you heard anything like this?

By the way, I meant to ask you..........noticed you're a Bass player, do you, by chance, know Mike Bennett?? He's a Bass player for a hot local band in this area, known him for years. Anyway, he's very talented. Definitely the best bass player around this area. My best friend's boyfriend is the drummer for the band, Tommy Souza.(very hot drummer). Ted Davantzis is the songwriter, lead guitarist and leader of the band. They've really got it together. They Rock n' Roll! They're playing at the Whiskey Go-Go at the end of this month and opening for "Stix" in Ventura next month. A great bunch of guys! If you get a chance, you should check 'em out at The Whiskey. The name of the band is Maximum Force.

OVATION - Yea, I've been needing some Greg Howe for a while. But since I just had to ask my dad for $1000 so that I can get through the end of summer, when my financial aid comes in, I don't see any in the near future. That sucks for Bruce Bouilett. I know how that goes though I've had put down the ole-stick-n-wires because of tendonitis a few times.
