To the Webmaster
Just wandering about this forum, is there no way you could structure it in some way.
Have various topics we could discuss rather than the endless list of posts about nothing in particular.
Topics such as live events, favourite songs etc. It just seems that it's a free for all.
Sorry, don't mean to be critical but it's a real shame because I'm sure we could get some real good discussions going on certain things.

The board on "Friends of Live" is a pretty good one too.
On another subject, some of us in other parts of the world will not get to hear the Rockline show. Is it going to be available on here for us to listen to afterwards???

mick87 - as "do the stu" pointed out, bass and snare are the important bits, and then some overheads, XY. XY is a mic technique where you have one microphone taking all of the sound from one direction, and another taking it all from another direction- this gives you a stereo image (from two mono sources) when you pan one left and the other right.
I believe that the Beatles had drums recorded with just the two overheads and a kick drum mike but I may be wrong there. The 4 microphone setup mentioned by "do the stu" was used by yours truly, when recording the drums for Icelandic Sheep. Sadly, I don't think I mixed it all that well. Never mind.

/\/\ikey Yeah, I was also thinking along the lines of... <enter Joe's home studio>....
"Welcome to my underground lair" "Number Two - set that message as last read" "Frau Farbissener - give us a kiss, sweety" "Scott - get a life my son... Daddy loves you" "Mini-Me - those harmonic minor modes need to be faster!!!"

ovation - the backing track for the Raft is all done... next stop - cut the shredz.. unfortunately I'm working in Holland all next week so I'll have to do it when I get back.. I'll take an RG with me so I can at least get in plenty of practice in the hotel.. all that will remain will be the headache of mixing this thing...
Last night I did have one serious panic though.. I was bouncing the four rhythm guitars together and half way though everything just stopped with an error mesage 'memory full'.. I figured that there may be a lot of stuff on the disk so I backed up some other songs to CD and deleted them from disk... tried the bounce again... 'memory full'... I'm like "wahh? there's loads of space on disk now"... then I dug out the manual.. "the maximum size for a single song is 6.4Gb".. ok so I started deleting non-essential 'virtual tracks'... I re-save the song.. sing size = 6.19Gb... "wahh? where's my big stick? I'm gonna give that AW a good learning if it keeps this up..".. back to the manual.. I find a facility called 'optimise'.. this feature deletes the 'undo/redo data'.. so the lil' light bulb comes on in my lil' brain.. when recording, if I don't like something, stop the tape and start again, memory is still consumed by the undo feature.. there are 16 levels of undo.. in a big fat boy 15 minute track like the Raft that equates to a big pile of disk space.. happy that I do not need to undo anything I optimised the song.. its size dropped to 2.9Gb... woohooo.. the only down side is that should I want to rebounce my brass, strings choirs or drums, I'll need to re-record them.. I should have therefore optimised before stripping out these virtual tracks... so no major harm done and nothing that can't be easily mended if need be...
the Raft is sounding very nice right now.. one last thing to figure out come mix down for the icing on the cake... this is 'scene changes'.. the AW can memorise all of the fader, eq, fx, pan etc settings as a 'scene'.. should I wish to alter things at a different part of the song [like the quiet middle section] and can move things around and save a new scene. The AW and Cubase are hooked together via MIDI so I can use Cubase to switch scenes at predetermined points within the song... kind of a 'poor mans' servo controlled mixing desk.. this will make mixing so much easier... fun stuff..
the track coming next is Requiem.. should be nice and simple, nice and quick.. I'm looking forward to that one as it makes for a nice contrast to the blood and thunder of the Raft..
I'm really looking forward to it

Fussion - remind me again middle of next week to check the track out... I'll have more free time when I'm lounging around in a hotel in Holland..
the tone on my IUMA stuff is my Zoom 9002 PRO.. it's my travel rig [not my stage / studio rig].. I recorded the IUMA stuff in hotel rooms whilst traveling around Europe working..
the configuration is...
Sony MD diskman [backing track] --> Zoom --> Sharp MD diskman [to record onto]...
not exactly Abbey Road Studios.. lol and of course this limits you to cutting the track in a single pass...
The guitar used was 'Wrath' [RG470LBK] fitted with PAF PRO's and also my trusty Dunlop Crybaby [don't leave home without one..]
There is however one key thing that many folks overlook where tone is concerned... so here comes another gem from the shred R'n'D labs of Klarkenstein:
"70% of tone resides in the fingers.. fx and eq mearly tweak and refine the tone that is already within you..."
"so buying a rig like Satches, with the same guitars as Satch set up exactly the same way as Satch with the same strings and everything, all the fx and eq controls set the same as Satch, with the same strap [guitar and jock], wearing the same clothes and had exactly the same thing for breakfast and a freshly shaved head will mean...................
you'll sound exactly like you through the same kit that Satch uses..."
utterly pointless........................

very true clarky. even with the same EQ on exactly the same rig as mine, anyone else who plays through it gets completely different tone. I never really knew how true that was until I experimented.
I've just bought myself a new computer :) Be proud of me! You think 80Gb of dedicated hard drive recording is enough space (a seperate 80Gb drive for programs, drivers etc.)? I hope so...

Joe, I've been listening to your music for a very long time. My question is, will you ever make an all blues CD. I think that would be a great project for you and your band.
Thanks,
Tom George

Hi everyone!!!!!
I'm back! :)
It took me more time than I was expecting, but now I'm in front of the computer again! :) I'd love to read all of the pages, but fortunately I have a life and I don't have time for 4251075146046356341156635 pages of posts...
I really missed this place!
How were your vacations/holidays?
I never left my country this year. I did an Open Water Diver course in the beggining of the summer and then I've been scuba diving in the Azores. LOVED IT! If I become a marine biologist some day, which is my wish, that will become my life! :D And then I returned and I've been in Sintra, a beautiful village not far from Lisbon where I have my second home. And this was pretty much it!
How's everyone? Are there any interesting news? T2J CD? Anyone got married, had children, met Joe?
Oh, sorry, michelle, but here goes a delayed Happy Birthday! :p
C u all soon! :p

Steva, All you have to do is be a member of Joe's online fan club. YOu should already be eligible.
Sandra: Secret Prayer can be found on the Crystal Planet CD. Song #10. That whole CD is good.

Eric, So when I go to Ticketmaster this morning to purchase tickets for the Atlanta Concert all I need is my password for this site? Or does it work a different way?
I appreciate your help. I just want to make sure I get the best seats possible for the concert.

Steva: I believe that the ticketmaster thing is online. I am not sure about if you go to ticketmaster themselves. Go to www.ticketmaster.com and do a search for G3. It should come up with details about the dates and times for the presale. Good Luck

PhryDom: Absolutely ROTFLMAO D/\\/E!!....Can those harmonic minor modes get any faster, lol, with his MAC anything is possible ;-)......
Clarky: lol bro, I was worried there when I first read your post, but I see you grabbed the manual so the situation is well under control now, lol....Seems like a lot of work having to go through the AW and Cubase, but that "scene changes" feature sounds really kuul!!....Even though it may be a poor mans way, it still sounds professional to me in the end.... Requiem next....Another of my favorite tunes....I look forward to the day you record "Talking To Stone"....That tune just simply does something to me....Means so much, and the fact that I have it on video makes it that much more special....
Dude....That is your "Love Thing"...."Shredz" is a Masterpiece waiting to happen, lol, and "The shred R'n'D labs of Klarkenstein"....LMAO!!....
btw,....Be safe in Holland ;-)
tdgeorge: WHAT!?!?....You've been listening to JOE for a long time and are wanting an all blues album?!?!....lol, have you ever seen his self titled cd (Joe Satriani)?
That is his blues showcase....Not your regular blues either....Some deep refined and well matured blues by JOE is on that one....
Welcome back Miguel!!
And yeah....I hear ya....Secret Prayer has got a great solo!!....Beautiful song....
