Here comes school (tomorrow)...again.

zonin - You're not the only Jimi freak here. I didn't say anything about the Hendrix gig because I won't be able to make it. I'm sure it'll be an awesome concert, though. I'd go see it in a heartbeat if it was down here in LA.

mikesb - Thanks again for the interview. The Z.Z. stuff was interesting.
JS JP 41 - You live a little east of St. Louis? What city? Most of my relatives live in that area.

The instructions for links are listed at the bottom of the "post message" page. Replace http://someurl with the address and TEXT with what you want the link to say.

The Prez - Yeah, MegaBoyd had the Skyliner.

LISF is the only DVD I'm on. I'm on a few CDs though:

- 10/18/97, Aerosmith's A Little South Of Sanity (this album was Pro Tooled to death, but I've compared it to bootlegs and some tracks from my show made the album)
- 10/19/99, most of Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes' Live At The Greek (all but two songs from this album were recorded at my show)
- 12/29/00, Joe Satriani's Live In San Francisco
- 07/30/03, the Dave Matthews Band's 2003 tour sampler (this is a bonus disc that was given away with preorders for their most-recent live album, one of the tracks is from my show)

I was at the 01/16/04 Dave Matthews & Friends gig, which VH1 filmed for a possible television special.

I think I'm forgetting one or two things here, but this is most of them. I missed being on a Yes CD / DVD by one day, and I missed being on the upcoming G3 DVD by two days.

There are a few people here who were at the shows filmed and recorded for the first G3 releases.

To answer your music book question, I break songs down into a few bars at a time. I play each part over and over until I memorize it, and then I move on to the next part. That way, I never have to turn pages while I'm playing.

I do this because I can't sight read as fast as most music is played...haha....but it should work for you maybe.

...Austin...

Man... all this talk about amps is killin me...

As much as I hate to break it to y'all...

Tone Is In The Fingers... I don't know how many times Joe has said it, but I learned that within the 1st 5 years of playing... and all I ever had was a RockTek Mini amp to spare... the only tone I ever needed was the adjustments on the guitar and very little adjustment on the amp. I was so broke as a teen that when I was learning how to play, the amp's reverb would actually make it squeal & feedback with avengence until I figured out a way to wrap it with a bath towel to stop the feedback... that little amp rocked for all I could afford... it was cheap, a pain in the ass to fix all the time, but I still have that amp for sentimental reasons... simply because it was a reminder on how things used to be... it also let me realize that I could be a far better player if I just worked on accuracy and not masking the tone with crazy effects like my buddies did...

The only way I see controlling tone, volume, and distortion are the controls on the guitar itself. leave the pedals and gadgets alone... I mean yeah ok, I have a Line 6 Spider 212 which is loaded with effects but half the time I have it on the Twang, Blues, & Crunch settings and the rest is controlled on the guitar, the reverb is usually set to 25%, Delay is barely noticable, and Distortion is all controlled on my guitar...

Everyone's different I realize, but as fun as effects are... don't let it control or mask the true tone out of your playing ability! Don't let it rule your lives either...

Just a bit of advice. take it to heart or take it with a grain of salt...

Did anyone watch The Simpsons tonight? I thought this was the best episode in YEARS. On my weird scale of about 4-10, I give it a 9.

JS JP 41 - Ah, okay. Most of my relatives live closer to St. Louis, MO...in and around Granite City, IL.

I forgot who posted that Machine Gun coversong, but anyway, are you using a strat?? and what is your pedal n amp set-up. I really like the tone. I'd really say the tone has the ring of EVH, the texture of Satch, and of course the soul of Jim.........

I'm listening to 95.5 KLOS right now...they do an hour-long program every Sunday night playing music from local up-and-coming musicians.

They're playing a few songs from the Mike Sullivan Band now. Just a minute ago, the DJ said that Philip Bynoe is playing bass for the band. Cool stuff...not exactly Satch or Vai, but the MSB may be worth checking out.

Quantum - Welcome back!

Hello, I'm following music academy for guitar. I've to make a revieuw of a band/guitarplayer. First, I want to make something about Richie Blackmore (scuzzy, 20 years ago he made me going to play the guitar) but there was another student who treat this great player. So, the teacher proposed me to make something about Joe Satriani. Why not? Only 1 problem, I don't know very much about this guitar virtuoso. I'm not a big fan (I only have some CD's and I lik "Strange beautiful music" most)...

Maybe somebody here can tell me something interesting about Joe?? I mean inside information such as why He started the guitar, what is favorite song, solo is... Or some interesting pictures.

Thanks

PS. Who was the teacher of whom? Joe the teacher of Steve Vai or just the other way.

Hello. I gotta question for Joe. I was just reading some of Steve Vai's Journals and he recounts a time when he mooned Joe and his then-girlfriend...it was pretty hilarious to imagine. I'm wondering: Joe, do you remembers this?

Bil Welcome back dude, glad your heads on the right place ;-)

Dave Only bent notes ???!!!!! Right, dude progresion no.1, I'm playing it at the moment at 100 bpm and 1 bar per chord but I've got nothing 'different' sounding for the second progression.

Cube That comment from Bil was about your crappy whiskey, which makes your beer look good by comparison ! ;-) My bro has just bought a Line 6 Spider off e bay, I'm looking forward to having a play with it :-)

Plum Loco Agree with you on the tone thing, up to a point. I remember as a young un playing a rehearsal with a sound like a bee in a tin can. Along comes this dude who has been playing a while and rips off 'Black Star' and I wouldn't have known that it was my gear. Another great way to prove this is if you buy a good guitar when you are still learning - my Jem didn't sound like a Jem for a good few years - lol

later peeps ;-)

PHEW!
Hail, Hail Ethn, hehe

Thanks to the response i was just bored when posted that sky question and it actually turned out quite well :-)
Well I clearly got a view of Venus last night with my telescope. It took approximately 30 minutes to find it and then it become out of focus within 10 seconds :-( Also found Saturn and still eye wateringly pleasing.

Anyway, back to school and still waiting for a reply from Uni's.

Song of the weekend: Morrocan Sunset. Amazing

Hey, Another thing.
You want to know what is a fantastic movie? THE ROCK! The one with Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery. A work of mastery, i say. This is what a real action movie is like. Well this and the Die Hard Trilogy, of course. :-)

JS JP 41 I've been playing for a long long time... but with lots of long gaps in between too ;-)

young and old stuff... my sister's daughter was listening to Joe while she was still in the womb! I'm serious! She's also a guitar player now :-) In 2002 I took my Mum to see Joe (her second Joe gig)... it was her 72nd birthday :-)

mikesb love that explanation of ZZ's name! Any news on the full interview going online? Maybe Jon Luini has a new site up his sleeve for the new album and he's waiting on that...?

Simon Manzer long time no see! Interesting views on meditation! :-)

Barrie good points there, mate.

Paul except for the odd reference note (an open E or an open A, for example) yes!!! It's quite interesting! You better email me about the chord things... surely the masses don't wanna read about it lol

later folks.. Dave :-)

jelly man Hey, I'm sure I've talked churchy things on here before with you. Remind me, one of the guys you told me of was called Paul, and he's in mountaineering club. I haven't seen him at cu, but there are many different cu events so that's not really surprising. It's so true what you said. One analogy I've heard is that 3 engineers are asked to bridge a chasm. One spends his money he's given building a bridge across 1/4 of the chasm, one builds a bridge across 1/2 of the chasm and one builds one across 3/4 of the chasm. Although some bridges are longer than others, they're all useledd - we can't dig ourselves out of our hole.
