Skippygirl - Awesome...hope you had a good number day. Did you also remember to look for 7/8/09 10:11:12? :-)

michelle - "I could kiss you smack on the lips for that link!"

Woohoo! I got a kiss from someone last night, at least. ;-) (I'm not bummed or confused about the rest of my night, nooo...haha.)

Glad you enjoyed the clips.

cosmic_ape - I barely know who Eva Longoria is...it's a really nice feeling, actually. I know EVH lives in town, but I've never thought of running into him "here". That'd be pretty neat.

I've met a lot of my favorite famous people, but I've never had a run-in with one in an everyday situation...it'd be kinda cool, someday...

Hey, how was the Steve Vai class?

Cappy Steve - I buy a lot less merch now than I have in the past...some of the big numbers I mentioned are because I've seen bands several times (24 for Satch, 18 for DMB, etc.). I do find that I have more band shirts than I could ever possibly wear, though.

My plan is to find a friend that can sew and have her turn some of my older shirts into an awesome rock 'n' roll blanket...

Satriella - I hope Them Crooked Vultures works out well for JPJ...I'd love the chance to see him on tour. I didn't make an effort to see him on his 1999 solo tour...I still don't know why! :-/
WhammyFreak - There are a lot of people in hard rock/metal circles who consider Vai a much better guitarist than Satch.

I like Joe more, but when you look at their careers as a whole Vai's playing does have more variety. I don't consider him No. 1, but I understand how other people do.

Hawk Feather - Hi...welcome to the site! Have you ever seen Joe in concert? What other music are you into?
Listening to: Dream Theater - Images And Words (current song: Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle And The Sleeper)

US singer-songwriter Willy DeVille dies aged 55
PARIS — US singer songwriter Willy DeVille, who headed the 1970s New York punk group Mink DeVille before going solo and taking new directions, has died at the age of 55, his French tour organiser said Friday.

"Willy DeVille this night joined Edith Piaf, Jack Nitzsche and Johnny Thunders", said Caramba Spectacles, referring respectively to the French star who inspired him, to his producer, and to a fellow-70s punk guitarist.

His wife had announced in June that DeVille had pancreatic cancer.

DeVille in the late 70s played in New York's mythical CBGB club alongside the likes of Blondie or the Ramones with his first album Cabretta produced by Nitzsche, former arranger for Phil Spector.

His subsequent albums began to ooze romantic, with "Le Chat Bleu" recorded in part in Paris and inspired by his love of Piaf's music and of the French capital.

The next decade saw DeVille play soul, sometimes with a Latin touch, producing the European hit "Italian Shoes."

He moved to New Orleans in the 90s, where he also reappropriated the sounds of rhythm'n'blues, cajun and creole, and in 1992 produced a mariachi version of Jimi Hendrix reprise "Hey Joe", which became an international hit.

His last albums "Crow Jane Alley" and "Pistola", soul and blues with a Latin rhythm, symbolised his role in helping to define a new musical style sometimes known as Spanish-American. VIDEO

Scuba - Okay granted, so they are both on the Jedi council...but don't you consider Joe to be just a bit more "Yoda-ish" than Steve?

I mean come on....who are we kidding, after all, Joe has been at this for a whole year longer than Steve, and Steve will NEVER catch up!

And yes, Steve's music have a lot more variety, but I just don't get the same feeling from him as I do from Joe.

We Jedi instrumentalists do have a long and hard road to walk in life...

Do The Stu: Sorry it takes me so long to reply to a post. I'm around, have just had a lot on my plate lately. I would definitely be up for meeting some new folks while I am in Tahoe. I'm actually driving down by myself on Friday, spending the night in Winnemucca and continuing the trip Saturday morning.
I couldn't afford the rates for a room at Harvey's, so I am planning to stay across the state line at a place I can afford. I'll definitely be around Harvey's all day Saturday, though.

Austin-I have always been amused that people consider Vai to be a better guitarist.Joe is MUCH more accurate, and is a great improviser.I think all of the showmanship just blinds people.

But Vai is amazing when he is on.

comparing Vai and Joe is surely impossible but opinions will never end....so heres mine....Steve is ahead of his time and has a composers mind. He not the student of Joe anymore. He sounds like hes influenced by no one ...or no one weve heard of..lol. Hes carved his own path with his deep developed ideas using the guitar. Joe, on the other hand is more about his influences of blues and melodies and can capture the non- connoisseur of progressive music....today!. .....well that my opinion.

Thanks for the Vai link Alan...that was sick...i did get to see that tour and got to meet the whole band through Steve's site......except Dave.

axeshredderjc....

I couldn't agree more with your analogies.... except for Vai's influences. My opinion, I still hear and most likely will always hear some sort of reference to Zappa. Frank tapped into Vai at such an early age that Steve took on some of Franks musical style in writing and arranging. It's like Joe showed Steve the tools and Frank helped Steve learn more about using those tools. Either way you look at it. When you have Joe and Frank as influences and their very much a part of your personal life. You can't go wrong. You just can't..... God Bless all of Them. The music they've created will never be lost or forgotten.

Off to Chickenfoot in Chicago......

C Ya !!!

That Bucharest video is awesome...it's so nice to see Mike Keneally again (even if it is from back then)!

I saw MK at the Baked Potato here in LA with some other T2Jers (MegaBoyd, anuj) about five years ago now...what a great show that was. I remember during intermission, Mike went out to his car to grab a bag of pretzels to share with everyone...haha.

WhammyFreak - I don't get the same feeling (I don't hear quite as much feeling) from Steve's music as I do with Joe's either. I listen to them differently, though.

The thing I like most about Steve is he doesn't seem to compromise. Every single note he plays is exactly what he wants to play. His albums are all so different but they come out to be just what he wants. I don't necessarily like all of it musicially, but I like it all artistically. It's kind of hard to explain, but I think you get where I'm coming from...

turbo236 - Haha, no need to apologize...at least you are coming back to read posts, even if it takes a while.

We're all arriving at different points throughout the weekend...if nothing else, we can at least find you in line and say a quick hello. And don't worry, you aren't the only one who can't afford Harvey's...I'm staying on the California side too. ;-)

Keniko - Very cool Freebird video...what's with that empty table right up front though? Haha...

Enjoy the show tonight! We expect a full report...

Ethn Hayabusa - Yeah, I don't get it...it really is hard to figure out.

I see you post on MP's forum every now and then...that's one place where I notice people favor Vai over Satch. I find that odd, because with all the G3 tours John Petrucci has done recently I think he's starting to play more like Satch and less like Vai...

axeshredderjc - I agree with your description of Steve perfectly...you put it much better than I tried to earlier in this post...
Well, I'm outta here...time to go to some grocery shopping. Argh...I didn't drink too much last night, but I have a bit of a hangover. Al, how can you do this all the time? ;-)

Hey Joe, IF YOU CAN READ THIS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

My name is Kim and I have a Zeppelin Tribute Band. My Husband, the guitar player in our band told our bass player, Felix Haneman (from Zebra) that we were warming up for you at BB Kings.

Now I am in a bit of a situation! Are you playing a smaller size venue solo any time sooner or later in NY? One that you may need a warm up act for?

I know this is kind of presumptious, but I am in kind of a situation, and if you could help us out in any way, or you have any ideas, I would love to hear! We are all very professional and have been playing together for 20 years!

HELP! Thanks, Kimmykup kpliny@gmail.com http://thesteelhorseband.com

Keniko- lol...i was going to say Steve is influenced by Zappa.....and not knowing alot of Zappa stuff...the stuff i do know didnt spark any similarity to what steve has been doing..though lately he does resemble the Composer side. I would like steve to go back to the DLRB style again but i guess that would be boring to steve today. Have an awesome night w/ Chickenfoot(or hope you had!).

Thanks DTS Austin! Being from Long Island, i spent many years analyzing Steve ...he changed much when he went solo from DLRB ..i felt "Flat Leaved"...then Joe made my day, week , month, year, decade, life! =)

Al, Angel Food is on the new DVD...

The clinic with Steve was so insanely awesome. The fact that a guy like him let us pick his brain and gave us these no B.S. incredibly insightful answers is somewhat of a life changing event, musically speaking...

I haven't felt this way since the first time I heard the first G3... Steve is such an accomplished person. People overlook him and focus too much on his technique and artistic persona. His advice could very well a whole seminar on self-improvement for any person and/or field. He was also funny as hell...

The new DVD? What can I say? The guy is a genius! To harmonize a scat singing part and to make it a fully blown up funk fest is something not many people have the vision (or the chops) to pursue. And the violins! Damn!!! Just when you think his music couldn't get any better, he comes up with this shit! Those arrangements alone are worth the value of the DVD...

And now that I've seen it, I have to wait 6 more weeks to buy it!!!! Aaaaarrrgggggghhhh!!! At least I got the Naked Tracks collection, so I can start learning some of his tunes. I feel more confident I won't totally suck this time around...

Now, if only we could get this Joe Satriani guy to come do a clinic...

OK. What's all this Vai/Satch comparison crap!!! DON"T MAKE ME GET THE JIGSAW OUT,PEOPLE!!! Sure, everyone has their opinion and they're entitled to it,but in my opinion, when you are talking about musicians who are on the level that Joe ,Steve,Yngwie,Eddie or any other well known guitarist are, don't say one is better than the other. They all have their own unique style that they as individuals are best at.Carlos Santana once famously said"Your tone is your face",so when you here something by Satch, you KNOW it's him by his tone.Same goes for every other guitar player you could name. And while Joe is probably my biggest influence as far as style goes,if you were to hear me play, you'd know it wasn't Joe.I have my OWN unique sound and no one else plays like me.That would apply to all you others out there who play guitar. Just remember, guitar playing is NOT a competition. It's YOUR musical voice to express YOUR emotions. It shows who YOU are. It's YOUR face.Keep it real people!!! Ok,now I'm off to find some timber!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

comparing Steve and Joe's abilities and careers is not Joe vs Steve / who is better...we all agree you cant say any top guitar player is better than the next...its a discussion on how their careers/styles have gone in different directions..and most of us are fans of both so no ones pitting one on another...and as far as ive seen..this site is talk to Joe ..right?...well he can tell us to shut up too..lol

Now to say who is more popular?...Joe is definately closing that gap!...Steve owns the world of guitar players as so his axe.
