Someone thought Dream Theater is British?

Their based somewhere in New York! The Lead singer in Canadian, he comes from a place called Penetang Ontario! about 40km to 50km east of where I live in Orillia, Ontario!

The Darkness... are very obviously a 70s 80s rock n roll style band... Jet reminds me of several bands from even the 80s punk scene...

Pardonez Moi... I must Poop now...

Dear Mr Satriani,

My name is Michael. I live in Jakarta, Indonesia. I'm 23 yrs old now, and I've been paying attention to your music since I was in junior high. I don't think that you've been to my country, have you? Why? You got many fans here, though. When I watched the video of G3 (1996), I got something bothered in your playing, which was in "Cool no9" and "Summer Song". I'm sorry to ask you, but did you make little mistakes there? I think it was about sound technics or something like that. And, in Jimi Hendrix's "Red House", why did you play a little bit less dinamyc than Steve Vai did? Again, I'm sorry if I ask you those questions, but I'm really curious. I really love every single song of yours, and I must tell you that I like you best than other guitarists. Do you still teach? Would you come here to a workshop like Paul Gilbert and Frank Gambale did? How could you learn by yourself playing guitar? You're very smart. Well, that's all for now. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you so very much!

Woohoo...I went 4-for-4 in this round.

mikesb - LOL...a metal "Come On Eileen" would be cool.

Friends sucks. ;-)

Jimmy Kane - Do you have any more specific examples of ITLIS? stuff that you don't like...?
Museman - I'm sure that info will be posted soon....
Flagg - I LOVE Save Ferris' version of Come On Eileen. They were a very cool band.
SupaaDave - I haven't seen Indigenous live, but I know you're going to be blown away. :-)
ravenkenshi - Joe doesn't really sign stuff through the mail, but if you hang out by his bus after a show you'll probably be able to get an autograph or two.

Do the Stu

For example, i think 'If I could fly' is too long! The end is boring (the 2 last minutes). The whammy riff on Searching is just amazing!! But one more time this song is too long...

But you know what? The more I listen 'ITLS?' the more I like it... So I was wrong, I like this album... But the first time I listened it i was quite disappointed.
The song i like on ITLS? : GNAAHH / Lifestyle / Is There Love In Space? / The Souls Of Distortion / I Like The Rain / Bamboo /

My top Satch album:
1/ Crystal Planet
2/ Joe Satriani
3/ Strange Beautiful Music
4/ The Extremist
5/ Flying In A Blue Dream

Here's the top of the Best Riffs since 1900 :-) (source : Total Guitar)

1. Guns N' Roses ‘Sweet Child O' Mine'
2. Nirvana ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit'
3. Led Zeppelin ‘Whole Lotta Love'
4. Deep Purple ‘Smoke On The Water'
5. Metallica ‘Enter Sandman'
6. Derek & The Dominoes/Eric Clapton ‘Layla'
7. Metallica ‘Master Of Puppets'
8. AC/DC ‘Back In Black'
9. Jimi Hendrix ‘Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)'
10. Black Sabbath ‘Paranoid'
11. Ozzy Osbourne 'Crazy Train'
12. Free ‘All Right Now'
13. Muse ‘Plug In Baby'
14. Led Zeppelin ‘Black Dog'

What do you think about it? I think it's correct!

A few of the so called "best riffs" just get on my nerves.. take smells like teen spirit - over played and the reason i can't stand nirvana. I don't even find it that good. Sorry for any body im offending here.. just can't get my head round the nirvana fuss. Muse as another example... great british band - dont get me wrong, i think they are really good. But plug in baby - does anyone agree it's a rip of tocatta + fugue in D minor?? Though *sigh* besides all that i can see why they have earned a best riff title.. though in my books Here are my faves... I'll only use a few satch and vai to give others a chance...

1)the riffs from Surfing with the alien / satch boogie - Satch 2)the attitude song/bad horsie - vai 3)cowboys from hell - pantera 4)fixation on the darkness - killswitch engage 5)pre-chorus riff in 'this years most open heartbreak" - funeral for a friend. (can i ask the question to anyone who's not from UK, has anyone heard of funeral for a friend?) 6)Here I go again - whitesnake 7)Suspicious minds - Elvis presely (classic !!) 8)The trooper - Iron maiden 9)since you've been gone - rainbow 10all right now - free 11)more than a feeling - boston

to name a few of the classics + modern riffs i really appreciate

Jimmy Kane - If I Could Fly is too long? Ouch... ;-) That's my favorite song on the album! Well, I hope the album continues to grow on you with each listen.

I agree with the riffs on that list, but I think they're in the wrong order. I'd go with something more like this:

01. Deep Purple ‘Smoke On The Water'
02. Led Zeppelin ‘Whole Lotta Love'
03. Guns N' Roses ‘Sweet Child O' Mine'
04. Jimi Hendrix ‘Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)'
05. AC/DC ‘Back In Black'
06. Ozzy Osbourne 'Crazy Train'
07. Led Zeppelin ‘Black Dog'
08. Metallica ‘Enter Sandman'
09. Derek & The Dominoes/Eric Clapton ‘Layla'
10. Nirvana ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit'
11. Black Sabbath ‘Paranoid'
12. Metallica ‘Master Of Puppets'
13. Free ‘All Right Now'
... Muse ‘Plug In Baby'

Smoke On The Water should always be #1.

Smells Like Teen Spirit has always been overrated.

The only song I don't recognize is the song by Muse. I've never heard it. I looked it up on CD Universe and it's only a few years old (?). I don't think it should be on the list at all.

stace - yup.. things are really picking up... I'm not going to work until Monday but I feel well enough to now... so just passing time writing novels in t2j instead off working from home.. lol..
a re-virgin??? and do they also extract all memories and knowledge from your brain so you can really act like you've never done it before?... lol.. fumbling in the dark.. lmao..

you have the CD... awesome.... I'm pleased it finally got there.. ha.. I'm really glad you and the girlies liked my squeakin' and a sqwarkin'.. lol.. very cool indeed...

speaking in tounges is where I tried to imagine what it would sound like if Satch played over that Vai track.. well at least for a little while before I go off on one.. lol

962 - haha.. when you see everything listed like that it is kind of daunting.. so why do we all do?.... 'cos we love it.. lol..

so much pain and so much gain.. lol..

trutina - yeah dude.. I'm a real fan of country/roots when I'm fucking it up in the mosh pit.. lmao..

I hope my lil' journey through my kit evolution helped.. there is just so much kit around that it's like navigating a minefield trying to figure out what's best for yourself... remember thuogh.. no matter what anyone say, the best judge is your ears..

phryg - yup.. I need around 42 tracks minimum.. don't forget I don't only have a metal band but synths, a full orchestra, choir and church organs.. so I record loads of stuff on virtual tracks and still have a pile of track bouncing to do.. and so that I don't lose too much control I run some stuff back 'live' along side the recorded parts on the sequencer.. another AW16 would help out I guess.. lol
I checked out the Phil Rees site... simply awesome... I'm going to nose through there quite a bit I think... thanx for the link...
I think a PC upgrade may help things...
so what sort of gear are you selling and why??
sammy - haaa... biggun's.... lmao..

slansh - I've had no issues with the 2120 at all... it's been superb since the day I got it....

ha.. my amphead and 2120 are in the same rack.. and the 4x12 cabs have wheels... a small gig means only one 4x12 which will 'split' into a stereo 2x12... but it don't sound quite so nice as the two 4x12 cabs..

flagg - yeah.. lol I couldn't recall the name... vh4 = Women and Children [I thkn.. I can never remember]... shit.. the 4th VH album.. lmao.. jeez I'm going brain dead.. lmao..
mikey - ha you got me thinking now with the Gilmore thing..

Mikey and all you newbie - novice - intermediate players ----
here's a little challenge.. find 20 'non-shredders' that'll make your heart stop.. I'll count a band as one [so if there is more than one great guitarist in then that's ok]

the reason is :::

all novice players note this....

there are great players to learn huge amounts from which are NOT riddled with technically demanding passages but which ARE riddled with great licks, ideas, soul and can serve as a much more suitable starting point than Satch or Vai when learning to move your lil' newbie mits around the neck...
this therefore makes for learning superb and accessable slols... this can then serve as a nice and stable basis upon which you can continue to builld by raising the level of difficulty...

"mom.. I wanna play like Vai.. get me a Jem7, all his CD's and all his tab books"

one year later "mommy.. why do I still sound like shit?"

So... suggestion #1 I've already done....

1 - Pink Floyd - Dave Gilmore: check out Wish You Were Here for a whole cataloge of simple, tasteful, soulful and beautifully executed solos.. this album is a 'must have' for anyone serious about lead guitar..

Ariamic as a die-hard Muser (can you tell from the name?!) I must defend them, they are the most invetntive band out there right now. Matt has always taken classical influences and put them into his songs, he's simply taken it, changed it around a little and made it into an ascending shape, and made a completely new rock song out of it. What sucks is when bands just plainly rip off each others songs so they sound the same, Plug-in baby doesn't sound like any other song. 'Blackout' on Absolution is also based on a classical piece, but again it is turned into something new.

Also there is pretty much no artist out there that hasn't used other people's stuff, Joe himself says that Hendrix stuff 'just pops out' all the time. It's cool to be influenced by something of a different style or genre (or era), I just hate all these nu-metal wannabes who's songs all sound the same and that sort of thing. They ought to be made to run a marathon on a bed of nails. Or something similar :-)

Satch definately taught kirk, although he wasn't his first teacher, i read somewhere he had 10 lessons before kill 'em all. He was already an established thrash guitarist by then, playing for exodus, then metallica stole him :D. So i imagine his technique would have already been established too. The solos in ride the lightning/ puppets are quite satchish. Now he's gone back to pentatonic stuff instead of using modes and stuff. HE can still pull it all off though, i was against the barrier for a metallica gig, he can still play bloody fast.

I agree and I definitely think that the riff on Plug'in Baby (Muse) is one of the best riff ever made. It's cool to meet some Muse fans over here! I'm probably one of the greatest fan!! I love Absolution (on sale in the US since march, and you could hear the single 'Time is running out' on the US radio), especially Apocalypse Please, Sing for Absolution, Stockholm Syndrome, Hysteria, Butterflies & Hurricanes and Ruled by Secrecy. And you, what's your fav?
