962 - Yeah, I agree. I've had nothing but good reoprts from my students and their parents, so I'm pretty chuffed!! I also helped one guy achieve an A* grade in performance for his Music GCSE, as well as an A in the composition unit. He bought me a case of beer for that!!!!! Little suck up... lmao

Phryg Dom - Hmm, personally I don't let them 'run riot' like that until they've grasped the basics. I'm a firm believer of learning the rules before trying to break them; that way, you can figure out how to break them, and which ones to break. But you're right - it's all about the sound. Something I forgot to mention in my post yesterday is that I have this one particular student who has learning difficulties (I think he's autistic), and as such simply cannot remember the names of scales. So he names them according to the colours they make him 'see'. I'm not sure of all of them, but I know that Lydian is yellow and Dorian is blue. It's pretty odd, but it works for him, and that's what counts.

mowlie - Grrrr! Go on then, but I've really got to start copyrighting my exercises... lol

Clarky - Head, hands, heart - the three Hs; I like that... lol

estrela....hope you feel better soon!

Clarky...just don't try it with Vodka & a Stogie in the tub...might be incindiary...lmao

Anybody got a backing track to Borg Sex?

aussieRGman...nice tune!

mikesb...you're right...like I could show Greg something...one very nice thing Greg said to me was..."anyone can be a great technical player, but you've got ideas..." I was so humbled & excited...really gave me a shot of adrenaline... wow!

Keniko...yes..the GT8 touch sensitive system sounds like a very useful tool...you could go from a soft acoustic rhythm to a hard edgy lead by just by changing your picking attack!

Mowlie: Yeah, usually I go through the E and A derived barre chords first, because those are the most common, and because power chords derived from the E and A barre chords are the most common too. I usually don't move students on to C or D derived barre chords until we've gone through just about every possible chord that is recognised as a standard "chord formula." Anything you'd see in the craziest jazz stuff. I would have to say though, that D root chords are limited use because they will never have the big bass sound of an A or E root barre chords, and G root are less usefull, because moany of the fingerings are very awkward. I think other than E and A, C root barre chords have the most use because they are full sounding, but rearange the intervalic order of the chords from (ex: major chord A root) 1,5,1,3,5 to 1,3,5,1,3 giving a different, yet similar vibe.

962: I hear you man haah! I just picked up 2 new students that have been playing for one year with another teacher. I go to the lesson, and the mom shows me the books they've been working out of. From the books, it looks like the kids have down all of the basic open chords, barre chords, power chords, and are getting into picking. Very quickly though, I realise that these kids barely know anything, and this dumbass of ateacher has had them back and forth all over the place with little structure to gradually build the student. On top of this the younger student's lessons were written out on severl strips of construction paper!! What the hell! So, I'm going to have to spend the next month building these kids bakc up from scratch and try to figure out what they DO know. Sheesh.... That's the problem, many teachers can't figure out how to balance letting the kids have some freedom to learn some songs they want, while still learning things in the correct order and not having the lessons go all over the place. I'm beginning to think many teachers don't have a 2-5 year plan in their head for teaching their students. It's sad really.

Dear Sir

I am a very honoured in order to write to you this letter. I have been visiting your web site many times before I decided to write to you after a kind of hesitation.....well I am 27 years old, I am a postdoctorant researcher and a teacher of English at Oran University, actually I am working with Burlington Ressources in my home country, Algeria.

Besides this, I am fan of Master Joe Satriani 's music and style, and other artists such as Michael Angelo and Steve Vai.

From my early childhood I wanted to be a professional in playing guitar, but could not reach this aim because in my country there's no rock schools. This year I've bought a red Fender Strato Caster guitar and wanted to start playing some sounds, but it's too difficult without a teacher.........I am a very early beginner. In short, I was wondering if you can help me to find a very professional school in the US or UK in order to study and be able to play guitar. I'll be very glad if you accept me as a student. For me music is an inseparable part of my life....it's everything, thus I won't be only a listener but a professional player.........that's my objective. Could you help me to make it true?

Thank you endlessly.

With my best regards.

Ken, headache - day 7....ugh!

Anywho, I saw this woman on t.v. this morning and she was a numbers lady. I'm not much into the whole numbers thing, but I thought what the hell, let's go check it out. I went to her site and found it pretty interesting. It tells you how to figure out your Lifepath number, and your Attitude number. My Lifepath is a 7, and my Attitude is a 5. After a bit of thought, it was pretty accurate. My husband's was spot on having 4 as both numbers. I think this makes us non-compatible. lol! There are more numbers to your lifepath, not just these 2, so the reading isn't complete.

So, I was sitting here listening to Crystal Planet, and I got curious to what numbers JOE would have. His Lifepath number is 7 (same as mine), and his Attitude number is a 4 (same as my husbands). lol! Now I understand why I like Joe so much. lmao!! IT'S IN THE NUMBERS! lol!

If you're bored and curious like I was, go to:

http://www.numberslady.com/num.cfm

See if your numbers match your personality. Share them with the rest of the class if you want - just for shits and giggles.

Mari - You humble me greatly. Thanks for those words - they are really not deserved. I'm just struggling on, learning, making mistakes, fixing things as I go. I haven't forgotten about your copyright stuff. I'll look it up again.

Been busy trying to figure out if Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Leaves) composed by Joseph Kosma (circa 1946) is under copyright and who the publisher is. What a nightmare. I think it may be under the French publisher Sacem. Any lovely French people out there that can check into that for me?? I only found the site in French. I do speak a little bit of French but not enought to get through the website.

Good news is that Bolivar Blues is under BMI publishing. I'll have to pay the royalties for a mechanical license, but thats only fair.

I'll put this info on Roy's site. It would help if all those that previously signed the SBM guestbook would sign Slansh's book too. I am hompful this album will be out in 4 or 5 weeks.

JOE - I loved the webcast!! Its just amazing to hear these older tunes that you don't normally play live. Just a thrill. I hope you really enjoy India. There is so much history and culture there. Hopefully you can get out and about too and see the sites. Very proud country.

All the best.

Ronnie

That numbers lady is spot on.

My Lifepath number was: 1

"ONES are independent, self motivated, and hard workers. They have a strong desire to be #1. They are critical of themselves and as a result, can be critical of others. When the 1 Life Path has won a personal victory, their face radiates with pure joy. Multitasking is something they tend to be very good at, and keeping busy is important to them. The 1s will not tolerate laziness from the people they spend their time with."

and my attitude number was: 3

The 3 Attitude tends to be the joker. They have a sense of humor and are charismatic. The Peter Pan Syndrome, they don't necessarily grow up. But when they're in a good mood, It's a big smile, bright eyes, and great conversation. If they're in a bad mood, you don't get to be happy around them. They have that effect on people.

lol

Sammy Hagar Time

Sammy Hagar plans to open one of his Cabo Wabo Cantinas in St. Louis, and he made his announcement Saturday during a show in St. Louis. Said Hagar, "I love St. Louis! I was given the name Red Rocker in St. Louis. I love the people here. I can't wait till we're open." The new cantina will open in spring 2007. Hagar already has Cabo Wabo Cantinas in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and South Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Hi I'm a very enthusiastic guitar player from Cymru(Wales). Dear Joe I've wanted to know..... What is the age limits onyour concerts, are 14 year olds allowed? Also have you or will you ever do a gig in Wales, because it would be a dream come true. The only rock God I've seen live in concert was Eric Clapton at the Millenium stadium and I'd like to see another Rock God. Dude You are one of the greatest guitar players alive, stay cool. SDJ.
