Getting more G3 footage, especially Yngwie Malmsteen's set, is a dream come true. It is the manifestation of my thoughts and wishes immediately after the show--i.e., "I hope they release a new G3 album from this tour, because Malmsteen's set was amazing."

Listening to Satriani is like getting sucked through a portal in vacuous outer-space and being plunked down on a strange and beautiful world of the future that although foreign is somehow familiar and there is absolutely nothing to fear.

I was checking out Match.com today and ran across the following ad...I thought it was hilarious...

I'm a warm, loving, compassionate woman looking for a loving, caring and RESPONSIBLE gentleman. Love, compassion, the arts and creativity are in my blood. I used to be a dreamer and an idealist, but as I grew older my outlook on life started changing and now I'm more realistic, a little sadder and somewhat wiser. I love beauty, talent, discipline and hard work. I'm a creature of emotions, impulse, intuition, instincts, imagination and empathy rather than reason or logic; a lot of the things that I do and say come from the heart, not because of any ulterior motives. I pride myself in my honesty and expect the same from the people I interact with. I read a lot and Tennessee Williams and Dostoevsky are my favorite authors. Sometimes I write as well, and at age 26 published my first novella, titled "Memoirs of Little Brother, An Elegy." I have traveled widely and have lived for four years in Europe (London, England) and two years in America (Rockford, Illinois, and Washington D.C.) My latest passion is computers, especially graphics, web-design, and animation. These days I am running my multimedia institute and software house with the help of my honest and hard-working business partner. No frivolous guys need contact me to squander my time- I am keen to raise a family soon. I do not plan on working after marriage; I will be quite content as a wife and a stay-at-home mom. My interests are computers, shopping, fine clothes, the arts, movies, classic fiction, dinning out and traveling. I prefer colder weather to hot weather and am in my element in a pulsating city rather the country; the American east coast is a salubrious place to settle in. I will only respond to ads that include photos. On a serious note, I am one of those rare human beings who does not believe in foreplay or sex before marriage.....so plz do not expect intimacy from me BEFORE marriage! I'm looking for a serious, responsible gentleman between the ages of 32-37 (height: 5'11"-6'4") who will be dedicated to his profession and family. He has to be white-collar with an undergrad or masters degree. I hope he is handsome, but not a flirt or a playboy. I have a propensity for tall, slim, athletic, blue-eyed, blondish men with thick crop of hair on their head, NOT on their bodies (no bald pates either, please). He should be someone who takes good care of his body and appearance, and likes to dress up fashionably and tastefully like Prince William. I really appreciate men who have beautiful manners and can dress up impeccably in dark suits and polished shoes. (If you do not or cannot dress up elegantly in dark suits, then plz do not bother to message me). A clean-shaven, well-dressed gentleman in a dark blue suit, designer shirt and tie, with expensive after-shave cologne on, who exudes class, charisma and confidence, is definitely a turn-on. A soft-spoken, groomed, sophisticated, courageous, honest, successful and humble gentleman is what I seek and pray for. (Humility seems to be rare in successful men indeed!). I hope he understands his duties, responsibilities, obligations and proves himself to be a good PROVIDER and PROTECTOR. I want EQUAL partnership in my relationship-neither the man nor the woman will have the upper hand. I am an understanding, mature, compromising human being, and I expect the same from my future life partner. I am a blend of the traditional and the modern: I admire old-fashioned values like respect for one's elders, family, red roses on a date, but-at the same time-I am liberal where the emancipation of women is concerned. According to me, the best road to success and happiness in life is the "middle road." P.S. In case you receive a wink from me, it means I am definitely interested in you, so plz respond accordingly..

I wish her the very best of luck. She's going to need it. Just as soon as she comes back to Earth...

Ovation1, thanks for your wisdom dude! I hadn't made the connection, but I think you're right - the failed sale of the Jem annoyed me. By the way, i've changed my mind AGAIN! haha, i'm awful, I know, but I discovered the new Ibanez SA1260 is on sale here in the UK. It's a decent guitar too, much like an Andy Timmons model, without the DiMarzio pickups. When I sell the Jem, the SA1260 is what i'll go for, cause it'll offer loads of tonal options if I load it with DiMarzios, and is much cheaper! The strat I tried was cool, but I still would have ended up changing the pickups!
Delfino, they just hung up? what self-absorbed, arrogant wankers. They're gonna be kickin themselves when they read interviews with you in Total Guitar, and read articles on what an amazing young talent you are! haha, those are the sort of things that just deserve to happen....fingers crossed for you bro!
michelle, oh you just had to go and tell me you saw G3 with EJ, didn't you?! haha, respect! I bet it was incredibly cool! It's cool to know there's a few people who've been here for ages....there's that real sense of the wise and knowledgeable being here but they don't make themselves really obvious!
telepatum, nice description of what it's like to listen to Satriani! cool stuff dude
marimariSRV, have a great time at Robben's gig tonight, i'm sure it'll be great!

Joe, when your playing a song with a lydian sound, do you find yourself using the lydian mode, or do you move around the neck in the same key signature? -Derek

Was the question about ITLIS to me? I think you were asking about favorite tracks from the album...

I'd say my top 3 favorite tunes are "Is There Love In Space?", "Gnaahh", (LOVE that chromatic solo) and "Bamboo"! I think the sequence of songs is perfect on that album, judging by the emotions that they radiate.

Ooh, I think I generated some confusion. I started out with Surfing and ITLIS, but my collection of Satriani albums is a little bigger now... here it is in chronological order:

1) Surfing With The Alien 2) Dreaming #11 3) The Extremist 4) Crystal Planet 5) Engines of Creation 6) Joe Satriani: Live in SF (CD) 7) Strange Beautiful Music 8) G3 Live w/ Vai and Malmsteen (CD) 9) Is There Love In Space?

and DVDs...

G3 from 1996 w/ Vai and Johnson G3 from 2001 w/ Vai and Malmsteen The Satch Tapes

... does anyone else agree that the Big Bad Moon video is humorous? Such an awesome song, though, but I can't take the video seriously.

Steve! That's awfully kind of you. I'll get in touch with you as soon as I get home... writing in from NY right now, at grandparent's house.

I asked about the pitch-axis theory because I'm trying to learn the outtro solo from ITLIS? ... I can play most of it, but I sure wish I knew what I was doing! From what I can discern it shifts from an F major 7th scale to an E-flat minor scale... but I'm probably wrong. On some parts he plays too fast for me to actually figure out what he's doing. The parts I can play are worth it though... as I've been in love with that outro solo ever since I first heard it. =)

I can't remember if there's anything else I'm supposed to address, so I'll stop now.

Adam

Holy Freakin Cow Joe... You are absolutely insanely crazy on that axe man... 5th time seeing you live last night, and I swear you only get better and better... YOU BLEW MY MIND ONCE AGAIN!!!

My drummer in my band has a friend that's an avid musician and happened to be a big Deep Purple fan but most importantly a Ritchie Blackmore fan... and this guy gave my drummer a message to give to me last night in Toronto, he said that Steve Morse was gonna smoke your butt on the guitar... Taunting me and all... I naturally laughed that right out of proportion, and so the show began, Thin Lizzy came and went, and then you were up soon after... my Drummer's mouth quite simply dropped and was totally flabbergasted to what you were doing... He's not a big fan of the Instrumental Rock scene or anything but I think he's got a new respect for you, that's for sure... he's heard your recordings through me and recognized what you were playing.last night... and naturally you hit everything to a perfect T... WAR ROCKED DUDE!!

Deep Purple was cool... Steve Morse was very good. I was very impressed with his style, He's not a major show boater or anything but you could tell he loved what he was doing... I have respect for any guitar player that takes pride in their playing...

Anyways, it was well worth the effort to get down there, and watch you play and all that great stuff... It's too bad we won't get to see "An Evening With Joe Satriani" up here in Toronto.. I hope you do one of those soon... either that or you should take a break for a year after this tour is done... you deserve it man... hell of a ride for numerous years...

My theory knowledge is pretty limited, but Ill try to give some pitch axis tips.

Pitch Axis is pretty simple if you play around with it, but it can sound awesome. Its all over the place from Prince to Pat Metheny.Try having a friend strum a 3 or 4 chord progression, but make sure they all share a root, like Amin Amin7b5 Amaj7 Amaj7#11.If you wanna solo over this you can TRY and play key center for some of it, but its probably gonna sound better to play a different scale for each chord, like A dorian or A Aeolian for the Amin, A Locrian for the m7b5, Ionian for the Maj7, and Lydian for the maj7#11.There are other options, of course, but try something like that. Its just that they revolve around a common note, "A" in this case.

Ive noticed that some people consider this a very disjointed type of chord progression, so you either love it or hate it.When done well, I much prefer this to conventional chord progressions. Not of this Earth, the end of With Jupiter in mind, Engines of Creation are all great Pitch axis examples.Have fun.

Not exactly pitch axis, but another cool thing is to have a 2 chord vamp, say Amaj7#11 and Bmaj7#11, and then try playing over that.I chose these chords because you would probably use Lydian for both, but it would alternate between B Lydian and A Lydian. It kinda helps you get used to soloing while changing keys, and could probably help train your ear for a particular sound, in this case Lydian.
