Joe, As the Mayor of Lodi, California, most people that know I am a life long Satch fan are shocked. I drive down the road, your music blasting, feeling like a kid. I still get goose bumps with songs like Satch Boogie & Borge Sex. I check your site on a regular basis to see if you will be touring somewhere close to Lodi, waiting with baited breathe for tickets to go on sale. After listening to you for over 20 years, I can't believe I still get so excited about seeing you again live! In the mist of the awesome responsiblity I have serving as Mayor and councilmember of my city, I say thank you Professor. You are my Calgon! JoAnne

Jo, Joan (Ibanezguitars) from Spain, Anyone,

Maybe Joan knows this one? Where can I get the music for "Andalusia" ? I know it is a town in Southern Spain where Flaminco (spelling?) may have started. Joe, "Andalusia" for me anyway, defines you as an artist, it is simply awesome!!!!!! Thanks Everyone! Kevin Scott Hughes

The southern region of Spain is called Andalucia. Cities like Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada are the main cities. The name comes from Al-Andalus, region inhabitated by muslims from 711 to 1492.
The roots of Flamenco are indeed in Andalucia. To its origin and evolution the contribution of gipsy etnia has been absolutely fundamental.
I'm not much into it, but I would recommend "Paco de Lucia" if you like guitar. If you would like to go deeper into it, you should search "Manolo Caracol" or "Camarón de la Isla". This last one is a modern myth of flamenco (though already passed away). People who sign flamenco are called "cantaor"

edit:

and a dancer is called "bailaor" or "bailaora"

There are modern fussion styles derived from flamenco like flamenco chill out, or flamenco-rock like this band called Medina Azahara, there in my early youth :-o

edit 2:
Though this last song was originally from a band called Triana. And yes, in 1979 I was alive, and kickin'

All good albums. I really like Signals, even though it's kind of a random album. They played Digital Man at the show, which was cool. Second on the setlist actually.

Is anyone else here seeing Joe in Atlanta October 26th, by any chance?

Guitarman77897 - Yes, Joe uses the same guitars at each of his shows. I'm sure there's a little variation from song to song every now and then, but generally they're the same. He doesn't get guitars from local stores in each city and play them for one night only or anything like that...

REVAN 2008 - "I guess U2 garner alot of different opinions.

one odd observation they seemed to start off very straight"

It's interesting to hear you mention that. One of the bonus tracks on the remastered Boy album is a different mix by Steve Lillywhite of their single I Will Follow. It's a good mix of a good song, but it's a bit heavy on the acoustic guitar. And if I were to make a list of all of the things that make U2 U2, I don't think any of them would be present in this particular mix...very straight and simple.

In the US, the U2 songs that get the most radio airplay are, by far, the first four songs on Joshua Tree. Rock stations lean toward Where The Streets Have No Name and Bullet The Blue Sky, and pop stations play I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and With Or Without You a bit more.

Both pop and rock stations have played new U2 singles for as long as I can remember, but they tend to be forgotten once the next one comes around. Beautiful Day and One have had some staying power though.

Rock stations do play a lot of older U2 fairly regularly. I hear Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Year's Day, and Bad a lot on KLOS here in LA.

Regarding Rush, I can't recommend just one album. Go for Moving Pictures if you're feeling proggy, Signals or Hold Your Fire if you want keyboard-heavy Rush, and Counterparts if you want more straight-ahead rock. Enjoy! And let us know what you think...

symphonyofnames - I have a cheap Washburn bass that I really love and play all the time, and then I have a very nice Fender Stu Hamm Urge II. What about you? What do you play?
cheese101 - That's an excellent version of Cryin'...thanks for posting it. Joe changes some of my favorite licks in the song (boo, haha), but the new stuff he does is very cool so its OK. I really like Jeff's fills during the last minute or so...
cosmic_ape - OK, cool...I hope you have a safe trip the rest of the way out here... And hopefully you can make it to a Joe show, or we're able to cross paths somewhere else...it's always nice to meet Satch fans.
JoAnna Rosanna - Hi...welcome to the site, and thanks for sharing your story. It's cool to hear that you've been a fan for such a long time. Do you have any plans for a Joe Satriani Day in Lodi? Or are you at least able to sneak some Satch music into the background during city council meetings? ;-)
Samsquanch - I think I've heard in interviews that the guys in Chickenfoot want to do a tour, so I'd imagine Joe won't be playing any of that stuff during his solo tour. We might get a few licks here and there mixed into the solos of other songs, but we won't know what we're hearing of course.
Listening to: Shinedown - Better Version

Revan- I'd recommend Moving Pictures; that has several of their biggest hits on it. 2112 is considered their first masterpiece, and a definitive album. There's also a "best of" kind of a thing; either Retrospective is great.

Stu- I've heard good things about Washburns. I have a white Steve Vai signature that I bought very barely used for $400. I saw the ad and jumped on the opportunity.

Michelle- That is one of the best things I've ever witnessed.

Do the Stu, thanks for asking. LTE I like 'Freedom of Speech'

I got Explosions in the Sky too after reading posts here, and I like it alot. I listen to music as I'm cooking and it's a good band to have on when I have friends around (and I'm preparing them food) who aren't necessarily into rock music.

What else have I been buying....well I got Damn Yankees (self titled first one) and Night Ranger, although I haven't listened to that much yet. And I also got Elgars 'The enigma variations'. Who here likes a bit of classical?

I also got 'Within Temptation' (The heart of everything) given to me by a guy who is a promoter and is responsible for bringing 'Thunder' over to Northern Ireland twice, the first time paying them £650 ha ha. He said within two years they were headlining along with Iron Maiden!!

Anyway, Within Temptation is a great band..would recommend them.

With Dream Theatre, I've been working my way backwards. Got to Train of Thought now. I think it's my favourite DT album...so far.

HEY AUSTIN!!!

WOW, surprised anyone remembered me, it has been so long since I have been able to post here.

I have been back and forth to Alaska a couple of times now, been here for 4 months on this tour, and look to be here maybe another year or so. I am doing contract work, and it gets rather cold up here at times. I do however have my axe ;-) I will fly out of here, if a major war starts however, (watch Damascus) and go home to family, I have that in my contract.

I flew home to Louisiana for a visit, and did a gig with my old band mates, I miss the hell out of that!!! We did a grand opening for a Bass Pro Shop, about 8,000 people came through that day, biggest crowd I have ever played for. They were dancing and having a good time of it.

Elton John played two sold out shows in Anchorage about a month ago and Kansas is performing at the Alaskan State Fair, late this month. Other than these events not many big named bands come this way. I did however see an all chick AC/DC tribute band, and they kicked ass, they were called “Hells Bells”. Check them out if you haven’t already.

I am hoping to entice Mr. Satriani to consider Anchorage on a leg of his next North American extravaganza, “SO HOWS ABOUT IT JOE”!!! Anchorage will love ya, lots of rockers there, and they love the blues too.

Hey Joe, did you have to adjust your playing any, after you got married and started playing with a wedding ring? Did it have an affect on your playing?

I was reading where Joe let Michelle work the whammy bar on his guitar, how cool is that?!?!!!, I thought she was married though ;-) Any pictures I wonder?

I shook both of Joe's hands at the same time once, I call this the Blessing of the Hands, I've done it with Uncle Ted, and Rick Derringer, Buddy Guy, and a few others, hopefully some of Joe's ability rubbed off.

Later, when I can

Oh cheesey, that Cryin' vid had me gobsmacked again, just can't get enough of his heartfelt tunes. Clicked thru to the vid and explained it to the kids (Oh Mum not another Joe Satriani song!) and they were riveted. Mind you, the only comment after that was "Wow, is he 50??????".

Ibanezguitars, my sister- and brother-in-law play and sing "flamenco" (not what they call it, my term) and they do a whole show of Lorca's songs, which is awesome.

I've been wondering what Satch might do with Lorca's songs, after hearing "Asik Vesyel' and "Andalusia" on PSAMOR.

What do you think?

Hey all,

I've been a fan of Joe Satriani for years. Professionally I am a molecular biologist and the Vice President of Science and Technology for a biotech company. Yeah, just because I'm a science geek doesn't mean I can't rock. I'm also a novelist and just finished my second book, "Rise of the Fallen." This is the follow-up to my first in the series "The Angel of Death and the Demon." The main protagonist in my books is Liam Michaels, a modern day artist and photographer. But he's also Azrael, the immortal Angel of Death. He’s also a Voidmaster and can move through and control the multiple dimensions of the Multiverse. The premise is that terrorist groups are not lead by humans, but rather demons and fallen angels.

In the latest book I decided to introduce Liam's brother, the archangel Uriel. Uriel goes by the name of Joey Terelli. Since Liam can be a bit serious, I wanted Joey to be a bit edgy. Common thought when writing a character is to find someone in the real world who resembles your character. In the case of Joey Terelli, I chose Joe Satriani. Like Joe, Joey is a world reknown virtuoso guitarist. Several of Joe’s songs are actually described in the novel including Flying in a Blue Dream, Midnight, Echo, and Why. Below, I've included a synopsis. I'll post an excerpt in a separate message.

The reason I'm writing her is I'd like to send Joe a copy of the book. He’s probably never thought of himself as a "killer" angel. Does anybody have an address where I can send the book? If you have information, please email me at dmichaelolive@gmail.com. By the way, you guys and gals should read the book when it comes out in October. Maybe there’s more to Satch than you know.

Synopsis: A leading U.S. bioweapons scientist dies of an unexplainable neurological disease. A mysterious cocaine factory operates out of a Swiss chocolate factory, guarded by highly trained combat troops. Chechnya is destroyed with thermobaric bombs after an outbreak of a bioterrorist virus. And the beautiful but enigmatic CEO of a biotechnology company fights off a take-over attempt by a sinister Boston investment group. Unrelated as these events may seem, Liam Michaels, an artist, photographer—and the immortal Angel of Death—recognizes the insidious moves of fallen angels and he must act quickly to stop the rise of the Fallen.

Here's the excerpt I promised from my novel "Rise of the Fallen." Joe Satriani, aka, Joey Terelli is not someone to mess with.

Setting:Joey has accompanied his brother Liam to a restaurant after his concert. Liam is accompanied by a woman, Dani Suskind, who knows of Liam's nature as an angel. They've just left the restaurant and are heading for their car.

Excerpt: As they reached the corner of Belden and Kenmore, a group of five wannabe men wearing the gang colors of the Insane Deuces came toward them.

“Well, well, what have we here?” Joey asked.

“Hey, hotshot, looks like you brought us dinner and some recreation,” said a young man wearing a red backward-facing baseball cap. He had his hands in his jacket pockets and although surrounded by his gang mates, he looked nervous.

“Oh, I don’t think so, fellas,” Joey said. “I’m afraid you’d get a major case of indigestion. Besides, you look sick.”

“Why the hell you say that, man?” Red Cap said. He stomped his feet, pulled a Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver, and waved it at Joey.

“Now that’s not a toy that someone like you should be playing with, junior. Especially when you’ve got a serious condition like a recto-cranial inversion.”

“What the hell’s that mean?”

“Liam, does she know?”

“Yep.”

“Mind if I do the honors?” Joey asked, a sinister grin on his face.

“By all means.”

“A recto-cranial inversion means your head is up your butt.” Joey didn’t wait for a reaction. Instead, his left hand shot out, grabbed the gun, and pushed it down toward Red Cap’s groin. He sent a spear hand to the gang member’s throat. Joey twisted the gun with both hands, jerking it loose, and tossed it to Liam. He grabbed Red Cap by the front of his shirt and lifted him high over his head with his left hand. He grinned and looked at the other four spellbound men.

“Hey, you guys wanna see a magic trick?” Joey said. “I can make fluster-butt here disappear.” Joey raised his right hand, which began to sparkle like black and gold glitter as he moved his spread fingers toward Red Cap and touched the side of his head. The man’s face began to turn black flecked with gold glitter and distorted like it was being sucked up by a powerful vacuum cleaner. Red cap’s face stretched like a flaccid piece of rubber and disappeared into Joey’s hand. Steadily, his entire head, torso, and legs dissolved and disappeared into Joey’s hand like dust being vacuumed from the floor. Joey’s hand returned to normal, and he licked his fingers. Closing his eyes, he sucked in a deep breath and turned to the other four gang members. “Mmm, finger licking good.” His face broke into a wide grin. “Who’s next?”

The gang members took off down Kenmore. Joey turned to Dani, watching him wide-eyed. Liam smiled and shook his head. “Dani, I’d like you to meet my brother, the archangel Uriel.”

GGG, I don't have any pics of Joe letting me play Chromeboy's whammy bar, but I did find video where you can see Joe getting just the right angle for me to snap a picture of him playing with his teeth. That night was so much fun! What a killer show!

edit: HA! I forgot to post the video link.

Okay, found it picture of Joe playing with his teeth :-)

Here's the whammy picture. Cheese actually printed this pic out and had Joe sign it for me. He wrote "Play my whammy!" LOL!! (luv dat T-Bones!)

I wonder if Joe has ever been to Alaska?
