mikey - check out the 1st movement of The Raft... some nice big sweeps in there.. the transitions are a bit of a handfull so you have to get them down nice and slow first and build up to concert tempo... it took me a little while to nail those licks... but like everything.. time and effort pays dividends...

for your practice try stuff like this:
make up a nice Em pentatonic lick that ends on the E [12th fret 6th string] and Em sweep your way up to top G [15th fret 1st string] which then becomes the first note of the next lick...

also try injecting small sweeps that only traverse 3 or 4 strings into licks...

experiment and enjoy... lol

alexandre - thanx bro.. I'm glad you like it.. Mutha is a fave of mine too.. nice and heavy but with a groove....
Zen - yes my feeling is mainly Heavy Metal.. after all that's my root style.. however I do like to add little ideas in there from other places to create a little difference.. fusion, jazz, funk, classical etc... it's good to mix things up even if [like me] you have a 'core' style into which everything else gets blended..
Yoda - Winchester ain't that far from here... I'll try to drop in...
civgeek - does your wife play any Mozart?

I went to the dentist today. I had to get a filling, and then I had to get another filling replaced. Fun stuff... I didn't want any novocaine. Everyone who was there (staff, people in the waiting room...everyone except the dentist) thought I was crazy...I didn't think it was a big deal, though. Oh well. I was watching Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure while I was there...I love that movie. Anyway...

ScottyZeppelin - Have you seen either Jimmy Page or Robert Plant live?

I saw Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes on 10/19/99...the show was recorded for the Live At The Greek CD. It was awesome.

cuthbert1776 - Me: "Are you saying you don't think he qualifies as an athlete?"
You: That would be absurd.

Okay. You confused me because you quoted "what an athlete really is" instead of "the greatest athlete in the world" in your response to Museman. I understand what you're saying now, though...

IbanezTrent160 - Hehehe...it's a small world. I did know a guy named Vince...I think he went by Vincent, though. I don't remember what the last name was...he was kind of a friend of a friend. It very well could have been your brother.

Yeah, I'll be at the TL / JS / DP show at the Greek Theatre...keep in touch with me either on here or through email (my email address is in my profile), and maybe we can meet up at the gig.

Flagg - I've seen that in a few stores...I don't think I'll ever buy it, though. I know a few T2Jers have it...I think death cube k does. It's gotten mixed reviews.

...Austin...

OCPS I was totally speechless when I tried to speak to him, I could hardly speak. I got to see the show from just 3 feet from the stage, right at his giant pedalboard, so ya know my breath had been taken from the stunning show.
First EJ asked me, if he had met ME before, lol. I got his sig. and dropped my demo to him. He was cool and suave, so relaxed. :)
O yeah, The look inside is a little catch phrase I come up with to get people to, look inside, the music...the sight...and everything else me....haha

alexandrecaetano: Small but fun waves bro, lol, that's all that matters!! :-) Glad your enjoying your summer, and Amen to Carlos Paredes for G3 Up In The Sky!!.... A great tribute it is my friend!! :-) btw, Adrianorb is soo right.... White Dog RULEZ!! :-)

ScottyZeppelin: Glad to hear your friend Rob is overcoming his loss, and so right on SATCH!!.... No one does it better!! :-) btw, you've got quite a collection of guitars there man, and the J-Customs are sweet!!.... Your wife wont notice an extra guitar or 2 would she?? lol!! ;-)

Zenfish: I would love to get a Cueva or Admira, lol, and talk about some MONEY!!
:-0 Beautiful none the less, in tone and looks, thus the high pricetag!!.... We'll wait and see....

Master Yoda: Great to see you getting out of town gigs now bro!!.... Keep rocking!!....

opticalstudio: You are a great friend, and I'm happy to hear you are going to focus all your attention on the guitar!!.... You know you have to follow your passion!!.... I remember you and Randell telling me about Buzzy before, and what a great guy to be able to work with!!.... I'm sure his experience and expertise will go a long way for you guys, and listen to his wisdom.... He has much to offer, and I wish you guys the best of luck!!.... Keep us posted on your progress, and we'll be here to listen.... :-)

Clarky: I checked out the First Movement of The Raft again.... Your right man, I can imagine that took awhile to get down at the right tempo, I love that song, and to me, it seems not f'ing it up is the hardest thing, lol!!.... I agree that time and effort will pay dividends, and I love that little exercise you posted....

I just tried it on my Acoustic.... It sounds kuul, and is a little difficult cause of the high action, but when I get home from work tonite, I will try it on the JEM.... I really like your exercise of incorporating sweeps into other licks, and it is definately great practice!!.... I've seen Paul Gilbert do that alot (inject small sweeps that only traverse 3 or 4 strings into licks) with RacerX, and it really makes for some kuul sounding stuff.... Plus, Paul says that he is not good at sweeping (lol, he's of course mainly a picker), so using little sweeps in the middle of licks helps accent the notes a different way and is easier than picking them depending on where you are on the fretboard....

Great stuff there Paul, that should keep me busy working on my next plateau, lol!!....

craneorodz: Please post a message to or email webmaster@satriani.com, and he (Jon Luini) can forward it on to JOE....

....Later peeps....

JOE,

Have you ever heard of Vinnie Colaiuta? What do you think of him?

Recently, I've been listening to some of his work (Zappa, Megadeth, etc.) and think he's an amazing percussionist. Do you think you might ever do some work with him?

210 posts behind.....

Had another wicked rain storm today that dumped about 4 to 5 inches of rain on us. S'up wit dat??

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes for my parents. They're o.k., but they're still without wheels. Unfortunately, as of this afternoon, the woman still hasn't reported the accident to her insurance company.

GGGuitars, we have the Live frim Austin, TX. DVD too. Great stuff! I like all comedies and comedians. I love to laugh, and I love to see and make other people laugh. The best thing in life is watching my husband and kids have a good belly laugh, and having one myself :)

Mari, the girl was just plain stupid. Of course you would think she would inch out or have one of the guys get out of the car and wave her out. Who the hell rips out into traffic from behind a big parked truck? Stupid does, that's who. lol! As for my daughter - she got the picture blown up into an 8x10 and has it in her room. I think I'm going to try to talk her into keeping it down here on the 1st floor so everyone can see it :) We've been rocking out to the Slave To The Grind cd for a few days too. lol! "I'd rather go nowhere than not know where it's aaaatttttttttttt - Stop readin' me the riot act, while my brains are still in tact, you say it's rainin' but your pissin' down my back, so stop readin' me the riot act!" Ahhh, man I love that shit!!!!! lol!

JBlaze, hey man, I'm so sorry about your dad. Your dad was absolutely right when he said God is everywhere and your soul never dies. We may get lonely, but we're never alone. Amen to that bro! *hugs* Yes, my parents were lucky. My mom was so pissed that she had on her seat belt. She hates belts, but it's a law here now (thank ya Jesus). She was complaining about how it dug into her bypass scar and hurt like hell. I told her that her face in the windshield would have hurt way more. I think she might have changed her mind since she calmed down a bit, and she see's that it was a good thing she had it on. She called me on her cell minutes after the accident, so she was pretty fired up and upset. I'm really glad the airbags didn't go off. Man, they would have done some serious damage. Lucky, unlucky. Depends on how you look at it. I say lucky.

Stace, "....fun people watchin though....had a few laughs...got trashed." Sounds like a good time to me!! lol!

Mari, I might name my new car tsukemono. I like that word :)

Alex, no bugs in my room. I was just talking silly to Mikey to make him laugh a bit. Except for all the rain, things are good here. How are you? Enjoying the beach I hope :)

Adrián, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Slan, enjoy your holiday!

Powerslave, is the Petricci/Rudess cd a good one...or great?

Pete Mulas, hello stranger! Glad you got to see Vai's band. They certainly do kick ass, don't they :)

VFR, that history lesson was disturbing. lol!

Austin, my daughter had a cavity filled yesterday - no novacaine. It cost $95 friggin' dollars! How you folks can take that drill without getting numbed up I'll never know. That HURTS!!

HI JOE!!

Hey everyone in JS land, has anyone been able to download the rehearsal video? I know it is an embedded quicktime file. Hey Joe how come we can't download those videos? Is that a Sony issue? I know that we were able to download a previous video. If it is unable to download them; it would be cool to put them on a cd or dvd as a bonus feature. :)

Flagg, that question comes about every 4-6 months I think. Yeah "Lords Of Karma: A Tribute to Steve vai and Joe Satriani" is a good album. It's a cool thing to have if you have all of Joe and Steve's records. There's some pretty good performances on there, although it's odd hearing such a different take on a tune that you are so used to.

It's worth buying tho....it's interesting.

JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOE!!!!Why not to launch some kind of "Rarities anthology" CD to make such of your things as Slick, Eight steps, Tumble, Dog with crown & earrihg, Turkey man more accesible? The remixed pieces from "Additional creations" are desired, too, but I`m dying to get the 5 I listed above - so that I could boast of a COMPLETE JS audio collection. Indeed, those Japanese releases & bonus CD to EOC are pretty far & hard to get.Don`t think I`m a bustard who got used to make people around do what he needs, but do somthing about this. At least, respond.
