Gotta Have Joe, Try using a metronome and set it at about 40 to 60 bpm. Use the G major scale and do open string starting at the second fret then third fret, fifth, seventh, etc. When you can play that smoothly then just simply increase the bpm say by increments of 10 or so. A drum machine would work also. When you pick just use alternate down up down up. Hit the note and then pick three open E notes before going to the next fret. I learned that exercise from Troy Stetina and it can increase picking speed tremendously. Chromatic exercises also work great for the picking hand. Again, set the metronome slow and build speed when you are smooth. I hope that helps.
ok.......first, whats a metronome? and whats a bpm? Thanks fer your help, if i figure out what those things are...ill defenetly try that :D
gosh....i think its time i now go get lessons...
Sam said i was pretty good fer not been playing very long and not having lessons....so thats cool, but i need to learn a LOT, like, how to read music and what a metronome and bpm is......i can read chords but thats bout it....

Reason 3.0 is pretty easy to use, theres a few tutorials out there on the net to get beginners going and they give you the low down on all the different features and functions and how to use them etc...I highly recommend it. With artists such as Mushroomhead and The Prodigy using it to make their music I don't see how anyone could go wrong with splashing out about £200 on it.
Cool Edit Pro 2, or Adobe Audition as its now know, is equally as awesome. Its a straight to the point multitrack recorder that has a wide array of effects. Very straight forward and easy to use.
I basically improvise on my guitar and come up with a riff, I then record it, import it into reason and find the time signature and tempo that its actually at then I create some empty bars and with a drum kit hi-hat I create a metronome for writing rhythm, leads etc...
After that I make a drum beat using either custom kits I've made myself or the default kits that ship with Reason. Then comes the fun bit of adding all the quirky electronica style noises, synths, keys etc...I find when a song comes together and starts sounding good to me I can't stop its just too much fun, I wish I was a better guitarist so I could get my ideas down better and had more 'tools' to play with.

Cheers dude, I'll have a better mix of it done by the end of the week *fingers crossed* at the moment I feel the volume can be a bit all over the place and some of the rhythm parts are a bit thin, but those are easily fixed :-), thanks for listening.

Yeah, Liverpool...er...I'd rather not cheers...Birmingham's not much better, but Liverpool has more of a reputation as being a shit hole.
Sorry to any scousers on the board, but face facts its not paradise.

gotta have Joe If you want to get your picking faster, try this...it works, and also works for your fretboard fingers when working on speed and accuracy.
Obviously, start off slow and build speed. You don't even need to have a chord or note(s) being fretted, you can just mute the strings with your fretboard hand. I mute the strings. Start simple - one strum every 4 beats, 2, 1... then 8th notes, 16th, and so on. The key, play all (from one strum every 4 beats all the way to 64ths) at the SAME tempo. Raise the tempo gradually. You don't even need a metronome, just tap you foot at a constant rate. I hope I explained it alright, it's a lot easier to show than say. I was actually working on my picking hand today, working on Dream Theater's 'Overture 1928', make sure I can play the rhythm and leads perfectly. Need any help, just let me know.
Matt King I know where Toms River Music is, I live literally 2 minutes away from the place (I live right behind the mall). What type of style is your music? I was going to see your band and a few others earlier this year, Mari told me about the 'Lord of the Strings' but I got sick that weekend out of nowhere for the 1st time in a while. I'll email you later. I'm working on Dream Theater's 'Overture 1928' right now, a friend wants to record the song...the whole song is pretty much guitar, he's got nothing to do for it! And, I gotta record a solo for DT's 'As I Am' for the 2nd time, he screwed something up, so I gotta put another solo in. talk to you later.

Satriella, sorry about delay...just check in from time to time. Well...can see how 'chompy' means 'damn tasty' but for me the whole Chompy thing is a bit of an old-joke-that-stuck-to-the-extent-that-even-my-sis's-kids-call-me-'Uncle Chompy'!!!
What I really wanted to say was that Joe will blow you away if it is your first Satch gig! Am going to meet Joe at last as have purchased a package!! Yahoo! Now, the best thing about this is that I am going to meet him with my fiancee Lily....there's a long story behind this....wanna hear it?? Ok then...I was married to a cow who left me after 10 years of my running around after her every need. 1 day, 11 years ago, I asked her to come to see Satch with me and she ruined the evening by sitting down and saying she was bored,....get this...just as Satch started playing Flying in a Blue Dream!! Now I have met Lily...been with her for 3 years....a truly beautiful person....we get married in August..and she is totally up for meeting Joe..even though she loves R and B!!....what a turn-around...Life is good. Enjoy the show Satriella...you will LOVE it!! Vinnie/Keith/Joe etc www.davincimusic.co.uk

Heya, I just read Guitarmeisters post about picking speed, I agree a metronome is not always necessary but if you ever need a good metronome program on your computer so you can just sit and practice for hours on end (or, like me...until the clicks drive you insane) then try
Type metronome in the search thingy-ma-bob
Thats if you don't already have one lol.

Boo! LOL:-)
I did not choose my name because I am a scary dude--although I can look it on a bad day! LOL. I chose it because Satch Boogie is one of my favorite songs besides Crystal Planet, Ceremony, Lords of Karma, Devil's Slide, Circles, Summer Song and Ice #9. Banana Mango rocks too. Oh yeah I forgot about House Full of Bullets, One Big Rush and Rasberry Jam.
What are people's favorites? I like all of them but these more than others.

Dear All
Anyone in The Lincoln County area of Maine? I am trying to form a pagan hard rock/heavy metal band. I am not hear to preach but to play music with people regardless of their race, nationality, sexuality, politics, spirituality etc. although I would like it if they were open-minded about paganism. I worship mother nature, not the devil. Thanks! Email me at panther@gwi.net or post a message if you are interested.
Is this ok to post ads regarding music?

Must say that this last album is by far one of the best.
Was wondering if you had any plans to eventually come north into Canada? Possibly Edmonton, Alberta would love to see a show.
Hope to see you soon,

kayla a metronome is a little electric device that gives you a fixed tempo so you can practice. normally, we tend to either increase or decrease the speed of our playing and we lose the sense of rhythm. this happens especially when we are learning, it's like jogging, if you get tired, you start to slowing down, but you don't notice. the same thing happens when you play. when you play on a band for example, the drummer sets the pace, and you have to follow it, like a soldier. but when you are alone, you kinda try to do it in your head. some people tap the floor with their shoes to count and mark the tempo, some people just move their heads around, some others count. the metronome is like a little drum machine, very simple, it just gives you beats (1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4...) at a set pace. it never changes, so it lets you understand and follow the pace. the good thing about it is that you can adjust how fast or how slow you want it to go... the "bpm" means 'beats per minute', which means how fast or slow you want it, basically. try to check out john petrucci's rock discipline, he explains it wat better than me and he shows you how to do it and how to practice with it... hope this helps :)
delfino pie nice tracks, i like the techno thing, i wish i had some more money to get the reason 3.0... you have convinced me, it's a very nice product...
growler thanks for the support again, bro... actually, i'm from south america, not central america... not that it makes any difference, but just to avoid confusions (if i don't say it somebody else will)... actually, back in the day, we used to be neighbors with brazil, but not now, we've been at war with peru many times and we've lost a big chunk of our territory (not ours anymore, i guess!)... anyway, i read the whole portuguese-spanish thing and what i can say about it is that, as a native spanish speaker who has taken portuguese classes, both languages derived from latin, just as italian, romanian, etc. so they all sound similar, and a lot of words of these languages are spelled the same way, so it's an honest mistake. if i listen to people speak either of these languages, i can understand almost all of what they say, and they can understand me... that's all... what really matters after all this crap is that gustavo guerra rocks!!! how old is this dude, anyway??? he looks my age...
Anton Shred
thanks for the compliment, man... actually, i don't have a camcorder now so i can't tape myself playing... i'd take pictures of my guitars but my digital camera broke and i'm saving to get a new one!!! what i can tell about this guitar in particular is that, it was made back in my country, that is ecuador, south america... there's this american guy called bob vogel who's been living in my country for a long time, he started his own business and now he has a guitar factory over there... when you go to his shop, you can see pictures of him attending the namm events and hanging out with JOE, or STEVE and all these amazing players. so he uses american recipes and south american woods to build them... i bought this guitar over the phone, because i'm left handed, and i don't get to pick guitars, that's not an option for a lefty, especially in south america... but this guy said he'd do it at no extra charge so i bought it... when i first tried it, i knew it sounded like a more expensive guitar (i paid almost 600 bucks for it!!!) i was really pleased, and i still am... what else?? oh, the back and the sides are like an ovation guitar, you know, not the classic wood but fibreglass shell and stuff... but that's it... i don't know if this guy brings his guitars here to show them on namm, but just so you know, they're just called 'vogel' guitars you can log on their website, i know they have an english version here it is

Anton Shred i ran out of space on my last post... another thing, my guitar model is called AP4, but you should check the whole website, i know i'm definitely going back to buy a nylor string guitar from this guy...
if you are interested about my gear, i don't really have much cuz' i just moved to this beautiful country and i just started working... so far i just bought an electric guitar, an ibanez RG370DX, cuz it was the only reasonably priced guitar available for lefties with a floyd trem... i also bought a practice amp, a fender G-DEC and that's it... my dad came to visit a month ago and brought me my vogel... i had a standard strat back there, but it got stolen, and i still have another guitar back in ecuador, a spanish guitar that my dad bought when he was my age, really sweet... spanish style, man, nylon strings...
i'll try to record some more latin oriented instrumentals in the near future, i'll keep you guys informed...

ovation ,,,,thanks bro and i am looking forward to that mail of yurs with the message for stevie. as for the faith issue, well you can say that i trust God more than anything and anybody else ,my faith in him is justified coz numerous times i have been saved from XYZ coz of my faith in him..i always believe that behind everything that happens God has a purpose and thus despite the sadness and sorrow of losing someone we should try to find out why God has taken that person away from us ...HE ALWAYS HAS A PLAN and his way of moving us is unbelievable and sometimes he does things to really hurt us to test our faith in him and those are the moments when we show the world that God is wise and just and he always does what is best for us...it may take time to sink in but in the end when yu really ponder yu realise that god made a wise move on us... ......god bless and cheers..have a nice day
all the other guys ,,,have a wonderful day.....
and just one thing.....can anyone tell me anything about the silver jubilee concert of dream theater on april....austin(Dothestu) had mailed me about it coz he was there but it was a very short description..i heard DT are bringing out an album/DVD of that show ,,,is it true????
cheers.
