Hey Joe...I'm a mom and feel a little out of place in your site! I've read through some of the postings and can easily see that there are a lot of young adults and kids who look up to you. My son is a HUGE fan of yours. Whether you wanted to be or not, you're an obvious role model to our youth. What do say to those who want to drop out from school to pursue a career in music? I don't want to squash my son's passion for the guitar, but I want him to understand that not everyone "makes it". He's a great kid and I care about him. What would you say to these kids? I'd love a little advise... bsmith61@comcast.net

And Robert Fripp mistery continues

Since most people ignored my last couple of posts, Im here to tell Im still after the truth.

Who is Robert Fripp? Where was him in Brazil G3 concert? Why he didn't apear? Was his art too much for me to undertand or there wasen't art there at all? Did they forgot to open his sounds, or was his sound that spacial synthetizer stuff? If he was there and that was his sounds, why did you ever called someone like him for g3?

This and much more, in the novel: "Fripp tie at the Brazilian Hall"

Ps: People someone help me with this, I want someone to help me understand what happened there. Isn't there any Robert Fripp fan that might know if he actually played in Brazil? Or maybe someone of the G3 staff could say something... please im as curious as hell to find out what happened there =)

Duff - I don't know about that show but Fripp often sits fairly back on the stage, out of light whilst playing his music, which is probably what happened with your case. That spacial stuff was him doing soundscapes which is what he plays for G3.

Mr Nick - You sure you didn't mess up the punchline... it's supposed to be "you see that tower over there?" "yeah" "well i didn't"...

Travis, the TS9 is a no brainer. It's been a great choice for me. The Distortion plus will give you a lttle more bite than the TS9. With all of the pedals you might want to consider a good noise gate pedal as well. That will cutt out any hissing. The Schecter is one I almost went with. Nice guitar for the money. Good Luck!

Hi all, back from a week and a bit with no Internet. I'm fairly well, my feet are still recovering from an infection and the hay fever symptoms are keeping me entertained.

I have my drum kit at home again for a few days. It's set up in the lounge room heh heh. I thought I'd take the opportunity since I'm on holiday and there was no one in unit 4. Imagine my disgust when this morning some lady moved in next door. Well if she doesn't like high volume metal in the evenings and bash bash bash on the drum kit during the day time too bad.

Gigs are coming every weekend. Note that there is practically no band music scene here. We didn't play on Sunday afternoon though, as our front man was unwell and told the others not to turn up. So I hit the stage by myself and played a couple of our songs just with the drums. No way I was doing a "no-show". I refuse. Was received a lot better than I had expected. This weekend we're playing thrice.

Bahduh: ODI results are always unpredictable, since so many little factors can affect how the game pans out. Funny how the 1st and 2nd ODIs were so similar, Australia batting first and getting a great start, collapsing in the middle and posting a half decent total, then New Zealand battle through towards the end with the tail-enders turning it back into a contest. Only difference between the two was the final result. Friday's game is going to be interesting!

So how is everyone else? Sorry to be a stranger!

Later all, BEN

Opticalstudio, yeah man, EQ and compression is some crazy sh*t! hehe, the science of sound! It takes so long to get a decent understanding of, but it's kind of exciting too, as well as challenging. Guitars tend to be a little tricky to EQ anyway, cause they belt out a massive range of frequencies. Not just the notes and their pitch, but there's harmonics, there's the high-pitch scratch/hiss noises, and also the sub-bass level 'thunk' that you get from pick attack and other such things.

It's satisfying though, when you work it out and get it right, and it's amazing how much can be accomplished by panning, and expanding stereo images. You take it easy too bro!

Yoda, hey thanks a lot for checkin out those tunes! haha, I would have put it the other way round - the Airhead solo drags and The Eye Of Ra is repetitive! but that's just me. I appreciate your comments, it all helps. I don't think the playing is that good, but thanks!

I know it's kind of a tricky question, but can you say why Airhead is Repetitive and so on? it really helps if people can explain the things they do and don't like about my stuff (and why), cause it helps me work on areas that I might not think to work on! Cheers again dude!

Suzie, (Dr Suzie) yeah my cold is starting to get the idea I think! Thanks! hehe, i've been working the orange juice, double-dosing the vitamins and keeping up the sudafed. I hope it'llbe gone by the weekend, but i'm not gonna say it will be cause that'll jinx it! hehe
Ethn, WTF? Dimebag got shot? That is f*cked up. I just read that nbc news story. Man that is all kinds of wrong...

slansh - the David Cross set will be something along the lines of 1 1/2 hours of counting me ass off in 7/8, 11/8, 17/8, 7/4... ... in the key of M

jazzy - take the money.. then buy the sex... lmao..
cuthbert - it's been interesting to see the CNN coverage of the war [albeit the European wing of CNN] in contrast to the BBC coverage [which has been very anti-war] which contrasts again with Sky News and ITV News [both of which appear to be a little more 'even handed' and just state what's going on without really adding thier own twist]...

funny.. I used to watch CNN a lot... and since the war... thier coverage has really turned me off of the channel... there is obvious bias in favour of the UK and US military [which is understandable of course - and that don't really worry me.. I can see through all that crap..].. what really blew me away was the poor standard of reporting....
a while ago there was a French eye witness to some event in Iraq.. as he was speaking CNN was providing a 'voice-over' in English.... and even with my crap French skills I spotted that the translation was a little off the mark... then a brief overview of the interview showed up on the scrolling banner at the bottom of the screen which was further from what the French guy said again... and then later on, a news reader was obviously reading out the same crap from the scrolling banner, reading it wrong, and interleaving it with utter crap that he was clearly inventing on the spot....

I was totally amazed that dispite the swarthy confidense of the confident and quick speaking news reader, he was in fact remarkably stupid and had a real knack for completely missing the key points of the story and 'filling in' the gaps with utter shite....

so these days, if I want reliable and well informed commentry on current affairs across the globe, I watch Sponge Bob...

Zinc - good call bro... I'm a big fan of George Lynch...

962 - when choosing pickups for Avarice the big question for me was "hot or not".... Avarice by her sheer styling is not really intended for EuroPop.. lol... so I wanted her to scream.. but I also wanted a fat tone too.... all 7 string pickups have more grunt than their little brothers anyway.. just because they're bigger.. so I went for the PAF7 neck and bridge.... it has a sort of nasal honk to it.. but with warm-ish lead tones.. I wasn't sure at first.. but the tone is growing on me.... Envy has an Evo7 at the bridge... she really barks at you.. totally different.. when I recoder the rhythm guitar part alway record one on Avaravice and then the same part again through the same patch in the 2120 with Envy.. Avarice provides the body of the overall tone and Envy makes it cut through and provides a more aggressive edge... personally I like this combination....

I just checked the DiMarzio catallogue... no Fred7... just Air Norton7, PAF7, Evo7, Tone Zone 7 and Blaze...
Evny has a Blaze at the neck... the only difference between the Blaze and the PAF7 is that the Blaze [neck] has a touch more bass... but it's hardly noticable... they sound really similar...

optical - a little thing for you to note... getting this stuff working can be quite frustrating... I spents hours and hours trying to sort this..... and because the synchronisation is done through MIDI, and MIDI is not particularly fast [as data transfer methods go].. you may get a little 'jitter' from time to time... this is where the tape and sequencer are rnuning together and the sequencer very quickly does a 'stop then a start'... this is due to congestion in the MIDI link... it's a pain in the rear..... however... when you're mixing down quite often this jitter doesn't really effect anything because it's not as if the faders are being controlled continuously through the song... obviously if a jitter occurs during your fade-out it'll screw it up.. but it's easy.. you just take the song back to the start and hit record/play... and sit back and watch...

but even dispite this little hang up... it's still worth it...

Yoda - you'll have to take it easy when you're knocking out out.. or you'll agravate the injury... lmao....

best of luck in the exam bro...

steeveT - yes I'm getting closer.... I don't have a date yet though.. I still have to complete the Baptist.. record the Rape, fix a few things on the Raft and Virtus and then master it....

this seems to be taking forever.... 18 months to right and demo... and over a year to record...

the next album will be much easier because there will be no demo phase.... I'll write and record as I go...

Duff - Fripp stuff... Fripp is the guitarist for King Crimson.. and a very good one too... from what I gather, Fripp is one of Satch's heros from when Satch was a lil' up coming player..

the 'synth' stuff was actually guitars... Fripp calls these "soundscapes" and uses a collection of effects [mostly Eventide I think] that he calls Frippertronics to create these synth like tones....

the reason that you couldn't see him is because he plays seated... always has... and he always sits towards the rear of the stage.. which means that one side of the audience won't see him because he's obscured by the PA speaker stacks on one side...

I've met and worked with Fripp [we appeared on a David Cross album together.. he's a very remarkable guy and a monster of a guitarist....

and given the stereo-type attitude for G3 events, maybe not the wisest choice of player... although, when I saw him at G3 I enjoyed him playing greatly..
