Google launches literacy project

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Google Inc. (Nasdaq:GOOG - news) unveiled on Wednesday a Web site dedicated to literacy, pulling together its books, video, mapping and blogging services to help teachers and educational organizations share reading resources.

The site was launched at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the world's largest gathering of publishing executives, in conjunction with the United Nations and a literacy campaign organized by fair officials.

While the service seeks to combine a rich set of resources to combat global illiteracy, it also helps bolster the educational credentials at a company with a market value of around $120 billion.

"Google's business was born out of a desire to help people find information," said Nikesh Arora, vice president of Google's European operations.

"We hope this site will serve as a bridge to even greater communication and access to important information about literacy problems -- and solutions," he added.

More than 1 billion people around the world over the age of 15 are considered illiterate, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO).

The project, at google.com/literacy and google.de/literacy, also serves as a fresh way for Google to expand and differentiate its fledgling video service, which is playing catch-up against popular sites such as YouTube.

Google has asked literacy groups around the world to upload video segments explaining and demonstrating their successful teaching programs. Among the first few hundred to be posted is a same-language subtitle project from India that uses Bollywood films to teach reading.

A nonprofit group in New York called 826NYC is helping a group of six-to-nine-year-olds make a video tutorial for Google, while a set of older kids is filming a claymation short.

"When our students see the Web as something they can contribute to -- rather than just browse through -- they're inspired to think bigger, write more and film more," said Joan Kim, the group's director of education.

The service also uses Google's mapping technology to help literacy organizations find each other, and provides links to reading resources.

Google embarked two years ago on a massive project to digitally scan all of the world's books, a plan that has been embraced by some publishers and pilloried by others who consider it copyright violation. A group of them have filed a lawsuit against Google in the United States.

Good Morning Satchland.......How Are We Today?

Cuth..... I applaud you. I'm with you and every word you said. I see it all the time and it disgusts me terribly. Suzo and my Cindy are the rare breed. They both have an uphill battle not only with the kids (as stated earlier) but more with the administration. These ladies can deal with the kids cuz they love to teach and find ways to get through to them. But the Unions and administration, thats another story.....a battle they can't even talk about let alone do something about cuz' they'll be gone in a blink of an eye and then Blackballed. It's very sad. When education became big buisness the kids were done. The bad teachers today have forgotten about the key they hold in there hands. They use this key for themselves and have forgotten about the kids. Sorry my blood is boiling. When adults f..k with kids and use kids for their advantage I take offence and get really pissed off. The machine is to big and it's out of hand and I really don't think we can do anything about it......

Don't you think they know that?

Have A Great Day Everyone ! ! ! !

I'm going to punch something now....lol..... Sorry for the rant.

Hi guys!! Hope yer all doing good !! Just popped in to spread the joy and whatnot... with all the crazy crap thats been goin on all over the place we -and by WE i mean all here at T2J -are all intitled to our opinions -reguardless of topic- and they should not be focus of arguement (squabblin amongst ourselves is beneth T2Jers) so that we may all feel free to voice ourselves as this is the medium after all is it not... but, arguement is good as again we are all intitled to opinion and somtimes they conflict - again this is the forum- but lets make sure we dont take personal offence when none was meant...observations and all that jazz. Soooo let Joe and his 'Way' pull ya through...Dont make me post some more crappy Jokes!!! Peace love and happiness to all !! MT

cuthbert1776

You have email . . .

Also - I watched the ABC program (most of it) - teachers also complain (in some areas) of being under paid, but they get paid very well (in some areas). I have a friend who was offered a teaching position in Alaska ($49K to start, $2K moving expenses, $5K signing bonus, with review in 1 year - of a 3 year contract - max to be $55K). Not bad for coming right out of school.

School can be a dangerous place - may be safer for children to be at home? Definately do not send them to DC to be a Page.

Dr.Mindcrime...hey...I'm ok....in my humble opinion...your best bang for your buck would be a JS1200....great guitar, great price... no finish issues...JS2PRM + JS10th....both outrageous axes, but sensitive finishes.... love em anyway!

If you're bent on a chromed axe...find a good chrome plater, and take your JS to him...if you're convinced he can "git er dun" right!

Ask lotsa questions of your Luthier & Plater if you're considering it!

Best of luck

I actually have both a js1200 and js1000. Im looking to get a chrome js as its been my dream guitar since forever. How much do you play your js2? Im really scared that the finish is just going to flake off under normal use..

Just got the news I didnt want to ever hear. been tallking with my local doctor about my mum er mom to you guys. As you all know my father and I have been looking after her for the last five years , man seems like a long time, as she has dimentia and alzimers etc, any way the last year or so its been getting worse n worse, my mum (81 this year) is getting very hard to handle, its a 24/7 job looking after her, I live five minutes away from them, around the corner.

the family in sydney (australia) are 3 hrs away and come down on the weekends when they can ,still alot of effort on every ones part trying to care for my mum the best we can, and have avoided putting her in a home of some kind, but the doc today told us it may be our only way, only option of caring for her properly, dads 83 this year, and recently had a boating accident with my eldest brother, which the boat overturned on them in a freak wave..

any way i think he's realized now that its getting too tough, too much ..as sad and dissapointing as it is, I fear its something we may have to do before the end of the year, dont know ,its all upto dad, things are not good.. I wish I could play more, wish I could do more for them, but Im doing all I can , I quit the church music team cause of there attitude towards me looking after my mum, saying that if i couldnt be at every practice ,every session etc then theyd get some one else, so I told them to go jump..

I play when I can, but its not much.. So If I dont make the show in december Joe, please forgive me...

We're still not sure when or if it will happen with mum and taking her to a home, but its going to happen eventually..

man I got the blues
