MichaelAngeloBatio - Playing guitar isn't about "beating" someone else in a duel.

ScottyZeppelin - Cool... I would've loved to see JPJ on his Zooma tour, but I moved right around the time he was playing here in CA...I had other stuff to do, so I couldn't make the show happen. I have a bootleg or two from that tour, though.
injector - You can get Slick and The Eight Steps on The Electric Joe Satriani: An Anthology. You can hear Tumble and Dog With Crown And Earring on the album listening party. You can get the other songs on Additional Creations, which you should be able to find on Ebay.
prophetFxB - You can buy one of the ticket packages for that show, or you can wait by Joe's bus after the gig and try to get an autograph and a picture that way.

It's good....say a B or B+. I'd recommend the Liquid Tension Expermient stuff first.

OCPS470 (and others who pointed me in the right direction), thanks for advising Eurotubes.com. Bob rocks, and so does my amp now! Got the 5 new JJ preamp tubes today, and just installed them. It sounds great, and they're all glowing! Sweet!

Thanks for the help :-)

this might be off topic from the current conversation, but I'd like to know how to get that wicked sound in the beginning of "flying in a blue dream" and in "rocking in the free world." thanks

Mikey - as usual.. most players when practicing grab exercises out of books, mags and from pals... most of this stuff is very specific.. i.e. they concentrate upon specific techniques.. alternate picking, legato, sweeping, tapping, harmonics, bending, vibrato, etc.. etc..

ok.. that's all well and good 'cos you've got to know how to do this stuff.... but think again...

how often would you play a solo using a single technique and no other?? amlost never....

now when I see the newbies playing I see the same issues over and over with their playing:
timing - they seem to work so much on lead playing that the concept of sitting tight with the rhythm section is not there.. loose rhythm playing spawns looser lead playing
vibrato / bending - if you spend all your time working on how fast you can play Em then that's all you know how to to.. precise bending and nice thick and even vibrato is the difference between sounding novice and pro... and is a tool of considerable need for lead playing.. so it needs tending to..
transition - getting from one technique to any.. and being seemless about it.. with the newbies you can hear a noticable pause as they struggle to change hand posture to get to the get technique... solution?.. practice the transition [start playing 2 bars before the transition, make the change, and play 2 bars after.. over and over.. nice and slow.. and grow it into the desired tempo..
sheer speed - well this is pretty obvious.. some stuff is just way too quick for the newbies to tackle.. but they'll try it none the less.. and sound really bad.. and bitch about it.. solution?.. play something easier and play it well... get used to sounding great.. and raise the level of difficulty over time...

always try to sound as good as you can...

and thanks for the post on my IUMA... nice one bro

Zen - "Nothing is hardest than to show the simplicity" VAN GOGH.

so try playing Crying with the same resolution and clarity as Satch... and that phrase becomes very real.. right in your hands. even more so for the advanced player that can really appreciate that level of detail....

the technique thing is all about fluidity [exactly the stuff I've been talking to Mikey about] and fluency [which comes with time]

when you want to say something - speak
when you have emotions - express

cuthbert - I have a fear of dentists too... like when that say "open your mouth... now you'll only feel a little prick.."

scares the shit out of me.. and I'm not a little fella...

Stace - wise choice on the G3 vote.. your bribe is in the post... lol....

looks like I have a fan.. kewel...

962: Great to hear man! You're probably experiencing the same thing I did when I put in the JJ's. I was surprised that the amp sounded totally different, and more expensive with the JJ's .....puts Groove Tubes to shame the way they claim to be great.

OCPS470, haha, man that's so true. These JJ tubes are divine. My GIO is my only playable guitar at the mo, and in it's current state it's nothing special - it has it's standard Ibanez neck pickup installed. Even so, I rolled the tone off, switched on the 'Lead' channel, and it was smooth as a baby's ass!

It sounds so much better, and I now realise, with the fully-working reverb, that the amp's valves have been half-buggered ever since I got it. Unfortunately, i'm about 2 or 3 months over the 12 month warranty, so the dealer isn't going to be particularly bothered about it.

Nevermind, the Legacy sounds massively better, and that's all that matters. Oh, it also sounds massively LOUD :-p

I got the Van Halen double CD the other day - was onsale at Best Buy for 13.99 or 14.99.

I like the 3 new songs and I like, how for the most part, how each song trades off - one from Van Hagar, the next from Van Roth, ect ect.

I also pulled out Van Halen III - with their temporary singer - if you listen a few times, it isn't toooo bad, not great, but not awful. There are some good guitar riffs on that disc.

Pete Mulas - Thanks for posting some new tunes man, I was really diggin' them. You've gotten insanely good, songwriting and technique wise... did that solo cd you were trying to record ever materialize, or got put on hold? Have a good one... oh, and by the way... glad the Vai concert was blast.

To People Wanting to Hear a Cool Tune - anyone ever heard of the Jimmy Swift Band? They're a pretty funky/electronica/jazzy/jammy type band, lol... anyway check out their site here and go to music and try listening to the "80s Runway Model". I'm all about this tune right now, lol. Its pretty awesome.

Clarky: Right-On man, I agree, when learning guitar you can be focused so much on a particular technique that it (the particular technique) is all you have.... Nothing to back it up, nothing to transition to and no chordal structure to save your life.... To me, that is what seperates the men from the boys, and IMHO, no one does it better than Eric Johnson!!.... He's got it all, fingerstyle acoustic, beautiful chordal voicings and changes (most shredders cant handle them, lol) and he can go all out with the best of them when he wants to.... That's my perception of the all-around player....

Your advice on timing, vibrato and transition (this one in particular is probably the hardest for most) are spot on man, I couldnt explain it any better!!....

You really do need to put out Clarky's Rules Of The Fretboard after Shredz is completed, cause I know it will be a bestseller, seriously bro!!....

TASTEY: haha, lol, my vote for alexandre was for him hooking me up, lol, when I try to thank someone for something or see something unusual posted, I do the .... for G3 line, lol!! ;-)

....That said....

Jimmy Dunlop 2.0mm Stubby's for G3!! (They are guitar picks Tastey, lol)

....Later peeps....
