Now that the asteroid has safely passed us by I feel it's time to break my cyberspace-silence and let you all know what I've been up to these last few months.

After returning home from the last of three incredible G3 tours (see soon to be posted "ZZ's fly-on-the-wall/tour movies"), I got down to writing music for a new solo record. A very prolific and cathartic two months followed resulting in a bundle of new music I was very excited to get recorded.

With 16 of the songs selected for the project, all heading in different directions and touching on a variety of musical influences, I realized I needed to assemble a new studio band. The idea was to crank up the energy level of the sessions, and allow for more individual expression of the material, from each player.

I pulled into Skywalker Sound with Mike Keneally on keyboards, Chris Chaney on bass and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. The chemistry between these awesome players was fantastic, and we blazed through all the tracks with everyone laying down amazing performances.

On Valentine's Day I finally finished all the overdubs, reviewed the tracks with engineer/producer Mike Fraser and started loading out of the studio, elated!

Now it's on to Vancouver, BC, to mix. The new record will be called "Unstoppable Momentum" and should see a release date of May 7th. I'm not sure how many songs will make it to the final sequence as I still have a lot of work ahead of me in that department.

As you can see from the tour page we are gearing up to bring the new music on tour starting in mid-May and continuing through 2013. My touring band will consist of Mike Keneally on keys and guitar, Bryan Beller on bass, and Marco Minnemann on drums. I'm so excited about tearing it up on stage with this new band! Legendary guitarists JOE SATRIANI and STEVE VAI have laid plans for a second benefit concert in support of music industry veteran and good friend, Cliff Cultreri. "A Benefit for Cliff II" will take place on Sunday, July 10th at the House of Blues, Hollywood, and will feature performances by both Satriani and Vai, as well as special guests and friends of the duo, including Dweezil Zappa, Orianthi, Brendan Small and Tony MacAlpine, among others.

It was also announced over the holiday weekend that a live webcast is now confirmed for this amazing concert! All of us are still in a state of shock and sadness over Carter's passing. Carter, you will be missed.

Carter, the legendary A&R man, producer, songwriter, manager, and lifelong fighter for songs with proper bridges (and, where possible, proper nouns) died on May 10 in Palm Springs. He was 65.

Born John S. Carter in East St. Louis, Illinois, he grew up moving around the West and Midwest, the only child of an oilman and an indefatigable Arthur Godfrey fan.

Carter’s career began in 1967, when he wrote the lyrics to “Incense And Peppermints” by the Strawberry Alarm Clock – a group he renamed by picking words from song titles on the week’s Hot 100 chart. He subsequently became a radio promotion executive for Atlantic Records in San Francisco, where he hired his favorite winos from the Mission District to hand-deliver the Rolling Stones’ Exiles On Main Street to local radio programmers.

Recruited to the A&R department of Capitol Records because of his reputation for spotting hits, Carter worked with Bob Seger and Steve Miller during the periods of their commercial breakthroughs; he also signed – and co-wrote and produced – landmark albums for Sammy Hagar, Bob Welch, and The Motels.

His outstanding creative gifts were taste, language, and wit; above all he was a maker of memes, known on the street as hooks. He collaborated fully with artists, but only contributed to a composition when he sensed a failure to surrender its essence. Fixing a chorus, refurbishing a lyric, adding the telling detail (not infrequently a proper noun) or coming up with an album title or visual image that triangulated with sound and singer to create the ineradicable tattoo of a hit: that was Carter’s calling.

He was, as reported earlier, a stickler for bridges (typically, the new melodic and lyrical information that comes after verse and chorus have repeated a few times). Formal purity was not what drove him, rather the desire to hear every song matter. Unless it was on the level of a “Louie Louie,” Carter believed, any song that wasn’t flush enough to demand a bridge probably didn’t deserve to handle the dice.

In 1983 he overcame powerful corporate opposition to sign an apparent has-been, Tina Turner. He A&R’d her first Capitol album, Private Dancer, and produced several of its tracks, including the title song. The album launched Turner’s years as a global superstar, selling more than 20 million copies.

Carter went on to work at A&M, Atlantic, Chrysalis and Island Records. Yet despite his track record, he often struggled to find colleagues who believed in the artists he loved. When faced with skepticism, Carter leaned on the Ouija and made transformative decisions for fragile careers. He nurtured the songwriting of Tonio K; fought inside battles for David & David and Tori Amos; got Melissa Etheridge a publishing deal with A&M’s affiliate when the label refused to let him sign her.

Carter discovered that he was better able to fight for the talents he revered by working independently as an artist manager. His discoveries include Mark Everett, who records as the Eels, and Paula Cole.

Throughout a life in music that spanned more than forty years, one of Carter’s achievements stands out for its rarity: he has retained the love and respect of nearly everyone he ever worked with, both on the commercial and creative sides of the business. Take as evidence his professional reunion with Sammy Hagar: after decades of unbroken friendship, more than thirty years after they made “Red” together, Hagar invited Carter to manage him. They created the group Chickenfoot, which continues to thrive, along with Hagar’s solo career.

Carter is survived by his wife Christy Carter and his daughter Crosby Carter.

"This collection represents a twenty-five year journey composing, playing and recording rock guitar instrumental music, with a vocal or two thrown in for good measure. Selecting the tracks was at first a daunting task, with over one hundred and seventy songs to choose from, you can imagine the difficulty. During the selection process I started to feel that artists shouldn't be the ones to pore over their work like this. It's better to be looking forward, always searching for what lies ahead. Then I asked myself, "Is this a 'Greatest Hits' or an 'Anthology' collection?" There is a difference. However, in this case, it turns out to be both after all, a collection of songs for the hardcore fan, as well as the casual listener. I know this because we turned to the very people who know my music best to compile it, the online fans at satriani.com. With thousands of replies from our questionnaire regarding the "Anthology" collection, we compiled a master track list from which we could extract an awesome collections of songs, and exercise a little editorial control as well. Last week I spent the day at Oakland Stadium with Brad Pitt and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. They're filming a movie called "Moneyball" about the Oakland A's. I was asked me to re-create my 2002 season opener National Anthem for the film. It looks to be a very cool movie focusing on the A's executive Billy Beane. I dressed in 2002 gear, and even used my older equipment. All in the name of authenticity.

All buzzing with excitement here as we get ready to start recording a new Batch of Satch! We used to call them records, then albums, then CD's, but now??? So, Batch of Satch it is, but it will have a proper "album" title, I promise.

All the songs are written, and mostly arranged, just waiting to come alive. Jeff, Allen and Mike will be arriving in a few days for a bit of rehearsal, then it's off to the studio. I can't wait to hear all this new music played loud in a big room!

"My Kinda Girl" hits the airwaves, the "Get Your Buzz On" DVD is released, and we just had a Chickenfoot weekend in Cabo! I thought we were taking a break! Oh, and I almost forgot, we've already started making demos for Chickenfoot 2. Cabo was fun, as the fans made it a great weekend for the Foot. The webcast was a phenomenal success, thank you Jon Luini and company, and our sponsor BestBuy Big thanks to drummer extraordinare Matt Sorum for jamming with us on Thursday's gig and to my fellow Gentlemen of the Foot, Sammy, Mike and Chad, you guys rock the hardest!

I'm heading to the studio in one month to start recording a new solo project with Jeff Campitelli (drums), Allen Whitman (bass) and Mike Keneally (keyboards). The new material is dying to be recorded, and I can't wait to get started. I don't have a title for the project yet, but I will let you know when I figure it out...

1) Joe enters the studio this summer for a new album scheduled for an October 2010 release. It's sure to be a powerful set of music, coming off of the last year or so working on Chickenfoot, plus the amazing Experience Hendrix tour.

2) The tour is starting in Europe in October and November, and then coming to the US and Canada in December and January.
